Re: [Elecraft] K3: ATU but a bigger version
Phil, I have privately requested the same as you suggest. Since there is already a full market of amps... would love to have the auto tuner to work with my THP HL-2.5. The THP auto tuner doesn't quite have what I would like. Even better, I would like a totally remote Elecraft tuner which works at/near the antennas. There are a couple out there, but the cost is amazing for the complicated wiring to them. Would be nice to be fully remote. I did that with an MFJ 994, which worked ok up to 600 watts, but not legal limit. 73, Bill K9YEQ K2 KX1 (Field tester); K3; W2; mini mods -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Phil Hystad Sent: Monday, January 25, 2010 11:03 PM To: Elecraft Discussion List Subject: [Elecraft] K3: ATU but a bigger version I really like the way that the K3 ATU works. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and W2IHY EQ Plus!
My primary goal was to eliminate the high level of background noise from my VHF amplifiers when I operate SSB mode. There are two main approaches to helping mitigate shack noise from Tx audio: Noise Gate and Downward Expansion. A Noise Gate, such as is used in the K3, acts much like an FM squelch does on receive. It looks at Tx audio amplitude and if a signal exceeds that amplitude, it opens the audio path for a certain period of time. Whenever an audio peak exceeds the threshold, the timer is re-triggered. Thus, continuous speech will keep the gate open. The timer is necessary to allow softer parts of speech to pass without distortion. Thus, the Noise Gate is not a clipper or waveform modifier and introduces no crossover or other distortion when it is activated. In this case, the speech overrides the noise source during speech, and the timer silences the audio path when there is no speech. However, if the threshold is too high, then leading edge distortion may result. A Downward Expander changes the gain (slope, or transfer function) of the input amplifier for signals below the threshold. This can result in crossover and other distortion for the low-level components of speech. On the other hand, it may also result in reduced amplitude of the noise source itself even when speech is present due to the slope of the downward expansion. Gating in the form of clipping occurs when the downward expansion slope results in zero gain. The most common misadjustment of the Noise Gate is to set the threshold too close to the noise source's level. This can result in the noise source triggering the audio, resulting in a scratchy or staccato effect. In most cases, *increasing* the threshold beyond that point will result in the desired squelching of the noise source, while still allowing speech to pass. 73, Lyle KK7P __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Some have had good luck with the ANC-4 but I personally did not. To do noise canceling internally to the K3, you would need a convenient way to adjust both amplitude and phase. Although amplitude can be done with RF Gain and ATT/PRE, there is presently no adjustment for phase. For ease of use both amplitude and phase adjustments should be large knobs which the K3's ergonomics preclude. For example the easiest to use NCC-1 is nearly the same size as a K3 itself! Re: [Elecraft] [K2] RX noise level
Sergey, I would believe they likely are OK - those numbers indicate that you have 12.95 dB gain for your Preamp, and that is near enough to 14 dB expected value shown on the schematic. Note that .013 V = -33.74 dBm and .055 V = -21.21 dBm - simply subtract the two. You should make some allowance for measurement error and round up to 13 dB. If you are concerned about the absolute value of the receiver noise energy, a measurement of that nature is not valid. Measure the MDS of the receiver and that will tell you how the receiver noise will affect your reception. 73, Don W3FPR Sergey Dan wrote: Hello I've measured K2's RX noise level (antenna terminated on 50 ohm, AGC OFF, AF and RF to max, DMM connected to P5), when PRE is ON N = 0.055v, PRE is OFF N = 0.013v. Noise canceling works best if the noise is a point source, although it can sometimes help reduce noise from a general direction (such as lightning QRN). http://www.dxengineering.com/Parts.asp?ID=1227PLID=215SecID=114DeptID=12PartNo=DXE-NCC-1 http://www.mfjenterprises.com/Product.php?productid=MFJ-1025 http://www.timewave.com/support/ANC-4/anc4.html If you have the KXV3 (the so-called 'transverter interface' which is much more than that) you can simply connect the noise canceller between the RX IN and RX OUT. This enables you to avoid using the kludgy relay in the device for t-r switching. The KXV3 does make it easier to connect the main antenna, but you may still need to protect the noise antenna input which is not routed through the KXV3. Bill, is that in order of increasing or decreasing effectiveness? Most effective is the DXE NCC-1 (also MUCH more expensive). The MFJ-1025 works reasonably well, especially if you do W8JI's mods below, http://www.w8ji.com/mfj-1025_1026.htm ...but it's more critical to adjust, has a higher internal noise floor and less robust front end. [Elecraft] My problem with K2
Hi all, I have build KX1 and K1 with no problem but with my (sn. 6871) K2 i'm in trouble. No problem with control board and front panel. I've performed the test of part II: 4 Mhz Oscillator calibration is ok. PLL reference oscillator range test is ok (Fup = 12099 Mhz - Fdown = 12086 Mhz - range 13 kHz) VCO test = 7834 Mhz (???) VCO alignment = no 6V at left of R30! Only 0.018V... and non change adjusting L30. :-( I rewind T5 and verified RP3 (PLL upgrade kit) with non change. Any one can suggest anything? Re: [Elecraft] K3: ATU but a bigger version (Bill K9YEQ)
Petr, Even though I am the one who started this thread with my question, I need to find out your opinion about the new Palstar Auto Tuner. It is pretty good from what I read and if you read the reviews they are mostly very good. Apparently there had been a few new product type quirks that were overcome by new firmware updates. 73, Lyle KK7P __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Thanks for bringing the notion up, Phil. It seems there is a fair amount of interest in a high power 'remote' ATU as well. If Elecraft takes up the idea of a high power (I'd enjoy a mid-power remote unit at present) ATU, it would 'seem' that the core components could be kitted in two variations. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and W2IHY EQ Plus!
