[Elecraft] And yet even More K2 Distorted TX audio on 10m and 12m only

2008-06-26 Thread Jeff Laughlin
Ok I lied about the full power part. 12m doesn't make squat for power and
10m makes WAY more than it should.

On 10m, with power set to 2 watts, as per the alignment procedure, I measure
7 watts out on my bird. With power set to 10 watts, I measure 18 watts out!!
On 12m, with power set to 10 watts, I measure 3 watts out.

There's something scwooey around here...

[Elecraft] RE: K3 full power strange behaviour

2008-06-26 Thread Dave G4AON
When running ARQ Pactor with my K3, I notice the power level seems to
wander requiring the mic level to be adjusted, this is noticeable as a
change in ALC indication. I suspect those running sound card data modes
may also see a similar variation in ALC levels. Note, I am not running
power levels any higher than 50 Watts, usually 15 - 20 Watts. By
comparison, a TS-480 doesn't vary at all.

Dave, G4AON
K3/100 #80

I also noted this with my K3 last week.
My guess is that this is a burp in the latest
firmware. I tune my amplifier with a string of
dots (abt 30 wpm) and note the bar graph takes
about a second and a half to indicate an accurate
power level...

Anyone else seeing this??

[Elecraft] K2 Distorted TX audio on 10m and 12m only

2008-06-26 Thread Jeff Laughlin
My K2 sounds fine on all bands on all modes, both TX and RX except for 10

modes, LSB, USB, and CW. It puts out full power though. Any ideas?

I'd really like to use this at field day. Of course 12 and 10 probably won't
even be open...

RE: [Elecraft] Optivisor?

2008-06-26 Thread Mike
I'm sure distortion was a bad choice of words; it was not a cheap knock-off.
Field of view was far too short with the 4x for me. The 3x has proven to be
perfectly usable for me, with a much better field of view. The fact that I'm
accustomed to progressives with a high power *may* be a factor here. As I
said, I realize a lot of guys like the 4's.

As an aside, I live less than 8 miles from the Optivisor company.

[Elecraft] Strange behavior

2008-06-26 Thread David N.
Hello all
My K2 has begun to flash back and forth between power reading and frequency.
When the power setting is above 10 watts KPA ON I assume.
When you change the vfo it will flash between power and Freq sometimes.
Also with the power display showing it only reads 68 watts flickering 69 watts.
But it puts out full power. I assume it is in the KPA 100 but the only thing
that I can see that controls the KPA 100 on off is U1 So what does this have to
do with reporting? With KPA Off it operates as suppose to. My K2 is going to be
the cw rig for our club field day. 3A NFL

I have 4's and, as Jerry noted, the allow me to focus down at 4", which I
find a very comfortable working distance for close work.

One of their greatest features (beyond giving your full binocular vision) is
that you can wear eyeglasses under them. So if you have reading glasses you
can wear them underneath to further increase the magnification without
buying additional lenses or changing them. I do that a lot when I'm really
peering at tiny stuff.

FYI - usually the number represents Diopters, which is the unit used
to express the power of a lens. It is the reciprocal of the focal
length expressed in meters.

A lens with a diopter of 10 would enable your eyes to easily focus at
1/10 meter (3.9 inches). One with 5 would work well at 1/5 meter (7.8
inches), etc.

[Elecraft] K3- what a radio!

2008-06-26 Thread ni0c
It's the best radio I've ever owned, and it is all
that I expected over the four month wait period!

Some tips and impressions from building the kit:

1. Right panel feet installation-- definitely use soap,
rather than the twist-on method-- much easier!

2. Front panel installation-- definitely remove that
screw in the corner before pushing the panel home.

3. 2-56 screws-- look for them in the envelope for
the bezel and LCD display cover assembly. There
were just enough to finish the job. Elecraft should
consider tossing in an extra one or two in the spare
hardware envelope.

4. Ignore the instruction that says to download the
latest firmware after you've got your radio assembled.
Turn it on and learn it and enjoy it for a week or so.
It's a fabulous radio even with firmware that's a week
or two old!

Things I especailly like about the radio are:

roofing filter flexibility
low-pitch CW capability
great NB and NR functions that really work
affordability-- savings by building kit, deferring 2nd receiver

I finally upgraded mine to FW 2.10 (beta version) from
the 1.96 that came with the radio. I transferred the
new firmware via a flash drive from my laptop which
has internet service to my radio control and logging
computer which I do not have connected to the internet.

Thanks, Elecraft, for great radio, and to the kind people
on this reflector who have furnished help and advice
when I needed it.

Wow!

I've not seen any noise reduction or noise blanking work this well. As for the
noise blanker I can set here and watch the S-meter go down while the NB builds
the filter, just as Lyle has described it. Amazing!

The NR is much improved on CW. I haven't tried it on SSB yet.

