[Elecraft] OT - Looking for an audio-range VCO

2006-02-06 Thread Tom Hammond

I'll try to keep this short (again).

I'm in the process of trying to design a circuit for use by mobile HF
operators to assist them with remotely tuning their antennas from the
driver's seat.

The circuit I _was_ going to use requires a couple LM-358 Dual OpAmps
and a single 74LS629 dual VCO.

Unfortunately, the 74LS629 is becoming very difficult to find in
small quantities. DigiKey wants me to buy 50 of 'em at $2+ each, and
Mouser doesn't carry them at all. Fortunately, I CAN find the LM-358
at DigiKey, but I usually don't have enough of an order to make their
$25 minimum (without a handling fee).

Anyway, I'm looking for a possible substitution for the 74LS629 Dual
VCO IC. Either another IC or possible a discrete-component circuit
for the VCO which will have to run in the audible hearing range. I'd
prefer to use an IC VCO if possible however.

If anyone might have some suggestions for a possible substitute for
the 74LS629, or a suitable discrete-component VCO, I'd love to hear
from you (DIRECT to my e-mail, please).

Thanks,

73,

Tom HammondN0SS

[Elecraft] KX1 with HF Packer Amp

2006-02-06 Thread Paul Webb
Some discussion lately on using the K2 to drive the HF Packer Amp. I
bought the amp kit some time ago and have not yet built it. My main reason
for buying was to use it to beef up a KX1 signal.

Has anyone had any experience driving the Packer Amp with a KX1? My KX1
puts out 4 watts on 40 meters and 3.5 watts on 20 meters. Should have
plenty of drive for the Amp.

Any comments and help will be very much appreciated.

They would put out 500-600 watts key down. That was always enough for me!!

I think the main problem would be commercial.  Although 400 watts would
make a noticeable difference, most hams who are in the market for an
amplifier want at least 800w.

Anything above 400W is illegal in this part of the world.

[Elecraft] KPA100 (or K2) Power control

2006-02-06 Thread Bill Coleman N2BC

I'm having a difficulty with the power control in a freshly built
KPA100. When I set the power to 50W then key up (TUNE), I get appx 25W
(indicated on the K2 and external wattmeter). If I barely move the
POWER control on the K2 output will jump to 50W indicated on both the K2
and wattmeter. Each TUNE cycle is the same.

I'm not sure if the problem is in the KPA100 or my K2, as the K2 is not
very 'stable' either. With the KPA100 disabled I set the K2 to say 5W,
then enter TUNE, I get appx 7W output (indicated on K2 and wattmeter),
minor touch on the POWER control will drop the power to 4W, exit TUNE
and it says 5W. It behaves this way with the KPA100 set OFF or with no
PA PS or completely disconnected.

Confused? Well, I am! The bare bones K2 overshoots it power setting,
with the KPA100 it under achieves. :-)

All of my testing has been done with a known good dummy load. The
'problem' is not band sensitive.

How 'stable' should the K2 POWER settings be - if I set it to 5W should
I be seeing 5W indicated on the K2? I thought that under a good load
condition the firmware would 'match' the requested power and actual
power within a few tenths or so.

I figure the K2 needs to be fixed before I fiddle more with the KPA100 -
yes? Now the hard questions... what, where, why is the sky blue?
(wanted to have one easy question!).

Thanks all

[Elecraft] K1 for sale, 4 band with autotuner and noise blanker

2006-02-06 Thread Mike Czuhajewski
This is not mine; I'm selling it for J. Frank Brumbaugh, W4LJD, a retired
engineer in his mid 80s, getting out of ham radio. (He used to provide a lot
of material for my column in the QRP Quarterly.) After I agreed to sell it
for him and he shipped it to me I played around with it on and off for a few
weeks, fixed a problem (intermittent RIT caused by a bad solder joint), and
now it's time to advertise it.

I don't have an outdoor antenna at present, but did play around with it on
my HP8640B/USM-323 signal generator and seems to receive well on all bands.
It puts out at least 5 watts on all 4 bands, maybe more if you tweak the
circuits. It covers at least the first 60 KHz of 40, 30, 20 and 15 meters
(going up to about 67 KHz over the lower ends). Although there is an
optional backlight now available for the display, this one does not have it.

