[Elecraft] Serial Number 133

2007-12-21 Thread Keith Bainbridge
Last night at 11.50 my youngest daughter left for England and the family
was sad, but .. 29 minutes later my new baby arrived in Perth !! so
all was joyous.
It was ordered in the early hours of 29th April and was delivered approx
8 months and 23 days later, a perfect gestation period.
I picked it up this morniong and can report father and bub doing well
getting to know each other !
Serial number is 133 and its a fully assembled, 100watt , complete with
ATU bouncing bundle of health.

Just need to get the settings right on the mic and will be on air tonight.
It was supposed to be a birthday present in July but turned out to be a
great Xmas pressie instead.
Thanks to Lisa for her patience with my persistant enquiries and to the
Elecraft team for such a fine radio... and isnt the receiver quiet !!

[Elecraft] External automatic antenna tuner

2007-12-21 Thread Forrest Hudspeth
Gentlemen:

I don't recall any questions (or answers) about having the K3 initiate an
external antenna tuner, like the LDG RT-11 or perhaps one of the Icom or SGC

So the questions are: will the K3 be able to use the tune button to initiate

on one coax output while still using (or not using) the internal tuner on

[Elecraft] K2 K60XV IF Selection Option Question

2007-12-21 Thread Michael Mussler
I'm using my K2 with a recieve converter for the 600m band, currently
interfaced via the receive antenna port. I recently installed the K60XV
accessory to my K2 in preparation for use of the K2 as the IF on both transmit
and receive on 600m. The problem: I discovered the firmware offers IF band
selection down to 7 MHz. My converter uses a 3.5 MHz IF, a real advantage for
image rejection with the RF input at 505 to 508 kHz. Can anyone on the
reflector describe what may be involved with changing the selections available
with the K60XV? Does it involve a firmware change or is there another
work-around? If a firmware change is needed, how do I go about doing that? Any
help or advice is much appreciated. I plan to use the K2 to operate digital
modes under the 600m experimental license, WD2XSH/12.

RE: [Elecraft] Lousy Tx audio reports using K2

2007-12-21 Thread Darwin, Keith

-Original Message-
...A previous message on this list mentioned that if you key the
transmitter in CAL FIL mode, at least for an SSB FL1 filter, the signal
is looped back to the receive side, through the filter. That could
allow you a way to adjust the filter settings while listening to your
own voice to see for yourself if it sounds bassy.
--

I didn't know about that. When I adjusted my K2, I used a Drake 2B
receiver to receive my own transmitted signal. I fed the audio from the
Drake into my PC through a good sound card. I then transmitted with the
K2 into a dummy load while I listened on the 2B. The recording showed
me exactly what another person would have heard and I was able to fine
tune my filter adjustment for my voice mic.

I then put the mic away and haven't used SSB since :-). Ah, life as a
hopeless CW junkie!

[Elecraft] Re: OT - K2 Keyer problems

2007-12-21 Thread Don Wilhelm

Kevin,

Cold temperatures can aggravate and reveal marginal solder connections
and socket/pin problems. I would recommend that you re-check all the
soldering on the Control Board and re-seat the microprocessor in its
socket to see if that helps.

I doubt if you will find any device failures at the temperatures you are
encountering - if the temperatures are below freezing, then you may be
having marginal devices fail to work properly, but at 40 deg F, I doubt
if any devices will fail - particularly those that read the control
settings.

Since you report that the speed changes are actually displayed, that
says that the microprocessor *thinks* the pot setting has changed.
There is a possibility that the speed pot itself is experiencing a
failure at low temperatures and a pot replacement is in order. If you
have ever used a control lube on your speed pot, then there could be a
coating inside the pot element that is temperature sensitive, or such a
lube coating may be something residual from the manufacturing process.

Those are the only possible causes that I can think of at the moment.

Recently I had my K2 (#2511) upgraded with the A to B mod kits. I have had some odd experiences with it since then.

