[Elecraft] K3 Assembly-p32 VFO B Encoder: Trim 5 pins???

2010-01-13 Thread Richard Hill
Hello. I'm building K3 #3653 and hit a snag installing the second
encoder, VFO B. The instructions (page 32) indicate I need to trim 5
pins close to the PC board as part of the preparation to install the
encoder. I'm not seeing it. Does this mean cutting the pins after
installing the encoder?

I looked for an errata sheet for the assembly manual, but did not see one.

OK, what am I missing?

Thanks

Look forward to the sad day when I actually finish the K2, I am planning

I am intrigued. In what sense does the K3 outperform the K2?

[Elecraft] K3 and Centurion connection?

2010-01-13 Thread H. Cary III
I've just gotten a like new TenTec Centurion to replace my Heathkit SB-200. I
operate 95% SSB and am a bit perplexed about the connection from the K3 to the
Centurion. Yes, RF from K3 goes to RF In, that I know; the question is does
the Key Out go to the PTT/VOX or Key In. I'm thinking PTT/VOX but I don't want
to assume and screw this up! Anyone have this set up that can help? TenTec
offices are closed at the moment or I'd call them.
BTW, if anyone is interested in an SB-200 in good working condition, please
contact me off list.
Thanks and 73,

I got quite a few replies and I've sold these now. We'll see how well
I like the two 1.5Khz filters I just bought.. If I like them good
enough there are good odds I'll have 2 more 1.8Khz filters
available...

Thanks all.

[Elecraft] Cable for HL-2.5Kfx to K3

2010-01-13 Thread Bill K9YEQ
I had previously posted that I needed the correct cable for my amp and Bob
at Array Solutions emailed me and fixed my problem faster than I could bat
an eyelash. Got the right cable and set the amp for "Y" Yeasu and the amp
now tracks the K3. It also has the ALC cable with it and that also does
what I expect. Using the W2 wattmeter protects the amp if I have the wrong
antenna from my remote. Now all that is left is to get the remote situation
and the tuner to do that job. I am looking at both the HC 1.5Kfx auto tuner
and the Palstar At-Auto to figure out what to order next. I am somewhat
afraid of the MFJ-998 as I want a 1.1 to 1 or less and can already to 1.7 to
1 with the antennas I have. I will keep investigating. I am about ready to
pounce unless Elecraft would have something on the horizon.

Re: [Elecraft] Preparing for the Build of the K3 Kit S/N 3823

2010-01-13 Thread Dick Dievendorff
Hi, Steve.

1) I use little plastic snap-cover boxes that have small compartments for
small parts like this. I find my fingers are sometimes too large to get
into the 1x1" compartments, so I keep a pair of tweezers handy. I've heard
of everything from egg cartons to muffin tins being used. Just something to
keep the parts from wandering around.

2) The anti-static mat that Radio Shack sells should be fine. Connect the
mat to a wrist strap and connect the wrist strap to you. If you set the
envelope on the mat and then open it while you have the wrist strap on, and
the chassis is also sitting on the mat, then you won't have much potential
between them.

3) Almost any DMM will do. The checks being made are intended to catch
gross, destructive issues.

Take your time, and savor the experience! It will help to make you "one
with the radio"...

I recv'd the K3 and I am reading the instructions. I figured I'd ask some
basic questions on a few things before putting tab "A" into slot "B". (I've
already looked through the instructions to get an overview of what I should
expect and I'll read them again before diving into this)

1) A means to hold the smaller hardware- What types of holders or containers
do you guys use to hold the smaller screws?

2) Static electricity-I was going to purchase a static mat with a ground
strap. Some questions:
- Does anyone have experience with the type of static mat they sell at Radio
Shack?
- Is it acceptable to work on a wooden table top that has painted metal legs
and attach the ground from the mat to the table leg even if it's painted?

3) Multi-Meter: Is an inexpensive Radio Shack unit acceptable for measuring
the resistances that are discussed in the assembly manual? Does anyone have
suggestions about what model they would use?

As a side note, I've got my power supply (an Astron RS-35M) ordered so I'll
be able to hopefully conduct at least the "smoke test". The antenna will be
the next piece of the puzzle once the smoke test is out of the way.

Also, I'd like to pass my compliments along to those of you who've taken the
time to post you tube videos of their building experience. It's been
helpful.

As a general comment that is not of a technical nature, my feeling is that
this is going to take me longer than 7-8 hours to build. I'll let you know
how I'm progressing and if I have further questions.

