But to be fair all FTDX-9000 owners are getting a very extensive free
hardware and software upgrade to the FTDX-9000PEP version. Initial reports I
have read state a 'night and day' difference.

I like the FTDX-9000 tuning dial a lot - nice and big and easy to find,
ideal for the terminally bewildered. :-)

Are you sure? The FTDX-9000 is a monster radio - you'll need a fleet of
mules and support staff, failing that your very own Marine corp.

For portable the K3's the winner - you can lift the radio without ending up
in hospital.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] [KRC2]

2009-01-23 Thread AD6XY

Yes.

Use the auxbus connection rather than RS232. You can also use the band out
lines with pull ups.

If you have a transverter, do not loop the signals besides auxbus through
the KRC2. The KRC2 loads the K3 on and Key signals too much.

The KRC2 does not understand 6m, at least my version with the accessibility
firmware does not. 6m will appear as an undefined band, which happens to
correspond to 160m. I am sure Elecraft are working on new KRC2 firmware.

I have just noticed the new firmware is now available for download. Version
1.5. The KRC2 can now map 6m to 60m or 10m. This effectively means you have
a choice of which HF band to work as 6m. To select this you need to use an
invisible feature in the menu for the KRC2 on the K3. Press Button 1 (A/B,
1, B.SET) on the K3 to toggle 6m being mapped to 10m or 60m.

Note to Elecraft: Would it not have been lot more useful to equate 6m to one
of the ACC or XV lines?

Re: [Elecraft] New K3

2009-01-23 Thread Lyle Johnson
Mic gain should NEVER have any influence on Vox gain.

Mic Gain should always be adjusted to provide 4+ bars of ALC
indication on the K3. This indicates sufficient audio level for proper
operation of the transmitter, including VOX, CMP, AM modulation and FM
deviation among other things.

The VOX system gets its audio signal after the Mic amplifier, so this
setting also normalizes the VOX system. Thus, one VOX setting is all
that is required no matter which audio source (FP MIC, RP MIC, LINE IN)
or microphone you are using.

If VOX Gain was not taken after applying Mic Gain, you'd have to adjust
Mic Gain *and* VOX gain every time you used a different microphone or
other transmit audio source. We have many users who routinely use
different microphones on their K3s, so normalizing the VOX system gain
was a deliberate system design decision.

Perhaps for the same kind of reasons people use a DX Cluster instead of
tuning round the bands and listening.

CW will always have the unique advantage that it can be copied without
computer assistance, but it is still a digital mode, and if the fact that it
can be sent and received using a computer makes more people use the mode, I
don't think that's a bad thing.

[Elecraft] Rose Kopp's Covers

2009-01-23 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
My K3 carry case just arrived and to use my American cousin's phase -
Boy, Oh Boy!
Rose does really great work and you can see everything is made with
loving care.
My case is fantastic and I may not feel the need for the extremely
cheap and not particularly suited, flight case I purchased last year.
Rose's case is very well padded and protective and the pockets are
well thought out too.

There is a link to Rose's site at the bottom of the Elecraft home page.

No relationship, just a very satisfied owner of a K3 cover, HexKey
cover and now a K3 carry case :)

Re: [Elecraft] Rose Kopp's Covers

I took my K3 on a trip to Australia over the holidays. It was the first
time I had a chance to use my Rose Kopp K3 case. I put it all into a
small backpack which also contained the power supply, cables and etc.
for the radio.

It worked very well, the radio was undamaged -- and the case got plenty
of exercise as I removed the radio for the airplane security people to
examine at checkpoint... Between Seattle and Perth there are plenty of
checkpoints!

Wish I could've packed a few sunspots in there as well, though...

Yes, it is a tight fit with those many pins, but it will go on, and it

To remove it, 'wiggle' the ends of the boards alternately so it is

It requires less force after 2 or 3 times.

Re: [Elecraft] FT9000 vs the K3?

2009-01-23 Thread Johnny Siu
Hi OM,

First of all, you should ask this question both in FTDX9000 and K3 mail
reflectors.  I believe you will get different answers.

For FTDX9000, you have to look for the latest version with PEP modification..
Otherwise, older version will disappoint you for sure and cannot be compared
with K3 in any aspects.

Ok, back to your question.  K3 is excellent in its performance and
specifications, good for both station and portable operation.  However, if you
look for operation convenience, you may look for a bigger rig with bigger size
+ 200w + internal power supply unit.  This will be up to your personal
preference.

One thing, I would like to point out that the price of a full option (adding up
every bits) K3 is high end as well.  Of course, K3 will give you the full
liberty to choose what options you would like.

If you have any question, please contact me OFF the list.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Test Equipment

2009-01-23 Thread Phil Debbie Salas
Not sure what you plan on using it for, but you might just be happy with your
antenna analyzer output. Antenna analyzers I've looked at (MFJ-259B, AIM4170B,
AA-200) have a pretty well regulated RF output level across their full range.
The MFJ-259B and AA-200 have 2Vp-p output levels, and the AIM-4170B has about a
20mVp-p output level. The MFJ-259B drifts around a lot, and needs to be run
from a fixed voltage external power supply for best frequency stability after
warm-up. The AIM4170B and AA-200 are synthesized and let you sweep as well.
The AIM4170B even lets you zero its accuracy to WWV. Then all you need are
some step- and/or fixed-attenuators to get the level to where you want it. I'm
sure that the phase noise isn't HP-quality, but you can do a lot of normal
ham-stuff. I use the high level outputs with an oscilloscope for filter work.

[Elecraft] K3 Filter Plots

2009-01-23 Thread ni0c
I finally got around to downloading and trying KS7D Mike's
K3 Filter Tools program.

I had previously measured the response of one of my filters
by manually sweeping the K3 VFO across the XG-2's
50 microvolt signal and writing down the AFV outputs
from the K3 display. Then I discovered that I had forgotten
to turn off the AGC, and never bothered to repeat the
measurements.

Now, with Mike's excellent program, I have some nice
plots of my K3 filter responses, with and without the
effects of the DSP filters. I have the XG-2 connected
to one of the antenna inputs of my KD9SV receive
antenna box, so I can switch it into the K3 without
changing any cables.

Nice work, Mike!

Re: [Elecraft] Proper cable for signal link to go with K3

2009-01-23 Thread N8XPQ

What are you planning on using the Signalink for? I don't know that it would
do anything more than the already existing one that is included in the K3.
If you do want to use the Signalink however, you will need the 8 pin Kenwood
cable and then just setup the header inside the Signalink accordingly.

Best of luck,

Humans use lexicographical and semantic clues to fill in dropped CW
characters, and computers can do the same. But this goes way beyond the
simple signal processing used in, say, the K3's present CW decoder or
the one used in HRD. (I studied natural language recognition in college
and was anxious to play with either neural networks or traditional AI
methods as the foundation for CW decoding, but my other classes got in
 the way :)

One idea from the early days of AI is the so-called blackboard model.
Imagine a garbled sentence on a blackboard, with various experts
offering their opinions about what each letter and word is based on
their specialized knowledge of word morphology, letter frequency,
syntax, semantics, etc. You weigh these opinions based on degree of
confidence, and once there's enough evidence for a letter or word, you
fill it in, which in turn offers additional information to the
highest-level expert, who might be considering the actual meaning of a
phrase. His predictions can then strengthen the evidence for lower
level symbols, and so on. Such methods are very algorithm-intensive,
but might be useful for some aspects of CW stream parsing.

A neural network could handle this, too, and has the advantage of
self-organization. This is how I'd approach it (assuming unlimited free
time--not!). You could use any of several different types of networks
that have been proven successful at NLP (natural language processing).

For example, you might take the incoming CW, break it into samples (say
a few samples per bit at the highest code speed to be processed), shift
the serial data representing 5 to 20 letters into a serial-to-parallel
shift register, then feed the parallel data to the network's inputs. Or
you could use a network with internal feedback (memory), with just one
input, which itself could be fuzzy (the analog voltage from an
envelope detector) or digital (0 or 1 depending on the output of a
comparator, looking at the CW stream). The output might be a parallel
binary word, perhaps ASCII, or a single output with multiple levels,
where the voltage itself represents a symbol.

To make this work, you need at least three things: an input
representation that provides adequate context (e.g., if you want to
decode a letter, the input should contain at least a few letters on
either side of the target); a sufficiently complex network; and a large
corpus of clean text with which to train the network (probably
thousands of words, drawn from actual on-air content).

One classic method of training the network involves placing known-good
signals at the input, then comparing the desired outputs to the actual
outputs, and back-propagating the resulting error through the
network--from outputs to hidden layers to inputs--so that the network's
nodes gradually acquire the proper weights. Once the network has been
trained to the point that it perfectly copies clean CW, you can then
present it with a noisy signal stream. A well-designed network would be
able to correct dropped CW elements or even letters if its internal
representation is highly evolved. The network will have learned
language-specific rules, and you don't have to know how it works,
anymore than you know how your own brain does it.

The actual implementation is left as an exercise for the reader. If you
come up with an algorithm written in 'C', let me know and I'll try to
port it to the K3's PIC.

Sounds good, Wayne. When can you have it done? Upper right hand button
 would be my choice.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] [KRC2]

2009-01-23 Thread Jack Brindle
While the use of the AuxBus connection is preferred for K3-KRC2
communications, it does not carry information needed by the KRC2ACC to
announce radio status. For this the KRC2 needs to be connected to the
radio using the serial port. To get full functionality from the
KRC2ACC here, which include radio change CW announcements, band
switching and ACC control from the radio, both serial port and AuxBus
need to be connected. And don't forget that the serial port needs to
be running at 4800 baud for all KRC2/KRC2ACC firmware versions prior
to V1.5.

The V1.5 firmware adds recognition of 6 meters from the K3, and new
microcontrollers from the factory have the bandmaps set to output the
6m selection on the XV1 pins. Users upgrading from earlier firmware
versions will need to use the configuration tool to remap their
bandmaps to enable this selection. Unfortunately there appears to be a
problem with the KRC2 configuration tool communicating with the KRC2
which currently prohibits this. We are investigating the problem and
potential fixes.

Anyone contemplating use of the KRC2 or KRC2ACC with their K3 should
download and read the KRC2 manual, revision C from the Elecraft
website, Manuals Downloads page. It has a revised section on
connecting the KRC2 with various radios including the K3.

I have just noticed the new firmware is now available for download.
Version
1.5. The KRC2 can now map 6m to 60m or 10m. This effectively means
you have
a choice of which HF band to work as 6m. To select this you need to
use an

Note to Elecraft: Would it not have been lot more useful to equate

of the ACC or XV lines?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT2 bridge null adj.

2009-01-23 Thread Don Wilhelm
Allan,

Do you actually have power flowing through the KAT2? Power is necessary
to generate voltage at the diodes D1 and D2 cathodes.
If you can temporarily connect an external wattmeter between the KAT2
and the dummy load, see if power is getting through.
Once you determine that there is power flowing out of the KAT2, remove
the external wattmeter before attempting to set C55 to its final setting.

If you do have power flowing and still have a display of 000, be certain
you have the potentiometers set to full clockwise (max rotation). Check
the orientation of D1 and D2 and look for soldering problems.
Measure the DC voltage at the wiper of R2 - If you have voltage at the
wiper of R2, but still a zero display there is a problem between R2 and
pin 4 of U1.

Re: [Elecraft] HRD cw copy

2009-01-23 Thread Gary NL7Y

I've used the CW decoder ring function on my K3 a few times, but that's not
why I bought the rig. Good code, with a likewise good S/N ratio, yields good
machine copy. So does my brain to some extent. The spoilers are those ops
that send CW in a continuous unbroken stream, and high noise levels relative
to the CW signal.

