[Elecraft] Fwd: Link---ISS Pass for Thurs. Eve. 9 Oct. off West Coast (and further info)

2008-10-08 Thread Aubrey

http://www.n2yo.com/passes/?s=25544click on this link first

then click on #7 "DRAW"
and see the path and the yellow portion will be
the length of pass that is visible from 92069 zip code

This will be an almost 10 minute visible pass
along the West Coast..It will be one of the
brightest "stars" in the western sky.
It will run from WNW to WSW at around 64 degrees
elevation. Starting around 7:22 and ending around 7:32 pm.
There is a rather bright half moon that might
make some of the pass hard to distinguish.
Yes, there is a variation in the mag (magnitude)
listings for these two separate tracking web
sites but it still should be very visible.

Your kids and/or Grand kids might really enjoy
watching it pass. It will not be very far off the coastline.

---
It keeps me in awe to think of what the space
age has brought forth and to think that there are people up there looking down
at the mass of lights all along the U.S.A. ('s
West Coast) and perhaps wondering how many people down on earth are looking

up to watch them pass by.

Hope some of you find it of interest and
enjoyable and will see this pass or future passes visible in your area.

You can click the following link and then find
the accurate list of passes that will be visible to your area.
It will automatically determine your area from
the IP address of your pc, which will be displayed.

http://www.n2yo.com/

First you can see the immediate position of ISS whenever you click the link.
Then click "5 day predictions with graphics" to see the listing of passes.
Highlighted yellow ones are visible to your area.
Then click on "DRAW" and see the path outlined
for you and the yellow is visible portion to your area.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances

2008-10-08 Thread Joe Planisky

Hi Deni,

I had a bit of resonance at 300 & 310 Hz. There is a screw just below
the speaker grille that holds the chassis stiffener bar to the top
cover. I found that leaving this screw just a tiny bit loose (or
perhaps, not tightening it completely would be a better way of saying
it) completely eliminates all cabinet buzz on my K3.

[Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances

2008-10-08 Thread Phil & Debbie Salas

"I tried various things recommend here on the list and I think cabinet
buzz is no longer an issue. But I still have a bad resonance or other
effect in my built-in speaker itself. In decreasing frequency, it
starts buzzing at around 340 Hz, worse at 330 Hz, slight at 320 Hz, and
then gone. I pretty much can't use the built-in speaker. At moderate
volume levels, even band noise excites those resonances and makes a kind
of pulsing, buzzing noise like rough CW."

Nick - This sounds the way my speaker sounded. Turns out it was a bad
speaker. The way to check this is to remove the speaker from the cabinet
and just hold it while it is plugged in. If it is still distorting, get
Elecraft support to send you another speaker.

I am using the Logitech USB audio interface with absolutely no problems.
Present OS is Vista, but it also worked flawlessly with WinXP. This
"second" sound card allows your Xcvr interface to be separate from the
normal soundcard in the PC. This prevents transmitting warning beeps, other
alarms and the "you-got-mail" junk you occasionally hear on the PSK and RTTY
sections. When you first install it, it becomes the "default" sound system,
which you need to change back, and then select the logitech in your RTTY/PSK
program.

Bought the Logitech "Premium" USB headset which has this interface, just for
this USB interface for only US$39, and occasionally use the headset to
monitor the rig. Need to make an interface for the built in mike.

No antenna no noise - you have something nearby radiating the noise. 360Hz
is the 6th harmonic of the AC power line. Put the rig in the AM mode and
tune up from the broadcast band looking for peaks in noise. It will likely
sound like a buzz on AM, not like what you are hearing but it will be the
main source of what you hear. You will probably find some really strong ones
in the lower freq ranges - then pick one that is loudest and switch off each
breaker in your electrical panel until it goes away - of it does, look for
what is connected to that circuit. If it doesn't, you have a noise source
outside your home.

Good luck.

I'm just going through a similar setup right now. I don't use DXBase,

HRD doesn't do digital modes itself, but it comes with DM780 (as well as
PSK31 Deluxe, but DM780 does PSK31 too), and that interfaces with HRD
for rig-control.

Do I want to use the EMU 0202 to connect the K3 to the PC for HRD?

Sure, if you have it already. I'd expect it to work well. I just bought
one to use with an LP-PAN (on order).

If I do want to use the EMU, what cables do I want to use and
how do I connect them?

You'll need audio connections in both directions (transmit and receive).

