[Elecraft] Running the K3/10 at higher power

2010-06-14 Thread Edward R Cole
This question is really a spin-off from the "Power Control at 50-MHz".

I measured CW output with PWR set to max on the HF bands with my
Bird-43 power meter into a dummy load. I found that a setting of 12w
actually netted near 16w output 160-20m, but dropped to 8w on 10 &
6m. I didn't do a power calibration to set back the power so
wondering if there is anything negative from running the K3/10 above
12w? This really would be an advantage for driving the 20/300w amp
that I will be assembling. I don't expect full output with 16w drive
(maybe 240w) but that will net more than 12w would (180w).

I also find that in TEST mode I am getting 0-1.5mw output on 500-KHz
vs. 0.5mw cited in literature for the K3. I normally run between
0.25 and 0.62mw to drive my 500-KHz linear (50-100w output), so do
not run at the higher levels, but found it interesting that it output
more than a mw.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW Decoder [Suggestions for adjustment]

2010-06-14 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Joe,

If you've already narrowed the filter and tuned the signal in properly
(with the aid of CWT), the next step is to adjust the threshold of the
decoder. Hold the TEXT DEC switch, then use VFO A to adjust the
threshold until the CWT icon blink is closely correlated with the
incoming CW signal. You can set it to AUTO, too, but it takes several
seconds to acquire. I find manually selecting a threshold works best.

Of course if the signal is weak, noisy, or fading in and out, the
decoder will have a much harder time.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW Decoder, Not very good

2010-06-14 Thread Bill VanAlstyne W5WVO
So that begs the question, I suppose -- is CW sent by a keyer with paddle
machine-sent or hand-sent? It's actually both, of course. Some of the
metrics are controlled by logic (hardware and/or software), but
inter-character and inter-word spacing are controlled by the human operator.
In my experience, this is usually enough to screw up the K3's decoding
algorithm. And of course once you start talking about bug-sent or
straight-key-sent code, that's another planet altogether.

Developing a really "brainy" hand-sent CW decoder would be very challenging,
to say the least -- and even if you could do it, it would almost certainly
require way more number-crunching horsepower than is available in the K3's
processor. It's one of those things that fall under the label,
"Theoretically possible, but why bother?" There are many much more useful
machine-generated digital encoding methods available today. I think Morse
code decoding should probably be allowed to remain in the wetware domain. If
you "need" a CW decoder, let me suggest that PRACTICE has been known to work
very well when applied consistently. :-)

Joe.

If you are trying to decode hand sent CW. you will likely have to
provide a lot of "fills" unless the sending operator is quite skilled at
timing and spacing. Machine sent (keyboard or computer) CW should be
easily decoded.

Joe,
I do a LOT of RTTY work, and have since about 1972 and have tried nearly all
the supposed RTTY/CW decoders over those years and NONE of them have ever
decoded hand generated CW very well. They do okay on machine (keyboard)
generated CW, but hardly any copy on a fist. Humans just aren't consistent

[Elecraft] Volunteers needed to test new K3 Utility

2010-06-14 Thread Dick Dievendorff
I've made significant changes to the K3 Utility over the last few weeks to
exploit new MCU capabilities, and I need a few volunteers to test before
offering this version for general availability.

I need people to test firmware load, TX calibration, RF Gain calibration,
configuration save/restore and crystal filter configuration.

All functions that access K3 EEPROM (config save/restore, filter
configuration, command macro read/write) are much faster. For example, save
configuration takes 5 seconds.

Tx Gain calibration no longer changes the last-used frequency on each band.

The new Tx Gain calibration uses different techniques for MCU >= 3.97 and
earlier than 3.97. I need some testers for both before and after 3.97.

If you can help, please send a note to die...@comcast.net or
d...@elecraft.com.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] K3 SSB audio recording sent to me

2010-06-14 Thread Bill VanAlstyne W5WVO
After working 6 meters in the ARRL VHF QSO Party this weekend, a friend of mine
in Louisiana emailed me a receive audio capture, just a couple of minutes, of
me running a pileup (something I was able to do for hours at a time, due to
fantastic sporadic-E conditions). I guess there's no good reason why I should
have been surprised, but I was AMAZED at good it sounded! I was using a Heil
ProSet with HC-5, Tx equalization flat, and running about 25 dB of compression
with 5 bars of ALC on peaks. He was receiving me at S9+ levels, though I don't
know what kind of transceiver he was using. But it sure sounded outstanding.
I'm proud to be putting out an SSB signal that sounds this good. Well done,
Elecraft.

