Re: [Elecraft] K1 Alignment and Test Part I

2010-05-18 Thread Dominic Baines
Thanks Don and Elecraft support.

"The ATTN LED being stuck on is an indication the MCU is not fully resetting at
power on" is the message I got from Elecraft and they said check the MCI aka
16CPIC77 socket pins.

Apologies Don, I should have been clearer...

I expected the E27 and the E42 message should appear and why as the build notes
and the error codes explains them. What concerns is that the rig then seems to
lock up on a power cycle with the ATTN LED remaining on permanent and nothing
seems to fix it except a totally dismantle of the FP and RF boards and then
reassembly. But the fix is not permanent and repeats on power cycle.

There do not appear to be any solder bridges and I traced the pins from FP to
RF board for continuity but as it appears to be 'intermittent' It does seem to
be a solder problem on a pin of the main MCU so going to try and reflow all the
the socket pins including those under the LCD and check the MCU is reseated in
the socket.

[Elecraft] K3 Allband?

2010-05-18 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
how can i make a K3 transmit outside the ham bands?
I have a non-elecraft transverter covering 430-440 Mhz, i need to RX &
TX from 20-30Mhz. I guess i will also need the general coverage filter?

Would you consider building a simple L-C filter consisting of a couple of
resonators?

This would help to reduce the potential high amplitude spurious responses
present on the high frequency side in the 8215 kHz to 15 kHz mixing process.

Re: [Elecraft] Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit

2010-05-18 Thread George A. Thornton
By crash, I assume the whole system crashes and you get the "blue screen
of death".

According to a software engineer friend of mine at Microsoft, this is
usually caused by a driver conflict with the OS. Driver conflicts are
more common with the 64 bit OS. Drivers are written by the device
manufacturers and there is often a considerable lag between the release
of the new OS and the manufacturer's release of a new driver. Many
manufacturers have not gotten around to writing 64 bit drivers. That is
why I chose to stay with 32 bit Windows 7. Less problems.

If you are using an external sound card, look for a driver update on the
manufacturer's web page, and see if there is any discussion about
Windows 7 64 bit issues.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 VFO tuning range

2010-05-18 Thread Don Wilhelm
Rafel,

As noted in the manual on page 38, two values for C2 are supplied with
the kit, but other values can also be used.
Adjust the value of C2 to provide the range you desire and then adjust
the turns spacing on L1 to place the OSC frequency at or slightly above
3090 if you wish to cover the low end of the amateur bands.
Smaller values for C2 will provide a smaller tuning range. If you want
60 kHz, I would try 47 pF at C2 and see how close that comes.

[Elecraft] K2 S/N 1999

2010-05-18 Thread Ed Lambert
I have been inactive for about 5 years. My K2 is cw only with KNB2, KDSP2,
KAF2 (now uninstalled), KAT2, and KIO2.

I want to get back on the air and want to bring my transceiver up to current
specification for possible modification to K2/100. Discussion with Elecraft
staff at Dayton seemed to indicate that I really didn't need to do much to
my radio to install the KPA100 option. However, the KPA100 manual seems to
want a complete A to B upgrade in addition to K2KEYMDKT, E850138 and
BFOMDKT.

I have been stubbornly resistant to some of these upgrades because they
result in great insult to the inherent beauty of my radio (it has no trace
cuts nor does it have slapdash parts soldered hither and yon. I think I have
gotten past this squeamishness, however, and am ready to move forward.

My other possibility is to wait for the (I think) KPA500 and bypass the 100
watt upgrade altogether, hopeful that I will be able to bypass the 15 dB
amplification limits imposed by the FCC. (I have been waiting a long time
for the KPA 2000, KPA 1500 and KPA 1000, however.)

I would be interested in the experiences of those who have made the 100 watt
upgrade to an older K2 and also in the general thoughts of the 100 vs 500
watt option.

Re: [Elecraft] DM780 Crash with Windows Vista

2010-05-18 Thread Jon Perelstein
For those of you who are having this problem, are any of you running some of
the new Netbook class computers?  Generally, these have Intel Atom processors
(1.2GHz or so) and are short on memory (typically 1gig).

