If it has stickers on the computer, the answer is probably no. The only
time that you can do this is when you have a full retail version of XP,
not an OEM one. If you buy pre-installed Windows it is almost certainly
an OEM licenced one, which is at least 50% cheaper than full retail. I
think full retail versions have the licence sticker on the media case,
although I've never seen one.

copy on another computer and get it registered with Microsoft? I have
heard horror stories about registering with Microsoft. I paid for and
own this copy of XP, but can I move it?

You don't own the copy. You own the plastic and metal of the media and
a licence to use the software. If it is an OEM version, which it almost
certainly is, that licence will only allow its use on the original
system, although you may upgrade that system. You are not allowed to
remove the stickers from the case and move them.

Microsoft's business model depends on people continually updating, and
one way of achieving this is to make sure that the copy is obsoleted
when the computer is obsoleted.

the answer is yes. If you mean SSB output sometimes being well below
the TUNE level, the answer is yes. If you mean the power being low on

think you'll capture a good part of the shortwave listener market then too.

[Elecraft] RTC in K2 not work

Hello,

I would like to ask for help as my friend has pb with his RTC in K2 and
I have no idea what happends.

His KAF2 is properly installed and filters works well untill now. At

When he goes to menu and find RTC then trying to turn button for switch
from OFF to ON state but in that case it goes directly to another item

Any idea for him please?

[Elecraft] Vacation tasks ...

Wayne - if it rains on your vacation maybe you can figure out how to stop the
clicky noises I get in my Heil Pro headset on CW. If there is a signal on the
receive frequency (e.g. when chasing a dxpedition, working split) the clicks
are much more obtrusive the louder the on-frequency signal is. Same goes for
background noise the louder the local noise level, the harder it is to
monitor my own CW because of the obtrusive very short duration clicks
Yes, the clicky effects are worse if I turn the AF gain up; they diminsh as I
back the gain off, but achieveng a satisfactory, comfortable compromise is
apparently impossible.
Yes; I did the HAGC mod on #107. Yes; turning on NR helps, but is not an ideal
solution.
Surely I'm not the only one . anyone else notice these clicks ??? And
any suggestions as to which of the many settings I need to play with ?
Or is it a permanent unadvertised "feature" of the K3 ?
Maybe my K3/100 QSK is TOO fast ?

Petr,

After 'RTC' appears in the menu, he must press the EDIT button until
"OFF" is displayed. Then he can rotate the VFO knob (or tap the BAND+

If the indication is "--" instead of ON or OFF, then there is a problem

Hi Glenn,

I currently sell and enclosure for the W1 that may be ordered in 3 different
configurations, depending on how you want to build the W1. An optional tilt
stand can also be purchased for it as well. I externalized the power switch
(included) and recommend putting the battery holder on the back of the board
for ease in changing. The power and com ports are also accessible. Here is
the link to my site: http://w8fgu.home.comcast.net/~w8fgu/enclosures.html

If this interests you, please contact me directly for a shipping quote to
your QTH.

Hope this helps.

I just wanted to add a correction to your list. On Tuesday evening, I wasn't
running a K2/100. I don't have the KPA100. I was only running 10 watts, QRP.

Thanks,
Gary, N7HTS

Mike,
We tried using cans instead of cups for
transdimensional durability, but found that the solder
connections sometimes developed whiskers. These
'sub-strings' caused a lot of near-field instability:
information coming in one ear would leave the other
before it could be processed, or we found ourselves
speaking different things from opposites of our mouths
- very uncomfortable. However, one mode temporarily
produced 'eyes in the back of the head' awareness in
one of the staff which was useful but we have not been
able to duplicate that configuration.

They are of course a side effect of the advanced feline transformation

They don't. They go by the invoice pricing. If it shows the shipping and
handling as separate line items, they subtract that from the total.

Now if you purposefully have the seller alter the invoice to show a lower
price for the item, and I higher price for shipping, then you would be
breaking the law.

