May I second Wayne's suggestion. In practice I have found that it is very
useful to be able to select roofing filters having different bandwidths, at
the moment down to 1.5 kHz, with good stopband attenuation. In spite of the
protection offered by *narrow* roofing filters, I believe that it is wise
to

have all the stages before the second IF filter(s) capable of handling
strong signals, i.e. IIP3s of +40dbm or better, to reduce the crud
generated by those unwanted signals that are very close in and get through
a

narrow bandwidth roofing filter. One price is high current draw which is
probably not acceptable if the rig is to be used portable. The phase noise
of the LOs must also be suitably low to avoid compromising dynamic range
etc. Lastly the filters themselves must also be capable of handling strong
signals.

Could the SSB filter on the SSB Option board be made into a variable-passband

Re: [Elecraft] 60 foot fiberglass pole

2006-08-09 Thread Ken Alexander
Awesome! At a hundred and sixty something Euros it's
not that much more than what you'd pay for other
smaller masts. My experience with my former MFJ mast,
which snapped early in its short life, was that the
top one or two sections weren't that useful for
supporting a wire. But with a 60 ft mast you wouldn't
care if you couldn't use a section or two!

Does anyone here own one of these yet?

RE: [Elecraft] Fw: Canadian Postage Rate Increases

2006-08-09 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Well, the British radio stations are full of ads from the Royal Postal
Service about new rates beginning this month that include charging for size
as well as weight (we've been doing that here in the colonies for as long as
I can remember). And even so, recently I saw reference to the fact that when
Benjamin Franklin was US Postmaster General in the late 1700's, the US Mails
got a letter from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. faster than the US Mails
do today.

Maybe that's okay because today we use the internet for fast written
communications.

After half a century of conscientious QSLing, nowadays I only reply to
requests unless it's a particularly memorable contact. After all, the cost
of about 5 domestic QSLs = a US Gallon of gasoline . Not sure how they
compare in terms of greenhouse emissions though. The gasoline might be
cleaner!

occurs early in the new year, if not on January 1st
...sigh!

I would not expect many VEs would squabble about
receiving U.S. postage in lieu of Canadian stamps for
return postage for a QSL.

It currently costs Cdn $0.89 to send a letter (less
than 30 grams) to the U.S.

http://www.canadapost.ca/business/rates/2006/coming-e.asp?sblid=coming

If any U.S. hams would like to purchase Canadian
stamps to use as return postage from Canada you can
send me a self-addressed envelope and funds for the
number of stamps you would like to buy. I'll get them
for you, use one of the stamps on your return envelope
and mail the rest to you. My address on qrz.com is

Offer applies to DX hams, but letter rates for
overseas mail are $1.49.

[Elecraft] Fw: Canadian Postage Rate Increases

2006-08-09 Thread Stephen Brandt

To Whom This May Concern,

It appears that Canadian postage rates will go up next year. Don't be too
surprised if U.S. rates also go up in the next year or so. It would be nice if
they would be nice if we had even values like $0.35, $0.40 etc. Would be
easier for the vending machines.

Many Canadians will take U.S. postage and use them for their own self
addressed stamped envelopes that they send to us. Just put the stamp loose in
the envelope and don't stick it on the self addressed envelope that you send
them. Or at least this has worked for me.

[Elecraft] Using a KAT100 without a KIO2

2006-08-09 Thread wayne burdick
Bob Solosko, W1SRB, reminded us that some K2 owners might wish to use a
KAT100 without needing to buy a KIO2. This is especially likely if you
plan to buy a KPA100 later, since it has the equivalent of the KIO2
built in.

Bob built his own simple K2 to KIO2 control cable and sent us the
schematic. You can find it on our Builder Resources page. The link to
his document is:

Keep in mind that this is an international list, and that isn't
necessarily the case.
The UK has different and explicit rules, for example.
Does Canada have an explicit rule?

And the FCC has NO rule, so, in their jurisdiction, you can do as you
wish.

In fact, since the DXCC rules require the station to be completely
ashore, if DXCC is an issue, it's less confusing if you were to use
/MM anytime you're on a boat, even moored to a quay.

