Try sucking whistle rather than blowing and hold the mic away from the

Whistling is usually 20-30 db louder than your spoken voice. That's

Some people always want to believe they magically have the
only FT1000 series radio that never had severe keyclicks.
They get a little defensive to the first few dozen
complainers until it sinks in that every Yaesu made for a
number of years had a bad problem, and there were no factory
exceptions for any of the FT1000 series. It's more a matter

It also can be related to other parts of the system like

Re: [Elecraft] k3:TX Monitor-some odd sound -beta?

2010-05-04 Thread juergen
Hi Bill

Yes, I was using headphones. I will do further tests with the internal 2 tone
generator and see if I still get the oscillation. Unfortunately I have very
good hearing so every pip and squeak I can hear. Even with the sidetone running
I can hear that mysterious relay resonance when keying.

If Elecraft releases a mod or update I may try that at a later date. In the
meantime its of no consequence to me. I was unfortunately spending a lot of
time trying to EQ a mic and thats why I noticed the artifact.

Just noticed this when playing around with the K3's
 monitor.

  With the Gate off
  EQ flat
  MH2 hand MIC
  TX test mode
  Band 7mhz

While whistling there is a odd artifact. If I whistle
 I get a sound that
sounds  like a oscillator pulling in a receiver.
I dont get any odd sounds
  with normal voice testing

.With a continuous whistle I get this artifact
that  is a mirror of the
whistle, however it seems to shift frequency or pull
 the louder you
whistle. It might be a IMD  product? I have never
 noticed this before in
the K3's monitor. I will also check the clubs K3's and
 report back.

  Anyone else get this?

Are you using headphones or the internal speaker?  If
 the latter, physical
microphonic modulation of the VCO can cause spur
 artifacts.  I've never
experienced this because I never use the speaker, but I've
 noticed it on CW
signals from other K3s.  The audible PITCH tone can
 modulate the VCO causing
spurs at +/- PITCH setting.  I suppose the same could
 happen in SSB if
 MONITOR volume were high enough.

Elecraft has a stiffener/damper fix for the VCO board if
 this is the problem
 you're having.

It would be useful in Diversity mode if there was a way to adjust NR in both

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Bad COM port made K3 not work

2010-05-04 Thread Duncan Carter
W5JAW has a click free MP but he says making it totally click free
required much more work than just the common modifications - the fix
included a multi-stage ALC modification.

Two comments from Jim:

As I told you some time back, I worked real hard on optimizing the
keying waveform on my rig. It's as close to optimum as I could get
it; the result is Gaussian in shape. Very narrow bandwidth, yet still
clear copy up to 100 WPM. Due to the messy way that Yaesu implemented
the keying, it was necessary to modify several stages of the IF string
to achieve this without screwing up the QSK operations.

and:

Re: Key click mods: The W8JI mod does help a lot, but is far from
optimum. Much better than nothing. Because it depends on a simple RC
filter on the gate of a MOSFET, it provides a very asymetrical wave
shape. Also, since the transfer characteristics of the FET vary widely,
the rise/fall times do too. Also, I still enjoy QRQ operations, with
QSK, and these simple fixes don't work very well for that.

The other problem with these rigs is that even with good wave shaping,
there can still be a significant thump on the first dit of a string if
there has been a 1 second delay or more since the last character was
sent. This is due to the way the ALC works. The power level is
controlled by setting a threshold in this circuit. The attack time is
very fast, and will create a click, even with earlier waveshaping. I
solved this by decoding the CW mode from available logic levels, and
then, when in this mode, biased the ALC input just below threshold
level. This makes the first dit after a delay look same as any following.

I can always tell when someone is using a 1000mp with a simple click
fix. No clicks except at the start of a new word.

Dunc, W5DC

[Elecraft] Inertia

2010-05-04 Thread Grant Youngman
So, the CNC'd K3 tuning knob arrived over the weekend. I's a very very nice
piece of work, and regardless of the endless PM-ing about the price, it's in
line with other such products.

But this isn't about knobs, and I'm not trying to start another endless
twitter-like thread on the subject, although the subject does seem to be
lurking just below the surface of every ham's conscious. It's about inertia.
Yes, of course it's heavy and it does spin nicely. At first I wasn't so sure I
liked the feel and I went back and forth on the thing quite a few times. But
the more more I use it, the more I think it's going to stay on the radio.

So back to inertia -- an object in motion wants to stay in motion. And, an
object at rest doesn't want to jump up and get going, either (like me in the
morning) -- which is where an advantage is that didn't come up in the 4,763 or
there'bouts posts on knobs. I like a VERY free running control. The inertia
of this thing is such that a little bump here and there doesn't jar the tuning
half-way down the band. Well that's a bit of an exaggeration of course, but
the point is that even with virtually no friction against the felt pads, a
delicate touch is not required to keep it in one place once it's put
somewhere. Inertia is your friend.

I do worry (a negligible amount) about what the increased weight might do to
the panel bushing over time, but time is still along way off and bushings are
not an endangered species :-) YMMV

Re: [Elecraft] F/S: KDSP2 Assembled Board Manual

2010-05-04 Thread Jim bennett / W6JHB

Gary - thanks for bringing this to my attention - I'd have never thought
about it!! I may have all three components already - need to check the
parts bag in the morning. Otherwise I'll get those jacks ordered ASAP and be
sure they are included in the KDSP2 package.

Thanks 73, Jim / W6JHB
