I find it hard to believe that people are actually complaining. Good
grief! :-(

There are lots of amps to buy. There's already a Panadapter
solution. But there's only one integrated 2M adapter for the K3.

I guess everyone has an opinion and an , or wishes they were a

2009-05-13 Thread Eric Swartz -WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Guys - please, no more criticisms of other's postings. We appreciate the
enthusiasm and support, but its not necessary or proper to jump on
someone for criticizing something. Its OK to disagree, but keep it civil.

Regarding what comes out when - we're running as fast as we can and do
not have infinite resources. (And we're still working hard on numerous
K3 enhancements.) I'd love to have another 10-20 engineers on staff, but
I think we'll have to sell mucho more K3s for that to happen. So tell
your friends about the K3 ;-)

Some products take longer to develop than others. None of this is easy.
Believe me, we'd love to have everything people want right now.
Different engineers, with different expertises, are available for
different products. That's what frequently determines what we can get
out first. We were able to get the W2 and K144XV products out for Dayton
without delaying our K3 enhancements and other projects. We have a lot
going on on the background, so stay tuned..

As we get closer to other new products, well post here, but we do not
want to over commit and will not give dates on anything new until it is
close.

It always amazes me how speculation on the internet gets perceived as
fact once several people repeat it. The rumor mill rarely is accurate
;-) What 200W option? Wow, that one is news to me. :-)

I've been having a great time with my office K3 and K144XV on the local
2M FM repeaters. Surprised a few locals when I told them I was on a K3..
Its going to be a super option.

[Elecraft] Our beloved knobs

2009-05-13 Thread Lynn Lamb, W4NL
An idea which is not expensive, but very nice.

I like my radio tuning knob to feel soft, warm and the key to the world.

Well, I discovered Ten-Tec has a soft rubber ring which slides over the K3
knob in 10 seconds and nothing needs to be done to the K3 knob. These soft
rubber knob covers come in Orange, Red, light Blue, Charcoal, and Black. To
each his own, but I like the feel very much.

I believe they have them on their webpage, so google Ten-Tec if you are
interested. They may have some at Dayton too.. don't know. I can send a
picture of mine to anyone off line if interested.

I don't work for Ten-Tec, but I do lean toward Elecraft and Ten-Tec since
they are two of the main companies for our toys and they are run by first
class Hams who listen to us in the bushes.

Enjoy, lynn W4NL

[Elecraft] Sneak Peak Preview

2009-05-13 Thread Mike Scott
Wayne,

The very first capability I looked for on your W2 Watt Meter was two port
measurement.

The K3 can quickly change which port it is transmitting on. I would hope to
have a Watt Meter that hooked up to both Antenna A and B and would know
which port was active. The W2 requires a manual switch it seems to know
which antenna is active. Why doesn't the W2 read the K3 active port or use
RF carrier detection to know?

The new products look great. I must admit I was disappointed that both
are "no soldering" items. I was hoping that the wattmeter would involve

[Elecraft] W1: Announcing the RWD-1 (Remote Wattmeter Display) for the W1

2009-05-13 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
Hello all,

Steve Silverman, KB3SII, has designed a remote head for the W1 wattmeter
that utilizes the serial port and serial commands of the W1 to remotely
display many of the software functions of the W1 including forward,
reverse, peak and average power. They are displayed on a Newhaven LCD
graphic module and Steve has come up with a very nice and tight package
with a small footprint for very convenient placement. In essence, this
unit will emulate many of the W1 software commands in a nice hardware
package without the need for a computer. It will of course be offered
with one of my Lexan enclosures for protection form the elements and
operators.

It was our intention to publish some details and pictures on my website
and make the announcement here on the reflector as well as display the
unit in the Elecraft booth in Dayton this weekend. But, do to some
unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances on my end, I am not able to
update my site before departing for Dayton. In fact, I will not be able
to arrive in Dayton until Saturday morning. So, I am announcing the
RWD-1 here in hopes that any of you who are attending Dayton this year
will drop by on Saturday or Sunday to see a demo version of the unit.