Signing "/MM" or "Maritime Mobile" ... or "Aeronautical

the 12 mile limit. In the cases above "/M" or "Mobile" is

RE: [Elecraft] Alaska - Cruise

2006-08-09 Thread Craig Rairdin
You also need to have an International Amateur Radio Permit. You get it from
the ARRL. Make sure you allow plenty of time to receive it. They get snippy
if you ask for it in less than two or three weeks. It costs a few dollars to
cover postage. You have to send a picture, like for a passport. It's all
spelled out at http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/regulations/io/iarp-app.pdf

I found myself in Vancouver on Field Day weekend and received a warm welcome
from the local hams when I showed up at midnight Saturday. Unfortunately
there wasn't a key or paddle in sight, but I did work some 40M phone. Nobody
asked for my IARP. :-)

RE: [Elecraft] IF Shift vs. Passband Tuning?

2006-08-09 Thread jmeade
The first time I saw the term "passband tuning" was on the Collins 75A4
receiver. It shifted the BFO in one direction and the main PTO in the other
direction. The two were linked together with a mechanical strap. The idea
was that the pitch of the received signal would not change nor would the
actual selectivity bandwidth. It was useful in both CW and SSB. The
background pitch changed, but not the tone of the signal being received.

Then the Drake receivers came along, and did the same thing with the
variable L/C filters in the 50kHz IF. A different approach, but the effect
was the same. The passband could be adjusted from one side of zero beat to
the other.

I thought that PBT a great feature. Then I got a Kenwood TS-930S which had
"VBT" - "Variable Bandwidth Tuning". This feature allowed for the
adjustment of the difference between two edges of two filters - like opening
and closing a sliding door - the "gap" could be adjusted wider or narrower,
thus changing the selectivity. The center frequency does not change. You
get continuously-variable selectivity this way and can respond to any band
condition easily. Now I am used to that feature and miss it on other rigs

RE: [Elecraft] KIO2 is it to expensive ? / Was KIO2 For S/N 0539

2006-08-09 Thread Solosko, Robert B (Bob)
Martin,

I agree that the KIO2 is a very expensive option if you want to use a
KAT100 but don't need the serial computer interface (or if you plan to add a
KPA100, as I will eventually do). However, for about $5 in parts, I put
together a KIO2 alternative to control my KAT100 - it has the KAT100 control
signals but not the RS-232 interface. All of the information needed to do this
can be extracted from the KIO2 schematic.

Hello Mark,

Yes you are right the KIO2 is another Elecraft quality kit !

Please don't get me wrong for what I'm gonna write : I love my K2 !

BUT I have the feeling it is also the most overpriced extension that you
can purchase for your K2. I have a full loaded K2 (KDSP2, KAT2, KNB2,
KSB2, K160M) and KPA100+KAT100 in a EC2 enclosure. At $89 I really have
the feeling that it is twice to expensive considering what you get. Also
you MUST have it four a couple of option like the KAT100 or the
transverter. As it is the only "proper" way to get Auxbus signals out of
the K2 I really think it should have been included into the basic K2.
I'm not aware of what the R&D cost for this option where but I feel that
the price should be around $35 to $45 ...

Maybe we will have the luck to get it on the K3 :)

Re: [Elecraft] A Good Day With The KX1

2006-08-09 Thread Dan KB6NU

I had a great long weekend with my KX-1.

I took it up to Elk Lake, MI, where my family rents a set of cabins
every summer. I pulled a wire up into a tree, laid out three radials,
and went to town. I worked about 20 stations in the North America QSO
Party and had a couple of nice ragchews over the 3-1/2 days I was up
there.

My operating position couldn't have been my nicer. I was on the
screened-in porch of one of the cabins, looking out over the lake,
with a nice, cool breeze flowing as I was operating. You just can't
beat summers in northern Michigan. :)

(snip of excellent discussion)

I agree with all that, but would add a bit more:

*All* rig designs are compromises/tradeoffs - just different ones.

Besides the above criteria, Elecraft designs focus on low power requirement,
low complexity, minimal use of custom parts, user constructability and
serviceability, and small size/weight without going all surface mount.

Many other designs, including some considered "portable", accept massive
increases in complexity, power requirement, and use of special parts to achieve
their design goals. User serviceability is usually minimal - beyond a certain
very basic point, you either have to be a skilled technician with lots of test
gear, or you send the rig to one.

That's not to say either approach is "right" or "wrong", just that they
accept very different tradeoffs.

Fellow Elecrafters,

I just completed building and installing the KIO2 in K2 S/N 0539. WOW!
Nice accessory kit. It would have been a single evening kit if it were not
for other obligations. Two nights to get it assembled, tested, and
installed? Not bad. I was very pleased to see the display on Ham Radio
Deluxe change as I rotated the VFO dial and changed bands. I know this is
going to be an excellent accessory for my K2.

This included the MPU v2.04 upgrade.

It looks like Elecraft makes another quality kit.
