RE: [Elecraft] Attic Antenna

2006-10-28 Thread g4ilo
I'm surprised with all this talk of dipoles and doublets that no-one has
mentioned loops. I'm not an antenna expert, but it has always seemed to me
that the efficiency of an antenna is somewhat related to the amount of wire
in the radiating element.

You can get more wire in a loop round the periphery of an attic than you
will get in a dipole strung in the apex of it. It may not give a 50 ohm
match, but nor will the dipole except at one frequency. If you feed it with
ladder line and a balun, or a very short length of co-ax, feeder losses
will be kept to a minimum. That's what I use.

I agree with your sentiment. My 'doublet' was nearly a loop, ie it followed

[Elecraft] re attic antennas and ground radials

2006-10-28 Thread Richard haendel
From the previous discussions, I agree that there is no magic in having low
VSWR across many bands without a tuner or a resistor buried in the
matching unit. However there is a way to have good vertically polarized
radiation without ground radials. One example of these is the end-fed 1/2
wavelength vertical. If you wish to build one for a single band, there are
several articles compiled within the archives of QST or you can buy one from
PAR electronics. The cost is less than $60 for the 40 Meter unit and the
cost is even lower for the higher band units. For reviews see e-ham at
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/3632 .

The single band version can handle 100 watts. The multiband version is only
QRP rated at 20 watts. Re the antenna arrangement, it doesn't have to be
perfectly straight nor perfectly vertical to work well. Of course the
pattern will change. The matching is nothing more than a tuned circuit plus
a coupling loop, no resistors !!. All 1/2 wave end fed antennas work quite
well either purchased or home made. Good luck on building your own.!!

[Elecraft] OT-NASA

2006-10-28 Thread Jeremiah McCarthy
I was not NASA certified but worked with techs that were. They explained that
minimum solder, ie concave verses convex solder blob, was due to not
inspection of solder pad. If the solder was piled on the inspectors would
reject it because they had a harder time determining cold solder pads,
minimal solder allowed proper inspection of the pad.

I was NASA certified and weight was the prime consideration...Most of our
soldering involved high pin density cable connectors...Everything was inspected
twice, first by our own QC, then by NASA...They did not want to see a filet at
the solder cups of the connector pins, they wanted to see a void, with the wire
little more than tacked into the cup...They did a pull test on every wire...No
wicking or bird-caging of the stranded wire was allowed...All flux had to be
removed and many connectors were crabbed due to the presence of flux...

We did not do an lot of circuit boards, but minimum solder was still the
rule...Circuit board technology in the late 60's was rather primitive by
today's standards and most of our boards were fabricated in house in the photo
lab...There weren't many moon-shots, so board manufacture count was low...

RE: [Elecraft] Z range KAT2 ?

2006-10-28 Thread Don Wilhelm
Peter,

The Impedance range that the KAT2 will match will be greater on the higher
bands than the lower (just because of the math in the formulas for impedance
of inductors and capacitors). So I hesitate to guess at an answer becuase
you did not specify a frequency - I can add up the inductor and capacitor
values and give a range for each.

With a bit of work with a program like TLW (www.arrl.org), one could
determine the impedance range for each band. It is an L network tuner with
a series inductor range from 0 to 20.62 uH in 0.16 uH steps; while the shunt
capacitor can range in value from 0 to 2423 pf in 10 to 12 pf steps. The
shunt capacitor can be at either end of the inductor. Only the min and max
values need to be entered for each component and configuration, so there
would be 8 calculations for each band of interest.

All in all, it is a wide impedance range, but will be more restricted on 160
meters than on 10 meters. This same principle applies to all Elecraft
tuners and to other manufacturers of similar L network designs.

claim a LDG refund or repair.

BTW, and a bit OT, I presume an external KAT 100 fits 100 W continuous.
Could the KAT100 withstand 250 W SSB( speech SSB only, no CW no FM ) , if my

If so, I'll get rid of the LDG and buy me a KAT100.

[Elecraft] K2 #4150 lives!

2006-10-28 Thread David Lankshear
After building my K2 #5551, a very busy friend allowed me to build his, #4150.

This had started life as a much earlier K2 for which he'd obtained upgrades, a
new serial number and a set of pre-wound toroids to bring it up to the latest
specification but unfortunately, due to time constraints, he'd had little
opportunity to organise and get down to its construction.

Problems encountered were:
1. No BFO signal at TP2 caused by fitting a 2N7000 instead of a J310 at Q24.
(Doh!)
2. The BFO range didn't go down low enough to achieve the recommended CAL FIL
settings. Gary advised fitting a 1 to 4pF capacitor between ground (X3/X4
grounding points and junction of X3/X4 and L33. With the K2 upside down, front
panel towards you, it's the lead at the right hand side of L33). A 1.8pF
capacitor reduced the BFO's lowest frequency while not affecting its upper
frequency.
3. The frequency counter probe came apart and when it was repaired the series
10pF capacitor was forgotten, leading to some crazy, unstable readings (thanks
for the reminder, Gary).
4. Excess current (3A) being drawn on 40m tuneup. L1 adjustment having little
effect. All other bands tuned up just fine. This was traced to L25/L26 having
been supplied with 16 turns each, rather than the specified 14 and 12,
respectively. Everything tuned perfectly after correcting the number of turns.
Moral - double-check others' work as well as your own!

All in all, another super little rig, the building of which has given me
enormous pleasure. Thanks Elecraft for a truly superb kit (that even an eejit
like me can get right - twice!), thanks to my friend for trusting me to build
it for him and a very special thanks to Gary AB7MY for super support.

