[Elecraft] [K3] Split Operation in contest

2008-07-18 Thread Olivier F5MZN

Hi -

We switched to K3's for our contest station FY5KE, in replacements of
our 20-year old Kenwood TS-850. We are now getting ready our equipment
for the coming contest season. So far so good, we are quite happy with
the K3 which is really a great radio. There is only one detail I would
like to have your opinion about.

From everywhere outside US, we are used to operate split on 40 (and
sometimes on 80 as well), transmitting and also sometimes listening in
the European segment as well (you know, listening 7205 and my
frequency, for example). With our Kenwood radios, we had an external
toggle switch located just near the computer keyboard. This switch was
connected to the ACC3 connector (front panel remote) of the TS-850 in
order to remotely command the TF-SET button. That way, we were able to
easely choose which of the TX or RX frequency to listen. Using such an
external switch, it was not necessary to hold the finger on the TF-SET
button and this was very confortable.

The REV button of the K3 is relatively similar to the TS-850's TF-SET
one, except that it is not possible to transmit when this switch is
pressed. It means that the op must think to release the REV button
before any transmission (and to press it right after the end of the
transmission if he need to listen again his TX frequency). On the other
hand, it is necessary to hold the finger on that button which is not
confortable, especially when operating SOAB.

I wonder if someone around got a way to deal with that problem. Of
course, a the possible solution would be to get the sub-receiver...
which we didn't included in our order!

An easy way would be to have a new entry in the menu in order to
modify the behaviour of the REV button in that manner: a single tap on
the REV button will focus the headphones to the TX frequency. Another
single tap on the REV button will focus back the headphone to the split
frequency (normal split operation). I wonder if that would be possible
to implement such a behaviour in the next firmware.

Thanks in anticipation for your comments,

[Elecraft] DX on 10m

2008-07-18 Thread Julius Fazekas
Dave and all,

10 opened later in the day last Saturday here in Tennessee. EU was very strong
at times. Considering I was running QRP in IARU, I was tickled that most of my
DX QSOs were made one call no repeats.

The antenna was better than some, but not a monster stack, just a 4 element
SteppIR. The openings were just that good.

Too bad there weren't more folks playing there. 15 was good into EU as well
later in the day.

We may be at a minimum, but there are some fun openings if one is looking for
'em.

May catch you on 6 this weekend...

Re: [Elecraft] (K1, KX1, K2, K3): Is the Sun Broken?

2008-07-18 Thread Steve Harvey
snip

Wow, a contrarian view of the solar cycle from a NASA physicist,
standing firm against the growing buzz in lay and academic circles.

Or is it.

Since the recent clarification of Administrator Michael D. Griffin's
heretical view on global warming the number of NASA people who are
willing to take a public position against any aspect of the global
warming dogma are probably fewer than the number of sunspots in July.
I don't think you will be hearing any of them speculating about the
possibility of another Maunder Minimum, however interesting and
informative such speculation would be.

snip

Obviously, the current sunspot cycle, as well as global warming and the
precessing of the poles, is caused by the Bush administration and the big
oil companies. Where is Al Gore when you need him?G

These problems, however, are the least of our worries. Check out the

2008-07-18 Thread Gary D Krause
How many of us that work QRP or even QRO for that matter, have had a station
jump right on top of us because, they couldn't hear our signal? It has
happened to me as I'm sure to many others. I was just thinking about this and
I think I have come up with a solution. We all know that the antenna is the
most important part of the station but, not everyone can erect a one hundred
element monster with 1000dB of gain. So, I figured the next best thing would
be to require that every ham purchase a K2 or K3. Then maybe those that can't
hear anything would suddenly be able to hear what is really going on. What do
you think? ;-)

[Elecraft] Re: K3 sub rx audio, etc.

2008-07-18 Thread wayne burdick

Hi Brian,

Is there a mono option? That is where the sub and main rx audio
appears in both ears?

Not at present, but it's on the list.

If no antenna tuner, must one install the BNC connector?

No. Use of the sub receiver's aux RF input is optional. We'll clarify
this in the assembly manual if necessary.

I don't see ever needing to connect the sub rx antenna to any but the
transmit antenna. The firmware makes one choose either BNC or
antenna tuner. There is no choice for none.

Use ANT=BNC if you don't connect the sub's aux RF input to anything.

I did make sure the ATU was in bypass.

