RE: [Elecraft] power supply for K2

2006-03-05 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I use the Astron 20M. It's got plenty of current capacity to power the
K2/100 to full output plus some extra for accessories without staining.

Some ops like lots of reserve current and want to be able to power other
rigs that demand more current or more than one rig at a time so they opt for
the much larger Astron 35.

The 20 is rated at 20 amps intermittent commercial service. The K2/100
typically demands about 14 to 18 amps intermittent service (voice peaks or
key down CW at 100 watts output)

These are linear supplies, very quiet electrically but fairly heavy due to
the large power transformer inside. Also, you don't want to put them closer
than about 18 to 24 inches to the rig. Most rigs, actually, because the
strong a-c field can induce hum in the rig.

I run my Astron on a stool under the operating desk. That keeps it away from
the rig and saves space.

Try . DC-Power. I've been doing business with them
 for 6 years.

The owner, Wes Allen, is the repeater guru for the Oregon Tualatin
Valley A.R.C., the largest club in Oregon, (I'm a board member of
that club) and he sells in small wuantities.

I would recommend for starters getting the bag of 10 pairs (10 red,
10 black, 20+ contacts), and definitely the West Mountain crimper.
It's a bit pricey, but I've used several different crimpers and this
one is THE best. The reliability of the connector depends wholly on
the reliability of the crimp, so don't settle for "second-best".

He doesn't have on-line ordering yet, but he is very responsive to
e-mails and phone calls (see the website). If you can't reach him,
it means that he's off at some hamfest somewhere - he exhibits at
most if not all major venues.

 Have fun.

RE: [Elecraft] 40 & 60 meters K2 #5266

2006-03-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
Cary,

You must get the VFO range select voltages within an acceptable range before
you will be able to hear any signals - your 7.95 volts says that the VCO
frequency is out of range (and therefore on the wrong frequency) - first
things first!!!

First make certain you have set D19 = Y in the menu, then adjust L30 to
obtain somewhere between 6 and 7 volts when tuned to 4000 kHz - with the
K60XV installed it may be closer to 7 volts when everythig is adjusted
within range.

After that, if you still have almost 8 volts when the frequency is set to
5300, you have something wrong in the VFO Range Selection area. Check the
capacitor (C71) that you changed to be certain it is 120 pf and check the
soldering of C71, D19 and D20. Check to be certain the orientation of D19
and D20 are correct.

I assume you had readings on R30 that were within range before adding the
K60XV - if that is true, then the problem can be found in the components
that you added to the VFO Range Selection area - C71, D19 and D20.

Once you find the problem, check the ends of each band to be certain the
voltage at R30 is within range at all band edges - if not, re-adjust L30 and
check again.

Don W3FPR

Tom-
I hate to bother you again but I've encountered another glitch. After I
located the problem on 40 meters with your Cheap 'N Dirty Signal tracing
(very effective!), everything aligned perfectly on all bands.
This weekend, I installed the 60 meter and 160 meter mods and when I
powered up my K2 recognized both - that was the good news. The bad news is
I can hear no signals on 40 meters and only hiss on 60 but I am clueless as
to whether there are any signals on that 60 meter band since its so new (all
I hear is a loud hissing and the same on 40 meters).
I hooked up my DMM to R30 and get a steady 7.95 volts (a bit above the
7.5 max in the manual but within 10%...the voltage does not change whether I
am on 7000, 7300, 5300 or 5450it doesn't budge - a steady 7.95 volts
I tried aligning L30 on transmit and can't get above .3 volts on the
power meter (that's "point 3" volts). Aligning L30 on receive is equally as
disappointing - the audio his doesn't vary in intensity at all.
On 160, my receive antennna (R ant) menu is on "off" so that's not an
issue. I hear signals on 160 and the voltages on alignment are 1.85 volts
at 1800 Mhz and 6.85 at 2000 Mhz. I'm fairly confident the 160 mod is not
the problem (but next time I'll install one mod at a time and align before
doing the next! But I did have to take the heat sink off to install both so
it made sense at the time).
I have checked J15 and I have continuity between pins 1 and 3 (that
replaced C-6 which was my original problem with being deaf on 40 meters).
At this point, I'm tempted to remove the 60 meter mode and replace some
RF Board components to put it back to the original state but I hate to throw
in the towel so easily.

  Have you any ideas?