When I get up each morning I need to stoke the fire to warm the house up. Sometimes the morning temperature is in the high 40s (F). Normally it is in the low 50s range. Not long after breakfast, both mine and Sam's, I am on the air working into Oklahoma. The shack temperature today was 55 when I started. My keyer was set at 23 wpm but the speed kept jumping all over the place. The display would show the new speed but only after I had flubbed a few characters due to the speed change. It would drop to 19 or jump to 28 wpm randomly. By the end of the contact (60 minutes) the shack temperature had risen to 58 and the variations had lessened somewhat but they were still occurring.

Do you, or anyone else, know what may cause these random speed variations? Is it the new firmware, the temperature, or some random thing? 2.04P 1.09 is the reading at start up to give you some idea of the firmware version.

Before the upgrade it would jump very rarely. Now it jumps more often. However, due to the change in seasons the rig is going through larger temperature cycles than it had been. I am nowhere near the wood stove so it does get pretty chilly back here. Once I take down my Christmas tree I'll move back up into the front room but for now I need some way to limit the speed cycling. Should I turn the rig on an hour before I get on the air to help it stabilize? Cover it with a tea cozy? Put a space heater under it? Take down the tree and move near the wood stove? Or could it be something which changed with the upgrade?
Any advice would be kindly appreciated,

Re: [Elecraft] K3's Transmit Inihibit function (TX INH)

2007-12-21 Thread Ian White GM3SEK

Wayne wrote:

Hi all,

I've just added the TX INH function and its associated menu entry to
the K3. Just in case you have no clue what this is: it provides a way
for an external station controller to determine which of two or more
transceivers can have access to resources such as an amplifier. It's
typically used in multi-op contest situations.

By popular demand, the TX inhibit level can be *either* active-low or
active-high. Thus the TX INH menu entry has three settings:

  OFF (no TX inhibit)
  LO=INH  (a logic 0 inhibits transmit)
  HI=INH  (a logic 1, 5 V, inhibits transmit)

I'm testing this feature right now, and it should be in the next
production firmware release.

Thank you, Wayne, that's excellent.

One final detail: if any external device is using the TX INH input as a
Clear To Send handshaking signal, then hopefully the CTS signal will
be interpreted as Clear To Send NOW, and the K3 will respond with the
absolute minimum of internal delays.

(Sorry to beat this horse again, but I'm asking now because it affects a
project that is already in the detailed planning stage. When the K3
arrives, I'll measure the TX/RX delays myself, of course.)

[Elecraft] xv222 - Diode Issue

2007-12-21 Thread John Hoaglun

Hello fellow builders:

I am building an xv222 transverter. The last step on page 28 is to sort
13 diodes.

1 - 1n5235 (D3)
2 - 1n5711 (D7,D8)
10 - 1n4148 (D1, D2, D3, D13, D6,D12,D9,D14,D15,D16)

I don't have a 1n5235... but there is a 1n5358 in the parts bag. All of
the parts match except for this one diode. Is the 1n5358 a
replacement/equivalent part? I don't see this listed in the errata
notes nor can I confirm/deny on the internet that they are
interchangeable parts.

Please respond to the list and cc me directly. (I get the digest version
of the list so I might not see the response... or in a timely fashion.)

Re: [Elecraft] Lousy Tx audio reports using K2

2007-12-21 Thread Don Wilhelm

Eddy,

It is important where you set the audio passband. Normally, there is no
lack of high frequency response with the 2.6kHz bandpass.

Using Spectrogram to set the SSB filters, I normally recommend that you
set markers at 300 Hz and the filter width plus 200 Hz - or in your
case, 2800 Hz. Center the FL1 (OP1) passband between those markers and
try it out. With most voices and microphones, those settings are
correct, and wil work quite well for receive as well. For FL2, I use
the variable filter and set it 300 Hz less than FL1 - it is important to
measure the actual width with Spectrogram since at wide setting the
numbers shown by the K2 are usually incorrect. Set the low frequency
corner of all the SSB filter passbands at 300 Hz to maintain
intelligibility as the filters are narrowed.

