[Elecraft] RE : FL-2100Z Swr Issue

2008-05-11 Thread David Walker
Many thanks to all those who have responded to my query about he SWR
issue with my amp. I've had 13 responses of which all have been helpful
and given me food for thought.

I appreciate the use of this reflector for advise on this issue. One of
the things that is valuable about being a part of the elecraft users
groups is being able to get technical advice.

I have accepted a suggestion that several people have made and decided
to choose the path of least resistance and adopt the ATU for my K2 :-)
I am risk adverse and don't fancy putting my fingers into a small box in
which any wire can have 850V active :-)

Dave

[Elecraft] K3 - Impressive display

2008-05-11 Thread Stewart Rolfe

The sun has finally come out in North Wales

I was spending some time in the CQ-M contest with the shack door wide
open and the birds singing in the garden; eventually the sun came round
to shine straight into the shack and I found myself instinctively
leaning back to pull the door to shade the front panel of the K3. I've
never used a radio where direct sunlight doesn't turn the LCD pretty
well invisible and certainly my previous rig, a FT990 was no exception;
so I was amazed to find the K3's display was completely unaffected and
if anything seemed clearer than in normal lighting conditions. The
orange background disappeared but the legends were razor sharp and
distinct, so I could just sit there enjoying the sun and warmth on my
knees while continuing to operate; thinking of buying a kite now and
going /portable on the beach :-).

I've had this radio for nearly 6 months now and I'm still being
surprised and delighted by it..

[Elecraft] K3: Shift behaviour

2008-05-11 Thread Alexandr Kobranov

Hello friends,
want to know if i missed something:

- when on CW mode turning SHIFT to low-end it is going to 0.00 and
then jump to 2.7 and radio is off (no signal like I/F switched off).
It is for BANDWIDTH 2.8kHz and the same for 0.05kHz so bandwidth
independent.

On SSB mode SHIFT is going to 0.4 and stop here, no jump to 2.7.
Latest F/W installed.
There should be some limits based on PITCH settings and bandwith or not?
Tried to look in wiki and nothing about this there.

http://www.zerobeat.net/mediawiki/index.php/Firmware_anomalies_that_are_considered_normal

Maybe it is known, maybe not, maybe it is not normal, maybe yes...
Any comments?

Just a thought while I am fiddling around here.

Are there any plans to have the ATU retune the antenna when on receive like

Just a thought, I'll climb back in my hole down under.

[Elecraft] K3: SSB + CW (Auto CW) and VOX/PTT

2008-05-11 Thread Alexandr Kobranov

Hello,

just tested that in my case if I have AutoCW active (CONFIG:CW WGHT
and tap '1' until you see SSB +CW) there is all the time CW QSK active!
If I am in SSB mode and PTT active (NO VOX) when key is touched TX is
going to be activated.
In CW mode the same - no VOX, no QSK but all the time like QSK active,
no VOX label on display.
There is need to follow up the settings - if PTT is required there
could not be any QSK in any mode.

When Auto CW is off, it seems to be ok - following PTT settings.
Having latest FW and straight key connected to key on rear panel.

Can you please anybody else test this if it is some bug or is time to
reload FW here?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: SSB + CW (Auto CW) and VOX/PTT

2008-05-11 Thread Alexandr Kobranov

Just to clarify what I suppose to be better:

If SSB + CW (Auto CW) active, let it is valid only for SSB mode and on
CW mode settings of PTT (PTT or VOX-QSK semi or full) will be considered.
Then when I am only on CW I do not need to go to SSB -CW to disable
QSK when need PTT only behaviour.
There is no problem with dealys there is problem that in system which
rely on PTT only you can cause some problems in CW mode by touching
the Key as no information about QSK active (caused by SSb +CW
settings) is dispalyed (my feeling).

Re: [Elecraft] K3: SSB + CW (Auto CW) and VOX/PTT

2008-05-11 Thread Alexandr Kobranov
update - sorry for confusion(-s), after some testing I recognized that
no RF is on output, only PTT OUT is active and chain of relays are
clicking
So I am probably wrong concerning relations between AutoCW and PTT CW
mode behaving like QSK mode as no RF is emitted.
It is not real QSK because only SIDETONE, RED TX Led and PTT OUT is
activated.
But still not clear to me why PTT OUT is activated when I am in CW
mode, PTT enabled and touching the Key?
What will be correct - listen Sidetone after touching key but no PTT
OUT active, no TX LED.

