NO! FCC Rules give noise makers built into appliances and lighting
equipment a complete exemption from EMC rules.

Again, this is a topic for the RFI reflector. ALL of this has been
discussed there, in great detail, including by folks who work in the
EMC world. Like all the contesting.com reflectors, you can search
threads and read them from the contesting.com website. And you can
join if you like.

This sort of problem is, as we all know, common with many imported
computers, shipped with filters designed in but obviously missing.

Is this a sign that industry in general is prepared to save a few $ per
machine and have very few complaints from their customers? After all, as a
proportion of the population, how many would notice?

I posted an eHam article about this a couple of years ago. (In fact, if
you do "duet rfi" on Google you'll find me pretty quickly.) I get about
two messages a month from hams who have the Whirlpool Duet series and have
terrible RFI problems. Universally, when I advise they call Whirlpool and
complain, they report back that they were told that they were the first
person ever to report the problem.

On eHam, someone responded with his own article and I took the suggested
steps: AC line filter, better ground, some ferrites and wire re-routing
inside the washer. Plus I partially remodeled my house, put in a new
ground system, and put in a tower and yagi. The noise went from S9+60 to
S3. An improvement only by comparison.

Along the way I spoke with engineers at Whirlpool, received a whole
complete set of new innards from them, and did a lot of other research.
Despite their willingness to talk to me on the phone and send me parts
(which didn't help) I think th best solution is to buy something else.

It will be be interesting to see if the RFI list has a new, full solution.

2009-09-07 Thread Don Rasmussen
I've been stuck for a couple years now with a Whirlpool Duet front loading
washing machine. The internal MCU and switcher power supply trashes entire HF
at S9 +10, I have to use an MFJ-1026 to remedy this. Whirlpool Duet and Maytag
Neptune are notoroius for this with no known sure fire remedies at the device.

Happily? The wife is NOT happy with the washer, seems it acts more like a
dishwasher with respect to cleaning power, that it to say VERY light duty.

A tiny amount of water tossed about some dirty socks, well you get the idea.

I need suggestions on large capacity top loaders that habe a clean bill of
health in an HF environment.

Please email your suggestion to wb8yqj at yahoo dot com so I might "clean up"
my act before the bands open for the Fall.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] poor IMD on barefoot K2, even at low power

2009-09-07 Thread Don Wilhelm
Oleg,

With the K2, you should have zero ALC bars illuminated - reduce your
audio input level until the ALC bar does not illuminate.
Are you using SSB mode? If so, have you set the menu SSBC parameter to1:1?
You can set up the RTTY filter set (turn RTTY=ON in the secondary menu),
and you will have a dedicated mode for soundcard data modes. The
advantage is that the compression setting is independent of that used
for SSB.

Re: [Elecraft] Hi current

2009-09-07 Thread Don Wilhelm
Dick,

That current is definitely too high (except on 20 meters).
The most common cause for that symptom is the Low Pass Filters. Do
count the number of turns on the toroids in the LPF area - count each
pass of wire through the center of the core as one turn. I believe you
will find you have one extra turn on the toroids. A straight wire
through the toroid center is one turn, a complete wrap around the core
is two turns.

[Elecraft] Icon, Yeasu or ? Vs. Elecraft

2009-09-07 Thread Karl Marderian
The difference between the brands, sepic wise will never be night
and day. You cann't call any of one brand, junk.
The big difference between them all is company philosophy. Elecraft
builds on what they have already made. Even if the others do offer
frimware up grades here and there. The answer to major problems is a
new model. In cameras, electronics and Ham Radio, it is the view of
many companies that this way to keep the monies coming.
The Elecraft group is more proactive. The upgrades are both hard and
software. K1-3 owners are kit builders/hands on Hams. I love my K3 not
only for it's great specs, but that I known the radio inside-out. I
feel as if I am part of it's creative change and that Elecraft will
support it's modles for years to come.

One thing of note here is that the K3 evolves by progressive updates
that can be end-user installed. Most are firmware updates, but some
quite easy hardware tweaks. So the EXPENSE of this evolution of the
K3 is nearly zero, compared to the Icom path of just spending another
$10k for the next iteration.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK RTTY

2009-09-07 Thread Dave G4AON
Welcome to the K3 world Jim. I have used the one transistor interface
from the MMTTY "help files" built into a "D" plug. It uses 1 x NPN
transistor (any small signal one will do), 2 x resistors and 2 x diodes.
I no longer use the MMTTY program but recall not needing a PTT
connection, only the FSK one (from memory the PTT can be done via serial
cable, the normal one used for used for programming and logging between
the PC and the K3). I have a multi serial card in my PC so there is no
shortage of proper serial connections.

I no longer use MMTTY, but use Ham Radio Deluxe for sound card data
modes and that program only needs the serial cable and 2 x 3.5mm stereo
cables between sound card and K3 (the audio input on the K3 is "mono"
but the stereo cables work just fine).

Above all else, there is no need to rush out buying interfaces...

I have a K3 on it's way form Aptos that will arrive Tuesday, Sept
8th.would have here today except for a minor hiccup. But, not
complainingjust a lesson in patience. I've been worrying over the
assembly and operating manual the last few days. I like to contest using
FSK RTTY. Looks like the only way to get the FSK from the computer to
the radio is through the Accessory port on the radio. Looks like there
are several other functions that go through the connector. The manual
seems a little shy on how to gather all the data from apparently several
locations and get it into the connector. Is there a cable available to
do that or is one left to their own to fabricate such a spiderweb thing.
I applaud the built in interface isolation transformers only to find
myself faced with having to engineer and build a break out cable that
connects among several pieces of hardware. Do I have this thing all
wrong or do I need to start contemplating building a breakout cable?