Still, the adjustment is a bit tricky. A higher threshhold also has loss of softer speech as a side effect. When room-noise and speech approach the same level the gate has a rough time, a common situation in contests/fielddays with people and fan-cooled equipment packed closely together :-) Somehow I still feel a small modification to the open/close slopes could help the gate. A slightly less steep slope at the opening of the gate might prevent over-sensitivity to small spikes or self-modulation by room noise/ LF noises. A gentler slope at closing of the gate will prevent the switching effect you hear. A smooth slope (soft tail-out) would be much less noticable. As it is programmed now I can imagine people think they hear cross-over distortion, a bit similar to SSB with class C amplification. 73' Paul PD0PSB Thus, the Noise Gate is not a clipper or waveform modifier and introduces no crossover or other distortion when it is activated. Dean, thank You very much for Your nice tip. Unfortunately this unit is able to handle 600W key down and mainly the most important antenna's switch is not presented at all. Re: [Elecraft] K3: ATU but a bigger version
Oh yes! I find the K3 ATU just amazing and have often thought how terrific it would be to yank it out of the box and put it outside - and - how REALLY nice it would be to have it scaled up to handle at least 600 watts or even the legal limit - and - work seamlessly with the K3 - and - perhaps a KPA800/1500 (not to start up the we want our amplifiers thread - again!). - Actually, I'd settle for a KPA500 but that's another story! In this case, that means maximum cut of at least the two lowest octave bands. Depending on the response of the microphone, it's possible that the third and even the fourth bands should be cut. The best way to home in on settings is to have a good listener tune you in on a receiver set for wide RX bandwidth (at least 2.7kHz), make those cuts, and tell you when you have gone too far. What settings are right, particularly in the higher octave bands, should be made in this way. And when you're deciding, remember that transmit speech below about 400 Hz burns transmit power while making almost no contribution to speech intelligibilty. The octaves between 100 Hz and 400 Hz add body to your voice, but that's all. If you're ragchewing, you may want that. [Elecraft] the new guy in town
Well, I finally did it - bought a K3/100 kit. I have a K2/100 that I bought from Trey (N5KO) some years ago, and which I take on trips sometimes, but I have really, really wanted to get a K3 for a long time. My problem has been that I use a pair of FT-1000s (one D and one non-D) in SO2R and those two radios just keep on going like the energizer bunny. So, having just gotten a well-deserved bonus, I earmarked a portion of it for the K3. I was going to just leave the boxes unopened in my shack until I got back from Barcelona in mid-February. But, on Sunday morning I decided to open them up. Then, I did a quick inventory. Next thing I knew I was sitting there with an anti-static wristband dumping out the hardware in a white plastic dish. To cut the chase, last night (Monday) I came home from work and finished the kit. And, it worked first time. I think the kit is well conceived. There were only a couple of times I was cussing because I needed to put a 4-40 1/4 screw with lock washer in a place too small to fit my fingers. I felt like a brain surgeon trying to insert the screws with a long-nose pliers and dropping the screw or washer or both numerous times. But, persistence paid off, and it sure is a neat little radio. I have one question (suggestion?) though. After following the directions where you first button it all up without the KPA3, do the LP config and calibration, then pull off the top and bottom covers and install the KPA3, why not just finish the installation of the KPA3, first, then doing the LP and HP stuff, after. Since the KPA3 is not configured by default, you should be able to do the same config and calibration setups with it in place. Then, afterward, configure the KPA3 on and nor and do the HP power calibration. It would safe the hassle of first buttoning it all up, then having to remove the top and lower bottom covers, and then having to reinstall them all again, afterward. Not a big thing - maybe an extra 10 or 15 minutes? Over all, though, a very well engineered product and kit. Kudos to Eric and Wayne. Re: [Elecraft] the new guy in town
Rob, You apparently have a good deal of confidence in your building and assembly skills - that is great, but not all have the same confidence level, and the checks at the Low power level are important to those who do not also have that confidence level. The manual speaks to the lowest common denominator so those who need verification that the low power stages work properly will have that validation. The result is an orderly process - the basic K3 works, and if the KPA3 causes problems, one should look to the KPA3 or the steps that were done during the installation of the KPA3. For those who have great confidence levels (and good troubleshooting skills), you are free to do it any way that works for you. For the average K3 builder, the situation is not the same. Consider the K2 situation - I have confidence that I can find any problem in a complete K2, so if I build one for a client, I skip the intermediate test and alignment parts, and wait until the assembly is complete before beginning alignment and test. That approach usually saves me time, but at times it causes me to dig into the K2 to find what is the problem source. Yes, my experience level allows me to do that efficiently, but new builders do not have that experience level - hence the instructions are geared to test the configuration that has been assembled before moving to the next step. 73, Don W3FPR k...@baymoon.com wrote: Well, I finally did it - bought a K3/100 kit. [Elecraft] Any help with concepts about BFO and TX offset alignment?