Line out on the K3 is a stereo connector, and usually the left channel
is the main receiver. The EMU 0202 has two 1/4 inputs for left and
right. I'm using a 3.5mm stereo -to- 2xRCA cable, then a RCA-to-1/4"
adapter on the input to the EMU 0202.

For transmit, the line in on the K3 is mono 3.5mm. The EMU 0202 has
a 3.5mm stereo, and 2 x 1/4 left/right outputs. I'm using a RCA-to-RCA
cable with a RCA-to-3.5mm adapter on the K3 end and a RCA-to-1/4" on
the EMU end.

Selection was based on availability of cables and adapters in my spares
boxes :)

If the EMU 2nd sound card provides no advantage and I omit
it, what cables

do I need and how do I connect them?

The EMU 0202 might perform better than the internal sound card in your
PeeCee.

With HRD do I need VOX or PTT to control transmit in digital
modes? If so, how do Icable for this?

HRD can key the radio through the serial port. I installed the latest
beta build this morning, plugged in the serial cable, set the K3 for
38400kbps, and it "just works" (thanks, Simon!). DM780 can be configured
to use HRD for keying, after setting up the IP server in HRD (consult
the documentation).

Make sure you use "DATA A" mode, and use the mic gain knob to set the
line out level until the ALC looks right when you're transmitting (it
defaulted to 0 for me).

It seems to be working here - I haven't attempt a QSO yet, but I can
receive PSK31, and the needle on my watt-meter is moving by the right
amount when when I transmit a test :)

Will I be able to run digital modes and DXBase logging software
simultaneously from inside

HRD?

Don't know about that one, as I've never used DXBase. If it needs serial
access to the radio, you might look at LP-Bridge and see if that can
help. Also, google sez:

http://forums.ham-radio.ch/archive/index.php?t-8916.html

which claims the DM780 can forward Qs to DXBase.

Good luck...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances

2008-10-08 Thread Deni F5VJC

Thanks to all who responded to this question.

Having looked into it further it seems I have a combination of cabinet buzz
and a defective speaker.
I removed the top panel of my K3 did tests and found the most bothersome
buzz at 600/610 Hz is still present with the top panel detached.
Checked screws all tight (not too tight) and various other mechanical tweaks
but can't clear it. So I guess I will email Elecraft support about a
possible replacement speaker.

This is a very small annoyance in an otherwise fine radio, and it's just
come to light now because I always used external speakers or headphones
until now, having reduced my K3 to bare bones due to an impending move of
shack, I'm listening to it's internal speaker.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances

2008-10-08 Thread Dale Boresz

Hello Nick,

Sometimes, due to either a manufacturing defect or mechanical shock, the
magnet that surrounds the speaker voice coil will get shifted slightly.
When that happens, the voice coil may come into contact with the magnet
and it can sound pretty bad. Not sure that's what's happening in your
case, but I'd suggest trying a replacement speaker.

I don't have a K3 so the following recommendation may not be relevant,
but I'd also suggest that if you replace the speaker, make a thin felt
gasket that you can place between the speakers frame and the cabinet.
You can probably go to the local fabric store and ask if they have a
small scrap that you can have. Using the gasket should reduce the
likelihood of vibration between the speaker frame and the cabinet.

Haven't followed this entire thread, so apologies if this is a re-hash
of a prior suggestion.

i'm not aware of any bandswitching for any other rig but i found the t1 easy
to remote and trigger retuning via a simple insertion of dc onto my coax
feedline. that has let me place the t1 outside under an oak tree where my

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances

2008-10-08 Thread Nick-WA5BDU
I tried various things recommend here on the list and I think cabinet
buzz is no longer an issue. But I still have a bad resonance or other
effect in my built-in speaker itself. In decreasing frequency, it
starts buzzing at around 340 Hz, worse at 330 Hz, slight at 320 Hz, and
then gone. I pretty much can't use the built-in speaker. At moderate
volume levels, even band noise excites those resonances and makes a kind
of pulsing, buzzing noise like rough CW.

For additional info - I'm not a musical "golden ear", I don't expect
high fidelity out of the built-in speaker, and I'm pretty crazy about
the K3 overall. Yes, I know I should contact support, but I want to get
my facts together and maybe even make some recordings first.

Has anyone found a solution to the cabinet buzz from the K3 internal speaker?

I've not used the internal speaker until recently on my K3 and now find I
have annoying cabinet buzz around 450Hz and 600Hz, not so good for CW!

I haven't tried any damping as yet and just wondered if anyone has managed
to cure this cabinet resonance.

As long as the negative side of the internal battery that is feeding the

is being measured in the K3 during the check, and the open circuit
voltage of the ohmmeter is not more than 3 volts, it should be safe.