I'm with you Johnny:

Don's work continues to benefit us all...

I tool the opportunity to give my XV50 a run for it's money over the
weekend. 6 has really come into it's own here lately.

So far, it's working flawlessly. Mine is one of the first kitted and
has no vent holes in the covers. I expect I'll be doing something about
that soon. BUT, doesn't seem to be causing any ill affects at this
point.

Thanks Don for your efforts. I very much appreciate your work.

Hopefully, I'll see a few Elecrafters on 6 soon.

Check out the spot window on DX Summit. It's current info within 3
minutes 24/7.

Re: [Elecraft] K3- cw- pc program problems??

2010-06-14 Thread Richard Ferch
Chuck,

When the radio is in CW mode, it is keyed via on-off key closures at its
CW key input. It does not accept audio input when it is in CW mode. As
far as I am aware, this remark applies to all amateur transceivers,
certainly not just the K3.

However, unlike most other CW software, fldigi does not have any on-off
keyed output. Its only output is audio from the sound card. To transmit
in CW from fldigi, you must put the radio into an SSB mode that accepts
audio input (such as DATA A). Fldigi uses the sound card to generate an
on-off single-frequency tone, like a code practice oscillator, and this
tone output from the sound card is fed into the radio's audio input and
transmitted. When the radio is in a single-sideband mode (including DATA
A), the net result is in theory the same as transmitting true CW,
assuming of course that there is no hum, noise, distortion, etc. on the
sound card's output, and also assuming complete suppression of the
opposite sideband in the radio.

There is a way to use fldigi to transmit true CW with the radio in CW
mode, but it requires that you provide an external circuit to detect the
audio tone produced by fldigi and generate an on-off keying signal which
can then be fed into the radio's CW keying input. An example circuit to
do this is described in the fldigi on-line help at
.

When receiving in DATA A mode, the K3's internal CW decoder does not
work. This should not be surprising, since DATA A is the mode that is
used for arbitrary digital modes (every mode that fldigi can decode plus
many others), and the K3's firmware has no way of knowing what mode you
are trying to decode. To decode CW on receive, the K3 must be in CW
mode. Fldigi, on the other hand, can decode CW even with the radio in
DATA A mode, since you can tell fldigi via its menu system which of its
many supported digital modes (including CW) you want it to decode.

If you want to take advantage of the K3's CW decoding and other
CW-specific features, you will have to either use different software
that is capable of true CW keying, or provide an audio tone-to-keyed
output converter such as the one in the fldigi help file.

Rich VE3KI

[Elecraft] XV50 heating report.

2010-06-14 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Don,

Thanks a lot for your effort and the informative report.

I agree with you that the PA module should survive under the test condition.
However, I am not sure whether such a continous high working temparture will
eventually shorten the working life of other components.

I trust Elecraft will be happy with your effort as well.  Your work has greatly
reduced Elecraft's work load though they should officially confirm that the XV
transverters are perfectly ok to work under their advertised rated output (even
too hot to be touched).

As suggested by some of the Elecrafters, a retro kit with internal fan similar
to XV432 may be a solution to address this issue.

Through years in this reflector, I very much appreciate your contribution in
solving my elecrafters problem.

主題: [Elecraft] XV50 heating report.

I had promised several here in the Elecraft reflector some temperature
rise data for the XV50 a week ago, but had to delay it due to a failure.
Here it is now.

Conditions:  XV50 plugged for 5 watts drive = 20 watts out (attenuators
were dissipating heat).
This is a new XV50 with vent holes in both the bottom
and top panels.
Operation tested at 10 watts - keydown 1 minute, idle
for one minute (simulated FM
operation)  CW was actually the mode used.
                  Ambient temperature 23 deg/C.
Measurement made with temperature probe of Fluke 179
mounted below heat spreader -
The probe end was secured to the bottom panel with a
solder lug temporarily placed under a                          heat
spreader mounting screw.