Hello all, I'm progressing on my build of K1 #2822 and I've hit a conceptual block in my understanding of an aspect of the alignment process. I apologise if this has been discussed before on this list. I've read through the archives and can't find a very clear explanation. I'm hoping someone can help out. It relates to what I'm actually doing when adjusting the Tx offset with C13. This is what I understand to be true: I've chosen 600hz as my sidetone and the audio tone I want to hear receiving CW. I need to adjust the BFO frequency to be 600hz above the carrier frequency of the received signal, in order to hear that 600hz beat tone. If the BFO offset is set 600hz above the received carrier, then when I hear the 600hz tone on receive, I know that I'm zero beat with that station and that the frequency indicated on the K1 display will be that station's carrier frequency and also MY transmit frequency, key down. I adjust this BFO offset as described in the manual, using C20 and the K1's generated 600hz sidetone as the reference audio signal. This sets the BFO frequency at 600hz above the carrier. I've got a good musical ear, so doing that is not a challenge for me. What I don't understand is what I'm actually doing in the next step - adjusting Transmit offset, with C13? I think I understand the concept of the BFO offset, but I don't know why I also need to alter my transmitted carrier frequency. I see that C13 is pulling up/down the crystal oscillator frequency @ the Tx mixer. In the end, when properly configured, I want the frequency displayed on the K1 to indicate the carrier frequency of my transmitted signal. I want to hear 600hz audio when I'm tuned to the carrier frequency of a station I'm receiving. So, why is it necessary to adjust my Transmit/carrier frequency with C13? Sorry if this is a naive question, but I'm new to all this and have never had to think it through before. Many thanks to all, John VK7JB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Any help with concepts about BFO and TX offset alignment?
John, Spectrogram helps, so go to www.n0ss.net and read the details. Do the following steps in order: 1) set the BFO frequency to position the center of the FL3 passband at your chosen sidetone pitch (600 Hz in your case)/ 2)Then with Spectrogran still active, set the switch on the bottom of the K1 to the TEST position and adjust C13 to produce a peak response at your chosen sidetone pitch (600 Hz). That is all there is to aligning the TX offet to your chosen sidetone pitch. Set the switch on the bottom of the K1 RF board to OPER and go on with the other alignment procedures. If you choose not to use Spectrogram, then follow the instructions in the manual - both will produce the correct results - Spectrogram does provide a visual display that many find easy to use. After those alignments, you should do the CAL OPF on each band to make the received frequency correct on the K1 display. The order of these adjustments is important, attempting to do the CAL OPF before aligning the BFO passband and adjusting the TX offset will lead to frustration. 73, Don W3FPR Dr John H Farmer wrote: Hello all, I'm progressing on my build of K1 #2822 and I've hit a conceptual block in my understanding of an aspect of the alignment process. Re: [Elecraft] New K3, no Fast AGC it is same as Slow AGC
Turning off the text decode solved the problem, I now have a fast and a slow AGC. Thanks! Re: [Elecraft] K3 DRAKE R4C Emulation
Wow! Makes me want to build a physical R-4C shell with a serial interface on the back that's just a front end for a variety of modern rigs :). There might even be a market for the micro-controller kit! On Tue, 26 Jan 2010, Richard S. Lindzen wrote: Dear Don, That's great.