If you are 'netting' with other hams at a specific frequency, you should
check your dial calibration - if you are not tuned to the actual
frequency of the other hams (because your dial calibration is off), it
could be that your audio is OK, but you are placing your transmit
frequency a bit high or low. The K2 Dial Calibration article on my
website http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com can give you the procedure for
obtaining good dial calibration.

If filter alignment as I have outlined does not solve your problem, you
may have a microphone that is lacking in response at the higher audio
frequencies, but the MH2 usually has a bit of boost for the highs - you
might want to see if one of the locals near you has an MH2 that you can
compare with.

This is certainly one excellent use of the KAT3's LCSET mode, Leigh.

You've also given me an idea for a BL3: Same as the BL2 but with a
relay rather than a switch for selecting 1:1 vs. 4:1. We could then use
one of the K3's spare output lines (say DIGOUT1) to switch the relay
under firmware control, per-band. There would be one wire running from
the AUX I/O connector to the BL3, and you'd need to power the relay
from the K3's switched 12 VDC accessory output.

If this is of interest, I'll ask the BL2's designer to take a look at
it. I have the same problem myself, so I already want two :)

[Elecraft] 12 VDC Output (was: Automatic 1:1/4:1 Balun switching under K3 control?)

2007-12-21 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Wayne,

There would be one wire running from the AUX I/O connector to
the BL3, and you'd need to power the relay from the K3's switched
 12 VDC accessory output.

What is the spec for the 12 VDC accessory output? OM7ZZ ran into
some issues in interfacing with the K3 from the VP6DX group because
the accessory output was only 10.8 volts even with a well regulated
13.8V supply to the transceiver.

10.8 would be marginal depending on cable resistance for a remote
relay and is certainly too low for most of the commercial antenna
switches that use 12 V relays.

[Elecraft] Re: 12 VDC Output

2007-12-21 Thread wayne burdick

Joe,

We just measured the voltage at the 12V ACC output on three K3s. DC
into the K3 APP connector was 13.80 in all cases (measured at the APP
connector, K3 powered ON, in receive mode).

No load output: 13.1 VDC in all cases.

Loaded output (500mA): very close to 12.0 VDC on all three units
tested. It should be a lot higher at the typical current required for
one relay ( 100 mA).

So the total drop at maximum rated load is about 1.8 V. Circuit drops
include two series protection diodes, two self-resetting fuses, and the
PMOS FET on/off switch (Q2). These should not be bypassed or removed,
as that would compromise the safety of the ACC output.

You could replace D34 (1N4007) with a 1N5817/18/19 or SB520/530 to get
a few tenths of a volt lower drop if required. You could get another
couple of tenths by replacing both D6 and D34 with 95SQ015's, although
they're very expensive.

Sounds like OM7ZZ's output was loaded too heavily, or that he had the
radio switched off when measured it, which would provide only leakage
current. OTOH he could have tripped F2, the self-resetting fuse for the
ACC output.

I have to second this. The K3 DSP is what DSP should be; the filters
are very sharp, yet even at the lower bandwidths (down to 50 Hz)
they don't ring excessively. It really shines with the noise reduction
function (NR). Firstly, the NR level is adjustable so you can tune it
for the minimum necessary for the situation, but even at its most
aggressive the ONLY artifact I have noticed is a slightly hollow
bottom of the well sound with NO degradation of the
information be it ssb or cw.

Lyle has out-done himself on this!

 LO=INH  (a logic 0 inhibits transmit)
 HI=INH  (a logic 1, 5 V, inhibits transmit)

I'm testing this feature right now, and it should be in the next
 production firmware release.

Adding TX Inhibit was a great feature to have. Looking at the details

keeping TX-INH where it is and adding fuctionality for transverter setups
both LP/HP??

i bought this one after the price increase. total of all i bought from

Hi Ben,

As I'll be explaining in the next edition of the owner's manual, the
XVTR ON signal is just a DC voltage that's present when the K3 is
turned on. It doesn't turn on only when you're on transverter bands,
and really should be called something else (like Hey, I'm on!). It
behaves the same as the related pin on the K2's 9-pin connector.