I've found that a lot of digital software products like DM780, Digipan, MMTTY,
etc. tend to crash when running on Netbook class computers.  This tendency is
especially strong if you're running RIGblaster or other interfaces that use the
internal sound card of the computer.  The problem is computer-related and has
nothing to do with which version of Windows is in use.

If that's the case, I've found that adding a second gig of memory will greatly
reduce the problem, if not eliminate it.  Also, switching from an interface
that uses the internal sound card to one with its own sound card/modem (e.g.,
SignaLink or a full TNC) will eliminate it entirely.

I've been able to replicate the problem on five different Netbook computers
from Acer, HP, and Dell using WinXP, Windows 7, and Windows Vista_sucks plus
different RIGblaster models.  In each case, additional memory mostly eliminated
the problem and switching to an interface device that does not rely on the
internal sound card completely eliminated the problem.

*

As for the comment about switching to Apple, I got a call over the weekend from
my daughter in college begging me to buy her a Dell to replace her Macintosh.
It seems that actually useful software such as statistical analysis software,
process design software, and all sorts of business software is only available
in the Microsoft world, not in the Mac world.

[Elecraft] K2AT to QRP Cover!

2010-05-18 Thread Jim Harris
Good afternoon, Folks.

I recently purchased a VERY FB K2/100 with KAT100 off e-Bay. It's an
unbelievable rig as you all know. With it came the QRP Top Cover with the
Speaker installed.

I'm thinking about building and installing the KAT2 into this Cover so I can
more easily carry it into the field or out to my patio. [I'm not a real kit
builder (only a couple of kits under my belt) or "tech type" but more of a
"dare to dream" kit builder: in other words, I'd like to give this
"build/installation" a shot as a way of occupying my leisure time & keeping
me out of trouble. I'm 79! :-)]

If this endeavor is more complicated than I envision, please feel free to
say so and I will get a pro to do it for me. [I AM thinking of going with
the "pro wound" Toroids by the "Toroid Guy".] If it's thought this might be
a "do-able", then also please feel free to warn me of pitfalls you know
about from your experience/s with this kit.

Thanks & Best 73.

Jim.

Re: [Elecraft] DM780 Crash with Windows Vista

Interesting, given that math/science applications are where the mac is
strongest. And you are aware that even Microsoft writes loads of software
for the mac, right? The Office suite has been available on MacOS for a long
time, for example.

As for amateur radio software, I too used to think the mac was pretty
bereft, but a lot of those holes are getting filled in. Elecraft supports

Re: [Elecraft] K2 S/N 1999

2010-05-18 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ed,

Yes, all the upgrades (and the optional ones too) is my recommendation -
why skimp when you have it all torn down. Although not entirely
necessary for the KPA100 installation, the added heat of the KPA100
makes the BFO upgrade, the PLL upgrade and the Thermistor (PLL
temperature compensation) mods are highly recommended. With an older
K2, you will have to modify the Control Board to change the sidetone
source and free U6 pin 25 for use with the computer interface, so you
have one cut right there that is required.

I recall our discussion at Dayton, and I also recommended you change the
IF crystals to the newer spec crystals too - that will improve your
filters, and if you want, change the caps on the KSB2 to widen that
filter out to 2.4 kHz or even 2.6 kHz.

I have no comment on the other amp questions.

Re: [Elecraft] K2AT to QRP Cover!

2010-05-18 Thread Don Wilhelm
Jim,

So you are 79! Congratulations, but age really has nothing to do with
building unless it has rendered you with hands so shaky that you cannot
insert component leads into holes and do a good job of soldering, and/or
if your eyesight has dimmed to the point where you cannot discern where
to place those leads - magnifiers will help if you are beginning to have
those focusing problems.

All kits, no matter how large or complex go together the same way - one
part at a time, let the instructions be your guide, don't skip around,
the Elecraft instructions are written in the best order to proceed and
have been field tested by a substantial group before release.

