Re: [Elecraft] Any Consideration of a Receive Only K3?
Actually, the K3/10 is far less expensive than its nearest competitors as far as RX performance from what I can see. Even to get close, you have to spend 5 grand (i.e. for a Flex plus computer, some of the top end rigs from the big three, etc). In fact, the only RX I've seen that exceeds the K3 on anything (at least on paper) is the Icom 7800 - and at that it seems to only have a higher IP3 and falls behind elsewhere. And that rig will blow a possibly fatal sized hole in your savings/retirement account, etc. Er, so I'm a little mystified by the thought that the K3 is expensive or just has too much stuff in the box and needs to be pared down? Seems like the highest bang/buck ratio, far far and away, available in amateur radio already from what I see. Just don't plug in the mike or key hi hi... 73, LS W5QD -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Any-Consideration-of-a-Receive-Only-K3-tp4704530p4708742.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Serial #4019 is on the air, and I have a few questions...
There are two menus in the K3, MAIN and CONFIG, both accessed by pressing the same button. You can either TAP (a quick down/up) or HOLD (for a second or two) a button. If you're not finding the CONFIG menu entries, are you sure you're turning on the correct menu? When you press the button, does it say CONFIG or MAIN? You have to hold the button for a second or two for the CONFIG portion. Then you dial thru the items with the B VFO knob. Re: [Elecraft] Serial #4019 is on the air, and I have a few questions...
Maybe the syntax in the manual is a bit confusing if you're not used to it... When the manual says CONFIG:TXG VOICE, it means that you have to look for the TXG VOICE entry in the CONFIG memory. In the same fashion, MAIN: LCD BRT refers to the LCD BRT entry in the MAIN menu. Hope this clears up some of the confusion. 73 and enjoy your new radio! Re: [Elecraft] Any Consideration of a Receive Only K3?
Instead of removing circuitry from the K3 for SWL use, why not add some... For SWLing the best thing that could happen to the K3 would be to add an internal mains power supply (for receive use only). Then the K3 would be a self-contained receiver instead of having to be tethered to an external supply. An external supply is an acceptable limitation for a transmitter but very unsuitable for a light, portable receiver. I suppose a 1-amp wall wart having a power-pole plug would do the job, as long as you are careful not to transmit. Still, I'm not too crazy about wall wart supplies-- got a whole drawer full of them. It would be great if the K3 had a standard IEC power cord socket so it could be used as a grab and go receiver. I went to grab the latest Prolific driver (2009/12/2) and loaded that I was able to get a connection. The Prolific COM5 port did not show up on the HRD until I set the com port driver properties speed to 34K. That part of this I do not understand but I will live with it. However, in spite of that properties setting of the speed, the HRD program would not successfully connect (and, read frequency) until I set the port speed to 4800 on the HRD connection dialog. Re: [Elecraft] Serial #4019 is on the air, and I have a few questions...