Now, how to get another K2 to build? Unfortunately, it's impossible to put one
over on the domestic supervisor HI!

It's not as simple as that. The impedance may be more or less reactive,
and the reactance can be either capacitive or inductive. I would expect
that tuners of different design might work better or worse with
particular combinations of resistance and reactance.

Keep in mind that the KAT100 requires a K2. So if your 250 watts comes
from a QRP K2 plus amplifier, it would work. But if you're planning to
use a different transceiver, it would not.

I believe that the KAT100 is exactly the same as the KAT2 in terms of
network values and algorithms; so if your KAT2 matches everything so
should the KAT100!

Great fun to work at this moment US on 14 MHz with only 10 W bare K2 SSB

I wonder how my bare K2 could be heard in US between all those big EU 1KW

My K2 Rx performs great in this contest mess..just miss the IF shift...and
tweaking the K2 filters against bfo to mimic IF shift is kinda tedious.

[Elecraft] Attic Ant.-Closed Loop vs. Open Ends?

2006-10-28 Thread Jeff
David, G3UNA, wrote:

I have some questions for the group. How would one decide whether the ends
should be left open, versus connected together to make a loop? (I never
could figure out how to model antennas using EZNEC. It should be called
HARDNEC.) Does it make a lot of difference? Using a tuner near the
feedpoint, which way would give a better match on more bands (160-10m), open
or closed ends? Which way would yield stronger signals in the most
directions? Is it the case that, below a certain total wire length, the
ends should be left open, but above that length, they should be connected
together? I guess the only way an indoor antenna of typical length would
match on 160m, even with a tuner, would be if the ends were connected
together and the whole thing was treated as a very bent end-fed wire working
against ground and a counterpoise.

In case anyone is considering which autotuner to buy, my results are similar

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2006-10-28 Thread Kevin Rock

Good Evening,
The house is cozy warm -- both Sam and I are fed and happy. The
critters are staying outside these days and they seem to enjoy it too.
I've been hearing a deer bound into the woods as I leave the house after
dark several days this week. She does not go far because I don't seem to
frighten her much. The lawn is the only grass for many miles and she
likes a change in diet now that the fir needles are stiff with late season
age. A few nights ago I was serenaded by an owl - elk duet. Interesting
mixture of tones. The owl was carrying the bass line while adding
percussive effects. I wonder what they were talking about?
A few nights ago 40 meters was very, very quiet; much like 80 meters
gets an hour before dawn. Twenty meters has been supporting comms each
morning so my friend in Oklahoma and I can chat about the weather and
construction projects. Speaking of building I came close but have not
finished the drywall work. My nephew was too busy to come help with the
last few ceiling pieces but I did get the taping and mudding done on all
the rest. A few more days and I'll be done.
I did take a couple of days off from the dust to volunteer for an ARES
exercise, travel into town for legal matters, and study a number of
subjects. I am getting closer to understanding an open source compiler
with multiple front ends and multiple back ends. This will help me get a
few neural network ideas I've been mulling over into a microcontroller.
I'll need to use scaled arithmetic instead of floating point but the slide
rule discussions on QRP-L have reminded me of my time remembering where
the decimal point goes after a long string of calculations.
If I have adjusted Mickey's hands properly I may have the correct Zulu
time listed below. Remember: the local time stays the same while the UTC
changes. This is to keep my feeding time set in stone. I shoveled out
the kitchen after renovating the squirrel ravaged insulation. I awarded
myself by cleaning the counters and getting my oven in working order. It
made me dinner quite handily. I think it did a very good job at creating
a golden brown crust of Parmesan cheese over the casserole while I was out
burning all the trash I have generated.

[Elecraft] N1MM Contest Logger VFO B issue

2006-10-28 Thread KT5X
Yes, I noticed the same problem (and more) last summer with VFO B. Maybe it is
fixed in a newer edition, dunno.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement Errata

2006-10-28 Thread Kevin Rock
After having been privately disabused of the notion of 2400z I will amend
my net announcement to read:

 Please join us:
Sunday 2359z and 59 seconds (Sunday 3:59:59 PM PST) 14050 kHz
Monday 0300z (Sunday 7 PM PST) 7045 kHz

That way I stay within the letter of the law and keep the twenty meter net
in Sunday. Big Ben should be on the downstroke of the first chime when we
get underway.

Also: at the end of each net I send QNF. Since we have gathered together
I am hoping others will keep going after I rush off to make dinner. Free
nets are to use for your own devices. I'll be gone within seconds but you
all can keep at it until the chickens awaken the next morning if you so
desire.

   Until tomorrow,
  Kevin. KD5ONS

[Elecraft] Turn-On Help

2006-10-28 Thread William M. Spaulding, SR
My turn-on tests are all fixed now that I used my Hakko to get U3 in the proper
orientation. I'm not supposed to make mistakes like that

Thanks,

Bill

Re: [Elecraft] Attic Ant.-Closed Loop vs. Open Ends?

2006-10-28 Thread Larry

I agree with you. I cannot figure out Eznec Could be my brain doesn't
work the same way as the creator.

...(I never[WJ] could figure out how to model antennas using EZNEC. It
should be called[WJ] HARDNEC.) Does it make a lot of difference? [WJ] ...

I had the same problem until I went to the HELP menu. Under HELP there
are three tutorials. If you go through each one then you get a good
feel on how the program works.