I should have enough time to complete a couple of enclosures for the
demo units this week and will meet Steve on Saturday to put the demo
units together. We have not settled on exact pricing as yet, but plan to
offer the RWD-1 as separate components: the RWD-1 display kit, serial
cable, and enclosure. Or as a total package. We would value any input
form those interested in this product by those attending the show or I
would be happy to answer questions posted on the reflector, although, my
time will be very restricted for the next few days until I arrive in Dayton.

This is a very exciting project that enhances the W1 nicely and should
fill the niche of display performance problems noted here on the
reflector a number of weeks ago. I also believe the RWD-1 will fill a
gap between the W1 and the new W2 I saw announced by Wayne here today
(good stuff).

So please drop by the booth and ask me about this project. I will also
have my enclosures on display as well and be taking in the buzz of all
that is Elecraft in the booth. I will try to answer any email questions
you have, but please be patient for my replies for a few days. As time
permits, I will put up a page on my website with pictures and
documentation for the RWD-1 along with pricing info.

Take care all and hope to see you in Dayton.

73,
Dave W8FGU

Customers are able to express their views freely on this reflector, as you do,
so I see nothing wrong with what has been posted to date.

What is a feature to some may not be of use to others..you may say that a
panadapter is of no use to you, but others want and will use one.

Elecraft will produce products that will sell in quantities that will keep
their company profitable and we should all let them know what we as customers
want so that they in turn can make decisions on which products they feel are
worthy of their efforts and provide them with a return on investment.

I do object to the terminology you used to describe previous posters as I
found it rather unnecessary.

We've long wanted to create a really high-quality LED power/SWR meter.
This project has been in the works for quite a while, and is in fact a
superset of our "W1" mini-module wattmeter. A lot more LEDs, remote
sensors, etc.

That's another one of my projects, and I haven't had time to finish it.
I built one prototype that looks great but still needs some acoustic
tweaks. It won't get out of my lab until it's a big improvement on the
K3's internal speaker.

[Elecraft] K3 and 2M

2009-05-13 Thread rfenabled
Bin thinkin'...Yeah I know, scary thought eh?..:-)

The nearest 2M ssb contact I know of near me is about 300 kilometres from my
QTH so to have a Rag Chew with him I will need to get some ponies and some
serious horsepower going cause that Ham unfriendly fella upstairs dropped some
serious rocks on the landscape here and put'em in between us...:-)

Now 2M FM, what do I use that fer?:-(

The trees on the property grow copper wire and real good aluminium, but it is
only good on HF:-)

Aaaah to be so lucky

KPA-200
KPA-800
KPA-1500

Now with those I could do some serious damage.

Maybe a dream, but, it's all I got to work with for now

Re: [Elecraft] Sneak Preview: New Elecraft products

2009-05-13 Thread Erik N Basilier
I have been eyeing the 2m transverter because of an old thing I have about
2m cw and ssb. Really irrational, since neither has any activity here in AZ.
My first reaction to the news was, wow, I bet the new K3 option will cost
less than the transverter, but will it have an oven option? Then when I saw
that it will depend on the K3 frequency, it looked even better. Only issue
now is I'd need a kilowatt and moonbounce to get to use it (I am not a fan
of FM), and 10 W may not be enough to drive a tube to 1 kW.

Erik K7TV

I much agree that a panadapter would or should have been on their priority list
rather than what they've just announced especially the wattmeter portion. Fern

Re: [Elecraft] N3FJP FD Logger

2009-05-13 Thread David Gilbert

For one thing, if you're jumping back and forth between CW and SSB it's
nice to have the computer log the mode appropriately ... it's pretty
easy for any operator to forget to change the mode manually each and
every time. Rig control does it for you. And with regard that, the
N3FJP software doesn't properly pick up digital modes anyway ... if you
switch the rig to RTTY or PSK you have to manually type in the new mode
when you make the change. It isn't even available as a drop-down selection.

Also, the original requester wanted to key the K3 from the N3FJP FD
logger using various message macros. That's certainly possible, but if
I remember correctly (I could be wrong) there is no full-time display to
show which function keys hold which messages. You'd need a paper crib
sheet to educate each new operator. With N1MM, the macros can be sent
from the function keys, but they are also accessible as on-screen mouse
buttons that display text to help you remember which one to click on.

