Re: [Elecraft] MH2 Microphone Discontinued

2005-05-27 Thread Mike Warner

Hello All,
After leaving the Elecraft booth at Dayton with my K2/100/SSB/ATU
(SN-004935), DL-1, BL-1 in hand with the understanding that the Heil
hand mic was discontinued, I stopped at the Heil booth and asked them
what might work. There I was told that a mic with the Icom element and a
Kenwood connector will work. Also they confirmed that the MH2 was no
longer available.

I ended up purchasing a Traveler boomset for Kenwood because I was
informed that all of the Travelers have Icom elements and only the
connectors are different. I realize that this doesn't directly address
the hand mic issue but perhaps it could help with some homebrewing.

PS, As soon I clear a workable area on my bench, construction of the K2
will begin.

[Elecraft] KX1 #1116 lives!

2005-05-27 Thread dmaliniak
I read the list avidly but post very rarely. I had to post, though, to
announce the birth of KX1 #1116. The basic rig is completed and in fine
working condition. All options are on the bench and waiting for solder.

I haven't had the opportunity to make a maiden contact yet but I'm seeing
a little more than 3 W at 14.100 MHz and a little more than 4 W at 7.100
MHz on a dummy load running from 13.8 V.

The only thing I notice is that receive sensitivity seems a little lower
on 20 meters than on 40, although that could have more to do with the
antenna I was using than the rig. It was a full-wave 40-meter loop plugged
straight into the rig, i.e. no ATU.

Once again, I thank everyone at Elecraft for a fine product and an
enjoyable building experience!

RE: [Elecraft] on air SSB filter alignment

2005-05-27 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Howard,

You said the receive audio curves 'look great' - but are they at the proper
frequencies?

What is the audio frequency shown in Spectrogram at the -3dB points of the
USB passband? In my experience, the low end should be somewhere near 300
Hz. Also be certain that this is the passband for the FL1 filter - that is
the only BFO setting used for transmit - you can set FL2 thru FL4 anywhere
you want for receiving. Also be certain FL1 is set to OP1 and not the
variable filter.

If you have the 2.3 kHz filter bandwidth, set markers (pointers) in
Spectrogram at 300 and 2600 Hz and center the passband between those
markers. (300 and 2300 markers for the older 2.0 kHz filter).

Could it be that you are 'netting' the K2 to a certain frequency rather than
listening to the other signal and tuning for the best audio? - if you are
relying on a particular net frequency shown on the K2 dial, it could simply
be that your dial calibration is off. See my website www.qsl.net/w3fpr or
the mirror at http://home.earthlink.net/~w3fpr for detail information on
setting the K2 dial calibration.

To adjust 'on the air', you should use a second receiver, being careful not
to overload it, and feed the K2 into a dummy load. If you can record the
output of the receiver you can better evaluate the voice response.
Determine whether the audio is too high or too low and then use the receive
Spectrogram display to shift the passband a bit up or down as required and
repeat the testing process - continue until satisfied.

Don W3FPR

I was told by a friend that the K2 prefers a 600 ohm mic and that
a electrec mic element wouldn't sound right. I've got both - an old
Cobra (label removed) CB 600 ohm dynamic and a boom headset
salvaged from a cell phone (2.2k).

I'm not able to test either right now as my K2 has no SSB audio
output. PTT VOX work but no audio. :-(

I emailed Elecraft support and am waiting on ideas where to look
for the trouble. I'll get it working and get reports on both mics.

I'll let ya know.

Re: RE: [Elecraft] Heil handmike discontinued.

2005-05-27 Thread vze3v8dt
For HF I don't use a hand mic anymore. Instead I use the Heil BM-5 headset.
Solves a few problems. I don't like to use an external speaker for HF mobile
as there is so much road noise and band noise it is difficult to copy weak
signals. The headset is definitely the way to go to improve the local signal
to noise ratio. Also reduces noise for passengers who may not have an
interest in listening to the HF noise either. This situation is completely
different than a VHF/UHF rig used on FM which doesn't have the same local s/n
issues. Only problem I still have is that I need a PTT switch or use VOX. I
don't like to use VOX because if I have passengers in the vehicle or
accidentally use an explative due to some other bad driver nearby I don't want
to transmit. For PTT I put a momentary pushbutton in a pill bottle. Would be
cool to mount it to the gear shifter directly, but I just hold onto the pill
bottle.