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for March 5th and 6th, 2005

2006-03-05 Thread Kevin Rock
Wheew! What a lot of folks. More than once I was met with an
impenetrable wall of sound. I got the first character of the quickest off
the mark and then caught the folks who sent again. Between the two nets
we did pretty good. In fact we set a new record of 38 total! Not too bad
considering the sun has not been too active lately. Good thing I don't
use those propagation prediction programs to tell me when to get on the
air ;)

I started slowly due to splitting wood for an hour or so before the net.
I also had three bandaids which were not helping me feel the paddles one
bit. When I passed the net to Tom I took them off but my thumb and
forefinger started bleeding again. Working outside in the cold has never
been my hands' favorite activity. I think they are trying to tell me
something. However, after dinner I felt better and they stopped bugging
me so much. The second net was also well attended. QSB was present as
well as QRM and a bit of QRN. Nothing major. Unfortunately we did lose
NX8S before we could get more than a name and a state. Michigan is in one
of my dead zones and Tom could not hear Ted very well either. At first I
could copy a letter here and there but at the end I could barely tell Ted
was there. Sorry, maybe next week will be better.

Thank you for your support. It is most pleasureable to work so many folks
in such a short time. Keeps me on my toes so to speak. Hopefully some of
those folks we tested yesterday at the VE session will get on the air and
work with their new code skills. I hope they use HF early and often so
they find out how much fun we are having. I am sure I told them but it
does not really sink in until you've done it yourself.

   Until next week,

[Elecraft] 40 & 60 meters K2 #5266

2006-03-05 Thread H. Cary III
Tom-
I hate to bother you again but I've encountered another glitch. After I
located the problem on 40 meters with your Cheap 'N Dirty Signal tracing (very
effective!), everything aligned perfectly on all bands.
This weekend, I installed the 60 meter and 160 meter mods and when I powered
up my K2 recognized both - that was the good news. The bad news is I can hear
no signals on 40 meters and only hiss on 60 but I am clueless as to whether
there are any signals on that 60 meter band since its so new (all I hear is a
loud hissing and the same on 40 meters).
I hooked up my DMM to R30 and get a steady 7.95 volts (a bit above the 7.5
max in the manual but within 10%...the voltage does not change whether I am on
7000, 7300, 5300 or 5450it doesn't budge - a steady 7.95 volts
I tried aligning L30 on transmit and can't get above .3 volts on the power
meter (that's "point 3" volts). Aligning L30 on receive is equally as
disappointing - the audio his doesn't vary in intensity at all.
On 160, my receive antennna (R ant) menu is on "off" so that's not an issue.
I hear signals on 160 and the voltages on alignment are 1.85 volts at 1800 Mhz
and 6.85 at 2000 Mhz. I'm fairly confident the 160 mod is not the problem (but
next time I'll install one mod at a time and align before doing the next! But
I did have to take the heat sink off to install both so it made sense at the
time).
I have checked J15 and I have continuity between pins 1 and 3 (that replaced
C-6 which was my original problem with being deaf on 40 meters).
At this point, I'm tempted to remove the 60 meter mode and replace some RF
Board components to put it back to the original state but I hate to throw in
the towel so easily.
   Have you any ideas?

   Cary, K4TM K2 #5266

Ken,

If you cannot find a real crystal socket, you could use an octal tube socket
which may be a bit easier to find.
Should you decide to go the octal socket route, I can likely dig one out of
my 'old stuff' junkbox - just send me your address.

Is it a K2/100? If so did you blow the 20A in-line fuse?

The Hi Cur can appear any time the SWR jumps for some reason. It happened to
me once and I discovered that I had forgotten to tighten an SO-239 connector
after doing some swapping around.

Normally, a QRP K2 will reset itself (it uses a resettable fuse).

RE: [Elecraft] K2 receive audio harmonic distortion

2006-03-05 Thread K. Rice

Thanks Sverre, Mike and Don.

Doh!

After cutting the PC's software gain control to near-minimum, it does
appear that most if not all of the odd-harmonic distortion was due
to overdriving the soundcard. To make certain, I will repeat the
experiment on a USB sound card that has bona fide line inputs and
better dynamic range, but I expect to find that the K2's audio
is just fine.

Thanks again for putting the experiment right.

I just noticed that everytime I turn the KX1 on, it come up on 14040.0

If anyone sees this before 20M ECN, listen for a very weak one ... I'll

RE: [Elecraft] Strange Problem

2006-03-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
Charlie,

Don't do that reset!!!

The K2 does that if you do not wait long enough at the new frequency.
So tune it up to 14.035 again and wait at least 30 seconds (or a full
minute) before changing bands or turning power off.

It has always been there - you just didn't notice before.

