[Elecraft] re K1 construction:relays and VFO range

2006-01-28 Thread RPende4802
Good morning, everyone and thank you in advance.

I have had smooth sailing up to page 37 of the Rev. F manual.

1) In the lower right corner of the page the instructions are to tap BAND
twice...to change to the next band...and then two or more times to return to
7.0 Mhz. I am setting the radio up for 20 and 15 M. When I follow the
instructions the display, which opens up with E42 as expected, switches between
14.0 and
7.0. There is no 15M display. The relays click and are well positioned and
what I think is pin 1 and 10 of each relay show continuity while in the
circuit.
Should I be seeing a frequency for the 15 M band?

2) What issues arise if the VFO is set for 150 instead of 80 kHz?

Thanks for your help,

Bob Pendergast

RE: [Elecraft] re K1 construction:relays and VFO range

2006-01-28 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bob,

The K1 does not yet know that you have configured the board for 20 and 15 -
that is why you see the display for 40 and 20 only (these are defaults in
the firmware). You will set the proper band using the menu a bit later when
you get to page 39 and do the band assignments.

The only issues that I know about in the selection of 80 or 150 kHz range
for the VFO is that the tuning rate will be about twice as fast with the 150
kHz range compared with the 80 kHz range - most folks seem to like the 80
kHz range, but it is matter of personal choice and operating preferences.

[Elecraft] Scratches

2006-01-28 Thread Larry Makoski W2LJ
I found an old Radio Shack amplified speaker in my junk box and decided
to hook it up to the K2 for some extra added punch. It fits nicely on
top of the K2 but I was wary of scratching the finish. So I applied to
the bottom of the speaker, several of those round felt pads that are
meant for the bottom of furniture legs. No more worries about
scratching the K2!

Howdy Larry:

A while back I bought a roll of stuff used to line your kitchen drawers and
shelvesit is called Contact and looks like a cloth embroidery but is
made of some kind of material that is absolutely non-skid.

I use it to keep my smaller QRP rigs from scratching the tops of my larger

It is great stuff and doesn't cost muchyou can easily cut it with

Believe I got it from Ace hardware but it should be in any store like Lowes,

Give it a try.you'll probably discover more uses for it in your shack.

3M makes some small adhesive-backed feet that can often be found in the
cabinet hardware section of a home improvement center like Home Depot or
Lowes. A similar product is smaller felt pads that attach to cabinet doors
to keep them from banging when closing.

[Elecraft] inoperative KNB2

2006-01-28 Thread Richard Haendel
My KNB2 noise blanker doesn't appear to work hardly at all. It never has worked
well since I built it. I recently downloaded some notes that Gary Surrency
sent to K0WA. Gary's comments include the following: You can check to see if
Noise Gate Q5 is blanking by touching a resistor of 1K - 2K to the base of Q5
with the other end connected to +12 volt source. This should turn on Q5 and
result in a large loss of signal... I did this but I only got a slight
reduction in signal. Does this indicate that Q5, PNA is weak and should
be replaced?
Comments anyone ?

[Elecraft] Amplifier T/R Keying problem

2006-01-28 Thread William Stewart
I have a problem trying to key a homebrew amplifier with my K2 (S/N 5251).
I am using the two-transistor T/R circuit from the Mods web page, and the
T/R relay pulls in as expected, however there is an annoying thump in the
received audio when the T/R returns to the receive state. I am using the
separate receive antenna (Rx) input. If I disconnect the receive antenna
line from the amp, there is no thump. If I trigger the T/R relay driver
circuit manually, there is no thump. It seems that there is some
interaction between the receiver unmuting and the T/R relay going to the
receive state simultaneously that causes this thump. Any experience or
ideas?

Thanks,

Bill Stewart

Very, very easy to use. Very intuitive. I am synchronizing it between

[Elecraft] WB3AAL's Butternut HF9V Project Update

2006-01-28 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

Today I took off my 160 meter coil from my ground mounted Butternut HF9V. I
also added more radials onto the system, total of 24 radials now. I plan on
buying a DX Engineering Radial Plate and add more radials to the system,
hopefully a total of 60 radials in all.

Check out www.wb3aal.com for SWR readings, I am happy with the outcome. I
still need to plant the radials in the ground but that will be after I have
the radial plate in ground.

[Elecraft] KX1 Mod / EPS1 12V DC-DC converter - WORKS!