Some VOMs used a 9V battery in the resistance circuit and/or tied the

Jim,
Using an old-type VOM is not a good idea because the instrument's input is
fairly low-impedance and can thereby compromise accuracy, especially when
measuring at a high-impedance node. DMMs are ubiquitous and can be purchased
at any Lowe's or Home Depot for around $20 or less. Throwing a little more
money at it gets you more bells and whistles, but it won't be significantly
more accurate.

[Elecraft] Other Elecraft Kits

2008-10-08 Thread Jim Good
While looking at a printed order form, one that had been printed over a year
ago, I am interested in the T1-K ATU (Kit). The basic information states
it is a "miniature ATU for all rigs." The same section of the order form
also lists an assembled ATU and a T1-FT817 Remote Control Adapter, "T1 to
FT-817 18", shielded cable for auto band switching from FT-817 to T1." This
unit appears designed for one specific radio the FT-817. Is there a
comparable unit, or modification to this unit, that will allow auto band
switching using radios from other manufacturers?

The main focus on the order form was, and still is, the K2 that will be
ordered with a few extra items. The K2 would be the basic QRP model with
the SSB and KBT2 options. The "extra" items would include a T1-K, DL1,
BL1,2T-gen, XG1, and consideration of the Buddipole antenna option. The
total of the price then was, and still is, reasonable for what is to be
received.

Thank you.

work either.

DX Atlas does a great job with maps, direction, distance, and gray line info.
It gets frequent use here. Even if I only want the direction and distance to a

Re: [Elecraft] k3 : Split Operation

2008-10-08 Thread Val

To accomplish the same task, the '7800 and '7700 require single
press-and-hold button activations while the K3 requires three presses
(i.e., double press A>B, then a single press on SPLIT). Also, no
combination of activating SPLIT activates the '7800's 2nd receiver --
unless that ability has alluded me in the menu system.

I'm looking forward to "Qick Split" too, but meanwhile there is a tip to
save a precious second when hear "UP". My VFO B is always linked to VFO A
plus 1 kHz, as this is the most common offset. I have only to press "SPLIT"
and I am firing on the DX receiving frequency. Later if needed unlink VFO B
for better tuning.

"The Elecraft K2 also has a low IF design using conventional VCOs which should
result in a good LO noise supression but does not do so well. We had two radios
on the bench, one from 1999 (DJ5IR) and one from 2004 (DJ0QZ). This last one
was tested on 14 MHz and showed better results than the older one on 28 MHz.
You may compare the ARRL test results of the LO noise that Elecraft publishes
on their own website and which is closely within our blocking test result (our
measured -95 dB RX blocking in 20 kHz offset is equivalent to -129 dBc/Hz LO
noise). The high level of TX noise shows that there seem to be design flaws
choosing too low signal levels internally. The AGC threshold is ridiculously
high (subjective impression). I also do not understand why it uses low quality
ladder crystal filters instead of a filter from monolithic duals like other
radios does. Overall it was the worst HF radio in the test "

No, you don't use the large knob to control the KRX3. You said you
wanted to use the large knob to tune the transmit frequency while
listening to your transmit frequency. In that case you use the
KRX3 to listen to the (fixed) DX frequency and tune your transmit
frequency with VFO A and listen to your transmit frequency on the
main receiver. Dual receive - not split.

If you are the DX, set your transmit frequency on VFO B, enable
dual receive and split. Tune the callers in the pile on VFO A.

There is no reason to use the large knob to control the KRX3
since the KRX3 and main receivers are identical.

My preference is to transfer frequency and mode only. Setting mode
should restore the last used filter settings for that mode and (when
VFO IND is implemented) I don't want A->B changing the preamp, AGC, RX
Ant, etc. settings on the subreceiver.

I've never found the automatic frequency offset (Quick Split) feature
useful on any of the other radios. Still, as long as the offset can be
set to zero it is effectively the same.

Sometimes I'd prefer that too; it depends on the type of operating.

The discussion only goes to show that SPLIT behavior needs to be
configurable to suit a wide range of user preferences, and not too
deeply buried in the menu system.

[Elecraft] OT guestion...Help needed for the geography-challenged ham

2008-10-08 Thread STEPHEN W BANKS
Hi Everyone,

Does anyone on the list have suggestions for ways to quickly associate
callsigns, country names, latitude and longitude and similar data? I think
what I'm looking for is a well-permuted index of some kind. Seems like
occasionally I see a post about such a service, but I've lost track of it/them.

