Eric Many thanks for your video link talk and question/answer session on the K3. I'm sure it was appreciated by everybody in the room, which was packed out. Sorry to clutter the list with this, but I figure I should finish the story. The mast arrived Wed. It was not boxed at all, just shipped in its carrying bag. It survived the trip to VT just fine. 12 Pieces, each 48" long, yielding 44 feet of mast length. So be warned, the goods are good but the mast is not shiped in any box of any kind. [Elecraft] K3 Build
I've built two K3's in the past five days from production kits just as they are shipped to customers as part of an extended field test deployed by Elecraft. This is another example of Elecraft's diligent focus on their customers and quality across the range. Not surprisingly, K3 customers will be delighted, whether they ordered a kit or a factory-assembled unit. The K3 FAQ says build time is 7-9 hours and my experience was exactly that. Of course it depends on the options included, but most of them are trivial, if done along with the main kit. It also depends on your own skill and assembly speed. I tend to be a slower builder, lingering on every word in the manual, looking ahead, trying to foresee issues, etc. My K2 build time is longer than many. The first K3 I built, last Friday evening, was a K3/10, KAT3, KXV3, KBPF3, five roofing filters and the KPA3. It took about nine hours, of which 1.5 hours were spent doing a detailed inventory at the beginning. As most of you know, inventory time pays itself back immensely in reduced assembly time plus fewer errors and re-work. I built the second unit yesterday afternoon and it took less than seven hours, owing to my experience with the first one. In fact, I think I could build a complete K3 without the manual now! However, both builds took longer than normal because I was making copious notes in the margins of the manual for Elecraft engineering and production. Here is the time break-down on the K3 built yesterday: Inventory - 1 hour (starting from slitting the packing tape on the shipping box) Build K3/10 with KAT3 - 4.3 hours Inventory & build KPA3 - 1 hour Inventory & build KXV3 - 10 minutes Inventory & build KBPF3 - 10 minutes The most time-consuming part of installing options is removing the top and both bottom covers (30-40 screws?), so if you can do them together or as part of the main kit, there is some time saved removing and installing covers. The quality of the assembly manual, the parts and the design is extraordinary. This is a class product. And when you're finished, the radio rivals most any on the market today at any price, manufactured in much larger facilities than the combination of Elecraft's modest kitting room and your home workbench. 73, Ed - W0YK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] RE: K3 Build [now ... Screw Counts]
A little elf whispered in my ear about my errant facts regarding the number of cover screws necessary to remove/install when adding an option to the K3. Despite my undergraduate degree in mathematics I can't count correctly. Lest I leave people with the wrong perception about the K3 screw count, let me make a more analytical correction. The cover screw count is: Top - 9 Bottom front - 7 Bottom rear - 10 So, even if you do remove all three covers, it is only 26 screws (did I add those up right?). However, my little elf also reminded me that most options (soon to be all options I'm told) really only require one of the bottom covers to be removed. So this is about half the number in my original posting. To add a roofing filter, for example, requires the top cover and bottom front cover to be removed ... 16 screws. The filter plugs into its socket through the top of the K3 and it is secured by a single screw inserted through the main RF board from the bottom. Incredibly simple and comprehensively sound, electrically and mechanically. As I think about this cover removal/replacement scenario a bit more, I realize that the K3 is (once again) very unique from other radios in a most positive way. Adding a filter in some other radios may involve less screw removal but that is at a cost of many times more weight and volume because there is a mechanical infrastructure including hundreds of screws and tens of special sheet metal parts, castings, etc. As one can see from K3 pictures or the real thing, there ain't much in a K3 beyond these few screws and a very few sheet metal parts plus ten of those ingenious 2D fasteners. KL7RA peered inside Tree's K3 and asked, "Where's the radio?" 