That is my conclusion for now, can be changed easily :-))

Re: [Elecraft] K3 cheap mic

2008-05-11 Thread WA4KBD

I keep the headset plugged into the rear mic and headphone jack. In the
menu, I set SPKR+PH to Yes. I'm using an amplified speaker system which has
it's own volume control. When using the headset, I simply turn down the
speake volume. I use a foot switch plugged into the PTT jack on the rear of
the K3.

A couple of days ago, I discovered a very cool way to mute my speakers while
using a headset. This is accomplished simply by tapping the M3 key. The
reason this works is that certain menu functions with yes/no or on/off
parameters will cycle between their yes/no or on/off states simply by
invoking them with a memory key. M1-M4 are handy because all you need do is
tap them once the memory is set.

Here's what you do:

1. Dial up the SPKR+PH item in config.
2. Now, HOLD one of the memory keys, M1-4, to memorize that menu function.
3. Now, whenever you tap the same M key, SPKR+PH will cycle between yes/no.
Your speakers will mute and unmute simply by tapping the M key.

You can do the same with th PF1/PF2 keys but the key must be held down for a
moment accomplish the same result. Enjoy.

[Elecraft] no transmit on K3

2008-05-11 Thread Marin QRP
I'm trying two different mics to transmit with.
One is a Kenwood hand mic from a Kenwood 570D
and the other is a Heil Pro Set Plus with an 8pin
Kenwood mic adapter. I haven't had any luck when even
trying to set up my levels for transmitting. I cannot get any bar
to show up or move on the ALC or Compression when keying down.
I have tried with the compression as high a 30 and the mic gain as high
as 60 but no movement, whether in TX Test or regular TX mode.

I feel like I am forgetting to change one setting somewhere,
if that is what the problem is.

I put the K3 together myself and don't know if something could
have been done wrong there, but after looking again and again
in the manual, I just don't know what else to try.

Any suggestions, even to go and check basic settings will be
appreciated. Please reply offline.

Re: [Elecraft] no transmit on K3

2008-05-11 Thread n4lq
Sometimes one of the front panel connector pins don't line up and that
breaks the mic connection. If you have a computer mic hand, plug it into the
rear panel, change the menu and see if that works. That would be rP.L
Bias...in the menu. This will narrow down the problem.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - paddles works, sk doesn't

2008-05-11 Thread Paul

Anyone have any idea why my paddles work fb when plugged into the K3's
keyer jack, but my straight key doesn't work when plugged into the key jack?

What DOES happen when the hand key is plugged into the [KEY] jack and you
close the key? Anything?

Nothing.

Are you certain that the TIP and SLEEVE of your KEY PLUG are wried to the Key
and that the RING (if using a stereo plug) is NOT attached to anything?

Mono plug

Tom Hammond N0SS

I was originally thinking I might need to make a firmware adjustment
that I somehow missed, but your comment encouraged me to check the
cable with an Ohmmeter.

The tip conductor didn't conduct.

I was using a Mono 1/4 molded plug with wire already attached, which
was cut out of an older m-m 6' shielded patch cord from Radio Shack.

I replaced the cable and it works fine.

No firmware configuration was necessary.

Thanks,

Paul

[Elecraft] no transmit on K3

2008-05-11 Thread Dave G4AON

Rem

With my K3 and a 570D hand mic (MC-43S), I have the following settings:

Mic gain 20 to 30 (depends how loud you talk)
Compression 20
Mic selection FP.H with no bias (when bias is turned on the word bIAS
appears alongside FP.H)
I also have some TX EQ to reduce low frequencies and increase higher
ones, it depends on your voice.

With TX test selected, a monitor audio level of 22, the audio sounds
good and the CMP/ALC metering kicks up nicely on normal speech.

73 Dave, G4AON
K3/100 #80
-

Thanks

[Elecraft] No XMIT on 6 meters

2008-05-11 Thread John
There has been some chatter here lately about 6 meters not working. I
thought I would try and duplicate some of the problems. Well I
couldn't. However, I did find a problem with my K3 #501 on 6 meters.

I don't have power pwr output on 6M. Perhaps I didn't check before,
or maybe I didn't run the 5 watt cal on 6M. So, I ran the cal, all
bands are fine, 5 watts, except 6M, where I get 1W and a ERR TXG msg.
I don't hear much background noise on receive, with an antenna
connected. May be a BP filter issue? The Ops manual says to hit the
service manual, not encouraging. I really don't want to ship the rig
back to Aptos, it's already been sent back once. When it was returned
to me, I was told it met all spec's now. BTW, I haven't had the
cover off the radio since it was returned.

Any ideas out there?