The former apparently like sending a stream via a key, or more likely a
keyboard, and hopefully there's a very experienced op or PC program at the
other end to make sense of it all. Some folks talk that way as well.

The challenge in a high noise environment is the ability to set the signal
threshold just above the noise to prevent the generation of random
extraterrestrial code = E's and T's. Yes I use and peak the K3's noise
blankers, and sometimes the NR with a wide filter, but it's those brief
noise pops that bleed through that ruin the CW soup. Somehow improving that
aspect will improve the machine copy I believe.

I would love one as well but only a small number of kits or PCBs were made
and they were snapped up in 2002 when the project was developed. As you can
see from the website http://www.qsl.net/ea3blq/download_ang.htm this project
has for some time been considered obsolete.

Sadly Pauli EA3BLQ the designer became a silent key in 2005. He was working
on an improved interface which may well have become a kit once completed,
but no-one has taken on the task of finishing it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KDVR Problem errasing unwanted M1-M4 recordings

2009-01-23 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
To completely erase your transmit message:

Tap REC

Tap the Memory you want to erase.

Immediately REC again to stop.

That works because starting a new recording in a memory location completely
eliminates whatever was in that location. A fraction of a second of
recording effectively erases all 16 seconds because the playback stops
automatically at the end of the recording.

I don't believe there's a way to completely erase the Received audio
recording other than by recording over the whole 90 seconds.

You may look on my webpage www.w3fpr.com to see the original article.

It's worth mentioning that if you have the KAF2 module you can take off
fixed level audio from there via a capacitor at adequate level to drive a
sound card. I can dig out the schematic if anyone wants to know the exact
take-off point but the details can probably be found by searching the

[Elecraft] T Shirt

2009-01-23 Thread Phil LaMarche
Every time wear my Flex 5000 T shirt in front of the K3, it fails. Only
the LP Pan SDR software is happy.

I also vote for the golf shirt.

2009-01-23 Thread Rich Ardolino
True, golf shirts with pockets are nicer, but usually more expensive
than tee shirts..but tee shirts also can be obtained with front
pockets (I have several but plain without any logo)how about doing
both? The golf shirts for attending functions such as dinners, club
meetings, etc...and tee shirts for hamfests, field day, etc. I'd buy
a couple of each.

Concise still makes slide rules and puts logos on them:

[Elecraft] mixed roofing filters for diversity

2009-01-23 Thread Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-655-8604
The question that came into my head late last night:
Can I mix 8-pole filters for diversity reception?

If I have a 250 Hz filter and a 400 Hz in my subRX can I do diversity
reception using that combination? What about a 2.1kHz and a 1.8kHz?

Doug,

My apologies, but this actually will *not* work in all cases. In some
modes, if the automatically-selected crystal filter is wider than will
fit above the carrier (Fc), then the I.F., 1st LO, and BFO may all end
up shifted to compensate. Thus the two sythesizers will not be on
exactly the same frequency, and a phase offset is possible.

Using your 400 and 250 Hz filters as an example: If your sidetone pitch
were say 500 or 600 Hz and you had no passband SHIFT in effect, both
synths would be set at the same frequency. But if you used a much lower
sidetone pitch (say 300 Hz), the nominal position of the 400 Hz filter
(but not the 250 Hz filter) might be shifted slightly upward, moving
the synths apart, even though the perceived receive pitch is identical.
This could produce a phase offset.

So allow me to humbly retract my claim and suggest that all filters
involved in diversity RX should, ideally, have matched bandwidths. In
addition to eliminating phase offset in situations like I described, it
will result in nearly identical close-in dynamic range performance for
both receivers. Having a wide filter on just one of the receivers might
leave it open to adjacent signals, detracting from the 'pure'
experience of diversity mode that I'd like you to have ;)

Thanks, Lyle (KK7P) for catching this.