73, Ed - W0YK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. In particular noting that: - Wikipedia is not a primary source, so everything you say must be supported by reliable external sources - you should reflect any negative sources as well as the positive ones - you should not select from sources to give a specific impression, or even make claims of favourable reviews, unless you can find a reliable source that makes that claim; - vendor literature is very low on the list of reliable sources; - BBS and mailing list comments are pretty much considered totally unreliable (a Peter Hart review or the ARRL equivalent would be examples of reliable sources). Basically about all you could legitimately say about it is that it exists and when it was launched, but, in any case, anyone on this mailing list almost certainly has too strong a "point of view" to write a valid article. Most articles are bad because they are not traceable to primary sources.) -- David Woolley Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want. RE: [Elecraft] K3 Option Manuals up on Web Page
Remember that the K3 is designed to be built and options added by even inexperienced builders. Each Option manual assumes that installing it is the FIRST time that Ham has ever opened the lid of a rig. Elecraft takes seriously the idea of promoting "Hands-on Ham Radio" not just for solder jocks, but for everyone who wants some first-hand experience with the covers off. So we were very careful about including a full set of warnings as well as detailed, fully-illustrated procedure and other minutiae such as exactly what tools to have on hand. What's obvious to many of us can be mysterious and intimidating to others. Elecraft wants them to "take the plunge"! [Elecraft] K3 Status Update - 10/17/2007
Hi, We've been receiving a flood of emails lately asking questions about K3 shipping and what we're up to here in Aptos. I apologize that we can not reply to all of them as we're totally focused on getting K3s out the door. We are slowly ramping up in fits and starts and definitely have shipped more than just one K3. :-) We'll ship for one day and then pause for a day or two to make sure that everything is correct. We'll make small changes to the manufacturing process and then ship some more etc. The last week was slower than we wanted, mostly due to minor manufacturing glitches, delays printing the manuals, making sure the boards were fully tested and getting a regular flow of completed PCB assemblies (i.e. complete sets of boards) from our assembly sub-contractor. They are finally coming up to speed and it looks like next week will be the first time that they will be supplying more board sets to us than we can digest and ship daily. That will allow us to get ahead on our testing of boards in batches and to run our process more efficiently. Most of the first shipments have gone out UPS ground and via Priority mail. I think only one customer asked for it overnight, and that one went out today. As a result many of them are just receiving their K3s now and may not start building them until this weekend. The customers we've shipped to so far were very early orders from Visalia etc. and we've been closely communicating with them to make sure they received everything that was supposed to be there and that there were no major problems building and getting the kit running. :-) These are regular customers, but we are being very careful to make sure that we do not ship a large number of K3s with infant problems (in the kit or printed docs.) A number of them are bringing up their kits now and I expect you will see more postings beginning next week. Just this morning we got news one of them is 100% up and running and very happy. Also remember than not all of our customers are on the Elecraft list and some even do not use email. (Less than 50% of the customers in our database are on the Elecraft list.) So far we've been shipping just kits to keep everything under control. Next week we will begin shipping some fully built rigs too. We brought up the first factory built K3 today (that will ship to a customer who ordered it as the first built K3 at Visalia) and it is fully functional, going through final burn-in and test right now. We're being careful and conservative - trying to make sure quality trumps quantity in these early shipping days. In any case, I think we should see an increase of K3 owner comments starting some time next week. (And more K3 shipments too!) 73, Eric WA6HHQ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Sidetone
Joe, Easy - go into the menu, select ST L, then press EDIT to edit the parameter. Tap DISPLAY to toggle the sidetone source. When you hear sidetone, stop tapping DISPLAY. 73, Don W3FPR Joe Fowler wrote: Well, I did it. While playing with my K2's menu, I killed my sidetone. Any Ideas? [Elecraft] OT: News Article on "Tin Whiskers" Ruining Electronics
