[Elecraft] Battery charging with PWRGATE and Astron linear or Alnico DM-330V power supplies

2009-06-09 Thread eric norris

If you use a PWRGATE between your supply and and a battery, you MUST raise the
voltage to compensate for the drop across the Schottky diode in the PWRGATE.
The correct voltages for different batteries are in the manual. Even with my
old Astron linear RS-35 it is easy to adjust the output voltage, there is a pot
on the board. The manual is on the Astron site. The DM-330V has the voltage
adjust knob right on the front panel. I've never found any noise from that
power supply, but I will defer to those with a spectrum analyzer. It does have
a freq control so you can move any birdies you find. A great little power
supply.

The PWRGATE is an easy way to use your supply with a back-up battery, and it
offers programmable bulk charging rate. My measurements with a DVM after
carefully setting the output voltage of the supply suggest it is charging at
the correct float rate.

[Elecraft] K2 build time

2009-06-09 Thread Brett Gazdzinski
It took me two and a half days to build my 2nd K2, about 30 hours total,
then some time spent doing the alignment and adjustment, then I built most
of the options in the next week.
The first K2 took about 40 hours, but I think they improved the manual over
time.

The building is VERY fun and addictive, I like to finish what I start, and
if single, would work 24 hours at a time.

The K2 works fantastic, but is a small and low button count radio.
I think Elecraft really needs to make a full size version of the K2 with
lots of knobs and better displays.
It would be a great rig to build and use in the shack, the k2 is just the
thing for portable and mobile operation.

Re: [Elecraft] New to the Forum

2009-06-09 Thread John Frerichs

My K2/10 took about 40 hours to complete.  Every evening after work was spent
plugging and soldering.  Having such a nice radio with which to work that was
made by me is very rewarding.

Gary,

It took me three weeks of evenings and weekends to build my K2/100 and
all the options including a KAT-100 tuner. I'd get home from work, slam
some food down my neck and get to it, stuffing and soldering. I'd start
at 7:00pm local and work a couple of hours. On occasion I'd look up and
it would be 1:00am. Long day in the IT salt mine but ultimately worth it.

Re: [Elecraft] New to the Forum

2009-06-09 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Not wanting to hide out in a corner, I used a 2x3' drafting board, put it on
my lap in the living room with the soldering station on a TV tray, and built
my K2 while chatting with the XYL, listening to music, and even watching
some TV.

Twelve days, start to finish, working probably two or three hours each
evening.

I did segue to the operating desk to run some of the interim power on
checks.

And then I sat down to do the alignments, etc. Probably another couple of
hours in the "shack".

That was back in 2000, and it's still a *great* rig.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 single-rx testing

2009-06-09 Thread Guy Olinger, K2AV
Assuming (??) that you refer to getting the KRX3 to turn your K3 to a 2 RX
K3, there really is not that kind of interdependence. You don't have to
have a "tested good" 1 RX K3 to support the KRX3. If some problem crops up,
you work it out with Elecraft's excellent technical support.

If you're talking about something else, you need to explain.

Re: [Elecraft] New to the Forum

2009-06-09 Thread Gary Hinson
I agree. The K2 took me a month of evenings and was enjoyable. The K3 took
a whole day and was over too soon! Both radios worked fine from the first
power up.

There is quite a lot of soldering and toroid-winding in the K2, none of that
for the K3. If the K2 is like Meccano, the K3 is like Lego.

I would expect this to be a breach of the terms of service for the
common online call databases. Like most information web sites, they
exist to sell targetted advertising and their callsign database is
commercially valuable.

Google maps is probably OK, as you would still allow through the Google
advertising.

Note that there are mapping sites (specifically www.openstreetmap.org)
that have a funding model similar to US National Public Radio, and
moreover aim to produce royalty free map data, but I'm not so sure that
it would be easy to set up a callsign database on that basis, except
possibly for the USA, where the data is possibly condidered public
domain due to being obtained by a federal agency.

The actual software could be rather simple, although a GUI interface
would compromise that. The real issue are the geographic and callsign
databases.