RE: [Elecraft] KPA100 T-R switch

2006-03-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
Gil,

The power handling capability is limited by the reverse bias voltage applied
to the switch, which is about 120 volts under load - so the power limit as
implemented in the KPA100 is only about 120 watts.

You would need a bias voltage in the neighborhood of 300 volts to handle 400
watts, and the switching MOSFETs must also be capable of handling that
voltage.

Did you try to wait > 30 seconds before you turn it off?

The manual says:

"Backup Timer

While you're moving the VFO, a 30-second data backup timer is
being continuously re-started. Once you have completely stopped
tuning the VFO for at least 30 seconds, the K2 will then save your
current operating frequency in EEPROM. As long as you stay on a
particular frequency, no further updates will be done."

RE: [Elecraft] K2 receive audio harmonic distortion

2006-03-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ken,

I do not believe that harmonic distortion is coming from the K2 - that
pattern looks like a soundcard overdriven condition to me.

When you reduce the AF Gain at the K2, you reduce the input to the sound
card, and at some point, the soundcard no longer distorts.

Use the PC soundcard mixer controls to reduce the gain settings on your
soundcard (mic or line-in, whichever you are using, and the master volume)
to somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 of the max settings (if you are using the
mic input, you may have to go as low as 1/4 or less), then bring up the gain
on the K2 to produce a reasonable size display, As others have noted, -30
dB is probably as high as you can go before the soundcard distorts.

RE: [Elecraft] Magnetic shielding Kit for T5 (K2)

2006-03-05 Thread Don Wilhelm
Yes, you will have to lower the voltage.

It is difficult to see if you are moving the turns of T5 in the correct
direction if you observe the 7.9 volt point because that is the maximum
voltage that you are likely to see (it is almost 8 volts and the driving
opamp is being driven to the high voltage rail.

All the voltages will reduce during the process of getting the 4000kHz point
to tune with 7.5 volts or less. Tune downward to a frequency that gives you
a voltage less than the 7.9 volts, and then manipulate the turns of T5 to
reduce that voltage by about half a volt - then recheck the voltage at 4000
kHz - repeat as required. When you have the 4000 kHz point in range, check
all the other band edges to be certain they are also in range.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 T-R switch

It is pretty marginal at 100 watts. Calculate the *peak* voltage of a 100
watt carrier into a 50 ohm load (about a hundred volts .. more if the load
impedance is higher than 50 ohms) to get an idea of the voltage that the
switch must handle. Then look at the bias voltage for the TR switch (I
forgot .. about 120volts or so I think).

Just a few questions to understand your measurement: How did you feed the
signal into your PC for analysis, using a microphone or from e.g. the
headphone output?

In my experience, it is very easy to overload the sound card in the PC. The
result is the same kind of distortion that your plot shows. A simple check
is to try to adjust the PC input level (software controlled slider) and see
if that changes the distortion.

[Elecraft] K2 receive audio harmonic distortion

2006-03-05 Thread K. Rice

I have been thinking that the receive audio from my K2 (#4314) was just
OK, especially on CW when compared to other rigs including a Drake R8
and a K1. It's not terrible by any means, just not as good as it might
be.

Today I fed an S9 CW signal into Spectrogram and find that its third audio
harmonic is down approximately 10 dB from the fundamental. The 5th,
7th, 9th, are down about 4 db sucessively from the next-lower odd
harmonic.

This is easier to see than to say:

   http://world.std.com/~rice/k2_harmonic_distortion_05.jpg

This is observed when driving headphones or speaker to a comfortable
listening level (red trace on the spectrogram above). Decreasing
the RF or AF gain so that the audio level decreases ~30 dB (blue trace on
the spectrogram) eliminates the problem, but the signal is then too
faint to copy effectively.

The vertical red line is the center frquency of the widest CW filter
(1.2 kHz) set per N0SS's instructions.

AGC on/off and DSP on/off make no difference. It seems to be pretty
far downstream in the audio chain.

Sidetone audio behaves the same - no worse.

Is this level of harmonic distortion normal? If not, what should I
look for to correct it?

Thanks and 73,

Ken Rice

[Elecraft] Fw: K2, MD-2 MIC AND MFJ-434 VOICE KEYER

2006-03-05 Thread Andrew Catanzaro

Subject: K2, MD-2 MIC AND MFJ-434 VOICE KEYER

Since my "big rig" is a Japan Radio JST-245 and it has a Yaesu microphone
pinout,
I set the jumpers in the K2 for a Yaesu mike. My Heil Goldline works fine
with the
K2 and puts out excellent fidelity. When I started using the Elecraft MH-2
and

Heil boom mikes for the K2, I wired those also for Yaesu and there was no
problem. The Goldline's HC-5 element had greater fidelity and definition
than
the latter two mikes, but they had greater output and drove the K2 to full
output.