Interval#      Start temp  End Temp
1                    23            47.1
2                    45.0        51.6
3                    50.1        55.8
4                    52.9        59.0
5                    55.4        60.9
6                    59.0        63.3
7                    61.0        65.0
8                    63.0        68.8
9                    65.0        70.4
10                  66.7        71,2
11                  68.3        73.0

After a 1 minute cool-down, a 2 minute keydown was measured
                      69.0        80.5

The time for the temperature to drop from 81 deg/C to 60 deg/C was
measured at 4 minutes.

The receive sensitivity was measured at ambient and at 60 deg/C - the
difference was less than 2 dB which is within the range of measurement
error.  Spectrogram was used for this sensitivity measurement with a
-140 dBm signal injected from an HP8640 signal generator.  The
difference between the signal amplitude and the receiver noise floor at
the filter passband peak was measured to determine any change in
sensitivity.

Whether this data indicates a problem or not is not for me to determine
- the XV50 has no temperature rise specified.  Yes, it does get hot with
the 1 minute on, 1 minute off cycling.  Too hot to comfortably touch.
Whether this cycling time is typical of your operation is also not for
me to determine.  A greater non-transmit time will allow the XV50 to
cool between transmit cycles and limit the temperature rise.

Mitsubishi specs the *operation* case temperature range to be -31 to 110
deg/C which is higher than usual, but in their datasheet notes at the
bottom seems to recommend that the temperature be kept below 60 deg/C,
so even that data is not consistent.  You will have to draw your own
conclusions about the differences in the datasheet.

Don W3FPR

Well, it turned out to be the Mac, or the OS X version of K3 Utility, or some
combination of the two that got it's brain frazzled. At Gary Surrency's
suggestion, I snaked USB repeater cables to the radio room from my office, and
installed the Windows version of K3 Utility and Keyspan drivers on the desktop.
Firmware update went without a hitch using Windoze, and the radio appears to
be none the worse for wear. No telling what really went awry.

But since I've already cabled the antenna ports from the Globe King back to the
switch panel, maybe I'll get more use out of the heavy iron while I sit by the
keyboard waiting for the KPA500 "order" button to appear :-) I had a chance
to get a good look at both the P3 and KPA500 at Ham-Com over the weekend.
Nice, very very nice. I'm rearranging the desk so there's room for both, plus
at least one more P3 sized box with a 500+ watt ATU in it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Seperate Rx Antenna

2010-06-14 Thread Brett Howard
When you say that it didn't work what did it do? If you have an
RX_ANT_IN on the back of your K3 then you do have the KXV3 or KXV3A
installed in your radio. When you pressed the button did you get an
RX on the display? Also make sure that you have enabled the KXV3 in
the config menu. If you've used it before then you've probably
already done this...

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3: REF IN

2010-06-14 Thread Brett Howard
This is very interesting! I'd not heard about this board but I did
see all the extra connection holes in the K144XV shield! I'm very
interested to get the feature to be able to use the subRX on 2M while
the main is not! This is one of the things I was hoping to be able to
do with the unit. Should allow me to wait for a sked or even monitor
a repeater if need be while scanning around on other HF bands...

WOW I knew it was fast when I tested but not so fast,I had a QSO with friend of

perfect,he interupted me several times while I was sending and I heard him

From the time of CW key closure to RF, I measure a blistering 7 ms, beating
the IC-7700 I measured by a solid 2 ms.  It's that kind of transition that
makes for super-fast QSK.

Well done.

Re: [Elecraft] KREF3 External Reference Option: Detailed proposal

2010-06-14 Thread Wayne Burdick
There appears to be more demand for this than we thought, so we're
looking into it again.

Note that our planned external reference implementation would not
require an exact 49.38-MHz reference oscillator signal. It also
doesn't require a pin-1 control voltage input on the TCXO module
itself, as suggested earlier. It should work with any existing K3
TCXO, either +/- 5 or +/- 1 PPM.