One thing I haven't heard anyone deles mention is the notch filter. I put the
rig on the Spectrum Lab software and observed what the notch filter was doing
shortly after I got the rig (#806) and noticed that when the notch filter is on
auto it males several narrow nulls on the waterfall, but when in the manual
setting it makes a null that seems to me to be too wide and you can't get very
close to the desired signal with it or the desired signal will also be nulled,
which is a problem with CW.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Bill,

Looks good!

As long as you are not going to operate the radio while wrapped in the
wooden sheath, it ought to protect it nicely.

The DSP depends on reasonable airflow around the top and bottom of the
case towards the front for cooling.

As you note, the right side panel must have air for cooling the
regulators -- especially if a second receiver is installed.

The right side panel does need adequate ventilation, Bill. What

Michael - your K3 is living in un-truth. The lawyers
will find you and take your K3. Better hide it or
leave it with me for safe keeping. I will make sure
that nobody gets their hands on it but me. !!!

There are some other "tricks" I have noticed and
enjoyed, but I have been reluctant to mention them for
fear that the coders will close that door!

Note to Wayne, a front panel indication of the
condition (ie. out of band transmit) is enough, no
need to chop the output power. In my mind this goes
for most everything. ;-)

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Field Day Note: QRO/Battery

2008-06-26 Thread Carl Clawson
Don't underestimate the voltage drop in your battery cables.

My old ICOM 735 shipped with a ten-foot #12 battery cable, which I used on
Field Day without thinking. Later I realized that I was losing more than
half a volt in the cable. That's a lot when you're running from batteries
with a rig that ceases to function a little below 12 V. A lot of "12 V" rigs
are spec'ed at 13.8 V +/- 15% (some are even +/- 10%, which hardly qualifies
as "12 V"). You don't have a lot of volts to lose running them on battery.

Now I use two paralleled #10 cords, four feet long, with just a short length
of #12 to the radio. Yeah, it's overkill but it makes me feel better.

So:

1. Kudos to Elecraft for designing a rig that runs down to 11 V!

2. Look up a copper wire table and do the math on your power cables. You
might be surprised. Don't forget that you have two wires in series with the
battery.

[Elecraft] Shipping Costs to Australia

2008-06-26 Thread Johnny Siu

Hello,

My second K3 have just arrived. Elecraft charged me a USPS cost of US$145
whereas the postal mark only indicated a postage of US$125.

Out of my curiosity, I raised this to Lisa who confirmed that the extra US$20
is for handling charge of Elecraft.

[Elecraft] K3 Shipping Costs to Australia

2008-06-26 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Kevin,

The prices of ham gears in Hong Kong are far lower than that in VK. Therefore,
I often help Aussie hams in sourcing their gears from Hong Kong though I am not
a radio dealer.

To my knowledge, postal service is seldom challenged by VK customs. As long as
you declare the items as amateur radio kits and under A$1,000, you have no need
to pay any GST.

One more point - don't send two parcels together in one go. Otherwise, VK
customs will add up the total value of all the parcels and charge you GST
accordingly.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 band module.

2008-06-26 Thread Sandy
RIGHT! I haveso farhave three band cards now. 40/30/20/15 four
band, 80/40 two band, 160/80 two band. IF it EVER opens again, 10 meters
would be nice!

Lately, I have been using my K1 with the T1 external tuner as it's range is
a bit greater than the internal tuner.

I wondered if say an 80-10 meter version would be possible with two "piggy
back" boards sacrificing the internal tuner space?

The K1 can remember settings for 6 bands...

It'll do even better...it stores data for nine bands. The K1 MPU
stores a display calibration adjustment for each ham band that
the K1 MPU allows to be assigned to a filter board. Although
there are only six HF bands provided by Elecraft for the K1
(80/40/30/20/17/15 meters), if one designed filter boards for
the nine bands that the K1 MPU can assign to a filter board
(160/80/40/30/20/17/15/12/10 meters), a band-specific display cal
adjustment will be stored for *each* of those nine bands.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filter Question?

2008-06-26 Thread Mike Kasrich
Mostly I think it is just a consistency thing having all 8 pole or
having all 5 pole. Ive had both in my K-3. There really isnt a
difference between the 2.7 and 2.8. I can hear some slight difference
but It's not significant. Im sure the number crunchers will have
different opinions mine is just based on what I hear in the radio.

I have the 2.8 in now. I decided to splurge. For the K-3 I have right
now Ill stick with 8 poles. The second k-3 on order I may just go with
5 poles.

YMMV

[Elecraft] K3 Filters

2008-06-26 Thread David Robertson
Shane,

You might have gotten many responses but I will throw in mine just in case.

The KBF3 has it's own area where it mounts on both the main and sub receiver.
It does not use one of the filter slots.

Both the main and sub receiver have 5 filter slots each. Just remember to
install the widest filter in the lowest number slot, then each narrower filter
in a higher number slot.

Example:

6 k filter slot 1 or 2
2.7 k filter slot 2 or 3
400 hz slot 4 or 5

If you are getting the FM filter (which I recommend as it is really good for
receiving broadcast AM signals) you have to use only slot one for this filter.

I hope this helps.