[Elecraft] No XMIT on 6 meters

2008-05-11 Thread Dave G4AON

John

You might want to check at various frequencies across the band, the
problems that required some K3 to be checked for alignment involved 60m
not 6m, if I recall correctly. The problem seems to have been a
difference to do with slight 60m band differences between the USA and
the UK. I am not aware of any specific 6m alignment issues, indeed my K3
is closer to the expected power output levels on 6m than any of the
other band, my calibrated LP-100 gives 119 Watts on 6m when the K3 is
set for 120 Watts.

Have you tried e-mailing K3 Support?

[Fwd: Re: [Elecraft] K3: SSB + CW (Auto CW) and VOX/PTT]

2008-05-11 Thread Alexandr Kobranov

No Doug,
no, this is misunderstanding

I need PTT.
I need PTT only to switch to TX and produce RF by standard external
PTT input.

But when I touch key there is Sidetone, TX LED and PTT OUT activated.
I do not want to activate PTT OUT line (PTT to other part of system)
by touching Key when VOX (QSK) is switched OFF. I want to activete it
when I want to transmit and activated PTT IN (footswitch, computer
control or anything doing PTT) not by touching the key in CW mode
anytime when PTT is selected (K3 IS in PTT mode).

Maybe I am doing some mistake(-s) if somebody can verify will be better.
Change mode to CW
Switch to PTT (no VOX/QSK)
Touch the Key

Is PTT OUT (cinch on rear panel) active? (connected to GND)

Be sure you have disabled VOX in all modes etc., disabled Auto CW and
if by touching of key K3 activates external devices by PTT OUT signal.
That´s it.

Maybe there are some systeme reasons for this but still do not know...
Maybe I am completely out of picture as usually :-)

Thanks for understanding,
lexa -dst-

Alex,

You need to turn OFF PTT and turn ON VOX and all should be well.

update - sorry for confusion(-s), after some testing I recognized
that
no RF is on output, only PTT OUT is active and chain of relays are
  clicking
So I am probably wrong concerning relations between AutoCW and
PTT CW
mode behaving like QSK mode as no RF is emitted.
It is not real QSK because only SIDETONE, RED TX Led and PTT
OUT is
  activated.
But still not clear to me why PTT OUT is activated when I am in CW
mode, PTT enabled and touching the Key?
What will be correct - listen Sidetone after touching key but
no PTT
  OUT active, no TX LED.
That is my conclusion for now, can be changed easily :-))

Just to clarify what I suppose to be better:

If SSB + CW (Auto CW) active, let it is valid only for SSB mode
and on
CW mode settings of PTT (PTT or VOX-QSK semi or full) will be
considered.
Then when I am only on CW I do not need to go to SSB -CW to
disable QSK
   when need PTT only behaviour.
There is no problem with dealys there is problem that in system
which
rely on PTT only you can cause some problems in CW mode by
touching the
Key as no information about QSK active (caused by SSb +CW
settings) is
   dispalyed (my feeling).

   Hello,

just tested that in my case if I have AutoCW active (CONFIG:CW

and tap '1' until y ou see SSB +CW) there is all the time CW
QSK active!
If I am in SSB mode and PTT active (NO VOX) when key is
touched TX is
   going to be activated.
In CW mode the same - no VOX, no QSK but all the time like QSK
active,
   no VOX label on display.
There is need to follow up the settings - if PTT is required
there
could not be any QSK in any mode.
When Auto CW is off, it seems to be ok - following PTT settings.
Having latest FW and straight key connected to key on rear panel.

Can you please anybody else test this if it is some bug or is
time to
   reload FW here?

Yes.

[Elecraft] Computer Speakers

2008-05-11 Thread Dave Jeanne Robertson
Anyone,
I will soon be receiving my K3 and I do have a question.

Normally my computer line out connects to my computer speakers. When I get my
K3 is there a speaker connection on the K3 that will also output audio out from
the computer such as when not using the radio but still using the computer?

Or do I have to get a stereo Y connector at the line out connection on the K3?

Many thanks in advanced.

When I attempted to do the power output calibration there was a problem
on 6m. All other bands were OK.

My setup has an external tuner with a dummy load connected to the BYPASS
output connector on the tuner. Checking the cabling reminded me that
there is low-pass filter in line between the K3 and the tuner. It has a
cut-off frequency of 42 MHz and is 80 dB down at 50 MHz.