Also found headsets a great asset for contesting as well. I doubt I'll ever
use hand mics again on HF!

---

Are you looking at FL1 on Spectrogram? FL1 is the ONLY filter/BFO setting
combination used on transmit, regardless of which filter you have selected
for receive.

Still, as the Elecraft SSB module manual says, the final adjustment of your
BFO setting often must be done by listening to your signal. Spectrogram gets
you in the ball park, but it's not always close enough.

The stock K2 SSB filter is intentionally a very narrow filter. It's just
about 2 kHz wide. That's wide enough for excellent intelligibility while
being as narrow as possible for the greatest punch. The narrower the
bandwidth, the greater the signal-to-noise ratio. But the narrow bandwidth
requires very careful adjustment of the BFO frequency, and it should be
checked with the mic you are using and, preferably, with your voice.

Tinny suggests that the bandpass is too far from the suppressed carrier,
cutting off too many lows.

One excellent way to check your signal is to transmit into a dummy load
while monitoring your signal on an auxiliary receiver. You'll want to record
your voice since it's impossible to hear what you really sound like on the
air while talking. There's too much bone conduction in your head that fills
in spectrum that many not be coming through the rig for your to be able to
tell accurately what other operators hear.

If you don't have a suitable receiver, perhaps a buddy will do some checks
for you on the air. In that case you can plug in your test probe into the
BFO Test point, get on the air and hook up with your buddy, then try making
small adjustments in the BFO frequency for FL1 while he listens to the
difference. You'll have to switch to CAL FIL, chose the filter, make a small
adjustment in the BFO frequency, then switch out to make the new BFO value
get read into memory. Keep a note of where you started and work in small
increments while your buddy reports on how the sound changes.

If your buddy's ears are good, his tuning precise and the filters in his rig
aren't drastically altering your signal, you can make your final adjustments
that way.

Be sure to check and adjust both Upper and Lower sidebands. You can do both
sidebands on any band.

[Elecraft] Mic Options (WAS: Heil handmike discontinued.)

A typical electret does very well on a K2. Electrets are not necessarily a
high-impedance element. The impedance the rig sees will be the value of
the dropping resistor used to supply d-c bias to the mic element hot side.
Since the d-c voltage source for the bias is grounded for audio (has large
capacitors to ground in the circuit), the resistor becomes the audio load
between the audio line and ground. My electret uses a 1k resistor, so its
impedance is 1k ohms.

It is true that a high-impedance mic won't normally sound good on a rig
expecting a fairly low impedance mic, like the K2. Connecting a typical
high-impedance mic to a low impedance will normally cause the lows to be
lost, making the mic sound very bright or tinny. Very few such mics are
still around. Even the venerable D-104 was updated with an amplifier in
the base to convert the very high (appx 0.5 megohm) impedance of its crystal
element to the lower impedance most current Ham rigs want.

My mic is 'homebrew' - using an inexpensive ( $5 USD) electret element
mounted in a hand mic enclosure that originally contained a cheap dynamic
element. The electret element has a frequency response far, far greater than
the K2 needs: from about 30 Hz to about 16 kHz. The transmitted bandwidth is
controlled entirely by the K2's SSB module filter.

People tell me it sounds excellent on the air.

[Elecraft] K2 XTALS

2005-05-27 Thread m1bnw
I am buiding a K2 sn 004149 from an earlier non built K2 sn 000571 up to rev
'B' on the new 'B' pc boards.
I also have an early KSB2 SSB unit.

All the above has the original XTALS for the CW filter and SSB unit.ie 4.195MHz
-20.
I have read lots of comments on the audio quality because of the tight band
pass of the original SSB unit.
I know that Elecraft have produced some modifications in the form of 14 new
XTALs and a capacitor upgrade kit.