If you need to use this pin on the K3 for TX INH, instead, you can
still get a functionally equivalent XVTR ON signal by using the K3's
switched 12 VDC (at the accessory output RCA jack). Just connect it to
pin 9 of the transverter control port. You can use a series resistor,
say 1 K, since very little current is required at the transverter to
turn its MOSFET power switch on.

I'll be including full details for the K3 to transverter interface in
the manual. Sorry for the delay.

It is important where you set the audio passband. Normally, there is no

[Elecraft] RE: 12 VDC Output

2007-12-21 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Wayne,

Sounds like OM7ZZ's output was loaded too heavily, or that he had the
radio switched off when measured it, which would provide only leakage
current. OTOH he could have tripped F2, the self-resetting fuse for the
 ACC output.

His load was a microHAM microKEYER II (setting everything for the trip).
Unit is rated at 400 mA and will indicate a fault if the input drops
below 11 volts.

The rig and cables are on their way back to the DL group by now.

No load output: 13.1 VDC in all cases.

Loaded output (500mA): very close to 12.0 VDC on all three units
tested. It should be a lot higher at the typical current required for
 one relay ( 100 mA).

1.5 volts +/- at 500 mA is a bit much but it's not a big problem since
MK II can use external power but it would have been nice to avoid yet
another power supply for each station for the VP6DX group. It certainly
should not be a problem for a single relay application.

In the meantime, I'll take another look when my first K3 arrives
(whenever that is G).

Circuit drops
include two series protection diodes, two self-resetting fuses, and
the PMOS FET on/off switch (Q2). These should not be bypassed or
removed, as that would compromise the safety of the ACC output.

 You could replace D34 (1N4007) with a 1N5817/18/19 or SB520/530 to get
a few tenths of a volt lower drop if required. You could get another
couple of tenths by replacing both D6 and D34 with 95SQ015's,
 although they're very expensive.

Sounds like OM7ZZ's output was loaded too heavily, or that he had the
radio switched off when measured it, which would provide only leakage
current. OTOH he could have tripped F2, the self-resetting
 fuse for the ACC output.

[Elecraft] K3 key beeps

2007-12-21 Thread Ian J Maude
A very small and insignificant request for key beeps please. Maybe
switchable? Keys with no current function give a beep but I would find
beeps useful on other keys.
This may be in there already but I only had #143 through my hands

Re: [Elecraft] Lousy Tx audio reports using K2

2007-12-21 Thread Don Wilhelm

Eddy,

Since you mentioned a lack of highs, I doubt that the low-frequency
response mod will help much, but you certainly can try.

What is more important is the place the low frequency corner of the FL1
passband close to 300 Hz. If you do that, when you tune an SSB signal
so it sounds right in your K2, you will transmit on his frequency
(because you tuned his voice to fall into the 300 to 2800 kHz range
where it sounds best to most ears). If you OP1 filter is set 100 Hz
high or low, then you can still receive by skewing the frequency (you
really will not know you are doing that, but it happens that way), but
then when you transmit, you do not sound right to the person on the
receiving end.

When I set up a K2 that is in here for repair, I listen not only to the
received signal, but I listen to a transmitted signal on another
receiver. I have found that the 300 Hz filter corner (-3 to 6 dB point)
is the one most important factor in making transmit and receive line up
properly.

QSL. It wasn't meant for heavy loads.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the K3's 12 VDC accessory output
could be used simply as a switching signal, controlling a smaller relay
or a transistor that turns on the larger one. A separate 12 V supply,
battery, etc. could be used to provide switching power at the load, no
matter how distant.

Re: [Elecraft] External automatic antenna tuner

2007-12-21 Thread rkayakr

Forrest
I also requested this a few months ago. The K3 doesn't support external
tuners very well. Not only can it not trigger an external tuner or be
triggered to tune mode by one, but it doesn't drop to a safe power level on
tune like the K2 or other rigs. No promise of delivery on this.