One of the coolest benefits of rig control with a competent program like
N1MM, however, is the band map capability. Even without packet feeds,
the bandmap can show you stations displayed by frequency ... the ones
you've already worked are shown in gray text and the ones you had
previously flagged to try later show up in color. Clicking on a
callsign automatically resets the rig to that frequency. That's a neat
feature for the average Field Day operator that is don't mostly
search-and-pounce.

Besides, the various operators don't need to know how to set up N1MM.
Once it is installed, and without the bells and whistles turned on, in
my opinion it is as simple to use as N3FJP with less chance for human error.

>I'm wondering why anybody would "need" rig control during Field

Let's define rig control. For contesting, rig control can be as
simple as keeping up with operating frequency and mode and putting
in the log. Contesting with good software can be a lot of fun, and
can contribute to "sucking new operators" into the fun of
contesting. Contesting software can do much more, of course, but
you're right, you're less likely to need those more sophisticated
functions on Field Day.

If you've never used good contest software, you may have no idea
what it can do. The software can call CQ for you, on either CW,
SSB, or RTTY, and even give out your exchange. It can check for
dupes (so that you don't waste your time and theirs working them
five times, as so often happens on Field Day). Ah -- having the
computer call CQ is for pansies, you say. Well, if your computer
can't call CQ for you, you can never take a drink of coffee or feed
your face! And maybe while it's calling CQ, you can listen on
another RX to see if it's time for a band change, or chat with
another operator, or with a newbie that you're mentoring.

Since my first Field Day, more than 50 years ago, it's been my
favorite contest. To many of us, it may have been our introduction
to ham radio. And to many avid contesters, it was our introduction
to contesting.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - SWR Indication

2009-05-13 Thread Geoffrey Downs
Thank you Don (W3FPR), Jack (K8ZOA) and Larry (N8LP) for
your interesting comments on this thread last week and for taking the
trouble to set them down so clearly.

My technical expertise in this area is no match for yours although I did
make my first, fairly unsophisticated, indicator of forward and reflected
power in 1967. In those days it was called a "Reflectometer" rather
than an SWR meter - nothing to do with a Reflector of course :-)

Since then I've used quite a few SWR meters of one sort or another and
although a lot of technology has moved on beyond my understanding I've
picked up enough to know that different meters will give different
indications just as Don and Jack say. Some are, I think, better than others
and I must admit that I have a good opinion of the LP100A but in my
experience most of them agree within a reasonable margin of tolerance.
Of course we could argue till the cows come home about what is a
reasonable margin of tolerance and whether one meter or another falls
within it (but let's not!). The reason I originally posted to the reflector
was that the discrepancy I noted at 7.000 MHz of 1.2:1 on the K3 and
2:1 on two other meters was larger than I had come across before,
and arguably outside that reasonable margin so I wanted to know what
was going on. A number of suggestions have been made both on and off
list but I'm still not sure.

It would be interesting to know what indication the newly announced W2 would
give, but we may have to wait a little while to find out.

[Elecraft] K1 RF board DC checks failing

2009-05-13 Thread Mike Clarke
Hi all,

Having received and fitted the replacement voltage regulator that
solved my previous K1 problem, I've moved on to the first DC checks on
the RF board (page 30 in my manual.)

I'm performing the checks with the board connected to a stable supply
at 13.8 volts.

The first two checks pass fine, but the second two state that I should
be reading between 3.8 and 4.2 volts on U3 pin 5, and between 7.6 and
8.7 volts on U3 pin 6. I'm actually measuring 3.66 volts and 7.54
volts, respectively.

Normally these might count as 'close enough', but given the quality of
the manual (and my soldering!) I'm inclined to think I've gone wrong
somewhere! Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what I might have
done?

Thanks and 73,

Writelog and N1MM are both more powerful software packages but how much
power do you need for field day? We're not talking about dedicated CQ WW
teams who get together and practice using software for three months
prior. For the most part FJP's FD logger gets used by folks on field day
who "contest" once per year. They have neither the time nor inclination
to learn something like N1MM.

I'm wondering why anybody would "need" rig control during field day.