I had forgotten about the filter because it is bolted onto the back of
my console - out of sight, out of mind. Hooking the dummy load directly
to the K3 solved the problem. (I normally have 160-10m on ANT1 to the
external tuner, with 6m on ANT2 to its own separate 4-position remote
antenna switch, so the LP filter isn't a problem.)

[Elecraft] Very good radio K3 - #845

2008-05-11 Thread Roland Guidry
I received my K3 Serial #845 factory assembled last Tuesday, May 6 and have
been learning and operating it daily. I downloaded the latest firmware
versions before beginning to use the radio. I ran into two problems that
were resolved easily and have had nothing but success with this radio in all
modes of CW, SSB and RTTY. I have a Microham MicroKeyer II attached to the
radio. I had also ordered the second receiver, but decided to bypass that
for the moment. I will try using this radio on split mode before I decide on
the second receiver for the future.

I am using a Heil PR-40 microphone with the Heil Kenwood adapter, running no
bias of course and Mic Sel = FP.H and TxG VCE = 1.0, Mic Gain = 15 CMP = 0.
Audio reports on this baby have just been fantastic. I only adjusted two
parts of the TX Equalizer, 100 = -16 and 2.40 - +10 for my voice. All other
settings are ZERO. Everyone who knows my voice and some are audiophiles,
agree that the audio is superb. I am getting peak power on SSB that is near
100 watts and it easily drives my ACOM 2000a amplifier. I do not run the
microphone through the MicroKeyer, but run it directly to the front of the
radio.

RTTY was easy to setup with Microkeyer, just had to adjust the pitch control
for 2125 Mark.

CW is very very good. I am an occasional CW operator, but using the 400 hz
roofing filter and using the DSP filter to drop it to as low as 50 hz for
the first time was a blast. No QRM, no Ringing that my ears could tell. Tone
has nice sound to it. My first station worked was in Australia on 80M with a
80m vertical running 100 watts. They gave me a true 57, while I was coping
them 44.

There is practically no QRN source that I can't remove with either the DSP
NB or IF NB. I have had to try both method on some local noise sources to
get the best results. None of that was ever possible with my Pro 3 or Orion
II. And, NR works!

As a previous owner of a Yaesu FT-1000MP, Pro 2, Orion II and a Pro 3, this
is definitely the best radio I have used thus far.

I will post a preview on eHam when I have had the radio for a longer period,
but just using the radio these past days has been a blast. Hope to work you
on the bands. Look for me at Dayton for an eyeball QSO!

[Elecraft] setting pf1 (or 2) to control

2008-05-11 Thread Ron Spencer
Trying to program either of the pf buttons to control xv1 yes/no. Follow the
directions in the manual: select config: xv1 on. Push and hold pf1 until it
says set. Now go back to normal display and push pf1. It flashes the xv1 on
selection but then it goes back to standard vfo display.

To verify I was doing it correctly I tried it with af gain. An interesting
capability I didn't know existed was first time push pf1 with the af gain
programmed it sets it to low. Push again and switches to high. I would like
it to do that with the xv1 selection.

Any ideas?

[Elecraft] K2: Low 8V, and adjusting AGC and S-meter

2008-05-11 Thread TF3KX

Hi:

My K2 #6425 was ordered in February and is now fully operational, with
almost all measurements and checks within limits. The only issue is the
output of the 8V regulator, which is at 7.56V (5.5% down from the nominal
8V). If I am right, this low voltage is the cause for...

a) AGC threshold adjustment: U2 pin 5 voltage only goes up to 3.62V, not
3.80V;
b) S-meter adjustment: Can never get S-meter LED below #2 or above #9 to
turn on.

I had to order some spare parts from Elecraft, and to be safe I asked them
also to send me a tested replacement for the 8V regulator - which is on the
way.

My questions are...
- Wouldn't the low 8V level be the cause of the above symptoms (a) and (b)?
- Any reason I should or should not replace that 8V regulator, anyway?

I had the exact same problem. I replaced the regulator with one that

Good luck.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: Low 8V, and adjusting AGC and S-meter

2008-05-11 Thread Dave Andrus

Kristinn:

In answer to a):

Yes, that is correct. Several of us that have built K2's in recent
times have found that the 8V regulator output is low by as much as 0.5
volts. Replacing it should give you a good chance of seeing higher
voltage, and being able to adjust the AGC threshold to 3.8V. My
regulator output was 7.51 volts, if I recall correctly, and Elecraft
sent me a new one. Interestingly, I looked up the manufacturer's data
sheet for this part, and it is very near, but still within the
manufacturer's tolerance.

I believe that this should also fix b), but I did not experience this
with my unit.