Thanks for any help.

Have a good day and 73.

[Elecraft] [K2] poor IMD on barefoot K2, even at low power

2009-09-07 Thread dl0tuh

Hi,

I gave a test to my PSK31 setup today - barefoot K2 #5932 with M-Audio sound
card in my desktop pc. My laptop pc was connected to a FT-840 and listening.
Both used old good DigiPan.

I let my laptop measure IMD and also asked for this value during QSOs. In
all cases it's about -16dB which is very poor I beleive.

The power level is set to 5W. PC sound output level was decreased so that
only the first ALC bar blinks.

I also tried power levels setpoint from 0.1W to 15W. IMD value changed
continuosly from -19dB to -12dB.

Anything I could try/check to figure out the reason of destortion?

Lyle hasn't got it yet!!

Firmware 3.30 -- using NR (3-4) on SSB (14.178), first the volume
control did not work then after a little while the K3 goes to full
volume and only turning it off gets rid of the problem.

THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM!!! Hearing loss could result. Please got
on this ASAP.

Go to your local audio store and get a Sony MDR-V150 for little less than 20
bucks and those will last forever and sound better than the Heil ones, that's
what I have been using for about 8 years now.

Re: [Elecraft] MCU 3.30 DSP 2.26 and Loud Noises

2009-09-07 Thread David M. Elliott
Lyle,

Most of us understand that we are beta testers and what our
responsibilities in that role are.

We appreciate what you are doing and I will repeat again that the new
NR function is awesome -- better than anything else out there by a lot.

We are all anxious to help solve the noise problem.

In my case, the noise blast was preceded by a period of time (several
minutes) when the volume control did not work. I had it turned to
minimum and could still hear the signals at normal volume. When I
tried to fix that by twiddling the volume control and/or adjusting the
NR settings, the noise blast happened.

Thanks again for working on the holiday weekend.

[Elecraft] MCU 3.30 DSP 2.26 and Loud Noises

2009-09-07 Thread Lyle Johnson
If anyone experiences a "loud noise blast" from your K3 when running the
latest Beta code, it would help us immensely if you could supply the
following information:

1) Was NR in use?

2) If so, what was the NR setting (NR ADJ value)

3) Does the noise go away if NR is turned off?

4) What were your AGC Threshold and Slope settings? (CONFIG:AGC THR and
CONFIG AGC SLP)

5) Band, mode, roofing filter?

Please accept my apologies for this. Believe me, I *want* to find the
gremlin! Why else would I be asking about this on a holiday weekend?

Thank you for your patience with helping test this K3 Beta code,

Re: [Elecraft] MCU 3.30 DSP 2.26

2009-09-07 Thread Ted Roycraft
Yeah, I guess that sometimes we forget what the role of a beta tester
is. It's not to be the first one to have the new software. When you
are a beta tester, which you are if you load beta software, your role
and responsibility is to report problems and not to complain about
them. No software, newly written, is bug free and sometimes those bugs
can be downright annoying but that's what beta testers are for.

2009-09-07 Thread .k8dd.
You're right - the 3.30/2.26 NR, although it is slow, it is really good
once you find the setting that works best for the situation. And
although it cannot be readily duplicated, it is still a problem that
would most likely cause those who have had it happen to see it as a
major problem,
and not use that MCU/DSP set. I know it has changed my thoughts on
trying the "latest & greatest" beta firmware!

Re: [Elecraft] MCU 3.30 DSP 2.26

2009-09-07 Thread Bob Allen
Make sure you CC supp...@elecraft.com when you have issues to be sure
someone see the problem.
I was one of the first people to report this same issue with the last
revision of the beta and on my second post I included support which
elicited a response on the weekend and they started working on it then.
I have not had this happen since I downloaded MCU 3.30 / DSP 2.26 , and
yesterday I spent sometime seeing if it would happen, didn't come close
to doing at least as far as I could tell by listening to the rig, before
the loud, uncontrolled noise was preceded by distinctive audio that
sounded like cadisflies ( moderately high frequency oscillation), none
this time.
Speeds up the process you know and it is a process, thats why it is
called a beta release.
Sure stinks when it happens though and you are wearing the headset.
Almost sounds like a feedback loop but is that possible with a digital
radio?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK RTTY

2009-09-07 Thread John Seney
There are a couple of choices. I chose to use a 15-pin Y connector and
plug a microHAM cable on one side of the Y and a Top Ten Devices Band
Decoder on the other. Another choice is a little breakout board with
connectors for leads. And of course you can make up your own cable.
All of these have been discussed on this forum.

2009-09-07 Thread Bill Maddock
Fix needed?

This happened to me during the TN QSO party - I was on 80 cw trying to adjust
the antenna tuner when it hit - it was loud - no volume control, no signals -
Thank
God I wasn't running my headset  thought it was going to blow the speaker.
I shut rig off and turned it back on and proceeded with my QSO! Doesn't appear
to be any long term affect? This happened on my first K3 - was running

I was wondering about the reports of maximum volume audio reports on the

For the "Everybody Loves Raymond" fans - Frank's famous line sums it up:
