[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (3/22/09)

2009-03-22 Thread Phil and Christina
We had a good turn-out for the SSB net today (1800Z) on 14.316 MHz,
including Eric, WA6HHQ, and Don, W3FPR. Most of the signals were good to
net control, but some stations just can't hear each other. WH6S, Richard,
checked in from Hawaii with a strong signal on the back of my beam.

We had good discussions about distortion/feedback and the indicated mods for
the K3. There was also some discussion about an upcoming revised DSP PCB
that will help with low frequency audio response. Eric was there to
enlighten us. We ran about 34 minutes today. The net control station,
NS7P, will not be available to do the net next Sunday. We are looking for a
volunteer. It isn't difficult as long as you are positioned to hear most of
the country and have a reasonably strong signal. Feel free to put your name
forward.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PSK31 Data Mode and ESSB

2009-03-22 Thread Bill Strong

I am in agreement with all of the above about the narrow filter capabilities
of the K3 which I considered a given when I made my original post. I have
also considered the panadapter solution but that would complicate matters to
a degree. I probably live in a quieter radio environment than many hams and
am able to use a wide waterfall without much problem.

Strong clean signals are not a problem if I cut back on the RF gain. The
fact is that in my style of operating I point and click probably 98% of the
time. I like being able to see the activity around me and being able to plan
my next move. DM780 can read signals that rub up against each other if they
are clean signals.

For the other 2% I move to the QSO window where I can center the signal in
the passband and apply narrow filters; however, this does not help much with
the usual problems of splatter/IMD distortions that are usually the reason
that I move to the QSO window. One of the challenges I face continually is
the W1AW code practice on 80M which distorts the entire waterfall, filters
or not.

It is interesting to me that a few months ago I was 100% CW but now am 100%
keyboard digital. I was about to quit altogether because my fist would lose
control after about 10 minutes secondary to carpal tunnel syndrome. Then I
discovered PSK31. I have not heard the audio on my radio in weeks. It is all
visual now.

I do appreciate all the comments.

When I listen to stronger stations (more volume) it sounds like "clouds with
a silver line" where the silver line is a very distorted high frequency
product of the signal I'm listening to.

It's annoying and tiring. What can it be? Has this something to do with the
AF distortion in the K3 (SN0812 and SN2185, FW 2.78 / D1 1.98, D2 1.98 and
both the same effect) as was discussed earlier on the reflector.

Absolutely! I've been playing with an RFSpace SDR-IQ and a beta
version of Spectravue. It provides panadapter and waterfall that
can be set anywhere from 1 to 190 KHz wide ... clicking on it will
tune the K3 to put the narrow filters in the right place. N8LP's
LP-Pan and PowerSDR should also be able to provide the same
capability.

SDR-IQ and SpectraVue work very well with microHAM Router since
SpectraVue's new external panadapter function can use Router's
2nd CAT port to control the K3 at the same time as a logger and
digital mode package like DXLab Suite or HRD/DM780.

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 Spring Tune Up Update

2009-03-22 Thread Jack Regan
This update represents a more accurate determination of the power output AND
an adjustment of the KX1 so it would reflect these new, accurate power
measurements.

The DL1 was used to determine the power output. Some initial confusion
occured becasue the DL1's formula for calculating power is not correct!

Many thanks to Don Wilhelm for helping sort this out! He has been
responding with detailed, accurate and elegant suggestions re: what is going
on.

The DL1 manual formula is...

P(watts)=((V(volts)x1.414)+0.15))2/50

Three things are going on here. The TP1 is connected to the 25 ohm output of
the resistor chain, the diode correction is not part of the rms correction
and the value of the diode is not as accurate as it could be.

Don's formula is...

P(watts)=((V(volts)+diode drop))2/25

In his note to me re: this he "left the derivation to the student" and this
is the formula I came up with.

P(watts)=((V(volts)+diode drop))x 1.414))2/50

When my formula produced a result different than Don's (by a very small
positive amount) I jumped to the conclusion that Don's formula was quick and
easy ballpark technique! Wrong!