All in all, if you can read and follow the instructions correctly, and
can do a good job of soldering, then you can build Elecraft kits at any age.
If you don't understand something in the instructions - well, that is
what this list is about, feel free to ask and help will likely come
along quickly, and if you have trouble, ask about that, we can usually
help, but if not, an email to supp...@elecraft.com will bring you
further assistance.

Re: [Elecraft] DM780 Crash with Windows Vista

2010-05-18 Thread Alan D. Wilcox
Jon,
Hang on with your Apple ... you can run Windows on it. Assuming it's
Intel-based, which is the current production.

I need to run a lot of heavy-duty Windows apps (programming, database)
that aren't available for Snow Leopard. The solution is to run windows
ON the Apple.

Parallels http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/ lets you run a
virtual machine (a VM) on the Apple; you install Windows in the VM just
like you would a real piece of PC hardware. You can copy/cut/paste
between Apple and Win applications, run simultaneously (without
rebooting to the other OS).

Parallels runs satisfactorily in my Mac-mini with 2 GB RAM. Doesn't do
well with less. My main machine is a Mac-Pro with 6 GB memory, and it
runs perfectly. Have a PC sitting on the floor beside it, but haven't
even turned it on in months.

Bottom line, keep the Apple, run the Windows apps you need on it.

Cheers,
Alan

[Elecraft] K3 Allband?

2010-05-18 Thread Edward R Cole
Martin,

Exactly! You need the KBPF3 General Coverage board and KVX3 (which
it sounds like you have). Then go into Configuration and select the
KVX3 rotate the main VFO knob to select the TEST mode and exit
Config. The radio will not transmit on any frequency dialed up with
up to 1mw out at the transverter output jack (hopefully this is
sufficient drive for your UHF xvtr; I will be driving a DEMI 144/28
xvtr with my K3 at 1mw). Elecraft intended the TEST mode to allow
transmitting so that the Tx RF amp was disabled and no harm would
occur. Like code practise sending.

But it turns out to be a good sneak circuit for transmitting outside
ham bands (albeit at very low RF).

This is how I use my K3 to transmit at 500-KHz as part of the ARRL
Experimental 600 meter Group (WD2XSH). I follow the K3 with a 2N915
buffer amp which drives a surplus converted non-directional beacon
transmitter to 100w output on 495-510-KHz. Our group is only
permitted to use CW, QRSS, PSK and WSPR - no voice modes.

how can i make a K3 transmit outside the ham bands?
I have a non-elecraft transverter covering 430-440 Mhz, i need to RX &
TX from 20-30Mhz. I guess i will also need the general coverage filter?

I have four Apple Mac's in my house and two Windows laptops (one running
Windows 7 and the other running Windows XP). I also have Linux and Windows
(various versions) running under Parallels on my mac computers. Actually,
right now I am taking a break from writing a C# program under Windows 7
(64-bit) which is running on my MacBook Pro laptop under Parallels.

Also, on this Mac and also on my iMac 24 desktop sitting over on my desk, I
also run Mathworks MATLAB, and Mathematica, and R. For those who do not know,
these are all considered the top or best of the bread for mathematics and
statistics. R is statistics and graphics and is available for download, FREE,
to use on Linux, Mac OSX, and Windows.

In my work, mathematical analysis, along with solving non-linear systems of
differential equations and also solving optimization problems (using MIP), is
the norm at times. And every now and then I dirty my fingers in statistical
analysis using R although I will use Mathematica or MATLAB first.

There is no lack of mathematical tools available on the Mac and both MATLAB and
Mathematica have very nicely priced student versions.

As for process design I am not sure what kind of software that might be as a
lot of different things can qualify under that name. But, my favorite UML
design tool is called Enterprise Architect and it is available on Windows only.
I have only used this application under Parallels on my Mac. Although I have
windows laptops I have a tendency to use my Mac almost all the time. And,
there may be all sorts of business software available under Windows but again
you can run that on a Mac computer (if Intel that is).

Caveat Lector -- My Mac computers are quite robust with memory, 8 GB each. I
also run Parallels in a 4 GB memory partition and my Parallels virtual systems
run lickity-split. No, I would not want to run Parallels on any Mac with less
then 4 GB of RAM and I am not sure how it would run on the slower Macbooks, I
have a fast Macbook Pro.

