Re: [Elecraft] Keying Mod; Construction technique

2005-11-14 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka

The way I like to do it is to get an X-acto knife or another sharp knife
and carefully score the trace in two spots. Use repeated shallow cuts.
Heat up the little bit between the score marks with a soldering iron and
it should lift off (and stick somewhere you don't want it to stick, but
that's just my luck.)

[Elecraft] N1MM Logger and the K2

2005-11-14 Thread Don Nesbitt
N1MM Logger is a very sophisticated piece of contesting software that
provides logging and computer interfacing for everything from one operator -
one rig stations all the way to big multioperator - multi-rig setups in a
fully networked environment. Beginning with Version 5.10.17 (the current
version is now 5.11.0), the N1MM Logger Contesting Software now includes the
Elecraft K2 in the list of radios that can be chosen from the Configuration
menu. Until now, K2 users had to pick the generic "Kenwood" radio which
used very similar programming commands. At this point, most of the code for
the K2 still uses the Kenwood commands but I understand that listing the K2
in the Configuration Options is the first step to writing code that will be
more specific to the K2.

If you are currently using an older version of N1MM, I'd encourage you to
update to the latest version in order to take advantage of the latest
inclusions. Be aware that you must first install version 5.7.2 before you
can install the latest version! Carefully read the directions on the site.
So you don't loose anything, you could install the new versions in a
different directory and play with them for a while.

One item has already been the included for the K2. The "set filter code"
for one mode (SSB Wide) is now K2 specific (K22;FW1;K0;) - the rest of
the filter codes are still in Kenwood format. If you are interested in
knowing more about setting the filter codes, you could check out my little
very non-technical treatise in the N1MM help files and quickly set the codes
for SSB Narrow, CW Wide, etc. To access this file go to www.n1mm.com and
select "Support" and then "Supported Radios" from the menus at the top of
the main page - then scroll to "Elecraft."

Apparently a number of other items have already been "fixed" that allow for
better control over "split" functions and the use of the K2 in Single
Operator Two Radio (SO2R) contesting.More will likely follow with new
releases. The N1MM Logger is freeware and available for download at
www.n1mm.com.

It's nice to see the K2 getting recognized as a serious contesting radio!

I don't have any affiliation with the group, just am a very satisfied user
of the program. 73 es gud contesting and dxing -- Don N4HH

Hi Slater,

Check to see if you have the rig set to TEST mode instead of OPER. You
change this setting in CW mode by using the VOX button. If it is in TEST
mode the rig doesn't transmit and the diagnostic message is "Lo P" when you
try to run TUNE. (It happened to me once after I did some practice sending
with a new Hex Key paddle.)

Good luck,

[Elecraft] ATU problem

2005-11-14 Thread Slater Tubman
I have been troubleshooting the internal battery on my K2 with a lot
of assistance from Don Wilhelm. So far I have not found the problem,
so I put the top back on the K2 and plugged in to external power. I
have a ladder line-fed dipole on ANT 1 and my triband beam on ANT2.

I have in ATU installed.

When I attempted to tune the rig, I got a Lo P reading. First time I
ever had that.

The ATU manual says that POWER setting is too low. I get the same
result, regardless of the power setting, regardless of the band,
regardless of the antenna.

Is old age getting me, or have I overlooked something very
basic, or what?

Any advice will be appreciated.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Muting

2005-11-14 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bob,

This was discussed some time back, but I can't find the details at the
moment. The essentials follow:

You can dig into the K2 and find the /MUTE line (on the Control Board) that
goes from the microprocessor to the muting FETs Q6 and Q7. Insert a series
resistor in this line (try 2.2k and experiment lower from there, using the
highest value that allows K2 to mute normally with this resistor inserted),
and bring your external muting line into the K2 such that the gates of Q6
and Q7 are grounded when you wish to mute the K2 from the external control
source (open for normal operation).

This will mute the audio - keeping RF out of the non-transmitting K2 is
another matter.

Don W3FPR

Switch the RX of unused radio to dummy load when transmitting with the other
one.
If you want to do it "perfect" , you can use low power coax relays (cx120 or
something smaller it depends on PWR u use) or better , transfer relays.
If u use high isolation switch between the two radios and one antenna it
should be enough :)
100W is +50dBm and if u have a switch (manual or coaxial) with at least 60dB
of isolation it should not harm the other radio (-10dbm on ant port or
0,1mW).
If u r using 5W QRP even better :)

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer

2005-11-14 Thread Leigh L Klotz, Jr.
I have seen and tried this unit, both in the field at AmTech day
(http://fars.k6ya.org) and at the Timewave Pacificon booth, and know the
pepole (Dale NX6S et. al.) who designed it. It is very nice. I want
one, but is expensive. If I had a lab budget I would get one.

At AmTech day I hooked a piece of twin lead to it and got the frequency
it was 1/2 wavelength on. It agreed with my Autek VA1 but had a few
more decimal places, and was much easier to use, giving the results in
real time. Dale also said I could have terminated it in a resistor and
gotten a Smith chart for finding the characteristic impedance, also in
real time.