If you're interested, here are the details:

A new REF-lock module would be designed that plugs into the small 8-
pin connector near the top of the KREF3 PCB. The user's 10-MHz
reference signal would be routed from the rear panel to the TMP
connector on the KRE3 (this connector faces forward, into the DSP/
front panel area).

A microcontroller on the REF-lock module would be clocked by the 10-
MHz reference. If the signal were present, the microcontroller would
continuously measure (and average) the frequency of the 49.38 MHz
oscillator, obtaining a value to the nearest 1 Hz. Hysteresis would be
applied to prevent "hunting," so the actual accuracy spec would
probably be +/- 2 Hz. This translates to about +/- 1 Hz in operating
frequency on 20 m.

Approximately once per second, the module would report the actual
reference frequency to the K3's main MCU via a slow digital data line
(labeled "100HZ" on the RF and KREF3 schematics). The main MCU would
use this to calibrate the REF CAL value normally entered by the user.
There would be no noticeable impact on performance.

If the 10 MHz external signal were not present, the user's normal REF
CAL value would be used.

Let me know if you have thoughts on this implementation.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 4.03: "CW+" mode (Ultra-fastbreak-in; VOX-CW up to 100 WPM)

2010-06-14 Thread Paul Christensen
From the time of CW key closure to RF, I measure a blistering 7 ms, beating
the IC-7700 I measured by a solid 2 ms. It's that kind of transition that
makes for super-fast QSK.

Well done.

K3 beta-test firmware revision 4.02 (with DSP rev. 2.60) is now
available. See full release notes below.

The most significant addition is "CW+" mode. CW+ provides extremely
fast break-in (receive recovery between code elements up to about 70
WPM) as well as VOX CW operation at speeds up to 100 WPM. We added CW+
mode primarily for high-speed (QRQ) operators, but the new, faster
break-in applies at slower speeds, as well. Please give it a try.

NOTE: There are significant limitations to CW+ mode at present, as
described below. Please review them carefully.

Please send any questions to k3supp...@elecraft.com. For instructions
on how to load beta firmware, see:

      http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

* * *

MCU 4.03 / DSP 2.60, 6-10-2010

* 75 BAUD (100 WPM) RTTY SUPPORT: The built-in
encoder/decoder (DATA/FSK-D) now supports both 45 and
75 baud. To select the desired rate, hold the DATA MD
switch, then rotate VFO A.

* ULTRA-FAST BREAK-IN AND QRQ CW (“CW+”):
If you set CONFIG:CW QRQ to ON in the menu, the K3 will
provide extremely fast break-in at all CW speeds. It will also
allow both the internal keyer and external keying to work
at up to 100 WPM. (Be sure to turn on both QSK and VOX.)
The “+” mode icon turns on when CW+ is in effect.

Tip: You may want to assign the CW QRQ menu entry to
a programmable switch function (e.g., PF1) for quick access.
This can be done by locating the CW QRQ menu entry, then
holding PF1 until you see “PF1 SET”.

Note 1:  There are limitations to QRQ CW mode at present.
You cannot use SHIFT, or turn on RIT, XIT, or SPLIT. However,
you can still use splits, in effect, if you have the sub receiver
installed: Turn the SUB on, and use VFO B as the receive VFO.
(In a subsequent firmware release, RIT/XIT will be usable over
a small range in QRQ mode.)

Note 2:  If you use CONFIG:TX DLY to set external keying
delay, you may need to adjust its setting for QRQ CW use. Also,
any increase in the default (8 ms) may decrease the maximum
available CW speed.

* AF BALANCE CONTROL IMPROVED: The SUB AF control
can be used as a main/sub RX balance control (see CONFIG:
SUB AF). Previously, when the control was rotated fully
clockwise, main receiver audio would not be fully turned off.
This has been corrected.

* ADDED ERROR CODE “ERR RXF”. This message is flashed
if you switch to a crystal filter that is too wide for the present
settings. For example, ERR RXF will flash if you are in QRQ
CW mode and select a filter wider than 2.8 kHz. To correct this,
you'll need to turn off wider-bandwidth crystal filters either
manually (using CONFIG:FLx ON) or via K3 Utility.