Thanks for all the replies. I've found the menu items I was looking for. I played around with it last night, hooked it up to my amp, and I think I've just about got everything set how I like it. It's a fantastic little radio and I'm still surprised that something like this is a product of the USA! For the money, I really don't think you can get any better from 'Yaesucomwood'. Now if only the Sun would cooperate. It figures, we've had good spots and activity so far this year...then I buy a new radio, and BAM no activity. I agree with Bill's comments about Perseus, I bought one last year to use primarily as a backup spectrum analyser. Not only is Perseus' performance as a receiver good in all modes, but it also does a fine job as a spectrum analyser and/or a panadapter, which would be useful to a SWL should she/he become licensed. Re: [Elecraft] USB/Serial Question
I would answer that with a pair of questions. What kind of iMac is it, and OS are you running? The Elecraft USB serial adapter uses the Prolific chip set. This manufacturer has not updated the driver for this chip set to run under Mac OS X 10.6 with the 64 bit kernel enabled. So, if you are running an Intel-based Mac with Snow Leopard, you may not want the Elecraft device. I use FTDI-based USB-Serial adapters from FTDI themselves. They are available from Mouser Electronics for $18.50 each. The current FTDI drivers are known good under all versions of Mac OS X, with both 32 and 64-bit kernels enabled. If anyone is interested, the Mouser part number is 895-UC232R-10. Now, having said this, there are many users who have been happy with the Elecraft adapter with the Mac using older versions of Mac OS X. No matter which USB serial adapter you get, though, be ready to update the driver directly from the chip provider. Every new version of an OS sees changes, and USB is an area that is prominent for change. That almost always requires new drivers... Re: [Elecraft] USB/Serial Question
I'm also a Mac user. Some months ago, I specifically asked the folks at Elecraft if there is any reason to prefer their USB-Serial dongle over others that are commercially available. They said no, there's nothing that special about their device. The real issue, especially for Mac users, is whether the manufacturer of the chipset used in the device provides good support to the Mac community in terms of updating drivers. The chipset maker who seem to have the best history with this is FTDI. It's not just a question of whether there is a driver currently available for OS X 10.6, but whether the chipset maker is known to be able to bring out updated drivers that function whenever Apple updates its OS. It seems as if every update requires updated drivers. Keyspan has been good about Mac support in the past, but when I upgraded to 10.6, my Keyspan dongle lost functionality, so I quit using it and switched to a product that uses FTDI chips. I would NOT buy a cheap USB -serial dongle from Walmart or elsewhere unless you can confirm that it's got an FTDI chipset. [Elecraft] Dual Serial Port PCI Card instead of USB adapter
I just read posts on USB drivers and have another option someone may prefer. I have an extra two port PCI serial card made by SGII (major brand). They publish drivers for a wide variety of operating systems (I am using XP Home and Professional, SP3), but you can check their website for Mac, Linux and other Windows operating systems. If you don't want to deal with USB-serial converters, this gives you a good way to connect the K3 and another device. I was using this before I came across an 8 port serial card (I actually have 5 devices connected...don't ask why) The upshot is that you can have my SGII card for $10 plus whatever it costs to mail it to you. [Elecraft] K3 and N1MM -- Macros to key K3 DVR
I asked on this reflector a couple of weeks ago if anyone knew of macros for N1MM to key the K3 DVR and some kind soul answered me with a link to go to. Alas, I lost that email and link and would like to get it again. This time I'll be more careful. Re: [Elecraft] usb to serial
Getting power from a USB port is problematic unless the draw is very light. More than one serial port driven from a USB is driving on the edge unless you know the circuit details behind the USB port. Sometimes even one serial port is an issue given the circuit details of what is reading the serial signals. It is very clear with various experiences with USB ports, that there are USB ports, and there are USB ports. The U in universal serial port ain't so U as it's cracked up to be. YMMV, all the way. 73, Guy. On Wed, Mar 10, 2010 at 11:03 AM, Wes Stewart n...@yahoo.com wrote: I have a four-port Edgeport and it works great for everything *except* the K3 utility. However, if I try to test communications or refresh port list the program simply closes. I resort to a Quatech USB-Serial for any firmware installs and keep my fingers crossed. Not sure if it exists anymore. They offered 4, 8, and 16 port versions that I know of. Gets power from the usb port, and serials can be defined as rs232 or 422. Supports all the hardware handshake lines. All my k3 connections are through this device under windows xp, and never had a problem. Hope this helps someone. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Jude KB5FSG I've used this combination and have been very happy with it. Everything fits in the buddipole carrying case making a nice grab and go HF station. I'd recommend getting an antenna analyzer to use with the buddipole, makes setting it up a lot easier. Alternately you could make a card with all the settings for coil taps and whip extension and use that, but I found that the settings are somewhat dependent on ground conditions and any nearby objects. I keep an MFJ-259B with the buddipole just to make life easier. Other than that, get on the air. Have fun. Best way to get good at CW is to use it often. I'm still learning, but I've found the process to be a blast! 73, Sean - VA5LF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
