Unfortunately the PW-1 will only work with Icom serial
(CI-V) data. It does not respond to the old stepped
DC voltage like the 2-KL and 4-KL.

To the best of my knowledge there are only three devices
currently in production that will translate non-Icom
CAT data to Icom CI-V format. They are the microHAM
Station Master, microHAM microKEYER II and microHAM
MK2R/MK2R+ (SO2R controller). The discontinued microHAM
micro Band Decoder will also provide a CI-V output if
you can find one used.

All of the microHAM devices provide multiple functions
- they are not dedicated protocol converters - so they
are not inexpensive.

[Elecraft] K3 Resistance Check Failed

2009-09-09 Thread Jim Harris

Hi,

Yesterday I spent several hours assembling my new K3 to the point of resistance
measurements on page 45 of the assembly manual. U12 is reading 16-18 ohms
instead of the specified >500ohms. I've since exchanged emails with support
with the usual tips on trying a different meter, reversing leads, checking
connectors etc. None have changed the readings. I removed the front panel and
separated the DSP board from the front panel board. With the entire front
panel removed the resistance is ~5 k ohms. When plugging in only J51 (yes,
very carefully) on the DSP board the resistance is again ~16 ohms. Plugging in
the other connectors on the two boards results in ~ 5 k ohms. I've done a very
through inspection of the RF and DSP boards and have found nothing at fault.

I would appreciate any thoughts and ideas on how to reslove the problem.

Thank you, have a good day and 73.

Jim, W0EM

[Elecraft] Front load washer

2009-09-09 Thread r miles
In the 2 yr.s we've had a front loader I've experienced no noise problem. In 9
yr.s at this QTH I went thru 3 American brand top loaders.Poor construction &
quality control. I was finally fed up and bought an LG [ S Korean company].
Six months ago I bought a new K3. At last I found a top of the line product
that was made in the USA. I wish all things I buy were as well made as my radio.

[Elecraft] Re: [K2] XV50 vs FT817?

2009-09-09 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Peter,

XV50 + K2 is a high performer and FT817 is in no way comparable to this
combination.  However, if you just look for convenience, FT817 is handy and
will give you the flexibility of multi-band and mult-mode.

I used FT817 in the old days but eventually gave it up and replace it with my
K2.  In a contest situation, FT817 will receive everything but you cannot
select what you really want to hear.  K2 is definitely a go for contest when
compared with FT817.

Of course, FT817 is much cheaper.

cheers,

Johnny VR2XMC

主題: [Elecraft] [K2] XV50 vs FT817?

An XV50 + KIO2, adding on to a QRP K2, is getting within shouting
distance of the cost of an FT817.  Could someone comment on the
relative merits, for use as a first multimode VHF rig?  My guess is
that the XV50 is better, but does less.  In addition to just exploring
on CW and SSB, I'd want to participate in some VHF CW contests.

As mentioned elsewhere, the F5-x through F8-x mix some unprocessed audio
with processed audio.

Because the delay through the NR filtering is not deterministic,
depending on pitch and other factors, you may notice an apparent boost
in signal level at your chosen pitch, or a definite decrease in audio.
The CWT is using audio information, so the observation you make is
consistent with how the overall system works. A different pitch may
work differently at NR settings in the F5..F8 range.

In general, I suggest the use of F1..F4 for CW, especially if you intend
to use the autospot feature.

2009-09-09 Thread K2MK
I may have answered my own question. The signal amplitude drops with the
higher "F" settings and the dancing bar in the CWT display disappears more
quickly as I tune off frequency. When there is no visible dancing bar the
auto spot fails to work. There is no problem with stronger signals or if I
increase the filter bandwidth. My initial findings were with a 50Hz filter
bandwidth.

[Elecraft] K3 CW Auto Spot in 3.30 with NR turned on

2009-09-09 Thread K2MK
I've been playing around with the NR filters in 3.30 and I have found that
the CW auto spot feature is not working for all of the NR settings. As an
example, I tried the dash "2" range in all 8 "F" settings. The auto spot
function works perfectly on:
F1-2
F2-2
F3-2
F4-2
F5-2

It does not work at all (it doesn't even try) on:
F6-2
F7-2
F8-2

I usually have the CWT threshold at 2 but I also tried it at 1 through 4
with the same results.