[Elecraft] K3 Firmware Rev. 3.97: new DSP NB algorithm, improved TX INHibit, accurate S-meter w/AGC off, etc.

2010-05-18 Thread Wayne Burdick
K3 beta-test firmware revision 3.97 (with DSP rev. 2.58) is now
available. This revision has several significant improvements; see
release notes below. (Note that "QRQ" mode -- enhanced high-speed CW
-- will be in the next release.)

Please send any questions to k3supp...@elecraft.com. For instructions
on how to load beta firmware, see:

  http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 3.97 / DSP 2.58, 5-9-2010

* TX INHIBIT IMPROVEMENT: If TX INH is active (see
CONFIG:TX INH), voice monitor and CW/DATA tones are disabled,
giving the operator audible feedback about inhibited status to
supplement the flashing “TX” icon.

* DSP NOISE BLANKER IMPROVED: A new algorithm has
been added that makes the DSP NB more effective on
some types of noise. Odd-numbered DSP NB levels (t1-1,
t1-3, t1-5, etc.) apply the new algorithm, while even-numbered
levels use the original. To avoid unwanted interaction between
the NB and on-air signals, always use the lowest effective setting.

* CW KEYING ARTIFACT WITH AFX/DELAY ELIMINATED:
The “DELAY” settings of AFX previously created a small audio
artifact when listening to CW keying in the presence of background
noise or signals.

* AGC-OFF S-METER IMPROVEMENT: Turning AGC off no longer
results in a drop in the S-meter reading. This was most noticeable
in the presence of strong band noise.

* K144XV S-METER NOW ACCURATE: The S-meter reading is
now adjusted to account for RX gain when the K144XV is in use.

* TX NOISE GATE IMPROVED: The voice transmit noise gate
now uses a downward expander rather than simple gating.
See TX GATE menu entry for further details.

* MANUAL NOTCH: Pitch now defaults to 1000 rather than 2000 Hz.
This starting point is a better compromise between CW and SSB.

* ESSB ON/OFF COMMAND: The new “ES” control command
can be used to turn ESSB on/off via a switch macro or from a
software application. The K3 must also be in LSB or USB mode
before ESSB ON takes effect. (See K3 Programmer’s Reference.)

* BN REMOTE CONTROL COMMAND (BAND CHANGE):
Previously this command was “GET only”, returning the
present band number (00-24). It can now be used as a SET
command to switch to the desired band. For example, BN00;
switches to the last-used frequency on 160 m. Note: VFO B
will also be restored to its last frequency used on the new band,
except in the case where CONFIG:VFO IND is set to YES.

Wayne, does this meen I can't here the keyer when I'm in TX INHIBIT?

I use it as a way of practicing my keying, which isn't up to much yet, but if
you've stopped the feedback, I can't do that any more.

Also, it means I can't check my monitor level before going into VOX!

To me this is a regrade step to satisfy those that don't look at the display.

It would have been better to send a double-bleep or something as you attempted
to go into transmit.

Can this be made an option please?

Remember that TX INHIBIT is not the same as TX TEST. What you get when you hold
the right
side of the Mode button is TX TEST, in which the tones are not disabled.

TX INHIBIT is activated by either raising or lowering a control line connected
to the
accessory plug, and is used for such things as sequencing in moonbounce setups,
etc.

Yes.

You can use TX TEST (hold function of the MODE switch) to practice
keying as well as to check the sidetone monitor level. This is a much
cleaner way of doing it than using TX INH, which is intended only for
multi-radio inhibit use. Another way to check the sidetone monitor
level is by using PITCH.

Will these workarounds do the trick?

TNX for the explanation on the TX INHIBIT. Yes, it seems to work here ;-)
However,
it it too bad it is not remembered by band so it would automatically go into
effect
when one switches to a band where a separate XMTR is being used :-( For
example,
that is the setup here on 2m, using a separate receive converter fed into the
K3, and
a 100w IC746 as the XMTR. In the meantime, I have the 2m xnsverter output
turned all
the way down in power and terminated in a 50 ohm resistor.

