I guess it is not so much the "yellow/orange" display on the yaseu's - as it is the formating, and lack of technical information that yaseu seems to design with. Re: [Elecraft] Made my first contacts on my K2
Matthew, Those symptoms are classic for behavior of an unsoldered or poorly soldered conection. The connection changes to a poor connection when it is warmed slightly. You may be able to narrow it down by tapping on some of the components. Take a look at the S-meter while receiving a steady signal (WWV may be a good choice) to see whether there is a change in the S-meter response when the audio volume decreases. If it does, the problem is in the early stages of the receiver (IF amplifier and toward the antenna), but if the S-meter does not drop, the problem is at the product detector or other stages toward the audio section. It also could be the AGC itself that is causing the problem. Again, the S-meter is an indicator - if the S-meter increases when the audio drops, then the problem is with the AGC. If you find problems with the AGC or the audio itself, check the control board, and perhaps even reflow the soldering with an iron temperature of 700 to 750 degrees. If the problem is with the front end of the receiver (antenna to IF amplifier), then look carefully at the RF board. Sorry, but in cases like this, I cannot be more specific until you can provide more data. 73, Don W3FPR Matthew Denson wrote: Hi All, Building the K2 was a lot of fun, and now my basic K2 (#6210) is on the air. Re: [Elecraft] K1 transmitter problem...any help appreciated.
Hi Tom, Thanks for the reply.I will answer each question below:- - Original Message - From: "Tom Arntzen" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Hi Ron! The TR1/BPF will have 1/3-1/2 level of BUF. After looking on the schematics I would like you to check following points. My measuremens show about 1/3 the level between in/out Measure DC-voltage collector Driver Q6. If missing check both sides of RFC5. Voltages OK @12v. Also take a close look at T3 , high currents can go through T3 if Q7 is fried the right/wrong way. T3 appeared OK but I rewound that as well when I replaced the driver.( yes I double checked since) Also make DC measures to TR-switch D10 and D9 and see that D10 is closed during TX. Yes D10 is biased "on" during receive and "off" during Transmit ( by way of the 6R/aux and 6R_2 voltages being applied in receive and removed during Tx.) Also verify that D9 does it's job ok. D9 is turned on OK by the 6T voltage during transmit. You may want to swap out or check r31 and r32. They are in the "dangerzone" during PA failure. Both R31 and R32 have been lifed one end and each verified OK. I really can't see any points in path where the signal could get lost between BUF and TR1 other than normal loss. Nor can I !! I guess you can hear your K1 on the right frequencies on another rx when sending , and the rx is OK. Yes receive is fine and in the right place If so the problem is still in the PA or D9-D10. D9 and D10 have been replaced...so has Q6 and Q7 ...the same manufacturer and part numbers. Hope you get on the air with your K1 soon. Yes ...so do I. I have even tried "bush practices" like disconnecting Q7 and lifting terminal 3 of T3 and using the old trick of connecting a very low wattage torch bulb from the removed lead to ground to see if there is drivethere wasn't enough to even get a glimmer. Thanks for the suggestions Tom, but I think I have those covered. Tom LA1PHA K1 1491 Cheers..Ron ZL1TW K1 #575 - Original Message - From: "Ron" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" Sent: Monday, August 20, 2007 2:18 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K1 transmitter problem...any help appreciated. Hi Guys, As a last resort I am appealing to the "Elecraft collective" to see if I can get help with this problem. I have a K1 that has been going great for years , but during a band filter change it was fired up without the ATU replaced and it fried the output transistor and D19.(also damaged T4 which has been re-woundand double checked since) I replaced both the output transistor and D19 and it "sort of " went for a while then decided to die on transmit completely. I replaced the driver.no change... Then I started looking with my very limited quality "scope". I appear to be getting drive through the Transmit mixer OK, and the buffer stage appears to giving me a 10x increase in drive level. The signal looks OK until I get to point "TR1" at the junctions of D5 and D14 where it goes into the BPF. There is not much drive appearing at point "TR2" certainly not enough to get the driver excited enough to work This problem is common to each band on two different 2 x Band boards, so I have to presume they are OK. Because the level drops at point "BPF" on the cct diagram, I immediately thought there was a problem in the T-R switching circuit. The diodes tested OK , but to make sure I removed all diodes and they did indeed test fine, so did the resistances associated with them. Q4 appeared to be doing it's job OK but I swapped it out for a new onereplaced all the diodes. OP1 still showed on transmitnothing on the power meter. I then decided it might be a lack of drive earlier on so replaced Q5 ...still no changefrom memory there was about 6v being applied to the Drain of Q5 from the MCU. I might be wrong, but I expected to see about the same outputs from the Mixer/Osc chips U7 and U8.they are pretty much the same. The set receives just fine...another reason not to suspect the BPF's. If I listen to the weak signal that *is* produced, I can peak all the filters on it while listening to the signal on another receiver. So...where does one look from here? What is a very basic transmitter circuit has me bluffed at present...luckily I have little hair left to pull out. Any Ideas??? Re: [Elecraft] K2 PLL Reference Oscillator failure