Hi Steve,

All PIN diodes, including those used in the K3's T-R switch, are
susceptible to increasing intermodulation as the applied signal
frequency decreases. We selected diodes that perform very well at low
frequencies, but as a precaution, we designed the T-R switch to have a
high-pass response below 1 MHz. At 500 kHz, the roll-off is around 15
to 20 dB. At 1.5 MHz, the roll-off is only a dB or so. We feel that
this is a good tradeoff.

There's a note about this in the Owner's Manual (in Rev. C, it's on the
right side of page 36). But I'll also add this to the Specifications
page.

[Elecraft] re: VFO fine-coarse tuning

2008-07-18 Thread wayne burdick

Hi Ken (and Bill),

Quantizing the VFO in COARSE mode is on the list for a future firmware
revision. This will eliminate the offset you described.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

I have noticed what you describe below with all versions of firmware.
I have verified that it occurs both on transmit and receive. At the
most you could be 99Hz off of your displayed freq. If you were at say
14.200099 in the fine mode and then switched to coarse display of
142000 you would actually be transmitting and receiving on 14.200099.
The 99Hz will always be there even if you move the VFO. I find this
irritating but since I am aware of it I can work around it. I hope
that it will merit a future update

In addition to Bob's questions, I would be very interested in learning how to

to use
it almost exclusively for 6m, and primarily for 6m EME. It sounds like it
would make
sense to get a preamp for it if one is offered, but the order desk at Elecraft
does
not know about any options to improve the sensitivity of the unit on 6m.
Otherwise,
I will hook up my own external preamp with relays as I have in the past.

I used to recommend LNA TECHNOLOGY as the best provider of 6m preamps, but
since they
have gone out of business, I have been pleased with the units provided by
Hamtronics:

http://www.hamtronics.com/lnk.htm

Since the K3 provides a receive-only line for insertion of a preamp, a simple
inexpensive preamp is all that is required to add sensitivity on 6m.

[Elecraft] K3 RTTY MMTTY, etc

2008-07-18 Thread Nick-WA5BDU
I'd like to figure out how to get on RTTY by noon tomorrow. I'm working
with N1MM and MMTTY at the moment, with HRD and my trusty paddle as 2nd
and 3rd back-ups.

Transmit control -

It looks like the K3 gives the option of having RTS or DTR actuate the
PTT. MMTTY seems to use both, with no choice to use just one. I tried
that method, but with serial port connected, the PTT was asserted at all
times. Tried both DTR - OFF and RTS - OFF in the setup with same
result. (First field is for PTT control and 2nd is for keyed line control.)

Second choice is VOX. I set the K3 for AFSK A, connected line out of
the PC to line in of the K3, turned VOX on, told MMTTY to transmit. No
VOX operation. Plugged phones into the line out jack of the PC and
verified -- yes, good strong RTTY tones being generated. I did try
adjusting the MIC gain, which seems to become a line-in control for this
mode. I also did go to the menu and chose Line In as the MIC input.
What's left?

I guess my third choice would be to use the serial port, have MMTTY send
ACSII data, and the K3 would do the FSK thing. But I'm not sure how I'd
get around my PTT control issues.

Receive -

Seems to be working. No RTTY on at the moment, but when there's a
signal, I see it in the waterfall.

PC / OS-

I'm using a new Vista laptop. I know MMTTY isn't guaranteed to work
with Vista, but I think it's working well enough that I should be able
at least to operate the VOX. The rig control features of HRD are
working fine.

2008-07-18 Thread Nick-WA5BDU

Hi Bob-

No, I had not tried that. It was at zero. I cranked it up to 25 and
still no luck. Did some searches in the nabble archives and saw that it
might need to be higher yet. So I went to 50 and now it keys the VOX.
I have line in mic gain at about 20. Thanks for the suggestion.

[Elecraft] BCB sensitivity [K3]

2008-07-18 Thread Mike Scott
Is sensitivity very low below about 1000khz in the BC band or is it just
me?

Something to keep in mind, there is gigantic difference in the BCB
performance on my K3 depending on what antenna I have it connected to and
the results are counterintuitive. On a BCB station I am listening to at 790
KHZ right now hooked up to a resonant 20M dipole the S reading is 10 over
S9. When I shift to a 40M inverted V the signal drops to S4 with ATU and S3
with ATU in bypass. The difference is gigantic. A resonant 40M antenna seems
to be a particularly bad BCB performer. The 20M dipole has a Balun, the 40M
inverted V does not.

Sometimes the ATU helps and sometimes the ATU hurts signals on the BCB.

MMTTY is pretty primative in this regard. It demands a serial port
dedicated ONLY to control of the radio, and a second port for PTT.