The difference in our figures was that Don used the square root of two
whereas I used the "standard" approximation 1.414!

I will follow Don's lead and leave the derivation to the student! If you
email me I will send you a copy of Don's math!!! Very simple and elegant!

To continue...

I measured my diode drop and found it to be .330mv so the formula for my DL1
is

P(watts)=((V(volts)+0.33))2/25 or

P(watts)=((V(volts)+0.33))x (sq. root of 2))2/50

Taking accurate measurements and finding (as previously posted) that the KX1
was showing too high an output I took Don's advice and redid the C9 and the
Forward Power adjustments on the KX1.

After adjusting the KX1 to show the same readings as the DL1 I now have the
following baseline figures on the KX1 with 12VDC(DISP:BAT).

FREQ TP1 VDC TP1 WATTS KX1 WATTS KX1 SWR

 3.550 7.84 2.602.6 1.0

 7.040 7.34 2.302.3 1.0

10.120 8.45 3.253.24-3.26 1.0

14.050 7.03 2.192.201.0

With the new baseline the agenda has changed.

1. If in fact these outputs are significantly low then correct them thru
adjustments, not modifications. They are higher than the 9 VDC specs
but are they
far enough below the 12VDC specs to bother with. I'll do some reading
and research
and then decide. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.

2.Explore the possibility of increasing the power output to a full 5
watts.
Don has pointed out the fact that more than just the oscillator, final
rf
transistor and toroids are involved in putting out more than 4 watts.
Perhaps an
out board power amp using the KX1 as a VFO would be the way to go!
QST has had several
articles on power amp construction lately!

3.Understand why the Scope and the DL1 are not showing the same results.

4.Get the scope to match the DL1.

Again, just for the record, the KX1 is working on all bands.

Jack AE6GC

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PSK31 Data Mode and ESSB

2009-03-22 Thread Erik N Basilier
I agree with Jim, and not just w.r.t. invading contesters but other PSK31
stations as well. The wider the waterfall, the greater the chance that
another
station within it is stronger than the wanted station, and adversely affects
reception through receiver AGC action. The architecture with an AGC-using
radio producing audio that goes into a soundcard is a bit of a dead end,
the ultimate death of which is postponed by myths that everything will be
OK as long as nobody uses more than 20-30 W. Manual gain control
helps of course, but somewhat defeats the convenience of click-to-tune.
A better approach is to set the K3 bandwidth very narrow, and use
a panadapter to produce a waterfall that is independent of the real
receive bandwidth (and which can thus be much wider than any of the
K3 roofing filters).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Made in January

2009-03-22 Thread Dick Dievendorff
You might need to enable the AutoTuner option using the K3 Menu.
CONFIG:KAT3 should be "auto" or "byp" but not "not inst". See page 47 of
the K3 Owner's manual under "Option Module Enables".

Your Alpha's key line is connected to the KEY OUT line on the back of the K3
and not some other K3 rear-panel connector, right?

If you unplug the KEY OUT line from the back of the K3 and short across the
RCA phono connector, does that key the Alpha?
If not, then the problem is in the cable or the amplifier.

I'd then put a voltmeter on this line and see if it's being brought down to
zero when you activate the K3 PTT.

[Elecraft] Low SubRX audio below 20m

2009-03-22 Thread nekvtster
On 30m and below, the sub RX audio is much lower in level than the main RX.
I am set up to use the "SUB" audio control as the "balance" control between
the main and SubRX audio levels (SPKRS: 2, SPKR+PH: no, SUB AF: balance).
Both receivers get their RF from the main antenna. On 20m and above, this
works fine - adjusting the control to the 12 o'clock position "centers" the
stereo audio image between the two speakers. On 30m and below, however, the
sub RX audio is much lower - the "balance" control is at about 3 o'clock
(ie, injecting a much smaller amount of main RX audio) to "center" the
stereo image. Thus, I have to "ride" this control when changing bands.

I am using the latest "public" firmware revision, but I believe I have had
this problem for some time. I did purchase "matched" filters for the main
and sub RX's, and I have re-checked to ensure that they are set up with the
same parameters. The state of the AFX control has no perceptible effect and
I see that AF GAIN and AF LIM cannot be set differently for main and sub RX.