Hi:

My K2 #6425 was ordered in February and is now fully operational, with
almost all measurements and checks within limits. The only issue is
the
output of the 8V regulator, which is at 7.56V (5.5% down from the
nominal

8V). If I am right, this low voltage is the cause for...

a) AGC threshold adjustment: U2 pin 5 voltage only goes up to
3.62V, not

3.80V;
b) S-meter adjustment: Can never get S-meter LED below #2 or above
#9 to

turn on.

I had to order some spare parts from Elecraft, and to be safe I
asked them
also to send me a tested replacement for the 8V regulator - which is
on the

way.

My questions are...
- Wouldn't the low 8V level be the cause of the above symptoms (a)
and (b)?

- Any reason I should or should not replace that 8V regulator, anyway?

Re: [Elecraft] Computer Speakers

2008-05-11 Thread n4lq
NopeAnd a Y connector doesn't work too well either. The low impedance
speaker output of the K3 will swamp the computer's higher impedance output
resulting in weak audio from the computer. A switching arrangement or some
kind of mixer would work. Otherwise you will need separate speakers for your
K3. I'm using a Logitech THX speaker system for both the PC and K3 and am
manually switching between the sources.

Anyone,
I will soon be receiving my K3 and I do have a question.

Normally my computer line out connects to my computer speakers. When I get
my K3 is there a speaker connection on the K3 that will also output audio
out from the computer such as when not using the radio but still using the
computer?

Or do I have to get a stereo Y connector at the line out connection on the
K3?

Many thanks in advanced.

[Elecraft] Receiver distortion

2008-05-11 Thread Gary Gregory
Greetings All,

lately I have noticed that sometimes the main receiver sounds distorted when
signals are not even very strong (S5-7) without having Notch, NR, NB or wide
filter active and AGC is on slow.

I am curious if anyone else has experienced this audio degradation?

I have had a play while this is happening with the width, Hi and Lo cut,
shift and volume but it appears to have little effect. The NB is not used.

Regards,
Gary

Tell us about your speaker system. The K3 has the cleanest receive audio
I've see thusfar.

Re: [Elecraft] Computer Speakers

2008-05-11 Thread Don Wilhelm

Dave,

Just connect a stereo cable between the K3 external speaker jack to the
soundcard line in and see what happens. I use this arrangement all the
time at the workbench (but I use dedicated speakers in the hamshack).
How well it works is dependent on your computer and soundcard. You
could always plug the external speakers directly into the K3, but I
understand that is a bother.

Re: [Elecraft] Very good radio K3 - #845

2008-05-11 Thread Bob K9PAG

Good move on getting a factory assembled radio. Well worth the $250 or so to
get a factory assembled, tested rig. Sure bets waiting for parts, pieces,
and assistance with parameter settings. My #818 has been sitting in my
shack, inoperative, waiting for parts and pieces for over 9 days. My
experience might be the exception but it is not the kind of experience one
wants with an expensive ham radio.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for May 11th 12th, 2008

2008-05-11 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
I am glad I could step outside and listen to the fir trees after that second
net! A couple of you were so loud it was hard to copy because of the smoke
coming out of my ears. I am using different headphones these days. Pat got
them for me for Christmas a while back and they have been hanging on the wall.
I thought I should use them just 'cuz. Well, they work pretty well; heavy but
they are very responsive. These phones do not allow me to push them forward
onto my cheekbones like I could the others. I'll need to put a fuse inline
with them, anyone greater than S9 + 100 dB will blow the link.
Looks like weather is pretty good across the nation. I am frightened for
KL7CW though. He is in Bakersfield, California where it is much too warm. The
jump from Palmer, Alaska to SoCal must be daunting. Good luck Rick! Dale said
he was not coming to Oregon this year but I swear he was in my front yard
running a linear! Sometimes signal strength is not everything. First time he
sent his hail I could not copy because it was 'just too darn loud' (Huey Lewis
line from Back to the Future).

On to the lists before I draw any more ire =

It appears there are quite a few active K3 folks. They seem to work OK, now
for the test of time :) If there are any errors or omissions in the above
lists please bring them to my attention. Since the net began June 7th, 2003
have been 560 vistors for a total of 4682 QNI. I still have not worked DE or
SD on the net. Sure would be nice to get ECN one of those fancy WAS
certificates. It would be kind of special because it would designate all
states worked Elecraft rig to Elecraft rig. Please think about working mobile
while on vacation this summer. Maybe we can pull this off!
   Until next week stay well,
  73,
Kevin. KD5ONS (Net Control Operator 5th Class)
