I've had many a #1 driver with too sharp a tip to get a tight fit, the

The screw drivers with the sharp tip are Reid Prince screw drivers. When you
buy a screw driver be sure you are getting a Philips screw driver. The Philips

The K3

Hi all,

If its magnetic, will the washer remain on the screw whilst
on the head of the screwdriver? If so can do job in one go
- hopefully.

Regards 73 Alan

Dave said:
You probably would be wise to use a screwdriver that is
magnetic so that you can move the screw down over the hole
and begin to screw it in. The required washer can be
places over the hole by just sliding them into position
using the small slots on the side where the screwholes are
located. But those slots aren't big enough to do the same
with the screw itself. But using a magnetic tipped
screwdriver also can cause a small problem as you approach
the screwhole where you have already placed the washer.
The washer wants to move due to the magnetic attraction.
So you have to aim and shoot somewhat deftly. But it
works. Somebody else probably has a much simpler
solution to this.

Can do the job easily in one go using a 'Grabber' held in one hand, about as
difficult as holding a pen and WITHOUT the risk of losing a washer, screw or
whatever. The tool was also stocked by RS (Radio Spares) at one time, their
stock number 537-293 and described as a Retrieving Tool. After starting to
thread the screw (with washer) using the Grabber, the job is completed with
a screwdriver. The tool can also be used to hold a screw and washer in place
while the mating nut is threaded onto the screw with a nutdriver ( assuming
Clinch Nuts are not being used) to illustrate just one of the many other
jobs that can be handled.

[Elecraft] [K3] A Welcome in the Hillsides

2007-12-10 Thread GW0ETF

After weeks of rain and wind the sun finally appeared in the mountains of
Snowdonia today - and so did K3 000145, courtesy of UPS Express...!

Original order placed on May 2nd, emailed invoice (47492) received from
Aptos on December 3rd, UPS Shipping Notification received December 6th and
the box delivered on the scheduled date (today).

UPS Express without a hitch. No import duty demands (didn't expect any..)
just a request for a cheque for 210 ukp for VAT and 'brokerage charges'
which took about 3 minutes; like a visit to the dentist you want this sort
of thing over and done with as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Now to finish unpacking though it may be interrupted when I sneak off to
take advantage of the superb afternoon conditions on 20m to the
mountain/desert states of the western US we've been having the last week or
so. Can't let the arrival of a K3 kit interfere with ham radio now can
we...?

Very interesting page.

I'd been aware of Reid and Prince for over 50 years, but hadn't heard

One curious thing is that they use the term Square Recess instead

I'd always heard them called Robertson.
I believe it was McFeely's in Lynchburg, Virginia that was

I've been playing in the contest on-and-off.
QRP is always tough but it looks like this is going to be a worked all

rest of us.

The good news is that I had done a little work on my K2 (QRP version--no
100w option) and wanted to know if it was behaving well. My friend in NH
just over the border) worked me and said the radio sounded like music.
I know that's music to my ears!

Conditions aren't the greatest. I've put about 20 in the log with MA,
NH, and ME as mults.
I've got just a dipole hidden in some adjacent woods. Perhaps those with
aluminum farms are having better luck?

I must say, as I sit here I'm thinking of building another K2. This
really is a sweet little radio!

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Boot Camp / Windows XP experiences

2007-12-10 Thread Tedd Wong
Hi Toby,

I don’t have my K3 “yet” but I am currently running an Icom ic-7000 with HRD
under both boot camp (physical XP partion) and VMware Fusion (virtual XP) on my
Macbook Pro. Both configurations work well but very dependent on the USB –
Serial Converter cable used. I also run MacloggerDX under Leopard to control
the Icom. I’ve found that some FTDI chip based serial converter work and some
don’t. I’ve had the best luck with Prolific chip based converters but you have
to go to their website to get the Mac driver. I think it has something to do
with which drivers are most compatible with OS X. I’m not sure what chip the
USB converter from Elecraft is based on but I’m pretty sure it would work fine.
Also if you run RTTY with FSK only specific converters are compatible. I run
N1MM with MMTTY under Fusion (virtual XP) on my Macbook Pro with my Prolific
converter cable. It takes care of PTT and FSK.

I’m sure the USB – Serial converter compatibility issue would apply no matter
which brand of radio is being used. Good luck and enjoy your K3 as I patiently
wait for mine.

Tedd K6OI

[Elecraft] Desk Mike for K3

I have noted a few posts regarding the microphone and connector for
the K3. Those mentioned are either
hand mikes or Pro-Set type mikes. What I really want is a desk mike. I
don't know the Kenwood line and,
frankly, have little experience with microphones in general but am
moving cautiously that direction.