Any thoughts on what is causing this? I don't see any previous mention in
the reflector archives.

How exactly did you determine that no one can hear you? Because they
don't answer?

I'm also curious how you concluded that the fault lies with the K3. If
I was getting full power out as determined by an external wattmeter, and
I could hear the modulation on a second receiver, the K3 would be last
on my list of suspects.

To all those who have helped.. The frequency counter says I'm
transmitting on the same frequency as received. External watt meter shows
full power with almost zero SWR. Antenna analyzer shows the antenna OK.
However no one hears me on any band except 75. Modulation OK as monitored
on another receiver. Everything should be OK, but isn't. Hopefully Elecraft
can help tomorrow. Thanks to all.

But while ago you said that your 75A3 couldn't hear your signal. Now I
assume it can. So what changed? And you say "Modulation OK"...Well unless
I'm missing something obvious, what could Elecraft do? Maybe you could have

it is possible to disable modes? I never use data- or am-mode and fm

Yes, but: another HUGE advantage of the K3 is its ability to get very
narrow to pull very weak PSK31 (or RTTY) signals out of the noise with
both a selectable fixed roofing filter, and a variable filter that can be
made very narrow filter and tuned around a bit. I would think that PSK
operators would find this quite useful for working through QRM when
contesters forget and accidentally invade their usual haunts.

Re: [Elecraft] Bose noise canceling headphones

2009-03-22 Thread Gary Smith
I use these headphones, the QC2. I paid around $100 for them on ebay
over a year ago. There's an occasional hum in the right chanel I get
every so often but was just sent a "fix" for it a couple days ago. As
the "humm" is not there I haven't done the fix. (the hypothesis is a
potentiometer needs the occasional turn to restore proper contact).
If this is the fix, it is most easy to do.

just in case, I called Bose and they said to get replacement ones as
this one is not in warranty anymore would cost me $100.

I have worn many headphones in my rock, Acoustic and bluegrass career
and I have worn quite a few in my ham Radio hobby too but none are
more comfortable or easier to me than these Bose QC2 to listen to
when it comes to hearing faint sounds.

As to the noise cancelling, I have a Ameritron AL-1500 sitting 2-3
feet from me and it has a fairly audible blower. With these
headphones on I can hardly hear the slightest hint of a whisper. I
have two studio headphones (Senhauser and Sony) which sound great in
a quiet studio but in comparison to the QC2 rate a D minus to the QC2
getting an A minus (Minus because there's always room for
improvement.

That said, I use the QC2 exclusively with my K3 unless I'm walking
about the room. If I'm sitting at the radio, I have the QC2
headphones on.

As to the batteries, The QC2 uses one AAA battery. I use Costco and a
huge package of the AAA Duracells are quite inexpensive there. but I
tend to forget to urn the QC2 off and leave it turned on for long
periods of time. Even with Costco's low price, I burn through
batteries too fast.

Seeing as I lend out my MFJ SWR Analyzer frequently to local club
members to tweak their antennae, it burns through 12 AA batteries in
a heartbeat. So I have a charger for NIMH batteries and have four AAA
And 16 of the AA NIMH batteries that I keep charged and use these in
the analyzer and QC2 and forget about battery cost.

I chose the QC2 as opposed to the QC3 because the QC3 has an Li
internal battery which isn't removed to recharge and I don't want to
remove it to recharge the battery in a contest. Also, the QC2 are the
most comfortable of any of my headphones and envelop the entire ear
so extraneous sounds are quite suppressed.

No luck,

My understanding is that the problem is that they have to prove to the
FCC that scanning is disabled outside the amateur band, and there is a

watts, suggests that your K3 when it is supposed to be transmitting on 20m
is generating RF in some other part of the spectrum, hopefully not a
parasitic. Does the K3's transmitter work as it should on all of the other
bands?

Can you listen across the entire HF spectrum to find out where the K3 might
be transmitting when 20m is selected?