* FIXED FSK-D STUCK TONE: Occasionally, sending RTTY
using the keyer paddle (FSK-D) would leave sidetone on.

I tried it and had no trouble copying using Cocoamodem on a Mac, and
MMTTY on a PC, as well as another K3's internal decoder.

I sent FSK using MMTTY and a RigExpert Plus interface, and had no
trouble copying on the Cocamodem/Mac and on antoehr K3's internal decoder.

Might just be a case of the wrong FSK polarity setting in the CONFIG menu?

Has anyone tried the built-in RTTY? When I tried it, I could copy other
stations perfectly but no-one would come back to me. Eventually I set up
another receiver to see if I could copy it and I found I had to reverse the
sideband before I could decode the text.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Failure of 4.03 to Update

2010-06-14 Thread Grant Youngman
I'm glad to know 4.03 loaded fine elsewhere :-)

I doubt the current problem has anything to do with 4.03. Something appears to
have died a sudden death during the upload process. No other firmware version
will load the MCU and pass verification either, and every attempt gives the
same error messages on the radio. Unless there's an unpublished set of "magic
buttons", I'm starting to fear the K3 may have to start a trip back to
Elecraft. In the meantime, I'm ordering another Keyspan adapter. And powering
up the boatanchor station for a while, since the K3 is dead and gone :-)

The "RX ANT" BNC connectors are part of the KXV3 module - are you sure
you don't have one?

There's a section in the K3 manual, starting on page 41, that covers
antenna routing possibilities...

[Elecraft] K3 Seperate Rx Antenna

2010-06-14 Thread Don Ehrlich
My K3 has no KRX3 subreceiver and no KXV3 transverter and I want to use a
seperate receive-only antenna for general HF operation.

Today I tried to use the RX-IN for the seperate antenna, switching to the
seperate antenna for receive-only by pressing the RX ANT button on the K3,
and found that it did not work. So I read the manual and discover that use
of a seperate receive antenna in this way is possible only when a KXV3 is
installed and is only for use with the KXV3. Am I reading the manual
correctly?

I clearly remember having done this before successfully on HF bands with my
stock K3 and still have the BNC-S0239 adapter that I used before to connect
my receive-only antenna to the RX-IN BNC connector on the back of the K3.
The only antenna-related change in the K3 since that time is the
installation of the autotuner.

Please don't tell me my memory is wrong. I'm too young to face the
possibility of having become delusional.

There is no state change on the K3 when a computer is connected (as
there might be on something like a camera or MP3 player). The K3 is
always listening for commands on the serial port. It doesn't "know" if
there's a computer there to send them or not. None of the other
functions of the K3 change when a computer is present. What value
would such a display indication add?

[Elecraft] K3 firmware, 3.97 beta vs. 3.97 production

2010-06-14 Thread Mike K2MK

I have a procedural question with regard to a beta release changing to a
production release. I had previously loaded 3.97 when it was listed as a
beta release. I just noticed that it is now listed as a production version.
I like to keep copies of the older firmware on my PC. Do I need to replace
the 3.97 beta files with the 3.97 production files or are they absolutely
identical.

[Elecraft] PC info suggestion.

2010-06-14 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

I like a lot to operate my K3 and it is soberb, however I see a lack on
it when I use a computer, could be possible to add an information that
indicates a computer is connected with it ???

For instance word "PC" in display. It is just an idea.

Best 73.

Re: [Elecraft] K3- cw- pc program problems??

2010-06-14 Thread The Smiths

If you download HRD Version 5 (best) you can use CW with RS422 control both for
sending and receiving. Receiving obviously going through your sound card.
DM780, which comes with HRD (ham radio deluxe) is like your FLdigi but lets you
key the K3 as well. It's a VERY easy set up, and there's NO need to use one of
those rig blaster units regardless of what anyone tells you.

