[Elecraft] K1 tuning rate ... is 150 KHz too wide?

2005-08-05 Thread Sanger, Joseph
I use the 150 KHz range, and have little trouble with it ... yes, you have to
tune slowly ... ok, no big deal. (having said that, however, my main interest
in CW leaves me in the lower 80 KHz anyway!)

I am, however, looking forward to the smoother tuning on the K2 that was just
delivered to my apartment yesterday ... of course, it will take a month or so
to begin using it!

[Elecraft] RE: K1 tuning rate... is 150 kHz too wide?

2005-08-05 Thread Peter Wollan
I have my K1 at 150 (actually about 175) kHz and I like it. There's
quite a bit of activity above 7100, and there are the beacons at 14100.
If (when?) I get 30 meters, it will be nice to be able to check WWV.
Also, the K1 is capable of Hellschrieber, I think, though I haven't yet
found software that doesn't use SSB for this. And if I get the Ten-tec
6m transverter, having the wider range on 20m is important.

The tuning is a bit twitchy, but not really difficult or fatiguing. I
have no trouble zero-beating, or tuning the display to 14100.0, for
example. The only time I really had trouble with the tuning was in a
contest, using the memory buttons, my finger slipped and hit the tuning
knob -- but I've heard of that happening to others, it's a knob
placement thing, not tuning range.

Some people have written that they changed from 150 to 80. I haven't
read of anyone changing from 80 to 150. I think if you know you'll
never use the wider range, then the narrow range is better -- but if you
want to see what's out there, try the wider range and find out.
Replacing the cap is really pretty easy.

Hi,

I have and use the Buddipole over 2 years now and I'm extremely
satisfied !!! It is like a big LEGO block that you can experiment
antenna world.

Very robust and quality construction. The antenna is very effective.

Many QSOs, could be built in minute, light weight, small size, for a
backpacker... a must !!!

K2 #3090 So far so good, it's still working after my 3rd qso, The tuner just

Hi Roland,

Because I have several Icom transceivers, I wired my K2 to match the Icom
microphone pin assignments for the audio circuit and PTT (I haven't wired
the up/down buttons, but may add them later). In addition to convenient
interchangeability, the output level of the Icom-compatible microphones
(hand, desk, and Heil boom set) is fairly high, making it easy to drive the
K2 to full output and run VOX without difficulty.

The electret condenser element in these mics requires power for the FET
preamp in the element. I wire a 2.2K resistor to the +5 volt available on
the K2 header to provide phantom power on the hot lead to the mic.

By the way, there is some confusion about the DC power required by electret
elements. It is not a polarizing voltage. A standard condenser element
requires a polarizing voltage (typically 48 volts is used) for the condenser
plus power for a preamp that raises the very low output level to something
useful. However, an electret is a permanently polarized condenser, where
permanent is a relative term. Most such elements are guaranteed to retain
adequate polarization for at least 10 years, but 100 years is not unexpected
in practice, without the need for any external polarizing source. (I'm still
using Radio Shack electret elements that I bought for less than $1.50 each
nearly 20 years ago. No problems.) A voltage of 2 to 10 volts is typically
required to power the built-in preamp, usually an FET stage. The K2 makes 5
volts readily available, whereas the Icom rigs provide 8 volts for this
purpose.

Let me know if you need more information on this topic.

WHAT are the changes to R11 and R30 Everyone is referring to them,
but
no-one has said what they are!!

Must be a dark secret, Grif. Nobody seems to want to tell, apparently
least of all the folks who report having performed the mods!

A small difference in power isn't worth consideration vs the importance of a
clean signal. A change from 4 w to 2 w is only 3 db which is not notable
for audio difference. Thus some of us who have owned for the entire time
haven't paid any long lasting attention. I have never operated any QRP rig
at it's full power. The reduced power has a huge advantage in battery life
and has little to no impact on the receiving station's ability to copy.

Here is what Gary at Elecraft had to say. I went by his guide lines. 33
ohms worked well in my case. Your milage may very. Yes it is OK to
change R30 do not go any more than 47 ohms. (See below)

Hi All;
Here is the comments from Gary at Elecraft concerning the Low Power
conidition of the KX-1.

Those output levels are typical and are pretty normal. You will only get
3-4w if 13.8 to 14.0VDC is used, and the load is a good 50 ohm non-reactive
match.

The KX1 is not designed to produce 4-5w (or more) like the K1 can, as it
has

a much simpler transmitter and is optimized for mainly portable and battery
use.

If all parts are correct, you can safely increase R30 at the base of the PA
transistor Q6, but not more than 33-47 ohms or increased spurious output
will result. 33 ohms would be a good first value to try.

 Thoughts anyone?

After some more debugging it appears that the ksb2 is causing the problem.
Removing it returns tx power to normal levels. Some might say, good you
don't need ssb anyway.

Looking at the dac u2 I find that pin 5 is at 6v when it should be ~.6v on
tx and rx. Removing Q1 makes no difference so it appears that u2 is the
problem.

Any thoughts on this?

Re: [Elecraft] Question about Buddipole antenna

2005-08-05 Thread Roland Elvie Whitsitt
I've also had my buddie pole for over 2 years. My 1st 10 out of 11 contacts
with it were DX on ten meters. All on 5 watts. It's a really great, albeit
expensive, antenna. The little clips are worn out but they sell
replacements for any worn part. I also use just one of the elements like a
whip or buddi stick on my car (stationary!) and it works just as well. I've
used this antenna a lot! Performance starts to drop on 40, but then I'm
qrp. Sure it would be fine with more power. Now though, I find that
nothing really beats 150' wire (or as long as possible) and my auto tuner on
30 meters to 160meters. Still for sneaking a quick qso at work, it's nice
to stick one element in the cb mount on the car and work. I use a swr
analyzer to find resonance. Oh yeah, I couldn't imagine trying to use this
without an analyzer or you will be fiddling with it forever trying to get
the swr down. Or you could just get it in the ball park and tune it.

Hope this helps.

I live in an apartment and use the Buddipole as my only antenna. I have
all the parts necessary to make either the standard dipoles or vertical.

All I can say is that it's fantastic. On 2 meters through 20 meters, it's
a fantastic performer. On 30 and 40 meters, it isn't bad, considering how
short it is.