73,

Geoff

Thanks for the quick response Arie. I tried upgrading
my firmware from 2.67 to 2.78 but I'm still seeing the
same results. (RF meter remains at 0 when transmitting)

Re: [Elecraft] K3

2009-03-22 Thread Steve Ellington
Call Elecraft.
I'm dieing to see how this turns out. I mean...If you are putting 100w into
the antenna, your swr is low and your meter indicates modulation, you must
be transmitting and you must be on the right band otherwise your SWR would
be high unless you've compensated for that with a tuner somehow. How the
75A3 can't hear anything just doesn't compute. One thing for sureI would
not call anyone. Someone out there is listening but who knows where!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PSK31 Data Mode and ESSB

2009-03-22 Thread Bill Strong

Dave,

Thank you very much for the prompt response and testing of this for me. Once
generally known, this ability to operate PSK31 in ESSB with click and
transmit across a 3.5 kHz waterfall would I think make the K3 even more
attractive to data mode operators than it already is. It would probably be
unique at least among affordable radios.

It sounds as though it is feasible now though not quite as convenient as it
would be if settings were built into firmware.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - ERR 12V - FIXED

2009-03-22 Thread Ed K1EP
I didn't have time to work on the radio until a couple of days
ago. When I first looked at the problem last weekend in the middle
of the Elecraft QSO Party, I removed the top cover and the fan
assembly. I pulled on one of the wires that connect from the KPA3 to
the circuit breaker and apparently the wire crimp was not great, as
the wire pulled out. I figured that was the problem and
reattached/soldered the wire to the crimp connector, however this
didn't solve the problem. I was still measuring higher than normal
resistances from the powerpole connector to the circuit
breaker. Checking the schematic, I determined that there wasn't
anything in the path that should have resistance greater than a few
milliohms. I removed the rear bottom cover to get a better look at
the power entry. While continuously monitoring the resistance from
the powerpole to the PA, I squeezed the motherboard-KPAIO3-KPA3
"sandwich". The resistance came back to normal! I removed the
single screw holding the KPAIO3 and again squeezed the
combination. 12V is routed through two sets of multiple Berg stick
type connectors from the main board up to the PA board. Although I
could not feel any movement, that is, the boards appeared to have
been properly seated, the slight movement of the compression appears
to have dramatically reduced the contact resistance. All I can say
is that there must have been some oxidation on the contacts and the
slight movement eliminated it. All appears to be well now, as I
operated part of the Russian DX Contest this weekend with no loss of
power or error messages.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PSK31 Data Mode and ESSB

2009-03-22 Thread Dave G4AON
Bill, testing on PSK31 TX, using USB and ESSB set to 4 KHz, centre freq
at 1500 Hz (normal K3 DSP setting)... I can obtain full power from 300
Hz to 3500 Hz on the waterfall, the power drops off abruptly above 3500
Hz. By moving the centre frequency to 2000 Hz I can transmit up to 3700 Hz.

On Data A, the upper limit is 2900 Hz, I don't think ESSB works on Data
A. Although the menu suggests it is turned on, there is no "+" on the
LCD display.

The advantage of using Data A (as opposed to SSB) is that you
automatically select the appropriate mic or line input, per mode. Maybe
wider data modes could be incorporated in a firmware update.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PSK31 Data Mode and ESSB

2009-03-22 Thread Dave G4AON
I've just checked my K3 and DM780, I have the 6 KHz "AM" filter. The
bandwidth appears to go to 4 KHz on the ESSB menu setting, but in fact
the waterfall in DM780 only shows audio out to 3.5 KHz bandwidth on
receive. I can move the centre frequency of the DSP filter to 2 KHz
(normally it is 1.5 KHz) which sorts out the HF end showing on the LO
and HI settings 0.00 and 4.00 respectively. The 3.5 KHz bandwidth looks
to be fairly easy.

You might like to check with Lyle, KK7P, as to whether 4 KHz is
something that can be incorporated in later firmware without needing to
resort to shifting the centre frequency.

I've not tried transmitting with ESSB/data mode settings.