At Pacifocon, I hooked a Maldol 20m whip to it, saw two dips in the SWR
curve (one at about 16MHz and the other somewhere equally useless, 9MHz
I think). I clipped a foot of bus wire to it (I trick I think I learned
from N6KR at a PAARA club prsentation) and the dip went down a bit but
not to 14MHz. The analyzer showed me this graphically in real time on
its screen, and also on a computer which was slaved to it (though not
required).

Then I walked off with Dale's BNC connector. (I couldn't fit the
analyzer in my pocker.)

[Elecraft] Re-cap of Polar Bear November 2005 Run

2005-11-14 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

Well I have to say Sunday was one of the better Polar Bear Expeditions that
I have had since we started do this event. The weather was way too warm for
this time of year. 68' F when we arrived at the top and 50' F when we packed
up to come home.

Ed, WA3WSJ and I hiked up to the Pulpit Rock in 40 minutes with his dog
Trevor, WA3WSJ/DOG. We hiked up the steep road and my knee did not bother
me. Ed had a harder time than I did because he was carrying a 50 lb. pack,
that is the weight I take every time I hike.

We had a total of six Polar Bear operators and Polar Dog with a fleece
jacket on. Wait until I get the pictures up on the web. :-) Everyone had a
blast, especially me.

I worked a total of 13 station to place my total count of QSO's from the
Appalachian Trail up to 449. Unfortunately I did not work any other Polar
Bears. :-( But I did manager some Great Q's from the AT. I worked OO4ON in
Belgium on 30 meters. I heard him calling CQ and he came back to my first
call. He gave me a 339. Then I worked EA5KY from Spain on 40 meters. He gave
me a 549 and could not believe that I was QRP. Only drag was the RTTY on 40
meters but I was working around 7.020 in the clear. I was using my K1 @ 5
watts into the homebrew vertical.

After we packed up we hit the pizza shop for a large pie and some beer, not
bear. :-) I can't wait until December. I am planning a Polar Bear Sprint
where for a Saturday where everyone can play for points, even station
operating from home in the warm temp.

I will make a post when the pictures are up on the web site.

72 and Thanks,
Ron Polityka

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer

2005-11-14 Thread Stuart Rohre
You can determine the sign of the reactance by simply tuning higher in
frequency. IF the reactance increases it is inductive, if it DECREASES, it
is capacitive reactance. Remember the basic formula for inductive is Xl =
2Pi fL, while the inverse formula is for capacitive reactance, thus it
decreases with frequency increase.

I kind of agree, it would have been a good idea, about
2 or 3 years ago.

I think the market for antenna analyzers is too
crowded now, and with the TenTec/TAPR and N2PK network
analyzers also available (I have the latter), that
(very small) market is also nearly saturated.

The most useful tool would be a MF-HF-VHF-UHF version
of the Micro908. Just too costly to build.

[Elecraft] FS: Assembled KX-1

2005-11-14 Thread Bekir Kemal Ataman
Hi,

I have got an assembled Elecraft KX-1 with full acessories (20, 30, 40 m +
ATU + Paddle), which was assembled by Ruchan Ozatay (TA2AH).

I would like to sell the assembled rig (plus all manuals, etc.) because I
have bought an Elecraft K2, again from TA2AH, after the KX1. (He has built
himself a K-1 after that.) The KX1 is in excellent condition because it was
used for a very short period of time.

I would like to sell the assembled KX-1 for US$ 450.
Alternatively, I am willing to swap it with an assembled KPA100 kit.

Offers in Europe preferred (because of postage and money transfer costs)
and yes I have contacted qrpproject.de but could not get a response to any
of my mails nor fax.

Please let me know if you are interested.

[Elecraft] re: Antenna Analyzer

2005-11-14 Thread George Heron N2APB
Just FYI, in regards to your question about "which antenna analyzer to buy"
... there are only 3 Micro908 Kits currently remaining in stock out of the
latest round of several hundred. We're not sure when we'll be doing another
round.

Also FYI ... the Micro908 is the base architecture of the forthcoming
"SDR-908" portable SDR project (http://www.amqrp.org/kits/sdr908) The
project on this web page is shown in a classic "QRP monobander xcvr" format,
but the components are all the same as the Micro908 ... HC908 daughtercard,
DSPx daughtercard, LCD, pushbuttons, rotary encoder, serial connector for
program & DSP updates, and of course the "DDS card", which can be either the
existing DDS Daughtercard, the new DDS-60 Daughtercard, or a *pair* of each
for controllable IQ slicer phase control, OR a new dual-AD9834 DDS card done
in concert with Lyle Johnson for deluxe IQ slicer control. This Micro908
hardware configuration is designed to work with the SoftRock version 5
project from KB9YIG, interfacing its RF front end and driving the QSD
sampler (and the forthcoming QSE exciter for Tx function.)

So, current Micro908 owners will be able to use the DDS card-of-choice plus
their little SoftRock boards to have the first-ever truly portable,
battery-operated Software Defined Radio.

Whew, confusing? Not really ... the project has been underways for several
months and works real nicely now. Details are currently being documented
and will be available in a few days.