K1 #00422
Internal antenna tuner
4 band module for 40, 30, 20, 15
Noise blanker
Homebrew power supply built into same type of Elecraft case as the K1 (will
supply a JPG photo if you want to see it)
Has some sort of add-on, flip-down, single leg stand on the front, which
does not appear to be a current Elecraft product.

No complete manual is included, although that can be downloaded from the
Elecraft web site. (He did send along his documentation book which includes
some marked up pages from the manual and sheets from the add-ons.) There is
also some sort of homebrew audio filter module mounted inside the case but
not hooked up and not tried. (I checked all 3 K1 filter settings and they
seem to work well.) Noted in passing--it would appear that this came from a
smoking environment, although I did wash off the cases which seems to have
helped some.

Asking $425 plus shipping (will be sent to US addresses only). Any
questions on the rig will be gladly entertained.

[Elecraft] JARC Capitol City Hamfest

2006-02-06 Thread Mark Baugh
Just had the the Capitol City Hamfest sponsored by
JARC in Jackson, MS and it was a success, IMHO. I set
up an Elecraft table and demonstrated my K2 and
KPA100/KAT100 in an EC2. I ran the Power Point
presentaion on my laptop and had a notebook of
pictures printed from the website of PA3CEV. Response
was very good and a number of other Elecrafters came
by to visit and help with testimonials about Elecraft.
I did not hear even one negative comment. I think
there will be some sales resulting from the efforts.
It was lots of fun and it sure is nice to have gear
that is so well thought of and accepted by the masses.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 with HF Packer Amp

2006-02-06 Thread Sandy W5TVW
That may be TOO much drive for the HF PAcker! I drive one on 160-20 meters
with a K1 and it takes about 1.5-2.0 watts to make the HF Packer deliver 35
watts out.
If you can't control the power output of the KX1, then you may have to change
the
values of the attenuator network in the input path of the HF Packer on the RF
board
therein.
I have had fantastic results from my HF Packer. Only complaint is it needs
a bit of modification of the hang time. Needs to be much shorter!
OK for SSB but no good for CW contest/net activity. Ok for casual QSO's.
Hang time once keyed is much too long for CW.

[Elecraft] VCO alignment problem

2006-02-06 Thread Richard Carter
I've been cruising through the assembly manual with no trouble at all until
I got to the VCO alignment. I can't get the measured voltage at R30 down
below 6.35 volts. I've installed the Rework Eliminator headers and I've set
the extended vfo range menu setting D19 to 'Y'. I've double-checked the
number of windings on T5 (16 red and 4 green windings), and C72 and L30 read
the right value. Here's what I measure.

035002.51V 040006.35V
070002.46V 073003.77V
12.77V 101503.27V
140002.43V 150004.03V
180002.23V 182003.32V
210002.19V 214502.50V
248003.99V 250004.35V
280003.30V 288004.14V

The board is assembled with an fine (.018in) solder. The label says it is
lead, tin, antimony, and silver with a rosin or zinc cloride core.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance.

newest kits will enable you to build a Plug Play Ready stock K2.

What this means is that after it's assembled and aligned, you can add
any internal option to your K2 by removing just the top cover and then
plugging in the option! Other than changing the jumpers on the mic
configuration header (on the front panel board) or perhaps adding some new
mod, we foresee no reason why you would ever need to disassemble your K2.

I look forward to meeting those of you who can attend the hamfest in
Orlando this weekend. (I'll be at the Elecraft booth Saturday until about
1:00 PM.)

[Elecraft] Anyone hear of an available K2?

2006-02-06 Thread Stephen W. Kercel

Elecrafters:

I had been intending to build a K2. Unfortunately, it looks like my
1983 vintage Argosy is reaching the end of its life sooner than I
expected, and alas, I am too busy with work responsibilities to build
a rig right now.

Anyway, I'm in the market for an already built K2. One without the
SSB function is preferred. However, prebuilt K2s are so rare that I'm
not picky about the configuration.

If anyone has word of one for sale please let me know.

BTW, I am aware of the one currently listed on eBay, and I have that
one on my watch list.