BTW - the KRC2 is no help with this either

So the questions are: will the K3 be able to use the tune button to
 initiate
an external antenna tuner? If so, what are the particular pins on the
accessory jack to supply this tune button-initiated action?

[Elecraft] New K3 Firmware Update (MCU rev 1.53, DSP rev 1.47)

2007-12-21 Thread wayne burdick

Hi all,

We've just posted updated firmware on our FTP site. Be sure to install
the latest version of our firmware downloader (K3 Utility), revision
date 12-9-07, before you do the upgrade.

Here are the changes in this revision (within K3 Utility, use
Help/K3 Firmware Release Notes):

MCU 1.53 and DSP 1.47, 12-19-07

  * TX INH menu entry added (Transmit Inhibit). This can be used in
multi-transmitter stations
to control access to station resources such as amplifiers or
antennas. Default is OFF
(no inhibit function; pin 7 is then an output used as XVTRON). If
set to LO=INH or HI=INH,
operator must supply an external TTL or open-collector/open-drain
driver (a pullup to 5V
is required in this case). When the rig is inhibited, the TX LCD
icon flashes slowly (same
as TX TEST mode). Using transmit-start switches (XMIT, TUNE, ATU,
M1-M4) results in
a brief TX INH message on VFO B. The key, keyer paddle, /PTT, and
TX via PC

commands are all nonfunctional.

  * S-meter linearization above S9 has been improved. (Much greater
accuracy is
possible via an automated calibration algorithm. This is still in
development.)

  * LINE IN function now behaves correctly on power-up.

  * Receive filter controls (SHIFT, WIDTH, etc.) and switches (XFIL,
etc.) are locked out during

transmit.

  * TRANSVERTER SUPPORT:
   1. The XVn OFS menu entry is functional (+/- 9.99 kHz offset,
per transverter band).
   2. Elecraft XV-series transverter address is being sent via the
auxBus.

   3. M-V and V-M now work with transverter bands.
   4. Direct Freq Entry works between HF and transverter bands.
Examples of direct

  freq entry on transverter bands: 144, 144.2, 144.23, 144.235.

If filter alignment as I have outlined does not solve your problem, you
may have a microphone that is lacking in response at the higher audio
frequencies, but the MH2 usually has a bit of boost for the highs - you
might want to see if one of the locals near you has an MH2 that you can
compare with.

[Elecraft] K3/100 #137 has arrived in Toronto Canada

2007-12-21 Thread Tony Fegan VE3QF

Factory assembled K3/100 was ordered 1 May 2007.
Received 21 Dec in Toronto Canada.

It was shipped 19 Dec by UPS Worldwide Express and was held up in
customs for a few hours and thus missed its scheduled delivery (20 Dec).
It seems that this customs officer had assumed that VE3QF was a
business and that there should be some duty charged.
I explained to UPS (the broker) that it was a shipment to a private
person and the contents consisted of Amateur radio equipment. I also
quoted a customs tariff number (8527.39.10.00). That may be an old
number but in the end the K3 was cleared.
I did not see any reference to Amateur radio equipment or any
customs declaration form on the box. This could have been removed by
customs but usually a copy is kept with the shipment. I unfortunately
don't have much experience with customs clearance.

I would suggest that the call-sign be put after the name and not on
a separate line. For Canada the key words are Amateur radio equipment.
This means duty free.

The radio was double boxed and arrived in perfect condition. First
impression is very positive and definitely worth the wait. I had good
reports on our 10M net.

My thanks to the Elecraft team. Merry Christmas and a successful New
Year.

[Elecraft] New: K3 Operating Tips web page

2007-12-21 Thread wayne burdick
The operating tips I've been posting to the reflector will be archived
for your reference, here:

  http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_operating_tips.htm

BTW, I'd like to thank Greg Fischer, AB7R, for setting up some of our
K3 pages, including this one and the FAQ. Greg also manages our
firmware issues list and helps out with customer support.

Now if I could just talk him into writing code