In other words, is there a stock Kenwood desk microphone that will
work with the K3. It would need a PTT

RE: [Elecraft] K2 suddenly stops RX while on 160

2007-12-10 Thread Jukka Tarvainen
Hi Don!

Thank you for good advice once again!

C75 in your K2 needs less capacitance. You can try several other 470 pf
capacitors (NPO disc ceramics or C0G mono capacitors) to see if you can
discover one that is on the low side of tolerance rather than the high
side (like yours), or you can replace C75 with a 390 to 450 pf capacitor
and add padder capacitors to bring the total capacitance up so the 160
meter VCO voltages are in the 1.5 to 7.0 volt range over the entire
 tuning range.

Today I got some NPO disc ceramic caps and tried different variations. With
330+150 pF in parallel measured VCO voltages are now inside 1.5-7.0 V:

1800 kHz 1.6 V
2000 kHz 4.0 V

These new capacitors are not small in physical size, bigger is 10 mm, about
0.4 in diameter. Does size matter in this circuit?

Has anyone ever used an Alpha Delta DX40-20 antenna?

Not me but for what it's worth I've used the DX-40 for the past three
years and *highly* recommend it. Well made. rugged, reliable, great
performer.

I had best results when I used it in a flat-top, non inverted vee
format, about 50 feet off the ground. Unfortunately I don't have that
kind of space in the new QTH, though it does perform very well at
about 40 feet with slight vee (one leg is more vee-ey than the other
right now). Not ideal but works well.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: more than you should ever want to know about Screwhead Types

2007-12-10 Thread Don Wilhelm

Yes, it is true that there are many screwhead types.
Contrary to comments earlier on this reflector, using a Pozidrive as a
Phillips screwdriver is not always a good idea - the Pozidrive will not
fit into a correctly sized Phillips screwhead forcing one to use a
smaller size Pozidrive.

One thing for certain, those Phillips screwdrivers that have a sharp
tip are not Phillips type at all - either blunt the point with a grinder
until it fits with precision into a Phillips screwhead or buy a proper
Phillips screwdriver. I always have preferred Xcelite brand
screwdrivers - they fit my hands quite nicely and feel comfortable in use.

Very interesting page.

I'd been aware of Reid and Prince for over 50 years, but hadn't heard
anyone mention them in quite a long time.

One curious thing is that they use the term Square Recess instead
of Robertson.
I'd always heard them called Robertson.
I believe it was McFeely's in Lynchburg, Virginia that was
instrumental in reviving interest in the Robertson bit.

[Elecraft] Recommended K3/100 filters

2007-12-10 Thread Mike Geddes
My K3/100 has been on order for a couple of weeks now. Really excited about
the prospect of it getting here on down the road. Here is my question . . .
what optional filters should be ordered for this rig? I work SSB mainly,
and some CW. And neither in contest situations really. I was thinking
about the 250 and 500 Hz CW filters, as well as the 2.8Khz SSB. What do
some of you K3 owners think about this? What are your recommendations?

For regular SSB work, the standard 2.7 kHz filter should be fine. The
jury is still out on whether the 8-pole 2.8 is worth the extra money.

For CW, you should have the 500 or 400 (same caveat about the more
expensive 8-pole version).

I have found the 1 kHz filter very useful for CW, because I like to
listen with a wider bandwidth.

Probably only serious digital guys need the 250. Remember that you can
narrow the bandwidth with the DSP, and the filters are only used to
protect the DSP from signals greater than about S9+30.

This is all just MY OPINION and others may disagree!

FWIW I hear the difference as the 250Hz kicks in as I change the bandwidth
from 300Hz down to 250Hz, the difference is (I think) less DSP noise - maybe
Lyle can explain. It's not a problem at all.

For SSB I have the 1.8kHz and that really is a great filter, I was listening
on 40m a few hours ago with 1.6kHz bandwidth - very, very good.

I agree about 1kHz for tuning about on CW.

Hi Mike,
Along with others here is my recommendation. You work mostly
SSB very little CW and no contesting to speak of. I don't see
why you would want a CW filter more narrow than 1khz. If you
need to be tighter than that, probably not, but you can narrow it all
down with the DSP. OTOH if you have the bux, go for it all.