Lance,

Add a bit of decode logic to the band outputs to decode the bands of
interest to you, and use the output to activate the TX INH for that band.
Yeah, I know it is not internal, but it is so easy to do. I don't think
there are many out there with this specific requirement.

[Elecraft] K3 - RTTY on 30 meters

2010-05-18 Thread John E. Reiser
Hello out there,

Yesterday a friend asked me to give him a contact on 30-meter RTTY. I had
never been on 30-meter RTTY before, but I agreed to give it a try. But then I
found that my K3 had no RTTY modulation_ just a carrier on 30-meters. The T-R
switching worked fine.

Let me explain that I have been using my K3 without a hitch in RTTY mode for
the past two years on the 20, 15, and 12 meter bands, and it continues to work
fine on those bands.

My K3 is # 384 running FW 3.97/2.58. I simply have two stereo audio cables
connecting the speaker and mike jacks on my notebook computer to the K3's line
in and out jacks. T-R switching is via the K3's RS232 jack and my Keyspan
USB-Serial adapter. My 30-meter antenna is resonant, with 1.2-1 VSWR across
the entire band. RTTY software is MMTTY.

The other odd thing that I observed was that my friend's signal was reversed on
30-meters. That is, I couldn't decode him without invoking the reverse button
in MMTTY. I later had a QSO with him on 20-meter RTTY, and he was not reversed
on that band.

Any ideas?

Many thanks and 73,

John, W2GW

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - RTTY on 30 meters

2010-05-18 Thread Iain MacDonnell - N6ML
Hi John,

You didn't say what mode and data sub-mode the K3 was in. It sounds
like you may have been in the "FSK D" sub-mode where you wanted to be
in "AFSK A", based on the facts that you heard a "carrier" when
transmitting and that you mentioned audio cables as your interface.
Data sub-modes are remembered per-band.

That doesn't quite explain the reversed tones, though... unless you're
actually setup to use "DATA A" mode on other bands, which is upper
side-band-like.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Allband?

2010-05-18 Thread David Woolley (E.L)
That (sorry top posting mandated here) depends on which country you are
in. If you are in a country where it is allowed, and Elecraft can
confirm that, you can ask Elecraft for the software to unlock it. I
believe, for the USA, that there will be restrictions on maximum power
around the CB frequencies, and that might apply generally, e.g in Germany.

I'd also assume that spurious emission levels would not be specified
outside the amateur bands, so you would have to make your own
measurements of the transmitted spectrum for the complete system.

[Elecraft] TV and computer interferencies - K3's fault ?

2010-05-18 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

yesterday evening I was calling on 17m when a lady warned me that I was
doing interferencies on her TV and computer. According to our ham law
when another Comm service claims against a ham interference we should
stop our activity until our Portuguese FCC cames and check ham
conditions here. She did not clarify me, and I did not ask, what was
wrong with computer. I know that she has a cable tv connection, but for
sure her TV-set was disconnected from cable system.

So I stopped and after a phone to CT4RK he advised me to stop my TXs and
call Portuguese FCC technicians. During our phone conversation he said
that deeply doubts that cause of interferencies could be due K3.
According to your K3 experiency could you say me if could be possible
that rig could cause that type of interferencies ???

My actual HF antenna is a 7m long simple wire attached to a 1:9 balun in
a spiderbeam pole through my window, very near building as you could
imagine.

Best regards.

[Elecraft] K3: Elecraft magic

2010-05-18 Thread Pete Connors
Not only are the firmware updates magic, the K3 Utility updates are too:

I have been whinging to Gary at Elecraft support about the latest K3
Utility RF gain calibration not writing the Sub RX gain calibration data
to the EEPROM on my K3 with firmware 3.94. We feared a hardware fault
and I had already enquired about cost and turnaround time when Dick
Dievendorff came up with a K3 Utility beta that promptly cured the
problem. It works with f/w 3.97 too.
I am awestruck; I do not believe that the Yaesu/Icom/Kenwood triumvirate
will *ever* begin to approach this speed and quality of customer response.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware Rev. 3.97: New K3 utility?