[Elecraft] antenna analyzers

2005-11-14 Thread Steve Jackson
FWIW: the AmQRP's Micro908 is essentially the kit
version of the Palstar (manufactured) unit. The
Micro908 has lots more functionality than its
factory-built sister, including a well-supported DSP
engine that is the same as the core of the Elecraft
K2DSP. And, the Micro908 is a kit, a big bonus to me
and I presume many other Elecrafters. It is, however,
an also nearly 100% surface-mount kit. I prefer SMD
assembly to through-hole, myself; YMMV.

Antenna anlyzers are important to me. I have (at one
time or another) owned all versions of the MFJ-259,
and also had an Autek RF1. I currently own the
Micro908, the MFJ-207, an AEA Wireless analyzer, and
the Autek VA1 and RF5. Each have their best use. If
I had to have only one HF analyzer, it'd be the
Micro908.

[Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer

2005-11-14 Thread J F
Hi Kurt,

I'd vote for the Micro908 (only three kits left!). I
built a "Round 1" kit and learned a lot doing so.
As far as performance, I'm comparing it to the RF-1.
The 908 is so much easier to use, and I feel provides
better results (closer to anticipated design values).

One of the great things about the AmQRP kit is the
support. There are folks writing all sorts of
software, improving routines and adding to the
function list. It's all shared! What more could you
ask for fron an competitively priced kit?

I like the fact that you can calibrate the unit. I'll
be adding the backlit display in the future (nocturnal
antenna tweaker). There will be a new DDS shipping
shortly which will extend the usable range to 60Mhz.

73,
Julius
n2wn

PS I liked it so much I bought another kit...

I would imagine that getting the Palstar Antenna
Analyzer would be just as easy to obtain. I imagine
dealers that they have would discount 10%-13% and the
cost would be slightly more than a 259B and it is very
good quality. I have heard good stories and bad ones
about the 259B. However the one at our Museum in DC
works flawlessly and the guy I work with has one at
home and no problems.

Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer

2005-11-14 Thread Lambs, Dick & Judy
For a bargain approach, you might consider an antenna noise bridge
instead of an analyzer. Used in conjunction with your receiver or
transceiver (no transmitting needed), you can readily find the
antenna resonant frequency. If you want to know resistance,
capacitive reactance, and inductive reactance, for any frequency, you
can compute them from the dial readings. The MFJ-202B noise bridge
is $60. There are kit providers, and there's usually at least one on
ebay for around $15 to $30.

Dick, K0KK

Anyone have a favorite they would like to recommend?
I'm leaning toward the Micro908 from the American QRP
Club. Anyone want to talk me into an MFJ or another
brand?

Hi Larry!

I'm glad you received your certificate. I was on 20m and 40m psk31. We
had so many polar bears up at Pulpit Rock that I never got the chance to
operate on cw! K5PAX won the Polar Bear Claw. I worked him on 20m
psk31. I had a ball on psk31 and the other Polar Bears had great fun
too. After the event, we all went to a local watering hole and eat and
drank some beer -hi! We Polar Bears get hungry up there. I hiked up the
mountain with Ron, WB3AAL, but my pack weighted way to much for me. My
pack weighted in at around 50lbs! I don't like it go over 30lbs. So
guys, if you didn't hear me on cw, try me the next Polar Bear Event as I
will operate cw. The weather was just gorgeous blue skies and 68' then
the sun set and the temp dropped into the 50s. I took my hiking buddy
Trevor this time as he went nuts when he saw my backpack. I took his dog
jacket along and he used as the sun set. The Polar Bears operated on
20&40 PSK31, 40cw, 20cw, 30cw, 75ssb, 2m, 6m. We tried to work all who
called us, but I know we missed many. So look for us in December and
once again the first to work WA3WSJ will receive a "museum quality"
polar bear claw replica with your call engraved into it! Look for the
picture of it on the Polar Bear Page soon.

Yes larry send the plaque to me WA3WSJ and we will use it for a Polar
Bear Event etc. Thanks a bunch for the help!

[NJQRP] RE: [EPA-QRP] Update Polar Bear November 2005 Run

2005-11-14 Thread Edward R. Breneiser

72,
Ed, WA3WSJ

Ed yes thank you very nice the xyl fell in love with it.I just got back
in from tonights event I never heard you 20 I think was too long and 40
was a mess with the ssb and tty in there. But I enjoyed the walk anyway.
Ed, I still have that small plaque 3x5 it is a relief in brass foil on
mahogany. Mother and cub. That I made for the Polar Bears should I send
it to you or Ron? It is still 56F but very windy... My Lap Top battery
lasted almost 3hours tonight. I carried my jumpstart battery pack it is
very heavy for hiking but has lots of power and will generally out last
me. 72 Larry

My old Hallicrafters FPM-300 generated CW at 1750 Hz,a thoroughly
unpleasant tone, and the reason why I quickly installed an RIT circuit in
my 300, which lacks one.

Hi Vic,

You wrote:

Your solution of adding a second BFO just for receiving would
theoretically work, except that you would need to use the 'real' sidetone
pitch for zero-beating.

Quite right, and I am sorry if I was not clear about the zero-beating issue.
Had better tie the ribbons on this BFO knob idea!!