I thank you in advance for whatever suggestions you may have.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: MH2 Mic

2010-01-13 Thread NZ0T

Here are the settings I use - worked out with a group on 1.947 that is very
"up" on all that SSB stuff.

1+4
2+1
3+1
4+2
5+2
6 0
7 0
8 0

Seems to need some help in the lower frequencies. I also use a RatShack
studio mic and it seems to need less highs also but not any bass boost. I
suggest you find a quiet frequency, a group of friends and work it out over
the air.

Phil,

Adjust the mic gain until you have 5 to 7 bars indicated on the ALC
meter, then add compression as you desire.
You can use the monitor to listen on the headphones (just remember to
turn the monitor back down to zero to use the speaker(s) or you will
have a lot of audio feedback).

[Elecraft] Elecraft K1.

2010-01-13 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

as you already know I have a new K3 just waiting for me to be assembled,
it misses about 3 months to do it. If no change to use K3 at home in a
normal way, because I have not antennas on my building because of my
"lovely neighbours", I am thinking to get an elecraft K1 for portable
operation and use K3 for contests outside home.

It is not for now, because I am in Afghanistan, but maybe end of the
year that I will need a K1, my intention is to buy an used K1 from an
elecrafter from this list, if possible of course.

K1 seems to be the perfect rig for portable operation since I do
exclusively CW.

If anyone pretend to sell an used K1 let me know, maybe later on we can
talk.

Best 73.

There have been two firmware changes since the original W2's were
shipped. You should upgrade the firmware if you have not. Many
changes were made in both new versions.

[Elecraft] Reflector

2010-01-13 Thread Phil Hystad
Yet another way to handle the large number of postings to this reflector...

I follow a lot of different e-mail reflectors, most of them are software
oriented where the new messages per day is in the low hundreds.

I handle this by redirecting the e-mails to folders for each of the groups that
I follow. Thus, my regular e-mail inbox is not polluted by excessive e-mail
messages.

This makes it easy to scan through the messages at the end of the day or
periodically through the day and pick out the ones I like. But, the real
advantage to this is that after a while, you start to build up a significant
library of good technical information local on your computer. In my case, my
search techniques on this local computer far exceed the methods available via
on-line mailing list archives.

I am typically hit by 250 to 350 e-mail messages a day because of the groups I
follow and I do not find this to be a problem what-so-ever. Oh, of course I
have fairly highspeed download (~20 Mbps) but even with lower download speeds,
performance is usually not a problem.

Dick, you don't need to subscribe in Digest mode and throw away the
digests. You can subscribe without any e-mail at all. I do that for
virtually all of the reflectors I am subscribed to.

The elecraft mailing list postings can be accessed from at least three

Bo,

You certainly are welcome to try pulling the crystal frequency with a
small parallel or series capacitor, but the stability may suffer - I
have not tried it, this is a theoretical guess.
Remember the crystal in all except the XV50 are overtone crystals - the
XV50 uses a fundamental mode crystal and can be pulled using normal VXO
oscillator techniques.

Bo,

The XV transverters can be daisy-chained for the key line and the IF
coax cables - see the diagram on page 12 of the Owner's manual.

I would think it would be easier to select the proper transverter by
merely pressing the power on/off switch of the one you want rather than
trying to reverse engineer the AuxBus code to select one transceiver -
But than I am not familiar with your skills nor your available tools to
decipher the AuxBus signaling required.

Of course, one alternative is to use an Elecraft K2 or K3 for the IF
transceiver. Either will integrate nicely (and seamlessly) with your
set of transverters - the K2 would need the KIO2 option, and the K60XV
option makes transverter use easier. The K3 needs only the KXV3 or
KXV3A option to run the transverters, everything else is in the basic K3/10

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Screen displays " ERR PTT " msg

2010-01-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Dave,

If you really mean that nothing but power is connected, then your K3 has
a problem and it is time for an email to k3supp...@elecraft.com.
But, if you have a key or paddle connected, or a microphone connected or
the RS-232 cable connected, try disconnecting those first.
ERR PTT says something is trying to key the K3 at the time you power on
- it will inhibit everything until the key closure is cleared.
Key closure can be actual key, paddles, PTT or DTR/RTS keying through
the serial port. Check that nothing is contacting the XMIT button too.

Re: [Elecraft] do I miss something...?

2010-01-13 Thread David Fleming
Hi Jacques,

Which sensor do you have? The 2W range is not available with the 2KW sensor.