I suspect though if the high shipping and handling charges on some eBay
auctions becomes a big problem and the government feels that they are losing
revenue, then they may change the law.

Hi gentelmen

More info

I have been testing my K2 on the power issue.
I have the following findings
It is stabel on low power. I set it to 5 watt, press tune and it is stabel.
turn the power up to 50 watt, and it goes from 42 to 50. stop the tuning,
press tune again and the power is 28 watts and going down to 20. Turn it op
to 50 again, and stop tuning. press tune again after a few seconds and again
is 28 watt and goes down to 20. turn it up again, and it repeats again, so i
keep increasing the power. but if it is on 50 watt is is quit stabel. Then
start transmiting, and the power varies from 40 to 70watt.
never noticed this before as it is the first time I use the radio witn an
amp. But I does not matter if the amp is on or not. works fine on 100 watt

Maybe this helps.

Excellent suggestion. Hopefully you have a dummy load you can use with the
amp to see if you're getting more stable results without your antenna.

The issue that involves tweaking the resistor is one that might cause the
output power to vary a few watts - maybe run between 48 and 53 watts when
set to 50 watts output. That's enough to bother some ops and the resistor
tweaking can immunize that. This sounds like something quite different.

Dick, I think you're getting RF back in to the K2 for it to change that
much. Since it works OK bearfoot.

Re: [Elecraft] Output power on K2 not stabel

2008-04-11 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dick,

Sorry, but that does not help a lot - the operation in TUNE that you
describe in normal. TUNE (with the KPA100) normally controls power at
20 watts. If you enter TUNE and then turn the power control, it will
try to produce the power that is set on the power control knob.

The gain of the power control loop is increased (over the base K2 gain)
when the KPA100 is present and the power control set for greater than 11
watts - so the fact that this problem does not show up at low power is a
not unusual. If the gain of your KPA100 is greater than the average,
you may notice this power control loop oscillation problem.

Try increasing RF Board R98 to see if the power control oscillation
settles down.

Someone just got lucky. I received my Katie Gram for an order place October

31, 2007 with shipping 3 weeks later. Backordered items were KRX3, DVR3 and

I would have accepted delivery if only the KDVR3 and KFLA-1.8K were

So, someone is going to take my place. In the meantime, I continue to use my

[Elecraft] K3 Mod Experience

2008-04-11 Thread Phil & Debbie Salas
My K3 mod kits arrived today (HAGC, and Rcv Isolation). I had purchased a
Circuit Specialists 1A soldering station and the SMD soldering tool for it
($40 and $30 respectively). This is a VERY nice soldering station. And the
free promotional DMM is also very nice. It lets you measure capacitors with
the test probes, meaning you can easily check the value of the CW rise time
capacitor on the board.

My K3 is SN308, shipped on 1/24/08. My K3 had the CW Risetime mod, but not
the HAGC and Rcv isolation mods. I elected to go with the leaded-parts mod
for the HAGC as I didn't want to try to handle those tiny SMD parts. Total
time to do each of these two mods was about one hour. And just for the
record, I have lousy eyesight! But everything went smoothly. Bottom line:
From the time I had the mod package in my hand to the time I closed

everything up and recal'd the receiver S-meter was just under two hours.

tone.

With key down, there is no ac voltage out of pin 4 of the DAC(U8) on the

that U8 is bad, but before I attack this chip, is there anywhere else to look?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - FSK hookup to ACC connector

2008-04-11 Thread David Woolley (E.L)

N2TK wrote:

For FSK, the manual states that pin #1 (FSK IN) in ACC jack has a pull-up
resistor to 5V. So I assume the standard NPN interface from a COM port will
work fine for that.

It has been pointed out to me, off list, that the standard interface
here might not actually be referring to the standard interface of a COM
port, but to a commonly used interface circuit between the COM port and
the transceiver key input, such as given in
 in relation to the
MMTTY software.