Re: [Elecraft] antenna switch

2009-09-09 Thread Donald Butler
I've been using two B & W Model 594 switches in my shack for years. They'll
each handle legal limit power with good isolation and will switch either of
two transceiver/amps to either of two antenna systems. They look just like
the more common Model 593 3 way switch ... a small rectangular grey box
about 1 1/2" x 5" x 3" with rotary switch knob on the top and SO239s on the
back. Unfortunately they are no longer available, but I'm sure could be
found on the used market. And they do seem to last forever.

Re: [Elecraft] antenna switch

2009-09-09 Thread Dick Dievendorff
It's a good solution as well, and may met Skip's needs.

One important question to ask, however, is if you need the ability to
concurrently transmit on the two transmitters (SO2R or multi-rig
contesting). This also involves band pass filtering. A 2 x 6 switch like
the Array Solutions SixPak (and there are others, see Top Ten Devices
application notes as well) supports this concurrency.

[Elecraft] OT: RFI from Front Loading Washing Machines

2009-09-09 Thread Lu Romero
Dave:

First and last comment to this OT thread, but I couldnt let
your comment go past me without a small challenge :)

Obviously you have not lived for any appreciable time in
Central and Southern Florida, the lightning capital of the
world!

We have lost at least two TV sets, one dryer, multiple
computer monitors and other electronics to my Zap Cap
equipped home since I moved here from Pennsylvania in 1985.
Up north, I never had a problem! Havent lost a washer
though (famous last words as the 3:30pm thunderstorm clouds
begin to build...)

Its not just me, others in the neighborhood have as well.
Our club recently lost an Astron 35, plus the Icom ID-800
that was attached to it, and we have what I consider a very
good grounding system. ALL the rigs at the club are
disconnected from the antennas at our patch bay as well.

I have had several UPS's die to protect our connected
electronics at home and at work as well. Commercial class
big ones like a 10kW Best Power Ferrups at our Tampa TV
transmitter site. That one started a small fire.

At my former Television stations in FtMyers, it was a
regular occurence to replace parts of the transmitter remote
control system and WX radar after lightning strikes to both
our stations, even with high capacity isolation and streamer
dissipator systems on the tower, buildings and the Doppler
radar pedestal.

No matter how much you harden systems for lightning and try
to abate it with streamer dissipators and high capacity
grounding systems here, its gonna get you eventually.
Mother nature is just that way here.

We live with this daily in the summer, and ARRL insurance is
a must here.

You have Earthquakes, Mudslides and Fires. We have
Lightning and Hurricanes.

BTW, my ham station is directly adjecent to the laundry
area, with one of those office fiberglass filled partitions
between the laundry area and my op desk. Our Sears Kenmore
washer's transmission makes a trememdous whining ruckus when
on spin, but otherwise, all is quiet on the power front.
Same with the Sears Kenmore dryer.

Worst operational issue is the noise when the washer is in
spin cycle and my wife is drying something hard. Whine!
Klunkedy Klunk! Whine!

I have cultivated the headset habit.

I worked in the discrete semi industry (engineer and then
business
manager) for thirty years, dealing with most of the major
appliance
companies in Asia, Europe, and the U.S. By their own
statements, the
mechanical timer was far and away the most failure prone
component in
any washing machine. The appliance industry in general
resisted solid
state controls for a long time due to inertia and tooling
investments,
but the first area where they came to us actively seeking
help was to
replace that damn mechanical timer. They were just fed up
with the
customer complaints and the high costs of in-warranty
service calls.

Aside from people like hams who have all sorts of tall metal
outside
connected one way or another to their electrical ground
system, what
percentage of people do you think have their washing
machines zapped by
nearby lightning strikes? I can pretty much guarantee that
it is a
much, much smaller number than the percentage of mechanical
timers that
failed in the old washing machines.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] XV50 vs FT817?

2009-09-09 Thread Bill W5WVO
Peter,

There are no VHF CW contests, per se. There is usually some 50 MHz CW activity
in the June ARRL VHF QSO party and the July CQ WW VHF contest, but this is
probably about 10% or less of the activity level on SSB. DX chasing, on the
other hand, is typically more fruitful on CW. But chasing 6 meter DX with QRP
is
an exercise in frustration. DX signal levels are simply too weak for QRP.