Re: [Elecraft] Cover for front panel mic connector

2010-06-14 Thread Rick Dettinger
I found a metal cover made to do just that. It was at a marine store
and is used to keep unused jacks from getting corrosion in salt
air. At least, I think that is what it is for. It has a gasket, and
a small chain and ring that can be placed under a cabinet screw or
removed. I got mine for my K2, since I don't have any need for the
mic jack. The K2 didn't have a mic label, which, unfortunately, the
K3 does. :-)

[Elecraft] K3- cw- pc program problems??

2010-06-14 Thread callen1155

Hello folks.

I'm trying to get cw going with the K3 connected to a PC running a cw
program for both decoding receive and cw xmit via the keyboard. I'm using
the line-in/line-out jacks on the K3 for the audio and the fldigi program on
the pc.

The decode works decent when the k3 mode is set as CW but I can't transmit
on that mode. But when I change the K3 mode to DATA, I can transmit fine but
the receive/decode is garbage.

Anyone have the above working?. what PC program works?. K3 in CW or
DATA? Any other advice??

thanks and 73.

[Elecraft] K3 - KUSB and Mac

2010-06-14 Thread Charles Teeter
Hello:

I just had an issue with getting my K3 to communicate with the driver on my
iMac. I followed the directions on the Elecraft page, downloaded the
Prolific driver for Mac OS10, and ran the install. Sadly, it didn¹t work.
In trying to troubleshoot the problem, I spoke with a fellow ham, Rick
Prather, and with Gary Surrency at Elecraft. As it turns out, the KUSB no
longer uses the Prolific chipset, but rather that from FTDC. You can get
the set for your version of the Mac OS at
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm. After you download and install
this driver, you will connect immediately to the K3 via the Utility. Thanks
to Rick and Gary for their help.

[Elecraft] Firmware load failure 4.03

2010-06-14 Thread Grant Youngman
I've sent a note to support, but anyone offhand know what E 000202 in the A
display combined with ERR DSE in the B display might imply about why firmware
won't load? I know that ERR DSE means a missing echo from a DSP command.

Right now K3 Utility appears to communicate fine with the radio, but nothing
will load, not MCU, FP, etc. I don't think I have a USB/232 issue -- uploaded
a lot of new firmware over the past couple of years, and this is the first
problem. The radio is detected properly and loads seem to progress, but fail
at verification. Can't get past MCU at this point. Forcing the load doesn't
help. Radio is dead, except for a periodic "thump" in the audio and occasional
crackling.

[Elecraft] KXAT1 Operation

2010-06-14 Thread Schindele, William
I have successfully built and tested the KX1 with the 30/80 kit, but
I've had quite an issue with the operation of my internal tuner. I
suspected from reading the posts on the reflector that the issues are
generally toroid continuity at soldering points. I carefully removed,
retinned and reinstalled all the toroids. I removed the IC and applied
Stabilant (contact enhancer) and gained the ability to correctly adjust
the null. My current issue is accurate power indication. I get Po.0 or
Po.1. Though I can register almost 4 watts of power (using the dummy
load measurement and chart) I would expect a higher reading. Adjusting
the Fwd resistor seems to only have an effect on getting either Po.0 or
Po.1, and will on occasion seem to deactivate the ATU or put it into
error mode (---). When I was using the ATU to tune a Buddistick, it
appeared to work, but didn't give me a SWR reading (no 'r' display) and
on one occasion while scrolling through the menu I had the dreaded ---).

Now, before I throw in the towel, and order a replacement ATU, is there
an activity, resource, or exercise (say, tuning a known length random
wire) that I could use to determine if the ATU is working correctly? I
feel my inexperience is interfering with my understanding and confidence
in the ATU.