A future option module. It would include a PLL circuit that locks the

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & N1MM for RTTY

I'll take that a few steps further. N1MM can do SO2R with SSB and
RTTY from a single computer that has two serial ports -- IF you
set RTTY up for AFSK and use VOX rather than PTT. That's what I
do, and it works quite well.

N1MM does NOT work for CW SO2R using two serial ports, or even
four serial ports, from the same computer. It has to do with the
way they send CW. Two good ways to do it, depending on your
resources. The method they recommend is with a WinKey keyer. Easy
to build, inexpensive. I bought one, haven't used it yet. The
second way that works (for me, at least) is with two computers,
networked, each with a single serial port. The N1MM folks will
tell you this is "not supported."

There are tutorials on my website about how to reliably interface
rigs and computers without hum and buzz, using nothing more than
wires. No transformers, no interface boxes.

You can, of course, get much fancier, especially with control of
your headphones.

Very nice Wayne! Only 3 questions :)

1. Why the 200W limit on VHF/UHF sensor?
2. When will they actually ship?
3. What are the headers for on the 2m board? 70cm perhaps?

[Elecraft] QTH.Net versus Yahoo Groups

2009-05-13 Thread Jim Garland
I subscribe to the Elecraft email digest on QTH.NET, and also the FT-2000
digest on Yahoo Groups. Maybe nobody feels the same way, but I find the
Elecraft digest very hard to read. Each Elecraft digest comes with many
email attachments, each of which has to be opened individually. The lead
email shows the number and title of all the postings (the last one had 54),
but the numbers aren't given in the subject for the other attachments, which
makes finding them problematic. I'd like to read the postings, but doing so
is too time consuming under the current setup, and I don't want to load up
my In Box with individual postings.

By contrast, the FT-2000 digest lists all the postings as links and one just
clicks on the desired posting to read it. I find it much easier to follow.
I might have a wrong setting somewhere, in which case just ignore this
message, but if by chance many other people are having the same problem,
then perhaps Elecraft should consider moving the reflector to Yahoo Groups.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: Speaking of fans!

2009-05-13 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
You are right that there's no space for a quieter fan *in* the KPA100.
Indeed I suspect it was the on-going comments about the noisy little beast
that cause a lot of thought about "whisper-quiet" fans in the K3.

However, there is a way to keep the little beast from turning on except in
the most extreme situations: improve the cooling of the heat sink on *top*
of the KPA100. Several of us had great success adding a simple muffin fan
sitting right on the KPA100 heat sink. Mine was raised just a bit by putting
some rubber "feet" on the fan that sat on the heat sink. A large fan is
nearly inaudible (I added resistor slow down my 12-volt 4" fan) and keeps
the amp much cooler, limiting the need for the "whizzer" in the back to do
its thing.

Be sure you aren't blocking the air vents at the forward end of the KPA100's
fins. Many owners don't realize there are spaces there. Air driven by the
small fan flows across the KPA100 inside the K2 and through the holes at the
front end of the heat sink fins and so helps cool the heat sink fins too. Be
sure your added fan supports that air flow rather than fight it.

Hello,

I am currently in the process of upgrading the fans for the KPA3 100 Watt
Amplifier module because the heatsink temperature gets too high for my
liking. I am upgrading both fans to a fan with higher CFM output. Last night
I hooked both fans up to the KPAIO module to test and see if they will work.
When I am on fan power level one, the fans try to but are unable to start
up. I have to bump them to start them spinning. Power level two has no
problem spinning them up. When I went to power level four and then brought
the power level to one, the fans did not have any problem continuing
running. The fan specs can be found here
http://www.sundialmicro.com/ipcqueen_dc_fan_606010_ball_bearing_3pin_2033_1199.html.
Is there any components that I can add in line to provide the necessary
power to start the fans up at power level one?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] Can a 1N4007 Be an Effective Relay Snubber?

2009-05-13 Thread Sandy
I've used nothing but 1n4007's for years now for relay snubbers. They work
just great.

I don't bother with the slightly cheaper 1n4001's and that sort. You can
get the 1N4007's cheap enough and use one type diode for everything. Some
of the manufacturers don't put any identifcation on the diodes other than
the cathode stripe which makes identifying the difference a pain in the
butt.