Will, The information I have so far is that: 1) You obtained a good frequency reading from TP2 during the BFO range test (which says your counter probe is probably working). 2) You do not have a good frequency reading at TP3 for the PLL Range test - and your results usually indicate that the PLL reference oscillator is not oscillating. There *is* an off chance that the counter probe is working fine at the lower BFO frequency, but not at the higher PLL frequency. If you have access to an external frequency counter, you can check the frequency at TP3 with that meter as a double check. Forget the thermistor board for a while - it may be a problem, but even if it has a problem, it will not cause the reference oscillator to cease oscillation. Check L33 and the crystal leads for good soldering. Be certain D18 and Q19 are oriented correctly and well soldered. Check the varactors D16 and D17 for proper orientation, proper types (D16 large and D17 smaller) and good soldering. Measure the resistance from Q19 source to ground - if it is much larger than 270 ohms, check the lead tinning on RFC14 (remove it and re-tin the leads), and check R21, C84, and C85 for correct values as well as good soldering. If all that above is correct, you should find a frequency near 12100 MHz at TP3 - in fact if you find a frequency anywhere between 11,900 and 12,200, at least the PLL reference is oscillating, but if the range test is not within the correct range, you have another problem to be discovered. 73, Don W3FPR [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all, I'm part way done building #6197, arriving at the Alignment and Test, Part II of the RF aasembly on page 63 (Rev G of the K2 manual). At step 3, I plug-in the probe as described and enter CAL FCTR to enable the on-board counter. I'm getting a reading of 189.52, rapidly changing by around +/- 0.30. This doesn't look anything at all like what I should be expecting according to step 3. I have pulled the assembly apart, retraced parts placement and connections, and aside from correcting RFC14's winding (just one turn of wire too many), I've not gotten any change in counter reading. I also re-did the thermistor board just in case, as it was sitting a bit askew and almost making contact with RFC14's toroid core. Power up and test yielded the same result. All else up to this point, including the 4MHz calibration (using a Sony IC-SW7600G for zero-beat), checks out fine. Also, as posted in a very recent message referring to a PLL range test filaure, I have checked RP2, D16, D17 and R19 for proper values and orientation, as well as for cold solder joints. The silver lining in all of this is that I did try the first few steps of the BFO test on page 65 and that turned out perfect. Otherwise, I'm pretty much stuck at this point as to where to go from here. Any pointers appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] KSB2 No Transmit Audio
Mark, The path through Q1 is only used in CW mode to make the path from the BFO to the Transmit Mixer (on the RF Board) complete - that circuitry replaces C167 which you removed from the RF board. For SSB, the Balanced modulator signal goes 'backwards' through the filter and is applied to Q2 where it should find its way back to the RF board and on to the transmit mixer. Be certain the TXC signal is operating correctly - it should be near 6 volts during CW transmit and near zero during SSB transmit. If you need more detailed info, please ask. I do not know of a document with that level of detail other than the schematic. 73, Don W3FPR Beth Wenzel wrote: Hi guys, i built my k2 about a year and a half ago, I've recently decided to add a Ksb2, all wen together well, but... alas it doesn't work. Re: [Elecraft] Delay between key in, key out on XV
John, The 8R signal is asserted about 15 ms before the onset of RF - that may be OK for a fast sequencer, but is not for slow switchovers. I have developed a circuit which will interrupt the K2 paddle inputs and the PTT input until a signal is received to indicate "OK to transmit now". You can find the circuit on my website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com - check the article related to CW PTT for the K2. It works for both CW and SSB. To use my circuit, you will need some input (pushbutton, foot-switch, etc) to start your sequencing steps, and the input to my circuit should be a final output from the sequencer. I know of at least 2 VHF folks and 1 SO2R operator have used it with success, there may be more. 73, Don W3FPR John D'Ausilio wrote: I've been searching around and I can't seem to locate any information on whether and how much delay there is between key in (or 8R) and key out on the XV series transverters. It fits in the pouch of the little nylon case I keep my KX1 in. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2007 CQP Oct 6-7 - www.cqp.org ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Questions for any K3 FTs
1. I understand the K3 has a much more sophisticated noise blanker than the K2. Also that the DSP includes a blanking capability. I'd appreciate any impressions as to how well these work, alone or in combination. 2. On the DVK capability, do we get some kind of audio sidetone when transmitting to reassure the op he punched the right button? Also, is the DVK controllable from a logging program like TRLOG? Re: [Elecraft] WA3WSJ: K3 vs Yaesu FT-450AT
Ed, I'd guess that the FT-450 is more like a TS-450 than a K3. The FT-450 seems to be targeted at newbie and casual HF users rather than being an "elite" class rig, like the K3 is purported to be. I'd wait for the K3, if I were you, but Yaesu is coming out with another new rig, the FT-950, which might be more what you're looking for, but it's not out yet, either. Given the problems with the FTDX9000 series and mediocre performance of the FT-2000, I'd be cautious before buying a Vertex/Standard product right now, however. Eric and Wayne revised the shipping date for K3s back to August 31, the last I heard, so if that date holds up, you really don't have that long to wait. It might be better to wait than end up with a rig you're not happy with. 73, Scott, N9AA Edward R. RE: [Elecraft] K2, KAT2 and displaced choke balun feed
I have a homebrew G5RV, about 105 feet long, up 40 feet, fed with home made open wire line (#12 wire), into about 25 feet of RG214, then to the station control (multi antenna's, transmitters, receivers, etc.) and into the K2. No baluns. The tuner tunes it great on all bands, highest swr is 1.3:1. I don't have the 160 meter option, might not work on that... [Elecraft] K1 backlight modification question
Hi everybody, I have just ordered the backlight mod kit for my K1 (#01755, 40-30-20-15 m). Because of the time honored adage of "if it aint broke, don't fix it," I always get a little nervous about doing rework. Are there any special difficulties or tricks that I should be aware of before I start my upgrade?