[Elecraft] K3 Assembly special tools

Some builders have suggested that a special tool in needed for some of the
assembly, eg a grabber type to hold screws and washers. If this is a
necessity for proper assembly, it would do us all a favour if Elecraft would

I did the whole thing with a small Phillips head screwdriver and a 1/2 inch

friction so I didn't need any other nut drivers. The resistance checks can be
handled with a $4.95 ohm meter. Oh yes, you need a thermometer to measure
room

You will also need magnification appropriate to your age. If you don't use

Perhaps you can comment on what sort of improvement was noted when

At what SWR value does the K3 reduce output power. Or to ask another way, at
what SWR level will the radio coutinue to produce full output (without damage).

RE: [Elecraft] Desk Mike for K3

2007-12-10 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

If the Kenwood desk mic includes a preamplifier or electret
element it will not be compatible with the stock Elecraft mic
connections. You will need to open the Foster plug on the
Kenwood mic and move the wire on pin 5 (Kenwood bias) to pin
6 (Elecraft bias) or install batteries in the base of the
Kenwood deck mic.

The MC-60A (with preamplifier turned off) and the MC-90 are
pure dynamic desk mics that should require no modification
to work with the K3.

It would need a PTT
 button, of course.

[Elecraft] Recommended K3/100 filters

2007-12-10 Thread Dave G4AON

Terry

It's just the usual removal of adjacent signals, no big click or
anything like that, just a smooth transition with an improvement in
skirt selectivity - much as you would expect with a narrower filter.
Under low signal level band conditions as here at 2230 local time on
80m, there's not much difference, under contest conditions when 40m is
pounding in it's more noticeable. It's hard to describe, the K3 just
does what you would expect a decent receiver to do without fuss, filter
ringing or any other artefacts. I guess the only real test is to have
two K3s side by side, one with filter A and the other with filter B
as the DSP bandwidth is linked to the roofing filter, so it's hard to
open one IF leaving the other narrow. Suffice to say I think the $120
for the 400 Hz 8 pole CW filter is money well spent, as to whether it's
necessary to use 8 poles rather than 5 is something I can't answer, as I
only have 8 pole filters.

[Elecraft] K3 Roofing Filters - Zerobeat

2007-12-10 Thread waltk8cv4612amos
Use the shape factor to predict the 60 db down response or band width.
example = the 200 Hz filter has 4 to 1 so ... multiply with
a calculator the 6 db response by 4 and that would equal 224 X 4 = 896 Hz
and the 8 pole 250 Hz has a 2 X 1 so it is 270 X 2 = 740 !

so the 8 pole is really 156 Hz narrower than the 200 in getting rid of LOUD
ADJACENT QRM !

You can do the math for yourself ...

[Elecraft] K3 Filter Switching Problem?

2007-12-10 Thread k4tmc

Warning! K3 filter use item follows.

Currently, I only have the standard 2.7 KHz filter in the FL3 slot on
the RF board. I chose this location due to potential future additions
of the 2.1 and 1.8 KHz filters, in slots FL2 and FL1 respectively.

Here is what I observe: With FL3 manually selected via the XFIL button;
when I try to rotate the Width control below a value of 2.7 KHz, the
rig automatically switches to the FL1 position, which is empty. The
receiver goes dead. When I quickly reverse the Width adjustment, FL3
is not switched back. I have to manually select FL3 again with the
XFIL button. Once back in FL3, I can adjust the Width control to
higher values above 2.7 KHz with no problem and the passband gets wider.

Is this normal? I thought the DSP circuit would continue to narrow the
passband even though the roofing filter is broader. But, why does it
switch to an empty filter slot? Did I do something wrong during the
Configuration setup?

Is this a firmware issue? I have not downloaded the latest updates yet.

If I had narrower filters in the FL1 and FL2 slots, then I would expect
the circuit to auto-switch to those as I narrowed the passband via the
Width control. And, they should switch back in reverse order as I
widen the passband. Right?

This is very misleading, because the ultimate selectivity is provided by
the DSP.

So even though there would a big difference if the selectivity were
provided only by the filters, they are only needed to protect the DSP. A
signal *within the crystal passband* has to be S9 +30 dB before it will
activate the hardware AGC; so if a signal is already on the skirt of the
crystal filter, it will have to be even louder before any desensing will
take place.

In your CONFIG menu for FLx ON, do you still have FL1 and/or FL2 set to ON for
ANY

one filter installed and it's in FL3, that should be the only one set as FL3 ON

YES. FL1 ON, FL2 ON, FL4 ON and FL5 ON should all be set to NO for all modes.