A recent Associated Press article discusses a topic that's received much attention on this reflector: the negative consequences of environmental restrictions on lead in solder for electronics. The primary concern the article mentions is that tin, when in an alloy absent of lead, promotes the spontaneous growth of tiny "tin whiskers" that can short traces in circuit boards. Failures stemming from whiskers are cited in electronics ranging from consumer items to satellites. The article as it appeared in my local newspaper had a very dramatic photo of whiskers on a tin-plated tuning capacitor. http://www.theworldlink.com/articles/2007/10/06/news/doc4707c03901b23958789121.txt I should note, for newcomers to the reflector, that Elecraft's list of approved solders specifically cautions against using any that are lead free: http://www.elecraft.com/TechNotes/N0SS_SolderNotes/Elecraft-Recommended%20Solders%2009JAN2007.pdf Dick, K0KK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] OT: News Article on "Tin Whiskers" Ruining Electronics
Typical of news reports, the media seems to concentrate on the sensational. Certainly, the proliferation of throw-away consumer electronics ending up in landfills is a grave concern for adding to the lead content of our environment, and I applaud the efforts to keep that to a minimum. But, consider just how many ham rigs end up in landfills - not many in my opinion. We have many avid collectors of old ham gear and in many cases, boat anchors are a prized possession. Lead-free solders are a real salvation for manufacturers (BTW, the K3 and later K2 boards are RoHS compliant) who can implement the lead-free techniques. For personal soldering, I chose to use my 63/37 alloy solder, and I know that little of it will ever find its way to the landfill. The 'tin-whiskers' problem is one that exists mainly at the chip level. The migration of conductive paths between pins that can be soldered by hand techniques is *not* a problem because the 'whiskers' typically do not extend that far. It is a problem inside the chips where distances are measured in angstroms rather than in fractional inches or millimeters. Bottom line - while you may eventually see this 'tin whiskers' problem resulting in IC failures, it will not be apparent in the soldering that we hams do, even with the fine pitch SMD devices. 73, Don W3FPR Dick & Judy Lamb wrote: A recent Associated Press article discusses a topic that's received much attention on this reflector: the negative consequences of environmental restrictions on lead in solder for electronics. [Elecraft] K3 SO2R
If you're anticipating a treat when you get your hands on a K3 to operate for the first time, you'll be blown away with two of them in a SO2R configuration. I ran two K3s tonight in the NCCC Sprint and experienced yet another level of operating pleasure. Incomparable. Prior to this, with the K3 in one ear and another radio it the other ear, the K3 was strikingly better to listen with. But, with both radios being K3's, it is wholly different than any prior operating session. It feels like I entered a new hobby. And, even after three months of operating the K3, I'm still not fully accustomed to its many features and performance. Tonight, for example, I would sometimes switch both sides of the headphones to one K3. But, it sounded like only one earpiece was working. I ignored that until after Sprint and then discovered that, yes, there was audio in each side when switched to one radio. It only sounded like the signal was in one spot because I had the AFX Binaural feature turned on. This effect was accentuated by the much lower noise component in the audio of the K3, even on 40, 80 and 160. So, it appeared like only one earpiece was working, when in fact several great features of the K3 were combining to put the CW signal in a precise spot in my sensory perception. With the K3, my brain needs to be re-trained to copy CW without the background rumble of noise and distortion and extraneous artifacts that I hear with other radios. And the AFX feature in this significantly higher fidelity environment is simply stunning. I apologize for feeding any "K3 arrival anxiety" some of you may have, but continue to be patient ... Aptos is pushing these puppies out the door. You may also be REALLY miffed that someone is enjoying two K3s when you don't yet have your first one. But, its only because I was one of the first to put my money down when it was introduced at Visalia in April, in addition to being a field tester. (I remember asking Eric if it was a problem for me to put down a deposit on a production unit when I was already on the field test team. He replied, "Heck no, if you pay money, you're a customer. We don't discriminate!") 73, Ed - W0YK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] [OT] Software for Learning Morse Code
A friend of mine recently retired and has expressed a desire to learn code (International Morse). I hope that someone on this list may have taught code as part of an Amateur Radio class and will have a suggestion of a good software package that my friend could use.