Wayne

Re: [Elecraft] On The Appalachian Trail again

2009-01-23 Thread Ron Polityka
Hello,

Today was a very enjoyable day out on the Appalachian Trail. I parked my
car around 17:25 UTC and hiked into one of my favorite operating locations
in PA. The trail was covered in 4 of snow with another 2 of ice under the
snow. So it was a little slippery on the AT today.

I arrived at my location and setup my portable vertical. I had a sked with
Carter de N3AO in VA. I was not sure if we were going to make the contact.
Carter was my first QSO back in March of 2000 on the AT. So I thought that
the first 1k QSO's went so well I needed to have Carter as 1,001 for the
next 1K.

I got on 40m and called Carter, to my surprise I heard the call WB3AAL de
N3AO. This was a Great Way to start out the 2009 season out on the trail.

I had a good day meeting new people and talking to some old friends. The
following is my log from the day.

40m Carter de N3AO in VA
40m John de W2YBN in NC
20m Roger de KA9UDA in CA Wow the band was open.
30m Allan de K7GT in OR
40m Jim de VE3DJX in Ontario
40m Dale de W4OP in NC
40m Stu de WD4LZC in KY
40m Aaron de N9SKN in IL
40m Allen de WA8IWK in MI
40m Bob de K8JPM in OH

The bands were not it bad shape, there was some QSB but over all they were
is good shape. Around 20:00 UTC I was trying to work a couple of German
stations that were on the frequency near me. The one station heard me but
just could not pull me out of the noise.

The wx started out in the mid 40's with the sun shining and the wind
blowing. When the cloudy rolled in the temperature went down to the low
40's. It was still a very nice day to be out on the trail.

Thanks to the guys that worked me and to those that tried to work me, this
is always another day.

72 and Thanks,

Hi,

And how about this...

I reckon a hidden metal wire, with a coax connector, and banana plug (for
counterpoise) built into the shirt.

Medium to small sizes will load 40 to 10m, while the L loads 160m to 10m.

Portable, any polarisation. A Stealth antenna

Suggest that used for QRP only

Use at high power at your own risk ! :P

Mmmm. Its such a crazy idea maybe I should patent it...!

[Elecraft] Elecraft QSO party

A few years ago in March there was an Elecraft QSO party.
With my K1 I contacted many other Elecraft owners at that time. I also
contacted N6KR and WA6HHQ at that time. I believe that the result was a boost
to the K1's Mojo.
I now have a K3 which is jealous of the Mojo that the K1 has and #696 is
requesting a chance to QSO N6KR and WA6HHQ to obtain an improved Mojo status.

It would be nice to have an Elecraft QSO party again.

[Elecraft] KAT2 and CALS

2009-01-23 Thread Phillip Heller
So I've completed the KAT2, so far so good.

I get C55 to 003 +/- 2 (bounces back and forth). R1 set per DL1
calculation, R2 set with matching wiper resistance.

CALS reports 1:1 on 80 and 40, though from 30 through 10 it reports
from 1.1:1 to 1.9:1 respectively.

The documentation says not to expect 1.0:1 on the higher bands, though
1.9:1 does seem pretty high.

Any ideas?

[Elecraft] For Sale K3

2009-01-23 Thread Don Rasmussen
this is more radio than I care to deal with.

That's why I sold my Drake C Line in 1978, the performance
gain and cost didn't seem worth all the adjusting I
needed to do each QSY. So I bought a TS520 and a KW.

I'd like to think that after the K3 has been configured
it would be as easy to use as a TS440 but for some
maybe not so much.

It's taken me a year of experimenting to get K3
dialed in better than my previous classic HF's
(one K3 better than the best points of each),
but I had time to do that and the old radios to
fall back on in the interim. ;-)

I have written in my manual the complete
configuration and the radio seems simple
enough to operate.

Good luck with the sale, you picked a good place
to make your post!