Martin,

I run a K2/100 with same mic and settings as you do. I speak right across
the mic face holding the mic right next to my mouth. I get many unsolicited
remarks about how good the audio is. I am using double bazooka's on 80 and
40 and a multiband wire antenna on the others. My power setting is 105
watts. You state that you have no RF earth. I would suggest that you try
grounding the station to get rid of any stray RF that might be coming in
especially on voice peaks. Other than that, the suggestions that Don made
will hopefully cure the problem

[Elecraft] K3 SWR reading fault with PA

2010-06-14 Thread John Petters
Hi Folks,
A problem occured last night.
I have the K3 with the 100 watt PA.
SWR with the QRP amp, i.e. below 12 watts is perfect according to the K3
meter.
When I increase power the SWR goes high and so does the current. I
tried this on dummy load and the same problem exists.
One clue - there was a thunderstorm fairly close by. It was a rumble in
the distance although the static crashes were loud. Does this indicate I
may have popped the SWR diodes?
Suggestions appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 74, Issue 16

2010-06-14 Thread amfmtv
Regarding the WKYC, Cleveland TV transmitter:

I can see the WKYC tower from my front window, about 2 miles from my QTH. WKYC
ended digital channel 2 transmission on June 12, 2009. I was standing next to
the digital channel 2 transmitter when they pulled the big switch. Until then,
because of my proximity to their tower, most of 6 meters was hash. They had an
interim 10kw ERP on RF channel 2. With the sunset of analog TV, WKYC moved to
RF channel 15, and 6 meters was quieter that it had been for several years at
my home.

There are a few digital RF channel 2 transmitters still operating, and anyone
within several miles of them will have some hash on the upper end of 6 meters.
Even though the out of band digital hash needs to be down some 80 db, 80 db
down from 10kw ERP from an antenna 1000 feet above average terrain is still
plenty of signal to wipe out weak signals on 6.

[Elecraft] K3 Beta Firmware Rev. 4.03: "CW+" mode (Ultra-fast break-in; VOX-CW up to 100 WPM)

2010-06-14 Thread Wayne Burdick

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 4.03 / DSP 2.60, 6-10-2010

* 75 BAUD (100 WPM) RTTY SUPPORT: The built-in
encoder/decoder (DATA/FSK-D) now supports both 45 and
75 baud. To select the desired rate, hold the DATA MD
switch, then rotate VFO A.

* ULTRA-FAST BREAK-IN AND QRQ CW (“CW+”):

[Elecraft] XV50 heating report.

2010-06-14 Thread Don Wilhelm

1 2347.1
2 45.0 51.6
3 50.1 55.8
4 52.9 59.0
5 55.4 60.9
6 59.0 63.3
7 61.0 65.0
8 63.0 68.8

Remove the ring nut from a spare mic plug, then blank off the opening by
filing the rim off a dime. A portrait of FDR will give your K3 that
extra All-American look.

Re: [Elecraft] KREF3 External Reference card

2010-06-14 Thread Jan Holmer SM6TUW

Hi
Someone pointed out that we all have different 49 MHz oscillators. I guess
that many K3 owners have TCXO and thus no input for the voltage control
i.e. VCXO. This pin is indicated in the KREF3 shematic as pin 1 (VCTRL) of
Z1.
My KTCXO3-1 did not have this pin and could not be used vith the reference
PLL so I had to replace it with a VCXO.
*The design of the PLL is fairly simple and can be built on a small board
plugging directly into J4.
*One has to consider the resulting phase noise and spurs of the locked
KREF3.
*The Kref 3 must also fall back into a default mode when the extref is
removed or if the PLL unlocks.

I wonder if the promised optional board foor the K144XV allowing lock of the
116/118 MHz XO to the KREF3 is also cancelled ?
In that case we need the K144XV shematic...

customer service we take for granted from Elecraft. Every "negative" in the
intitial review had already been fixed by firmware updates when the author
finally took the time to look. The only one found later was quickly fixed with
an update from Elecraft when he reported it. Try that with the other

[Elecraft] K3 Rev D Board Upgrade Install - no speaker audio

2010-06-14 Thread K4IA
My install went smoothly enough - until I turned on the radio. No sound
from the speaker (internal or external) unless I choose "phones plus
speaker" in the menu. Did have sound through the phones. Hmmm. Took it all
apart and put it back together. Here's what I found:

Even though all my pins on the headers lined up, I had not pushed the front
panel board on far enough. My screws were just a smidge off where they
were before when I put the cabinet together and that should have been my clue
 the first time.

Lesson learned, be sure you take the extra effort to push the boards
together and especially the two headers that are hidden behind the front
panel.
If your screws do not line up "exactly" where they were before, there is a
good chance you have not properly seated the pins. The pins may look like
they are going in the right place but if they don't go far enough into the
jack, they don't connect.