Apparently not all K3s are created equal, thermally speaking.

On my K3, it takes about 2:45 of 20 wpm CW at 50 watts into a dummy
load to raise the PA temp from 18C to 37C (the fan turn-on temp.
Ambient temp is about 18C.)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 & N1MM for RTTY

2009-05-13 Thread Julius Fazekas n2wn

Another option for CW is CONFIG: OFF-KEY, this allows full break-in. Found it
really useful in contests...

For FSK you need a second COM port and a simple transistor/resistor
interface. Set both RTS and DTR to ALWAYS OFF on the second port.

It's a bit of a bear to get through it all the first time. I fought with the
set-up for a while but got a lot of good help here.

I can forward a couple emails with some pointers I received... Works like a
charm now.

Cheers,
Julius

I wonder if elecraft actually does thermal and vibrational stress

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KPA3 Fan Upgrade Question

2009-05-13 Thread Guy Olinger, K2AV
What would be the improvement over the original fans, based on the
referenced specs below? At high fan speeds, the airflow is limited by the
intake grills on the case. You can set the original fans on any level as a
minimum flow using the configuration menu.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 KPA3 Fan Upgrade Question

2009-05-13 Thread Dave Hachadorian
With stock fans, you shouldn't see more than about 64C on
the PA TEMP reading (with 77F room air). The high temp
warning, with KPA bypass, is set for 84C, so there is quite
a bit of headroom.

If you really want to use your new fans, you could set
config: kpa3 = Fn2. With that setting, the fans will never
run at less than speed 2, but will speed up at the
appropriate temp as the PA warms up.

Is there any components that I can add in line to provide the necessary

If it ain't broke - don't fix it. The fans on the K3 are fine. If your
K3 is getting hot, check the original fans to be sure they weren't blocked
by a screw or something. There is a fan-check procedure outlined in the
manual somewhere (menu item?). You can also read the actual temp on the

Hi Brian,
I'm sure others will chime in. What mode are you using? What power? What
SWR? What's the room temperature?

At 100 Watts, for MARS I need to lecture on USB for 20 minutes at a time.
No problem what so ever. With digital modes I do need to cut the power down
to 50 Watts. I never hear the fans go on. I think you need to give us all
the details. I would never dream of replacing the fans on the K3. Perhaps
the temps need to be recalibrated. I just would hate for you to go though
all that work if it wasn't truly necessary. It is such a well engineered
radio. I'm sure Elecraft has the temperature management aspects covered.

Thanks for all the comments!

I'm quite happy with the mic element (HC-4 in my case). They're comfortable,
but not as comfortable as the Sony Walkman headset I use for CW.

They sound "muffled" to me and require more drive for the headphones than
the walkmans...

Will wait until I hear back from folks attending Dayton on the new ones.

Thanks
Brian Binkley

Re: [Elecraft] K3 beta firmware revision 3.14 now available

2009-05-13 Thread Ron NA9F

Jon I had no trouble loading in 3.14 and all worked for me.
Hope it works out ok for you. Might try downloading it again.

I tried upgrading in the background while having breakfast, but something
went wrong. I'll
have to investigate once I get back home. In the meantime, I'd appreciate a
heads up or two
from people who have successfully upgraded. That would tell me that the
problem is on my
end and not in the firmware file.

Re: [Elecraft] Can a 1N4007 Be an Effective Relay Snubber?

2009-05-13 Thread Jack Smith
Any of the 1N400x series work well for this purpose.

I've slowly learned the lesson that as a very small kit provider that
it's often cheaper to use the same part in multiple kits even though it
may be over-rated for some applications because the increased volume
reduces the price, fewer stock keeping concerns, etc.

Hence, my "standard power diode" for designs (reverse voltage
protection, relay snubbing, etc.) is the 1N4007.

And, there's no "theory" that I'm aware of predicting a 1N4007 diode has
a slow turn-on time. What there seems to be the case is that because
these diodes have a slow turn-off time (predicted by theory and
confirmed in practice), hams have confused the two and reached the
incorrect conclusion that slow turn-off = slow turn-on. Quite different
physics are at work in these two conditions.