[Elecraft] Re: K3 RTTY MMTTY, etc

2008-07-18 Thread Dave G4AON

Hello Nick

I used to run MMTTY and now run a dedicated external modem and also HRD.
However, I did re-install MMTTY to test it for you. The settings are:

Normal serial cable to K3 (as used for firmware updates, etc.), no
settings for PTT in the K3 menu (PTT-KEY OFF-OFF). I am using DTR/RTS
PTT ticked in MMTTY, Kenwood settings from the drop down menu.

For the actual RTTY keying, I use the dc input via the 15 way D
connector on the K3 with the single transistor keying circuit from the
MMTTY help file. It is found under Prepare for FSK. I have a PC with 8
real serial ports which helps. The K3 is used with DATA FSK D mode. I
do not use PTT from a serial port, the MMTTY program commands the K3 to
TX via a Kenwood serial command.

For HRD, I use audio to/from the sound card via the line in/out on the
K3. Keying is via the serial cable and doesn't require any special
configuration on the K3.

Both of the above just work!

[Elecraft] K1: Frequency Instability w/ KBT1 Installed

2008-07-18 Thread Jon Perelstein
I installed the KTBT1 internal battery at the beginning of June and have had no
problems with the radio -- until tonight.

Tonight, the frequency would jump by 1-20+ KHz without warning. One moment I'd
be on 7044.2Khz and then suddenly I was on 7023.8. It was definitely frequency
change and not just the display. The frequency would sometimes jump back and
sometimes not jump back. Tapping on the radio's case did seem to help, but it
also caused problems. Prior to this, the radio was rock steady with regard to
holding frequency.

After some experimentation, I found that the problem was especially sensitive
to the KBT1 being touched, so I completely removed the KBT1 and put the old
cover back in place. The problem has now completely gone away.

I'm guessing that either one of the KBT1 leads had shifted position and was
interfering with the frequency board, or else that the big hunk of metal that
is the KBT1 was somehow touching or causing interference with one of the
boards. It is curious because the radio has been sitting on my desk for the
last 1-1/2 weeks without having been moved -- and yet when I was carrying it to
different places during Field Day it never gave me a problem.

I've decided to not re-install the KBT1 and instead convert it to an external
battery holder. I already feed the K1 with a PowerPole-mounted input lead, so
my thinking is that I can just put some PowerPoles on the leads of the KBT1 and
attach it to the input line instead of my power supply (i.e., cheap Radio Shack
wallwart) whenever I want to operate off the grid.

Is there any hole in my logic there? Can I successfully feed the KBT1 through
the normal power jack on the back of the radio, or does the KBT1 really require
its own special attachment to the radio through the Aux 12V attach point?

As a second question -- does anybody have any suggestions for an appropriate
enclosure for the KBT1 so that I can carry it around?

Thanks.

Jon

[Elecraft] K1: High Power Reading After Antenna Tuning

2008-07-18 Thread Jon Perelstein
I have an Elecraft W1 wattmeter/swr meter installed outboard of the K1's
antenna jack (i.e., between the antenna jack and the antenna). I have the KAT1
Internal Automatic Antenna Tuner installed.

When I put the radio in tune mode, the W1 shows an appropriately low power
output, and continues to show that low power output until the ATU is finished
tuning. As soon as the ATU is finished tuning, the displayed power on the W1
jumps to about 14 watts and stays there until I take the K1 out of tune mode.
After that, the W1 will show an appropriate power level when I'm transmitting
(4-5 watts, depending on my setting). This happens when I'm on the power mains
or using the internal battery (KBT1). Since I managed to operate for 5 hours
on battery during Field Day, I suspect that I'm getting the proper power out of
the K1 (I had it set to 3 watts for battery operation).

I doubt the 14 watt reading because the power supply I'm using isn't capable of
supplying that kind of power.

Be that as it may, three questions:

1. Is there anything wrong with the K1?

2. What would cause that kind of reading on the W1?

3. Is it anything that would damage the radio?

Thanks

Jon

[Elecraft] Signalink USB/RTTY and K3

2008-07-18 Thread Lee Buller

I've had this working before, but I think there have been some changes in the
software releases that have change one thing.

It seems that I cannot get enough audio to the K3 to drive it to 100 watts. I
have the K3 in AFSK mode when in Data mode. I am driving the rig from the back
input connector.

I have to turn the line in up to 50 or more and then turn up the TX drive on
the Signal Link to get around 80 watts output. I have about 4 to 5 bars on the
ALC, but it seems not wanting to drive to 100 watts output.