Adding the MFJ 434 keyer was no problem. I set the jumpers for Yaesu and
it took right off. It's audio fidelity is a reflection of the audio you
feed it with,
and its utility is great. You need to be careful about setting the record
gain,

as it easy to pick up background noise if it's set too high.

BTW, when wiring up the K2 for electret mikes, put the 5.7k dropping
resistor in

the microphone *plug* and not in the K2. That way you can switch between
dynamic and electret mikes and never worry about a DC volatege appearing
across

a dynamic element.

Another note, in response to the recent posts aobut the K2 not being a good
SSB rig on transmit, I have received many unsolicited reports of good audio
with all three of the above mikes. That was with a 2 KHz audio bandwidth.
The K2 was designed for communications power not for high fidelity
entertainement. Most of the audio reports have come from DX stations.
I have more recently opened up the bandwidth to 2.2 kHz and, obviously,
the good audio reports continue to come in. For those who want to
sound like the nighttime announcers on broacast AM stations, buy
the Japanese radios with the wide bandwidth and parametric equalizers,
but I think that's a different hobby from the one I participate in.
The guys from Peter I didn't seem to mind my SSB audio on the
three different bands I contacted them on, and after only a couple calls
each. That's communicating!

Is anybody using the K2 with the MD-2 mic and the MFJ-434 Voice
Keyer, please?

I borrowed an MFJ-434 Voice Keyer for the weekend to help my wife
June (M0BUE) play in the ARRL DX SSB Contest as W4/M0BUE, but cannot
get it to work with the K2 and MD-2. I have tried changing the
various jumpers inside the keyer but that doesn't seem make any
difference.

Does anybody know which of the three options (Yaesu, Kenwood or Icom)
of the voice keyer I should use with the K2?

Could the problem be anything to do with the way the MD-2 mic plug is
wired, perhaps not being compatible with the mic socket on the keyer?

Any help and suggestions will be appreciated by June.

Thanks and 73 de Chris, G4BUE (currently N4CJ in Florida)

Re: [Elecraft] K0BRA Active Antennas AMRAD

2006-03-05 Thread Don

Why not be interested? It is an interesting project.

I built the active antenna two years ago, not for use with VLF but as an
antenna to use with old broadcast AM radio receivers. I had found that my
old Philco, which was designed to use a random wire antenna, picked up more
hum than than anything else and I needed to place an effective antenna well
above the electric fields existing in my living room and then bring the
signal down to the radio through coax where I could then use a conventional
step up transformer to match the antenna input of the receiver. There are
probably easier ways to make the old Philco perform but I was interested in
the concept of using a short whip, remote amplifier, and coax to suck
signals out of the air. Anyway, it worked well. I found that it was
effective up to about 7 MHz although performance fell off gradually about 4
MHz.

The special power transformer (wound with very low capacitance between
primary and secondary) may be a cost issue. I made my own by stripping the
secondary off a cheap RS transformer and adding a new secondary with a *lot*
of insulation between the two windings to reduce the capacitance to very
near that reported in the qst article for the purchased version of the
transformer.

Well after all of the variations of URLs and browsers, I finally clicked
on the Active LF Antenna article and was told "You are forbidden access to
this pageI guess I'm not interested after all :-( K4TO

Hi,

I have a similiar problem when switching between an
IC-746PRO and K2. What I've found is I have to shut
down HRD when switching and restart it. When it
starts chose the radio you want to use it with. I'v
not been able to just switch radios at will.

Any ideas? Do others have this problem with the K1?

[Elecraft] Qso party rules?

2006-03-05 Thread Rolf Moberg

Hello!

A couple of questions regarding to next weekend Elecraft qso party.

Scoring:

An imaginary qso between OH6KXL and N3DRK would give 5 points? Right?
or
Would it be total of 9 points (5 for s/n and 4 for different continent)

And multipliers:
rules say:
"S/P/C total for all bands and modes."

Does it mean when working OH6KXL-N3DRK in 40m cw and ssb and 20 cw and
ssb I could achieve total of 4 multipliers?

Point well taken, Scott. Certainly the discussion here has raised my awareness
of the issue of switch isolation, and I'll do something different (other than
relying on a single MFJ switch) to protect my radios.