Does anyone have experience of these mods ?
Is there a basic capacitor upgrade that one can do first of all?
Or is changing all the XTALs and adding new capacitors the best solution?
Or is the original configuration ok?

RE: [Elecraft] K2 XTALS

2005-05-27 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Colin,

There are 2 separate things here - Elecraft's specs to the xtal vendor for
motional inductance were tightened on or about SN 2600. If you have a set
that is older, you will likely benefit from installing a new set of crystals
(do not mix new with the older crystals in any one filter (CW or SSB).

Secondly, yes Elecraft has widened the SSB filter bandwidth from 2.0 to 2.3
(or 2.4) kHz. Only a few capacitors in the filter are changed, and you
likely have the capacitors for the narrower filter. Weigh the pros and cons
of the wider or narrower bandwidth - the narrower filter provides a bit more
'punch' to a QRP SSB signal, but is a bit more critical in positioning the
passband correctly. The wider passband results in a more natual sounding
transmitted signal. Take your pick based on your operating desires, both
work well.

If you do decide to change the fiilter bandwidth, it is easier to install
the capacitors during initial construction - it is not really difficult to
do it after assembly, but decidedly easier to put the capacitors in before
the crystals are installed.

Don W3FPR

All the above has the original XTALS for the CW filter and SSB
 unit.ie 4.195MHz -20.
I have read lots of comments on the audio quality because of the
tight band pass of the original SSB unit.
I know that Elecraft have produced some modifications in the form
of 14 new XTALs and a capacitor upgrade kit.

Does anyone have experience of these mods ?
Is there a basic capacitor upgrade that one can do first of all?
Or is changing all the XTALs and adding new capacitors the best solution?
Or is the original configuration ok?

Re: [Elecraft] Mic Options (WAS: Heil handmike discontinued.)

2005-05-27 Thread Bill NY9H

I go with RON on this one.

After 30 years working ( under contract) with companies
that include Sennheiser, AKG and Shure Brothers, all who
actually manufacture microphone elements. They taught me some things.

I have bought a few Sennheiser boom headsets on Ebay... great headphones ,,
and i have some mics for my K2 icoms and tentecs made from
electret elements scrapped from telephones...nortel, panasonic.

ALL electrets are WAY TOO GOOD for communications audio
even the one you get at radio shack for $ .99 US. Just stuff it in a gooseneck
and you have a GREAT base station mic don't forget the ptt switch...
another $ 1.29.

It's Sooo cheap you owe it a try.

bill

2005-05-27 Thread Lisa Jones

Hamcom is coming next week! June 3, 4 and 5. Y'all better come see me!

I am coming out from behind my telephone and computer to meet and greet
AND I am bringing lots of goodies to sell- including the new T1's.

Any Elecraft Enthusiasts are more than welcome to come by and help out
at the booth. Don Brown KD5NDB and I will be working all three days and
would really like to have some of you help us out. You will have a lot
of fun sharing your experiences and expertise with those inquiring
minds. Don has been involved in Elecraft products from the early days
and is very knowledgable about our proucts. He has built just about
everything we have- many times over.

You can email me directly, [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you know when you would
like to help out, or just stop by the booth and we can set up a time.

Also, if you have nothing else to do Friday morning I could use a
little set-up help, but I would need to know ahead of time to get you in
early!

I am really looking forward to my first trip outside the Dallas airport
and especially to meeting all of you!

The office will be closed Monday, May 30th, but will check my emails 1st
thing Tuesday morning.

Lisa

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #4913

2005-05-27 Thread Jim W7RY

I guess that I have better get to building #4914!

It has been a busy month and lots of travel for work! As my friend (and
co-worker) Chuck Bland (N6DBT) advised me... To take it on the road and
build in the hotel room. I may just do that!

Ken, KG0WX now has his new K2 #4913 on the air -- worked him on 7.040 just a

He bought his after seeing mine at a local hamfest, and he commented to me
that he still can't believe what the receiver can hear, even on a dead band
as 40 is right now.