2010-05-18 Thread Dick Dievendorff
This is probably my fault. I may have updated the K3UtilityVersionInfo.txt
file in the folder that Wayne uses to create the beta version for an
unreleased version of the K3 Utility.

The web site K3 Utility version will work fine.

I had a similar problem when I built my K1. Same symptoms. I wish I could give

IF you have the new version of SDR configured correctly, and that's the

Did you have to enter any configuration settings in SDR, or did it pick

[Elecraft] K3 / Data & Remote Questions

2010-05-18 Thread Jim Bennett / W6JHB

Planning on getting a K3 around the end of the month. Recently sold an Icom
'756 Pro that I used with my MacBook Air to run MacLogger DX through a Black
Cat CI-V. Also ran CocoaModem through a Tigertronics SignalLink USB. Selling
the CI-V on eBay right now.

My question is, what'll I need to use MacLoggerDX and CocoaModem with the
K3? I figure I'll need to replace the Icom cable on the SL-USB for
CocoaModem, right? What about a connection for MacLoggerDX?

Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I'd like to get whatever necessary
before I get the K3.

Thanks, Jim / W6JHB

The SignaLink USB will not be of any use with MacLoggerDX. You will need to
get a USB-to-serial adapter for rig control.

If you already have a SignaLink USB, its sound card will work fine with the
transmit and receive audio jacks to the Line Input and Line Output jacks of the
K3. I would leave the sound activated PTT from the SignaLink USB disconnected
and use the VOX PTT that is already built into the K3 instead.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 / Data & Remote Questions

2010-05-18 Thread Phil Hystad
I have that same configuration...

1. Apple iMac-24 computer running current Snow Leopard.
2. MacLoggerDX
3. Elecraft K3
4. Signalink-USB
5. CocoaModem
6. And, the Prolific based USB-to-serial cable from Elecraft.

It all is hooked up and works just fine including all rig control with
MacLoggerDX as well as Signalink-USB for digital modes (although, I have only
done PSK31 so far).

The MacLoggerDX and the Signalink-USB though are completely independent of each
other in my configuration. They each have their own USB cables to the Mac
computer.

I am still using the PTT feature of the Signalink USB but in a week or so when
I get some quality time I will experiment with the K3 VOX just for the heck of
it.

By the way, even though the MacLoggerDX is hooked up and rig control works
great, I still do not use it on a regular basis. I keep forgetting it is there
and do things the old fashioned way. The nice thing about using something like
PSK and CocoaModem (and probably true of other digital interfaces and software)
is that you can park your VFO on the band (e.g. 14070.15) and never change it
and operate digital all day long without touching the K3 or even touching a rig
control application. Interacting with CocoaModem is all that is needed so rig
control is just not that important to me.

73, phil, K7PEH

P.S. And, thanks to Chen for helping me get into PSK and get everything working
correctly.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 / Data & Remote Questions

2010-05-18 Thread David Herring, K6DCH
Jim

Yes you will need a different cable for the SL-USB to K3. I'm not
aware of one available commercially, but it's not hard to make one. I
recommend cannibalizing an old twisted pair Ethernet cable. That and a
few connectors (for line in, line out, and PTT on the K3), and you'll
be set. Just remember to match your wiring to the SL's internal
jumpers (or vice versa).

I prefer to use the SL's hardware PTT wired into the K3, rather than
VOX, but it's a matter of preference. Either works fine.

For the MLDX you'll need a serial port in the form of a USB-to-serial
adapter. These have been discussed to death on this reflector, so scan
the archives and you'll get plenty of input on that.

Re: [Elecraft] Dayton purchase... K2!

2010-05-18 Thread 2rGarry

Good choice.

NO noise blanker here and none needed so I can't help with that. The K2 has
one of the quietest receivers I have used and I like it.

I have the 160 module and the ssb module and that's it. I mainly use mine
for cw so the ssb is not a particularly needed item but from time to time I
do get on the air with my 10-12 watt phone signal. The auto tuner might be
nice depending on what type of antennas you use. Might make that my next
purchase since I use open wire feed line to an all-band wire antenna.