For 6m SSB, you will want at least 100W output into a decent directional
antenna
to be competitive in the Low Power category of ARRL VHF (up to 200W). There are
no power categories in the CQ WW, so you're competing directly against the KWs
in this one.

Bottom line -- Outside of extremely strong 50 MHz sporadic-E openings, "VHF"
and
"QRP" don't really go together that well, though some guys do seem to enjoy the
challenge. For me, life is too short for 6m QRP. :-) I enjoy making QSOs too
much, I guess.

Good luck,
Bill W5WVO

[Elecraft] K3, KXV3A - DEM transverters

2009-09-09 Thread Bill Davis Jr

My first Elecraft is on order (K3). I plan a complete station rebuild around
the K3/10 as an IF rig for 2,222,902,1296 and 10Ghz. I wish to use my current
DEM (25w) 2m xverter with the KXV3A split RxTx @ about 10watts, for driving a
2m amplifier as well as a much lower power for the IF for the DEM 902, 1296,
10Ghz xverters. I have IF / Sequencer switching already for these bands using a
single IF rig.

For design purposes .. any suggestions or concerns? I will be building a
"decoder" to identify the transverter band for IF control logic.

 Direct email preferred ...

Thanks Bill K0AWU EN37ed

Re: [Elecraft] Decoder for use with K3 and PW-1

2009-09-09 Thread K4GM-George
You are probably right. I installed the K3 ATU four months ago and
since then have been totally spoiled by not having to manually tune my
external tuner from band to band. Yes, the K3 drives the L4B perfectly
but I still need to adjust the antenna tuner when using the L4B .
Depending on how much a decoder costs I might just go for the gold and
buy an automatic KW+ external tuner. Tuning the L4B from band to band
is no big deal.

2009-09-09 Thread Wes Stewart
George,

Sounds like you answered your own question.

I'm using either a TS-870SAT or a K3 with my L4B.  The '870's tuner will even
match the L4's input on the WARC bands and the L4 makes a dandy "antenna tuner."

I'm looking for a decoder to use with my K3/PW-1.    I realize there are
several options available but would like input from someone actually
using one before I buy.  The PW-1 has sat unused since I bought my K3.
Now that I have the bias mod installed I'm ready to focus on either
using or selling the PW-1. My L4B works so well and doesn't need to go
to the shop every time I accidentally hit the remote head or the
outboard tuner arcs.  All comments appreciated.

[Elecraft] SOC Marathon Sprint This Saturday

2009-09-09 Thread Bob Patten

SECOND CLASS OPERATOR'S CLUB MARATHON SPRINT

SOC Marathon Sprint
Most sprints run four hours, but since we're Second Class Op's,
we need more time!

Date/Time: September 12, 2009, 1800Z through 2400Z

Exchange: Member - RST, State/Province/Country, SOC Number
Non-Member - RST, State/Province/Country, Power Out

QSO Points: Member = 5 Points
  Non-Member, Different Continent = 4 Points
   Non-Member, Same Continent = 2 Points

Multiplier:SPC (State/Province/Country) total for all bands.
The same station may be worked on more than one band for
QSO points and SPC credit.

Power Multiplier: 0 - <250 mW = X 15
   250 mW - <1 Watt = X 10
  1 W - 5 W = X 7
   >5 W = X 1

Suggested Frequencies:

160 Meters 1810 KHz
  80 Meters 3560 KHz
  40 Meters 7030 KHz (and 7040 KHz)
  20 Meter 14060 KHz
  15 Meters21060 KHz
  10 Meters28060 KHz

Score:
Points (total for all bands) X SPCs (total for all bands) X Power Multiplier

Apply an additional multiplier of 1.5 if using a homebrew paddle (kits
such as the NorCal and AZ ScQRPions paddles qualify).

All entries are Multi-Band to promote maximum participation.

Entry includes a copy of the log and a separate summary sheet.
Indicate total time-on-the-air, and include a legible name, call, SOC
Number (if any) and address. All entries must be received within 30
days of the contest date. The highest output power used will determine
the power multiplier. Include a description of homebrew equipment
(including paddle or key), commercial equipment, and antennas used
with each entry.

Results may be posted on QRP-L and on the SOC Website. The final
decision on all matters concerning the contest rests with the contest
manager. Entries are welcome via E-Mail to N4BP ,
