I honestly don't believe that the K3 screen has the resolution to be an
effective bandscope. But thats just my humble opinion.

As the 2 metre band in most of the world is just 144 to 146 MHz, Wayne,
this does seem to be an unnecessary complication for many of us. Does
this facility increase the cost of the K144XV? If so, is there an
alternative option for those of us with the 144-146 MHz band?

Already having an XV144, I am trying to find a reason why I should order
a K144XV for my K3. Can you help? What are the advantages?

I can tell you that this, unfortunately, is impossible. The K3's display isn't
bit-mapped
-- it has a fixed set of things that it can display.

I too admit that I've watched all of these LPPans go by at attractive prices
because --
much as I want a panoramic display -- I am waiting for the Elecraft product.
And I also
hope it will be a standalone device that does not require a computer.

Re: [Elecraft] LP PAN

2009-07-22 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr WA5ZNU
Brett,
Thanks for pointing it out. It was an old screen shot. I updated it to
a more recent one as the package does provide frequency control.

As for the bandwidth of the display, it's purely a function of the sound
card. On Linux, the EMU-0202 sound device supports 44.1 KHz unless it's
sent a USB command to change sample rate. I've worked with some other
Linux folks around the world to help fix this, and the results should be
coming out in new versions of the Linux "ALSA" sound system soon.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to get past 96 KHz. (The Mac driver for
the EMU-020 has this same limitation.)

You can use quisk and the LP-PAN with a less expensive sound card such
as the Griffin iMic or a 48KHz Creative USB product, all in the $40
range, and get a 48KHz bandwidth view coverage. If you're a CW or
digital mode operator, that's pretty much all you need, and it's about
half the cost of the EMU-0202.

I don't know what Elecraft's plans are, but I believe there's room for
both standalone display devices and shack computer integrated devices.
Quisk is an option for those of us who have the LP-PAN and use Linux in
the shack.

[Elecraft] Keying A Small Amp With A K2

2009-07-22 Thread David Yarnes
Hi All,

I haven't been paying much attention to the conversation
here about keying amps, etc. since I rarely use one.
However, a situation has arisen which suggests I should have
paid closer attention.

I have a couple of small amps--an HL50B, and an HLA-150,
that work well with QRP rigs for a little extra boost. The
HL50B works best with the K2 (and other QRP rigs) as it has
good RF sensing, and keys right up when you hit the paddle.
The HLA-150, however, doesn't do quite as well. It
supposedly has RF sensing too, as well as auto band
switching, but on CW I find that it is just a tad slow in
triggering. Accordingly, it tends to cut off the first
"dit" or "dah". That's about the only complaint I have
about it though. With less than 10 watts of drive you can
get over 100 watts out. The auto bandswitching works very
well. The HL-50B puts out about 60 watts with 5 watts of
drive.

The HLA-150 has a keying line input jack for direct
connection to a transceiver. However, the K2 doesn't have a
keying line output that I'm aware of. So, my question to
you amp gurus is what would be the best (easiest) way to
make this work? I'd take my HL-50B, but I left it up in
Oregon with my motorhome. I'll rectify that mistake the
next time I get up to Oregon.

Any suggestions?

Dave W7AQK

On that screen shot is that + and - about 20Khz? Shouldn't the system
be able to pull off 192Khz total width? It would also be really slick

Honestly the only reason I haven't purchased an LP-PAN is because all

I'm not certain on my feelings of requiring that the device needs a VGA

Hello Grant,

I do agree with you.  For serious contesters, they could go for XV144.  This
also gives Elecraft a clear product distinction between XV144 and K144XV.
Different product suit different market demand without too much product line
overlap.

I suppose the rest of us (non-high-power high band multi-station
contesters) shouldn't care.

But it seems this is one of those things that benefits a very few
users at the expense of adding a bit of operational clunkiness for the
bulk of K3 users  and to what was originally a pretty clean design
idea with single band coverage.  Heavy hitting contesters, do, after
all, have other options such as high performance external
transverters, etc., which they most likely already have on the table.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K144XV 2-m module design change

2009-07-22 Thread Wayne Burdick
Our prototype K144XV 2-m module for the K3 used a 6 meter IF (50-54
MHz). However, a number of K3 owners were concerned with this. In
multi-transmitter installations, such as during high-band contesting,
stations typically standardize on a 10-m IF to avoid interaction with
high-power 6-m transmitters.

Because of this, we've decided go with 10 m (28-30 MHz). The K144XV
will still cover the full 144-148 MHz range by using two local
oscillator frequencies (116 and 118 MHz). If you tune across the
boundary at 146 MHz, the oscillator will switch automatically.

The vast majority of weak signal work occurs below 146 MHz, and
repeater in/out frequencies are normally either both below 146 or
above it. So, local oscillator switching at 146 MHz should be a non-
issue for most applications.

You can set two 2-m transverter bands on the K3 if you like, one
configured for CW/SSB work (144 MHz band edge) and the other for use
with repeaters (146 MHz band edge). Or you can set up one band for the
entire range, and the oscillator will switch as you tune across the
boundary.

If you have any questions regarding this change, please feel free to
contact me directly.

73,
Wayne

George,

A quick review of the MiniCircuits mixer datasheet indicates little
difference between the TUF-1 and TUF-3 mixers. The TUF-3 should work
fine if you have one on hand, but if you do not, I would suggest the
TUF-1 would be a direct replacement and is priced lower than the TUF-3.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 s/n 1169 21MHz band distortion

2009-07-22 Thread Joe Planisky
Hi Jack,

Noise blanker settings can be remembered per-band, and very aggressive
NB settings can cause distortion. Is it possible you have set the NB
levels for the 21 MHz band to very aggressive settings (e.g. dsp t3-7
and/or IF wid7)? Press and hold the NB button when on the 21 MHz band
to see what settings you have and compare them to the settings on
other bands. Of course, turning the NB off for the 21 MHz band could
tell you right away whether that's the problem or not.

Just a thought.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and amplifiers such as ALS-600

2009-07-22 Thread Ignacy Misztal
MRF150 as used in ALS600 has 17db linear gain at 30MHz, and +20db on
20MHz and below. The gain is reduced to 9-11db across the bands by
swamping the input and by some feedback. It can be recovered by using
smaller or no input resistor and by removing or reducing the feedback
with a risk of some instability. Apparently ALS 600 does not suffer
from instability. The data sheet for MRF150 cites IMD3 at -32db in a
circuit without any feedback.

Linearity is another issue.

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY Dual PB

2009-07-22 Thread Lee Buller
I have had issues with this alsoon several levels. One, hen I have used
the feature, it seems the sensitivity of the received signal is diminished.
Second, I have found that the power output reduces by about 10 to 15 watts.
Not much, but still, something isn't right there. I have had no trouble using
my 500 Hz roofing filter and going down to 200 or 300 Hz and working RTTY. The
PB setting, although a great feature, has not "flipped my skirt up." Something
is not right. I have asked the questions about the power issue and they are
looking into it. This has been several months.

My question addresses RTTY (FSK D) and the Dual PB capability.

I understand the theory of what is being done, but I have yet to see the
advantage of Dual PB on an RTTY signal as opposed to normal passband.

I am curious if any of the RTTY ops have seen a definite advantage of using
Dual PB over normal passband tuning.

Sounds like the problem I had with K3 #202 in May 2008. KSYN3 board had
to be replaced. There should be no relay actions on the KSYN3 boards
within any ham band. Recommend you contact K3support. They should send a

[Elecraft] Audible relay click

2009-07-22 Thread k4fj
Hi,

I have K3 #290, purchased used last year.? I hear an audible click which I
presume is a relay when I tune from 14085.08 to 14085.09. This click is not
coming through the speaker.

I recall reading something about that on this reflector some time back but I
don't recall the reason or discussion, if any.

The K3 seems to work just fine and I love it.

Thought I would ask here before asking the Elecraft folks directly.

is a digimode program that itself runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

[Elecraft] K3 s/n 1169 21MHz band distortion

2009-07-22 Thread Jack Colson
I have noticed whenever I used the transciever on 21MHz (rare since band
conditons are so poor) a distortion of received signals. I listened to
the transmitted signal using on other receiver(s) and it is quite
noticeable. Especially when comparing the purity of the CW note on 14
and 28 MHz.

The recieved signal distortion is difficult to describe. The amount of
distortion varies from signal to signal. And it does not seem to be a
function of received signal strength.

I switched power supplies, no change. Switched from using an external
antenna to a dummy load and no change in the sound of the transmitted
signal purity.

I think the best illustration of this would be for me to call a service
technician and let them listen to it. That would at least let them hear
what I am experiencing.

Thank you for your assistance.

Okay, I am pumped and just had to share.  I finally finished up my Elecraft
KX-1 and internal tuner.  I headed to the park today at lunch and threw my
28 ft. wire up in the tree with a 16 ft. counterpoise.  I ran off the
internal battery pack.  I not been on the air for probably 12 years

I called CQ both times!  Keith - KB8FE & Darval - W7KNA - two much better
ops than I.  Thanks guys!

CW is VERY rusty - but I managed!

One of frequent authors in QST runs ALS600 with K2/10. He removed most of the
input resistors in ALS600 to boost amplification and runs almost full power

Re: [Elecraft] Big Coax on Dipoles

2009-07-22 Thread Wes Stewart
Re: 150:1 SWR.

I have an inverted vee style dipole consisting of two wires fed in parallel at
the feed-point, one cut for 80/75 (depending on some jumpers at the ends) and
the other for 40-meters. The feed is at about 45 feet above ground and the
low-freq dipole ends are at about 25' above ground.  The wires are displaced
horizontally (fanned) about 25 degrees from each other.

I have a pretty accurate model of this antenna, that has be confirmed against
actual measurements on the two bands using my N2PK vector network analyzer that
was calibrated at the end of a 50' run of cable necessary to get from the
antenna to ground.

The tower is about 125' from the shack so the total run of RG-213 is about 200'.

The modeled worst case SWR occurs on 20-meters where it is about 32:1.
Including the transmission line loss decreases the SWR to under 5:1 over all of
the ham bands from 80 thru 6 meters, with the worst case still being
20-meters.  The worst case line loss is a bit over 8 dB, with 20 and 10-meters
being the culprits.

Since I have a HB three-element Yagi for 20, that band is not an issue and I
can work all of the other HF bands using only my L4-B "active tuner".  I've
also worked about 120 Q's on 6-meters using the K3 (no tuner) and have about 20
states worked and 5 DXCC countries, including a couple of JAs on that band
using the same antenna.

(Editorial mode on: The JAs were worked on Field Day and I worked them about an
hour apart.  The first one was still calling CQ without success when I worked
the second.  So the band was open for DX but no one (except me) was listening.)

However, this is in no way an endorsement of using such a system as an all-band
antenna, even one fed with ladder line.  These antennas are at best
compromises, with generally unknown performance characteristcs, and at worst
not much better than dumy loads.

The feed point on some of those bands would see a 150:1 swr (no kidding)!
Your efficiency would be about 5%. Your tuner would still  see a low swr and
it will be an easy match because of the tremendous loss in that 100 pounds
of coax. Sure you can work stations, with that height you could QSO with a
light bulb,  but you would be 100 times stronger using ladder line plus you
wouldn't need 95 pounds of sand to hold up that lossy dummy load coax.
I'm feeding a 200' doublet with ladder line then to a 4:1 current balun next
to the K3. The K3's internal tuner finds a match on 160-6 meters and I have
very little power loss on any band. Now if I could just find a fertilizer to
make my tree grow another 50'!

If I read Steef's question right, it was not about erasing a stored CW
message, but removing a programmable function assignment from one of the
"Mx" buttons. The answer, as provided by KB8AP earlier today, would be
to tap REC, then the "Mx" button in question, then REC again

By the way, the function isn't stored in the CW memory - it's a button
override in firmware. The CW is still stored in the memory, and you can
regain access to it as above.

Re: [Elecraft] Max-Gain MK-8

2009-07-22 Thread HowardZ

Well, maybe I'm being a little picky here, but the "Arrow 2m/440m j-pole" is
not a j-pole antenna.
Arrow calls it an "open stub j-pole" - but it's a new creation and borrowing
the popular "j-pole"name.

Looking at the pictures - the vertical element which has the coax cable
attached to it - well this item appears to be complete insulated from the
rest of the antenna. Look at the parts list and there is a plastic
sleeve/washer that insulates it from the rest of the antenna. I think the
other vertical elements probably do nothing at all except to make it
resemble a jpole? Or maybe these additional elements are parasitic elements
- similar to a yagi's elements. How does this antenna work? I don't know.
That's why I didn't buy it.

