Oh my goodness a slug-tuned one? Um, if it were me, I'd order the
correct one I need, and remove the one that's soldered in with being
kind to the circuit board in mind and kind or unkind to the inductor
itself as needed. I've had good success over my tronics career re-using
parts I've had to remove but good practice is to slap in a new one if
one is available at all. 73 de Alex NS6Y

RE: [Elecraft] replacement parts delay

2006-02-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

Where did you address the parts request? If it was to anything other than
[EMAIL PROTECTED], that alone would be adequate explaination for the delay.
If you did send the request to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and did not get a response
(automated though it may be) within a few hours, something went wrong.

I suggest you call Elecraft since you have had prior problems with email -
talk with Scott or Brian, or if you have part numbers, you can talk with Pam
or Lisa and they can handle it. You should receive your parts within a week
or less depending on the shipment mode. I receive Priority Mail in 3 days,
1st class takes about a week, and UPS ground is 4 or 5 days, and I am in
North Carolina which is a long way from Aptos, CA.

I don't know if you are among the 'guilty' or not, but in the past, I have
seen parts requests posted to the Elecraft reflector - The reflector is a
forum of Elecraft users, and of course is not the proper venue for such
things as parts requests - sometimes the proper folks at Elecraft will see
such a request and respond, but often times, they do not have the time to
monitor everything on the reflector, and such 'requests' may be missed.

My experience has been different.
The other week I sent an email to support at Elecraft with one technical
question and a parts question. In considerably less than an hour, I had a
detailed (tutorial, even) reply to my technical question and a note that the
parts question had been forwarded to the parts department. Minutes after
this, I received an acknowledgement from the parts department, and the part
in question went out in the next day's mail. All at no charge.

I can't imagine better customer service.

Must be nice. I never was able to contact anyone on my indoor dipole. Oh
well. I should be on the air this weekend though, hopefully for the Elecraft
net on Sunday. I bought an SGC Smartuner and plan on putting up a horizontal
loop on my roof this weekend. I spent last weekend making cables and routing
the feedline through the wall of my den and into a waterproof box outside
where the lightning arrestor is located. Now, I just need to run it outside
and up to the roof and run the antenna wire. I figure it's my best option
with deed restrictions and all. I think it'll be quite stealthy and work
better than the vertical dipole I originally planned. It'll be 2 WL long on
40 meters so I hope it's not too much of a cloud warmer on 20 and 40 meters.
It might even work half way decent on 80 meters.

RE: [Elecraft] Strange spurs on K2

2006-02-09 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bob,

Every 5kHz? That sounds strangely like a CAL PLL problem. Did you run CAL
PLL with the bottom cover off?, or is RFC15 on the bottom of the RF Board
open (check it with a continuity test - it may read the same voltage on both
ends even though it is open).

It is posible that the frequency shift is so slight that you did not notice
it in normal operation, but tuning slowly with a stronger signal hass
revealed its presence.

I suggest re-setting the Reference oscillator and then running CAL PLL
followed by CAL FIL - change each BFO by a bit and then set it back to where
it was. Then re-check to see if the condition is still present.

Do piezo buzzers make that noise? I've never disassembled one so I'm not
sure if they have those nice sparking contacts.

Another approach, since the original requestor was looking for a solid state

Touch your soldering iron to one of the wires and life that side up,

[Elecraft] Strange spurs on K2

2006-02-09 Thread Bob G3PJT

Hi

Using my XG2 I have noticed some strange spurs.

If I tune to 14060 with the XG2 ( or my other generator too)
then as I tune through 14060 then I hear a pronounced blip as I tune
across a fast tuning spur.

I also have spurs at every 5 kHz interval e.g at 14055, 14050 etc etc.

I can hear the same effect on 40 and 80 etc.

I tried this with my other generator at about the same 50uV level and I
can hear them on other bands too.
I don't know if this is a recent occurence or if it has been present for
sometime.

However I tried the same test on my other K2 and it shows the same effect.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

the end I did a reload and made sure that all the drivers for the new
motherboard where installed and not just the ones XP installed and it now
runs great, it decoded very weak PSK signals fine now just using the on
board sound card

I will fit the PC into the EC2 case and take some pictures for my web site.

All the best and thanks to those that offered help and advice (Don)

[Elecraft] K2 SN 5295

2006-02-09 Thread Craig D. Smith
K2 SN 5295 is alive and well! Had first 2 QSOs this morning (Indiana and
Oregon) on 20 CW with an indoor dipole. Build and alignment process was
smooth, methodical and quite enjoyable. No glitches at all. Thanks to all
of you on the Elecraft reflector for the good advice!
Now working on internal tuner so I can load my random wire on other bands.
Limited to stealth antennas here, so don't look for a booming signal, but I
hope to eventually make contacts on 160 thru 10. After the tuner, the 160
meter option, the noise blanker and the DSP await ;>) I used the
"rework eliminators" for the options that I have, and that went well also.
Will post a more detailed evaluation of that approach after I build and
install the options.

A couple of points from the K2 manual are unclear to me.

The Documentation mentions that if you use an external keyer, you still
need to use a stereo plug, with the keyed line going to the tip of the
plug and the center ring going unused. I was wondering if a coupling the
keyer line to the K2 key jack via a mono-to-stereo adapter like the Radio
Shack 274-0374 (which presumably shorts the tip and center ring) will
work. Also, what size of stereo plug is required?

Also, for the front panel audio headphone output, what kind and size of
plug is required? I'm using a Sennheiser PX 100 stereo headset. If I just
plug it directly into the K2 front panel phone jack will it work?