The flashing SWR LED's indicates a SWR Alarm state. This happens when the W2's
SWR Alarm is turned on and the SWR is excessively high. You can use the W2
Utility or the W2 Interface software to turn the SWR alarm off. Sending an 'A'
command will toggle the alarm on and off. It takes a power cycle to restore the
W2 to normal operation once a SWR alarm occurs.

Be sure to use the W2 Utility to load the most current firmware, v 0.94.

Hope this helps.

主題: [Elecraft] do I miss something...?

Hello
I assembled a W2 wattmeter last december, but I had to spend a couple of
weeks in a clinic, and when back home, I tested it, but it did work as it
ought to !

When "power" on, no problem ; when tapping"range", the 2 watt led never
lights up. The others do normally.

If I apply RF via the K3, the whole line of the "power" green leds lights
up, whatever  power applied, and the SWR line flickers all over the range..

Has anyone an idea?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] IF output

2010-01-13 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Martin,

If the frequency of the LO signal applied to a mixer is higher than that of
the incoming signal frequency, as is the case in the K3's receiver on all
bands except 6m, then a received LSB signal will appear as a USB signal at
the mixer's IF output. Also a received USB signal, for example on 20m, will
appear as a LSB signal at the mixer's IF output.

If the frequency of the LO signal is lower than that of the received signal,
e.g. on 6m in the K3 case, this "sideband inversion" does not take place. A
6m USB signal will appear as an USB signal at IF.

Hello Jacques,

I had exactly the same thing happen to me last year when I had built my W1.
First I checked all my solder joints, all were OK. Then I started checking
the continuity of the PCB traces using the schematic. Simple job: if, say,
acording to the schematic one side of R4 is connected to one side of C5,
just put an ohmmeter across this trace to see if it reads 0 Ohms. That way I
discovered my PCB had one hairline crack that was virtually invisible. I
just soldered a small wire to bypass this trace and all was well.

Hope you find the cause of your problems soon.

Bonne année et bonne chance!

Stan, I believe this is a limitation of the current firmware. When band
independence of the sub receiver was added back at ver. MCU 3.03 / DSP 2.10,
3-17-2009, it was said that this would be so (for now). The firware release
notes stated that some of these limitations would be lifted in future
releases:

New Feature: Band Independence for the Sub Receiver

* MAIN/SUB RECEIVER BAND INDEPENDENCE. If CONFIG:VFO IND
is set to YES, then VFO A and B can be set to different bands. In this case
BAND UP/BAND DN will only move VFO A, but in BSET mode, they will apply
to VFO B. VFO B can also have a different mode from VFO A. Some RX
parameters can be set differently for the sub receiver when in BSET mode,
including PRE, ATTN, all DSP controls, and NB (noise blanker) settings.

Limitations: For now, NR, notch, and some other controls remain common
to both receivers. Internal text decode (CW, FSK-D, PSK-D) is available
only for the main receiver. Scanning still must be set up using both VFO A
and B on the same band. Memory recall only updates VFO A if VFO B is
on a different band. (Most restrictions will be removed in future
revisions.)

Bruce N1RX

I hook my TS-850 to the IF-output, it works fine.
Make sure your "panorama-radio" is not able to transmit into your K3,
e.g. use a RX-only input or modify it.

I set the TS-850 to USB when listening to LSB-sigs on 80m.

Why is this the case?

Have not yet verified if that changes when listening to higher bands.

Re: [Elecraft] RF Speech Processors

2010-01-13 Thread turnbull

Dear Lyle and Co,
I hope you do not object to what my asking a question to which I should
perhaps know the answer but do not. Just now my K3 is awaiting the DSP mod
board which I want to install prior to the second RX and ATU so another rig is
being used while the K3 sits on the blocks. In other words it is not
convenient to try this for myself just now.

1) Using the DVR can I record my audio post RF clipping.
2) When I use the DVR on the radio for TX audio is this audio used pre or post
the RF Clipper and Audio processing.

I suspect it is post processing and applied without any further processing
directly to the carrier so that listening to a DVR recording should be
representative of what the other guy is hearing. Double processing would be
madness. Still I am not certain and so ask these questions.

Appologies if I should know the answer to this question. I do find that
the monitor function is less useful because of course one hears one's own voice
through the body.

 Thank you for your advice.

Hi Wes

The HIGH BOOST on the TS870S was also very effective. Sometimes the HIGH BOOST
would operate and sound like a speech processor with a Heil HC4. A good pileup

Maybe a future firmware revision could add a HIGH BOOST feature.