Instead I got a co-worker to teach me basic plumbing soldering skills to
build a Super Cactus J-Pole antenna. It has more gain that a regular
J-pole. Including soldering tools, I certainly paid more than buying the
Arrow "open stub j-pole" - but I don't want an antenna I don't understand.
The Super Cactus J-Pole works well on my Winlink 2m RMS station.

Depends on the amp.
ALS-600 - no
Unmodified SB-200/220 - yes
FL2100 - yes

Basically put - check the voltage on the amp's relay line. If it is AC,
or a higher voltage, or if it is higher current to pick the relay, than
is specified in the K3 specs - use the ARB-704.

And, yes, you can use the ARB-704 with any amp, even though it may not
be needed.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and amplifiers such as ALS-600

2009-07-22 Thread Phil & Debbie Salas
"Is it best to use a buffer send/ptt device like the Ameritron ARB-704 with
the K3?"

Not necessary. The ALS-600 keying input has an open circuit voltage of
12VDC, and requires you to sink 100ma (or 70ma with the QSK mod) to key the
amp. Easily handled by the K3 amp-key RCA output.

If you have a new ALS-600, ALS-500 or ALS-1300 with the ARI-500 for
auto-band switching, the K3 band data output works great. You do need the
K3 TTL band data mod if you have an early K3 as the ARI-500 does not have
pull-up resistors.

The K3 TTL band data mod is also required for the THP HL-1.5 amp, but not
for the HL-2.5 (the HL-2.5 has internal pull-up resistors). As I recall,
the SPE EXPERT amp has internal pull-up resistors as well - but I'm not 100%
certain about this.

Re: [Elecraft] LP PAN

2009-07-22 Thread Dick Williams
Dave,

I purchased a LP-Pan and a E-MU 0202 a few weeks ago and had no problem
getting either of them working and interfacing DXBase. I wonder if you have
given Larry a call at Telepost?

The only minor problem I had was with the PowerSDR software. For reasons
only known to the "computer gods", it would not load correctly and when I
tried to run it, I would get three or four "fatal error" messages. I even
tried to un-install it and then re-install with no luck.

There was an easy fix that involved formating the hard drive and then
re-installing Windows XP (a "ritual" that should be done once a year
anyway). Fortunately, formattng the hard drive and re-installing XP is
pretty easy, but time consuming to download and install all the updates and
programs. With the fresh install, everything worked the first time.

I did have a couple of "procedural" questions, and a couple of quick calls
to Larry answered those.

It works really great and well worth the time and expense of installing it.

Re: [Elecraft] clear function from M1-M4 memories

2009-07-22 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Steef:

You should be able to remove a CW message stored in one of the CW message
memories with the K3 Utility.

I just erased one of my messages in M3.

I used the config menu, clicked the "Edit CW Memories" button, positioned
the mouse cursor somewhere in M3, clicked the mouse,
pressed CTRL-A to select all the text, pressed the "Delete" key, and then
clicked the "Save" button.

When I pressed M3 on the K3 front panel, the K3 transmitted nothing and
showed "End" in the VFO B area of the K3 LCD screen.

I opened the K3 Utility Edit CW Memories dialog again, and M3 was empty.

What happens when you do these steps with the memory you'd like erased?

No, you do not need it. I have an AL82 I am keying right out of the back of
the K3. Works fine. Usually, it is a 12 volt time for keying the Ameritron
Amps. I am not sure I would do that with just any old amp, but the Ameritrons
use 12 volt keying line and not the 130 of the SB Line.

Hi Paul,

I ran into the same situation for the first time last weekend. You
probably hit one of the M1 - M4 buttons while the TX EQ config item
with active. To restore your CW memories, tap REC, then tap the
memory switch you want to restore (M1 - M4), then tap REC again.

This is explained at the bottom of page 21 in the Owners Manual (rev
D4) in the section titled "Programmable Functions".

The feed point on some of those bands would see a 150:1 swr (no kidding)!
Your efficiency would be about 5%. Your tuner would still see a low swr and

wouldn't need 95 pounds of sand to hold up that lossy dummy load coax.
I'm feeding a 200' doublet with ladder line then to a 4:1 current balun next
to the K3. The K3's internal tuner finds a match on 160-6 meters and I have
very little power loss on any band. Now if I could just find a fertilizer to
make my tree grow another 50'!

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KBT2 Battery

2009-07-22 Thread thom2
Don knows from the K2 battery, he has a very informative article on his web
site about the care and feeding of SLA's.