[Elecraft] FILTER SETTINGS

2007-12-10 Thread Bill Tippett
Here's a tip for setting up the 500 Hz filter if you use one. The actual 6
dB bandwidth is 565 Hz, so in the FLx BW menu I set 0.60. This means the
500 Hz filter is activated at WIDTH = 600 instead of 500. The advantage of
this is when you use DUAL PB. That function sets the narrow passband to 150
Hz and the wider passband to 600 Hz. Since the 500 Hz filter is now
activated at 600, this means the 500 Hz is in use for DUAL PB, which can
greatly help desense problems versus the stock 2.7k, which would otherwise
be selected in DUAL PB mode.

The wider passband is 600 Hz at its narrowest setting, YOU can make it
much wider just by rotating the WIDTH control once you are in DUAL PB mode.

True. But as soon as you widen to 650 Hz, the next
higher roofing filter kicks in and (in my somewhat limited
experience of 8 days) there is a *HUGE* difference in desense
susceptibility between the 500 Hz and higher BW filters. Living
in the land of GIANT signals where I do on 160, DUAL PB would
be virtually unusable without the 500 Hz filter.

In the apostrophe bucket, which is next to the bit bucket, unless of course they

Of course there are some careless typists, like myself you type don;t for don't,
since it saves a key-stroke and most folks catch the meaning.

You K3 guys are great! Thanks for the quick responses.

I had not set all of the FL1 positions to OFF during the filter setup
activity.

It pays to read carefully, and then re-read, some of those instructions.

The Width function now operates as I was expecting.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Filter Switching Problem?

Warning! K3 filter use item follows.

Currently, I only have the standard 2.7 KHz filter in the FL3 slot on
the RF board. I chose this location due to potential future additions
of the 2.1 and 1.8 KHz filters, in slots FL2 and FL1 respectively.

Here is what I observe: With FL3 manually selected via the XFIL button;
when I try to rotate the Width control below a value of 2.7 KHz, the
rig automatically switches to the FL1 position, which is empty. The
receiver goes dead. When I quickly reverse the Width adjustment, FL3
is not switched back. I have to manually select FL3 again with the
XFIL button. Once back in FL3, I can adjust the Width control to
higher values above 2.7 KHz with no problem and the passband gets
wider.

Is this normal? I thought the DSP circuit would continue to narrow the
passband even though the roofing filter is broader. But, why does it
switch to an empty filter slot? Did I do something wrong during the
Configuration setup?

Is this a firmware issue? I have not downloaded the latest updates
yet.

If I had narrower filters in the FL1 and FL2 slots, then I would expect
the circuit to auto-switch to those as I narrowed the passband via the
Width control. And, they should switch back in reverse order as I
widen the passband. Right?

[Elecraft] A K3 filter observation

2007-12-10 Thread Ken Kopp

Mine has 6, 2.8, 2.1, 1 and .4 kHz 8-pole roofing filters.

It's amazing that I can move from the widest to the narrowest
filter with a twirl of the Width control while tuned to a CW
signal ... using the NEAT CWT feature ... and not hear any
sign that I've (actually, the radio) has switched through five filters.

There is -NO- ringing. Impressive!

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Filter Switching Problem?

2007-12-10 Thread Craig Rairdin
BTW: FL1 should be the highest bandwidth and FL5 the most narrow

Other way around, but it actually doesn't matter. Any filter can be in any
slot and the DSP will select the right one as you crank the bandwidth down.
The reason for keeping them in some order is so that when you rotate through
them with XFIL they'll make sense (i.e. they get narrower and narrower each
time you press, then when you're at your narrowest the next press takes you
to your widest).

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Roofing Filters - Zerobeat

2007-12-10 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

 270 x 2 = 540, so the difference is 356Hz. ;-)

However, the 250 Hz filter is actually 370 Hz at the - 6dB
points according to previous e-mail here.

With the K3, the point of diminishing returns for IMD (and
close in rejection) is perhaps - 30dB instead of -60dB or
more in a conventional crystal filter only radio.

If we use a straight line (linear slope) from the -6dB to
-60dB points the 200 and 250 Hz filters look like this:

  200 250
  -
   - 6dB 224 Hz370 Hz
   -60dB 896 Hz777 Hz
slope 6.22 Hz/dB3.77 Hz/dB (one side)

   -10dB 274 Hz400 Hz
   -20dB 398 Hz475 Hz
   -30dB 522 Hz550 Hz
   -40dB 647 Hz626 Hz
   -50dB 771 Hz702 Hz

By this simple calculation (or by plotting on graph paper) one
can see that the 200 Hz filter should do a BETTER job as the
most narrow filter. It remains tighter to about -35 dB
and the five pole design should result in less pulse stretching
(ringing in the presence of static) than the 250 (really 350 Hz)
filter.

   ... Joe, W4TV