Hz to about 1600 Hz on the Superbrowser waterfall without too much
attenuation of the transmitted signal. I made this determination using a
field strength meter and also in-line watt meter.

I would like to run a 3.5 kHz wide waterfall and be able to click and

way with ESSB and the 6 kHz roofing filter? In my reading of the K3 manual
it seems that this would be possible.

Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 independance RX Main Ant1 Sub Ant2 possible?

Frank,

The AUX ANT input to the sub has a COR (carrier operated relay) included
as a protective device. See the antenna routing configuration possible
in the manual starting at page 41.
If you hear a relay clicking as you transmit, you may want to check the
amount of RF that is coming from your receive antenna. The K3 T/R
switching is all electronic, no relays should operate.

[Elecraft] K3 <> Hiel Proset

2009-03-22 Thread Evert Bakker (PA2KW)
Hello,

As this question is about peripherals, I don't know if it is allowed to, but
I give it a try. (if not let me know).

I bought (locally) a Heil-Proset with the HC4 element to use in combi with
the K3.

I used to have a 20 year old Telex (very tiny headphone, mono wired and no
microphone). I'm still very happy with it as its designed for
telecommunications use.

But with the KRX3 installed, it's time for the stereo set.

Any idea?

Later tonight I'll get my Drake TR7 running again and see if the effect is
also there (I just guess not).

Thanks in advance

73's, Evert PA2KW

Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)

2009-03-22 Thread Guy Olinger, K2AV
NOTHING removes ALL noise. The K3 can pretty much nail key clicks. It also
completely kills whatever my neighbor beyond my neighbor does in cold
weather that I can see all the way up to VHF analog TV. I'll take those two
and smile about anything else only moderately reduced.

I note at one point some had complained they couldn't eliminate some of the
(Chinese?) jamming signals. I would note that those signals were
specifically DESIGNED to resist elimination.

73, Guy.

[Elecraft] UK Elecraft net report for Sunday 22nd March

2009-03-22 Thread Dave G4AON
Conditions seemed quite variable this week with several stations
complaining of high noise levels which seemed to be local to them. Here
the general background noise was similar to normal at around -110 dBm
(S3). The net was on 3627 KHz from 1000 hours onwards.

Discussions included the K3-EZ software package
(http://home.roadrunner.com/~n2bc/SW.htm) and how one of our colleagues
managed to foul up his K3 during the net with it...

Version 3.03 of the K3 firmware seemed to be generally OK with most
stations (as far as I know) on the net using it. I think everyone has
had a fiddle with the AGC parameters with no real surprises.

Doug had a problem with his K3 where one of the SWR/power measuring
diodes failed. Replacement diodes from Farnell fixed the problem (diodes
D36 and D37).

Mike had been in dialogue with Elecraft over a high phase noise problem
with the synthesiser in his K3, the problem now appears to be resolved.

The "cheap" headset I was using on the net is a Labtec Axis-302 with a
Heil HC-5 insert fitted. The headset came from an eBay seller and was
quite cheap (£6-99), the headset can be used "as is" on a K3 with low
gain and bias set to "on", or can have alternative inserts fitted
without too much effort. The insert sits in a small housing where the
cover is secured with a Philips screw. A HC-5 insert can be hot melt
glued in place of the original insert, which also requires a larger foam
windshield than that supplied. As noted previously, how good a
microphone sounds is very dependant on the voice characteristics of the
user.

Doug also reported good results with a recently purchased KAF2 audio
filter for his K2.

Peter will be running an Elecraft stand at the Blackpool Rally on 5th
April. Many of those on the net will be at the rally. Details of the
rally from: http://www.g1gyc.demon.co.uk/narsa/

Stations this week were:

G4DQP, Vince
G0VGS, Ian
M1PAF, Paul
GM0ELP, Doug
G0MJW, Mike
G3UCA, Peter
GM3SEK, Ian
GM4ESD, Doug

73 until next week
Dave, G4AON
K3/100, Acom 1000, dipole

[Elecraft] K3 New Picture

2009-03-22 Thread HB9ANM

The new picture looks really nice.
But how did they manage to have USB and QSK on at the same time?
Just a thought...