I also believe that if you are charging the K2 through the power jack in the
back of the rig you are running through a voltage reversal diode before you get
to the battery, which is dropping the voltage about .4 volts or so and that's
probably accounting for the difference.

Re: [Elecraft] LP PAN as i see it

2009-07-22 Thread Phil LaMarche

I purchased the LP-PAN because I came from several years of owning the Flex
5000A and it uses the same software. I had forgotten how to use knobs.

Only had one configuration problem and a phone call to Larry, fixed that.
It has worked perfectly since and I love using it. I am spoiled with the
scope, especially on 6 meters for the reasons mentioned. On the other
bands, tuning is so quick with a simple mouse click. It puts the frosting
on the K3.

Many people buy the LP-PAN but get bogged down in it's complexity and end up
selling them. It's not "plug and play". You're dealing with:
1. K3 must have the KXV3 board, $99, installed.
2. BNC coax cable to LP-PAN.
3. LP-PAN $227 assembled.
4. Cables from LP-PAN to sound card.
5. Sound card (special). Not your average Soundblaster! I used the Creative
EMU 0202 external USB attached "audio interface". $100.
6. USB cable to PC.
7. Drivers installed for sound card.
8. PowerSDR-IF software from WU2X (download).
9. Configure, calibrate and choose from dozens of options and settings in
software.

I'm using LP-PAN here. Yes it took me quiet a while to make it all work. The
software locked up my PC. I had cable problems. I ended up changing PCs and
the one I have still isn't fast enough to actually use LP-PAN as a radio.
Too many pops and cracks but the scope is GREAT! I use it constantly.
Yea, you can set there and slowly twiddle the vfo knob across the band
searching for signals but with the scope you soon learn that you had been
tuning right past signals and didn't know it! All it takes is a brief pause
in transmission and you've missed him. Just a few days ago I landed on 6
meters and sat back and watched the scope. Soon a single blip appeared in
the cw portion for about 5 seconds. I clicked the mouse in the general area
and waited for about 30 seconds. Suddenly I heard CQ CQ CQ de W5VYH W5VYH K.

I snagged him. A distance of 625 miles. The only signal on 6 meters and CW
at that! It's the first 6 meter QSO I've had in 30 years. The band quickly
went dead and it was over.
Tell meWhat are the odds of me working W5VYH if I had no bandscope?
ZERO, ZILCHYou could wear out 100 finger dimples and never accomplish
that!
Did I mention my antenna? A 200' doublet fed with ladder lineThe tuner
in the K3 somehow found a match on 6 meters. BTW: That tuner is astounding.
It matches things that shouldn't be matched.

Yes I hope Elecraft comes out with a better solution than this cantankerous
hodgepodge of little black boxes, cables and weird software but until then
I'll keep on using it.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KBT2 Battery

2009-07-22 Thread Don Wilhelm
Paul,

That should be fine. The K2 itself is speced for up to 15 volts input.
If you want a refinement over the K2 display of voltage, measure the
voltage right at the terminals of a fully charged internal battery.

If your battery was not fully charged when you cranked up the power
supply, check the voltage over the next several days and re-adjust the
power supply as needed.

[Elecraft] LP PAN

2009-07-22 Thread Hector Padron
Sooner or later Elecraft will develop a small board to put inside or maybe
outside that taking the IF output will make it a standard NTSC format video out
to be seen by a simple video monitor, wait and see, that will kill not only the
old 7800 but also the new 7600 as well.
Don't forget our K3's are still a project in progress.

Re: [Elecraft] Big Coax on Dipoles

2009-07-22 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Good morning Jim,

Thanks for your e-mail. I also use tall trees to support antenna catenarys,
which are made from 6mm dia woven marine rope, along with marine pulleys,
and a counterweight at one end of each catenary. The counterweight for each
catenarys is "fused", so if another tall tree falls across a catenary or
antenna during a storm, the catenary/ antenna will come down under the tree
without serious damage, and the rope will still be running through the
support pulley which makes it easy to hoist again after the fallen tree is
removed.

At one time I used airborne coax feeders here but replaced them with open
wire feeders, after somebody shooting pheasant on the farm filled a coax
feeder with lead shot.

Try getting an adapter with an FTDI chipset. I can't guarantee that it will
solve the problem, but it did solve all the problems I have experienced with
Prolific chipset adapters, and one distributor of USB devices states that