[Elecraft] K2 connectors

2006-02-09 Thread Stephen W. Kercel

A couple of points from the K2 manual are unclear to me.

The Documentation mentions that if you use an external keyer, you
still need to use a stereo plug, with the keyed line going to the tip
of the plug and the center ring going unused. I was wondering if a
coupling the keyer line to the K2 key jack via a mono-to-stereo

Since the IF is stated to be 28 to 32 MHz, I believe that translates into
a

receive range of 432 to 436 MHz. I recall something being said earlier
about an optional crystal frequency for a different range, but I see
nothing

about that in the XV data sheet.

Since the FCC has few monitors who can copy CW any more, they are pretty
unconcerned how we ID. Thus our procedures change to meet our own needs.
Is someone giving away Maserati's? I'll show upand shout my name too; why
else would I be in the pileup? Properly, this requires a "DE" before the
call, but I only need one of those after ten minutes -- and what the eye
(ear) don't see (hear) the heart (Engineer) won't grieve (miss).

FWIW, while the FCC may have given up on CW, the *FBI* had openings for CW
ops two or three years ago.

[Elecraft] FG Pole for /P Ops

2006-02-09 Thread Mark Adams, PE

Hi Gang,

Check out this photo.

While in Anaheim, CA for a conference in June of 2001, I operated my
Sierra from the 7th floor of a hotel overlooking Disneyland. A balcony
and some bungees worked wonders. It was VHF contest weekend and I was
severely hobbled by not having an FT-817 which I bought when I got back.
The Sierra and TT XVTR worked great, but next to no one down there used CW.

[Elecraft] K2 #5196 For Sale

2006-02-09 Thread Ken K3IU
G'morning Folks:

I find myself having minor withdrawal symptoms. K2 s/n 5196, my 10th, has
been complete for a month of so and I must sell it in order to purchase
another kit to build. This K2 is available with the KSB2, KNB2, K160RX and
any of the following: Basic top, Basic top with KAT2, KIO2, KAF2, KDSP2,
KPA100, and/or KAT100-1.

In the K2/100 configuration, power out is > 100 watts on all bands. On the
Rx side, the MDS is approximately -138 dBm as measured using the Elecraft
XG1. I know of no issues with this K2.

Please contact me directly if you think you might be interested.

Thanks...

[Elecraft] K2 in Kauai--Jackite Pole Experience?

2006-02-09 Thread jmeade
I have had excellent results since last summer with the 28-foot Jackite
pole. It has held up the center of a 40m inverted vee fed with twinlead and
has been tied to many wood decks with bungee cords. It takes only a few
minutes to put up and take down and is much stronger than the SD-20 pole
that I used before this one.

[Elecraft] RE: RANT front end protection

2006-02-09 Thread Charlie, W0YG
The KD9SV front end saver has been mentioned several times with regard to
protecting the RANT or receive antenna input from high signal level inputs
but nobody has mentioned the advantage of this device. It is intended also
as a variable preamp (DXpedition II FES unit at
http://www.radiobooks.com/frontends.htm) for use with antennas that one
would normally use for a separate receive antenna input; i.e. beverage,
loop, pennant, flag etc. This device in particular, and others of this ilk,
are musts to have when one is addicted to the lower bands where separate
receive antennas really shine but where their gain needs a bit of boosting.
I would never be without one on my trips because I just don't want to take a
chance something MIGHT go wrong with that RANT input. For those that
travel, I highly recommend this device.

I just made a trip to VK9XG and VK9CG in October/November last year. My
only radio was a K2/100. It performed admirably, never missing a beat,
however you can bet I had protection devices along. I am sure I worked some
of you folks, K2 to K2.

One other advantage of the front end saver line of products, most key
amplifiers. Now most modern amps do not need an interposing relay but
certainly the older ones, like the Kenwood TL-922 or the Heathkit SB220,
hardly traveling amplifiers, certainly do. The FES I use has such an
interposing relay, more insurance for those that want it and comfort when so
far from home.

Fwd: [Elecraft] Grounding mic connector body on K2 front panel board

2006-02-09 Thread Ted Turk

Dear All,

Having read and thought about this one since building in Feb last year
I 'attacked' the problem over the last two days. A survey with the
left side panel removed showed access was a bit tight and the run to
the grounding loop a bit long. So stripped the front panel right down
to the bare board. There is quite a ground land on the top side of
the PCB around the Mic socket. I acquired a fibreglass pencil from
Maplin and cleaned away a small area of solder resist in the outside
corner triangle of the PCB where "J2" is screen printed. This tinned
easily. An adjacent area of mic socket body was also tinned and then
a short length of stripped thick toroid wire was bent to shape and
soldered in. Another way to shorten the grounding link would be to
use a solder tag to one of the protective short stand-offs next to the
Mic socket.

The K2/100 twin is still working this morning!!

I suppose, if this or a similar mod proves satisfactory, at the next
PCB update, a through-plated hole and small pad could be created in
this corner to provide a more secure attachment?

The original write-up by Wayne N6KR should be somewhere in the

I just did the mod on my K2's in an effort to remove RFI from the
audio. It is
much easier to just remove the left side panel. That gets you enough
access
to the mic connector and the ground loop without the trouble of
pulling the whole
front panel apart. I did not wrap the wire all the way around the
connector, just

soldering it seemed secure enough.

Slight follow-on, the IC-7800 has (from memory) full RX up to 50 MHz or so.
I'm not looking at using terrestrial 70cms at the moment, but no doubt this

With luck I'll have the IC-7000 in a few months, so for simplex 2m / 70cms
this is the easier and (very essential) a portable option.