2006-01-28 Thread Mike KL7R
I got an EPS-1 DC-DC converter in a horse trade about a year ago
and thought it would be a cool addition to my KX1 to jump the
9Volt internal batteries up to 12Volts.

The EPS1 was either dead when I received it or I killed it
because when I plugged it in to a battery source as the switching FET surface
mount transistor caught on fire!
It looked like one of those 4th of July snakes burning only
with sparklies.

I let it set on the shelf for a while and then tried a
couple of times to resurrect it with no luck. I tried
replacing the blown FET with a 2N7000 but it didnt work.

I then ordered a new MAX1771 DC-DC converter controller chip
and when replaced the one on the EPS-1 board with the new one
it started putting out 12 volts with about 4 volts in.

I experimented with load resistors and it was clear the 2N7000
switching FET would not handle the current so I swapped it out
for a Radio Shack IRF510. The IRF510 didnt even get warm with
an amp load so I tried running the KX1 off of the modified
EPS-1.It worked great. I was getting 12 volts from
a little 9 volt battery and was getting full power out of the KX1
rather than the lower output I get when running off the internal
9Volt batteries.

I thought I could just disconnect one of the 4.5V AA packs in the
KX1 and then put the EPS-1 inside of the KX1 but it turned out
that 4.5 volts was too low to get reliable switching from the EPS-1.

I then went to Radio-Shack and picked up a 4-AAA battery holder
(RS270-411) which fits nicely into the space of one of the AA
original battery holders.I removed both original battery
holders and installed the EPS-1 where the other original holder
was.

It worked FB. I had to cut a small hole in the back of the
case so that I could access the RS770-411 on/off switch and
used double sided foam tape to secure the EPS-1 and battery
pack.

I have no idea how long the batteries will last. I do know
that I have had the KX1 for a couple of years and have only
changed the batteries once in that time so I imagine that
they will last long enough for my use. Ill see.

EMBRES no longer makes the EPS-1 but the schematic is
pretty simple and comes pretty much right off the datasheet.

Maxim-IC makes a litle MAX1771 evaluation kit that might
be a direct replacement for the EPS-1 although I dont
know how much it costs.

H. If you can fit one 4-AAA holder into a KX1, then you could also
fit two of them in. With Lithium or Alkaline AAAs, you'd then have your
12 V at much better efficiency than you get out of the DC-DC converter
;)

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2006-01-28 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
I slowly grow inured of my own cooking. I am regaining some of my lost
skills though. One day I may even grow to like it :) However, I am
eating well and getting used to cleaning the house, washing the dishes,
and doing laundry. One of my radio friends wants to help me get a 2
wavelength 160 meter loop into the trees. I had to tell him to hold off
since the precommercial thin is not yet complete. Once that is done I am
ready to start stringing more wire up into the fir trees. With a tuner
the loop should work from 10 meters to 160 meters with not much effort.
Now if only I had a little more time to use my radio on the air!
The weather has alternated from thick snow to very thick rain to a
short burst of sun over the last two days. We only had five inches of
snow so travel was not much impeded yesterday evening. The log trucks
beat a path to within a mile of my house so Pat's car brought me home
easily. The same could not be said for my truck. It needs new tires and
a lot of weight in the back to make up for its lack of front wheel drive.
Oregon snow is not like the snow I grew up with; it is very slippery since
the temperatures barely get below freezing here let alone get cold. At
forty below zero Fahrenheit (or Centigrade for that matter) snow allows
one traction. I doubt it has ever gotten below zero here in the Coast
Range let alone grown cold. Then the folks in Europe would not complain
of our climate with their current cold snap. Hopefully that will break
for them soon.
In other news: we will be running the nets at their new times once
again this week.  Last week propagation jumped all over the place;
especially during the forty meter net when Lloyd in Maryland was easy and
Tom in Missouri was tough. Never can tell what is going to happen these
days. Spring is on the way however and the sun is slowly returning to our
latitude. I hope the bands treat us well tomorrow evening. With any luck
we will hear Geoff from far off Scotland!

you for the web space Dan.

Hi Harvey,

The T1 should certainly work with the XV50. In the T1 manual we mention
a reduced tuning range on 6 meters; this is a necessary compromise to
allow the T1 to be used on the lower HF bands. Losses may be somewhat
higher on this band, depending on the reactances involved. You should
use low power when tuning up the antenna, and be sure to keep power
down to 20 W SSB/CW and 10 W AM/FM during normal operation.