Simple English names for country locations for unfamiliar callsigns would be
quite helpful. Even better would be maps depicting the country's whereabouts,
its longitude and latitude, and bearing and distance from my QTH. Frequently
heard prefixes like Gs, Ms, Fs, Ds and other European countries are pretty easy
to remember, as are Central and North American callsigns. But beyond those
locations I get VERY ignorant VERY quickly.

My ProLog Call Master files do a good job of quickly determining beam headings
and distance to a specific ham's QTH; they are fine. But less frequently heard
DX callsigns are hard for me to visualize for beam headings and just general
information about the names and whereabouts of countries, their ham populations
and the like.

What I'm looking for is a way for me to be less geography-challenged. (No
wonder my DXCC tally list is so sparce!) Not sure how I ever made it through
elementary and high school geography classes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks and 73,

Steve Banks

2008-10-08 Thread GM0ELP

Hi Deni,
I found that placing some tape round the chassis metal work that comes in
contact with the top panel completely cured the problem. Certain notes were
causing the top panel to vibrate against the top of chassis (no matter how
tight the screws were) and having the tape between them dampened the effect.

Re: [Elecraft] k3 : Split Operation - update

2008-10-08 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF

according to my rev D1 K3 manual, pg37

VFO B controls the sub’s frequency, and is also the
TX frequency during SPLIT (see details at right).

and 'right' says

SPLIT Mode with the Sub Receiver
During split (SPLIT), VFO A is the receive
frequency and VFO B the transmit frequency. If the
sub receiver is on, you can listen to both receive
and transmit frequencies, making DXing more
convenient. You can set up the sub receiver’s
filtering independently using BSET.

So I think I can't do it, that is use the large knob to control the
KRX3, thereby making tuning into the DX receive frequency easier.

I don't see how you can do that, but not having the KRX3 installed yet
doesn't help.

(Note to self to promise to install after JOTA).

FWIW, the Icom 7700 and 7800 transceivers require a "press-and-hold"
function in order to transfer all data upon commencement of SPLIT. To
accomplish this, the "Quick Split" option must be activated in their
respective system menus. I only bring this up as an example of a competing
"high end" brand SPLIT procedure. A similar "Quick Split" function as a
menu option in the K3 would be a welcome addition.

To accomplish the same task, the '7800 and '7700 require single
press-and-hold button activations while the K3 requires three presses (i.e.,
double press A>B, then a single press on SPLIT). Also, no combination of
activating SPLIT activates the '7800's 2nd receiver -- unless that ability
has alluded me in the menu system.

Re: [Elecraft] k3 : Split Operation

2008-10-08 Thread alsopb

Amen. Except for the stereo part so us non-lobotomized people can still use
mono audio. (Like we have two ears to hear with for good reasons)

Looked at the schematic for the audio output. Earphone output is coupled
from the IC via caps only-no series resistors. I was considering wiring the
two together (outside the box) to get mono audio when the sub rx engaged.

Don't know what impact that would have. Each amp apparently can drive 16
ohms but not sure about everything else being OK.

[Elecraft] [K3] Inexpensive SDR for K3 panoramic display?

2008-10-08 Thread Julian, G4ILO

I just ran across this web page http://zao.jp/radio/sft66db2/ describing an
SDR kit that can be purchased for $20 from Japan. As standard it covers 40m
but you can get a custom center frequency for an extra $10. It uses no SMD
parts.

Would this be suitable for the IF output of the K3? What center frequency
would you need?

It's certainly high time for the "auto pileup split" option that most
other high-end rigs have had for years.

If this option is selected, a single press on the SPLIT button would:

1. Activate the sub-rx in stereo mode

2. Clone *all* of the main rx settings to the sub-rx (if identical
roofing filters are not available in the sub-rx, use the next one wider)

3. Shift VFO B to a user-programed frequency offset from VFO A.

Another useful option would be steps 1 and 2 only; or of course none of
the above.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances

2008-10-08 Thread Steef PA2A

Deni,

I have used two nuts on each mounting screw. The first nut is very loose,
and the second nut is tight against the other one. The screws can be rotated
by hand. Two nuts are needed to prevent them from falling into the rig.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Speaker cabinet resonances

Has anyone found a solution to the cabinet buzz from the K3 internal
speaker?

I've not used the internal speaker until recently on my K3 and now find I
have annoying cabinet buzz around 450Hz and 600Hz, not so good for CW!

I haven't tried any damping as yet and just wondered if anyone has managed
to cure this cabinet resonance.