If that was what you did mean, the circuit I was referred to is an open
collector NPN buffer with a 1K base resistor. I was going to say that
that circuit would work, but the more I think about it, the less I like
it. The absolute maximum emitter base voltage for this sort of
transistor is typically 5 or 6 volts, and this circuit will try to
exceed it by a good 4 to 5 volts. I guess the junctions zeners and the
resistor limits the current to levels that don't cause damage, but it is
still operating out of its safe operating area. That can be fixed by
putting a diode across the base and emitter. (Alternatively, as a
result of production spreads, many specimens of the transistor may
actually have break down voltages that are high enough not to cause a
problem.)

Also, 1K is far too low a value. To comply with RS232, it needs to be
at least 4K, and assuming the pullup is the internal pullup in a PIC and
and using a 2N as an example, the current gain will be at least 35,
which means that a resistor of several 100K will saturate the device
when driven from an in spec serial port (820K for a standard value,
maybe 470K, for some safety margin).

I still prefer the opto-isolator approach, because it is intrinsically
safer and gives very good RF isolation. With a (Darlington)
opto-isolator, interface the K2 PTT, I used 5.1K resistors, but such
isolators only have current transfer ratios of around unity.

[Elecraft] Low battery on K2 without battery

2008-04-11 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
For some reason the low battery messages keeps poping up on my K2
in the receive mode.
I have the p7 jumper on the internal side, and have tried it on the
external pins, but I still keep getting the low battery message.
On my first K2 I had the battery deal turned off, but don't see anything
in the manual on how to turn it off on this one.
It's drawing 240 ma on receive and the internal volt meter doesn't work
but the power supply voltmeter shows 13 volts.
Any ideas?

[Elecraft] 5-pole filters

2008-04-11 Thread Douglas G. Bonett
I ordered a K3/10 kit and it should arrive in June. I am considering an upgrade
from the stock 2.7 kHz 5-pole filter to the 2.8 kHz 8-pole filter. Several
months ago I read that Elecraft would post the 5-pole filter plots “next week”.
I have seen the filter response tables, which are very helpful, but I would
like to study the actual plots before making an upgrade decision. I have not
been able to access the OH9BH plots. Would someone please post these plots on
the K3 wiki?

Would Elecraft be willing to lend one of their inexpensive 2.7 kHz filters to
some expert K3 owner who has the 2.8 kHz filter? Or, is there any expert KRX3
beta tester who has the 2.8 kHz filter in the main receiver and the 2.7 kHz
filter in the second receiver? I would very much appreciate your subjective
comparison of these two filters.

[Elecraft] Last Chance: K3 Table at Visalia Contest Dinner

2008-04-11 Thread Rick Tavan N6XI
Last chance to sign up for the K3 table. The following nine K3 ops are now
confirmed:

K6KR
N6TR
N6XI
AE6Y
N6RA
N6XG
KR7X
K6XX
W6FVI

A non-K3er friend asked me about a sitting together. If I don't hear from
any other K3ers soon, I'll invite him to join the faithful. Maybe we can
convert him!

Re: [Elecraft] no side tone on K2

2008-04-11 Thread Don Wilhelm

Joe,

The most likely thing is that the sidetone source has been accidently
toggled to U6 - 25.
Enter the menu for ST-L and edit the parameter (press EDIT) - then tap
DISPLAY to toggle between the two sources. Stop when you hear sidetone.

After much backing and resoldering, I finally got my K2 on the air. (The
problems were popped then mismatched finals.) Unfortunately, the side tone has
stopped working, either in setting the tone or level from the menu,
transmitting or in the test mode. I can get power out on key down, just no
tone.

With key down, there is no ac voltage out of pin 4 of the DAC(U8) on the control board or at the drain of Q5. There is 5 V dc on pin 1 of U8. I assume that U8 is bad, but before I attack this chip, is there anywhere else to look?