Incidentally, logging in is valuable for advertising funded databases,
as it makes it easier to target advertising at individual.

Gary,
Its been years since I built my K2, but allow a couple of weeks to complete
if you work several (6) hours a day. That sounds pretty intimidating but the
K2 is modular and it turns out you get to test the front panel and become
familiar with all of the controls before completing the main RF board. That
is then done in a couple of stages whereby you build just the 40meter
operations first, and then add the other bands. Later you can add options
such as automatic tuner, ssb, 160 meter, dsp, transverter, and high power
amplifier as you choose or not. The instructions are great and the whole
experience is very enjoyable. If you get in trouble the guys on this

Re: [Elecraft] a cool software Idea - using QRZ

2009-06-09 Thread Don Nesbitt
I can't think of a reason it would be any different with Mac Safari.

If you are not a registered user (free) you can't sign in and you will not
get the line because the program does not know where you are. You've got to
sign in. Then the program uses your location for one end of the line and
the call you looked up for the other end. Also, don't forget to zoom out
far enough to see both stations. 73 es gud dxing -- Don N4HH K3/100 #83

[Elecraft] [K3] K3 single-rx testing

2009-06-09 Thread David Windisch

Hi, all concerned:

Experience and hope prompt me to ask if a single-rx K3 can be pre-tested to
verify that it will operate properly with a second receiver.

Re: [Elecraft] Battery Charging with DC Power Supply

2009-06-09 Thread HowardZ

Hi Steve,

My experience has been better with the IOTA DLS-45. I used it for about
a year for my Icom 746pro. Then I bought an Alico DM-340MV linear for
my 746pro and used the IOTA for my 2m radio. I did not notice any
difference in noise levels on HF - but perhaps it depends what
frequencies one uses. I primarily use Mars frequencies near the 75/80m
band and also PSK31 at 14.070 and occasionally Mars frequencies near 160m.

I just purchased the DLS-90 (90 amps) to power a SGC 500 watt amplifier
I have ordered. I read a recommendation for it from a SGC 500 amplifier
owner. I am still waiting for the amplifier to arrive, so I have not yet
used the DLS-90.

I have read some good comments from hams on marine boat web sites -
saying they chose it because it is a good value and also does not
interfere with their amateur HF radios on board the boat. They charge
their boat batteries with it when they are running their generator.

Based on the reviews at eham.net I thought the DLS series was
electrically quiet and a fine choice. Maybe you should post your
experiences at eham.net so others will know?

Hey that's a good idea Paul. Can I apply it to my KX1?! Disassembling &
then re-assembling it might rekindle that "new kit" feeling all over

Now where'd I put that de-soldering braid...

Re: [Elecraft] New to the Forum

2009-06-09 Thread pd0psb

Hi Ben,

Welcome on board!
You'll certainly won't regret stepping into the K3 adventure.

After years of Japanese (and ex marine) equipment the big difference to me:
-A radio made by hams for hams, you'll find this in virtually every
functionality.
-The most versatile and expandable radio on the market (see option list)
-The best roofing/frontend/phase-noise figures a "hobby-budget" can buy.
-A real "experimenters" radio from a tradition of kitbuilding.(that's what
this hobby used to be all about ;-)

In other words: the K3 is quite different in many ways.
Being amongst a crowd of users in contact with each other and the
developpers gives it an extra dimension.

It's a pity you won't be assembling your K3 yourself, that really makes it
"your" radio.
May be you should take it apart at least once :-)

Hi Group,
My name is Ben. My callsign is KØBLR. I live up here in Central MN. I just
decided to join here because it looks like I am about go through the process
of buying a used K3/100W. From what I know about it has 2 filters in it and
its only about 1 week old or so. The owner is selling it because he is not
very technology inclinded  as he put it if memory serves me right.
Anyways, in a nutshell how has the K3 done for many of you on here. I am
not very knowlegeable on radio theory but in your opinion what makes the K3
better that big 4 manufactures out there?