As for the performance, frankly without having two radios side by side to
A/B compare, I am just going to accept the fact it is "new and improved."
I need some more time to assess.

The popular ICE lightning suppressors do have a DC blocking capacitor, but
there is a
toroidal RF choke to ground (with a DC resistance of about half an ohm) on the
antenna
side. They also appear to have a drain with a resistance of about 130K on the

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft : K2 SSB audio quality

2010-06-14 Thread Don Wilhelm
Martin,

You may be driving the internal ALC too hard. With the MH2 mike, it is
rare to have to use SSBA higher than 1. Try bumping up the compression
to 3, I think you will like it better.

A HiCur message only relates to the base K2, not the KPA100, and means
the current set in CAL CUR is being exceeded. Make certain CAL CUR is
set to 3.50 and if the HiCur messages persist, check the windings of T4
and the LPF in the base K2 for any problems.
Of course, the LPF of the KPA100 is also in-line, so there could be a
possibility of a problem in that LPF too.
If it is a LPF problem, the HiCur problem will only occur on one or two
bands. If it is on all bands, look to the power supply and the cable(s)
and connectors. Everything should be tight. On SSB, the instantaneous
current change can be higher than with CW and if there is too much
resistance in the power supply system, the voltage could drop for an
instant and create a HiCur situation.

If you are setting the power control to "full right" instead of 100
watts, that could also be the cause of the occasional HiCur messages and
power overshoot. In the full right position, there is not as much
control headroom, the K2 is trying to drive "flat out".

[Elecraft] You

2010-06-14 Thread john
Congrats on your k...@. I finished K2 s/n 6959 this week after LOTs of help
from Don with the PLL circuit. I worked on the SSB and NB while I waited for
parts. I installed them this weekend and am now ready for the KPA100. This K2
really works a lot better than the two older one's I built. I'm looking
forward to having this radio for a LONG time. As I get more money to add to it
I'll put the DSP in it and use it for PSK31 also. I hope your build goes along
fine. I never worry about having a problem with their radios, you get more
help than anyone could expect and you learn more about the radio than just
slapping it together and it works. See you on the air sometime.

The most important thing in this is to always have a dc leak path to earth
on the antenna side of any "T" network or anything else that might add a
series capacitance. (Some lighting suppressors are a bad design with "dc
isolation" by a series capacitor on the center conductor.) We never want
series capacitance that prevents or blocks a bleed-off path to earth.

>From my measurements here on a 300-foot tall well-insulated tower, the
current is microamperes even in inclement weather. The ground path doesn't
have to be low resistance to hold the antenna to reasonable voltages.

It's the charging of antenna and any feeder or equipment capacitance (like
the antenna capacitor in a T network) that is the big problem, because when
voltage gradually builds and eventually becomes high enough to arc over,
that charged capacitance can dump a lot of current into other equipment.
This fast dumping of charge buildup is the major cause of damage to diodes
in SWR detectors and directional couplers. In a T network tuner it is the
output capacitor that charges and eventually dumps a spike back though the
other components.

The bleeds on the radio input ports are a great idea for stations with poor
or non-existent charge drains on antennas, but won't do anything once an
antenna tuner or some other series capacitance is in line.

A small high impedance RF choke, or even a 10K to 100K resistor (careful of
normal operating voltage and dissipation) is an adequate drain according to
measurements I made on a 300-ft very well insulated tower. (Without a drain
that tower would charge enough to knock me on my backside in just a very
gentle breeze on a nice clear day!)

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] - Odd SWR readings ANT1 v ANT2

2010-06-14 Thread GW0ETF

Joe,

Just been playing with this some more and there does seem something odd
about 28MHz.

If I do as you instruct the swr does indeed now indicate 1:1 on bypass to a
dummy load. However if I turn on the ATU and 'tune' it to match to an
antenna and then go back and check bypass into the dummy load I get a high
reading again. It's as if invoking the ATU to match the antenna is wiping
the 50 ohm setting previously set up - all other bands seem fine. ANT1 and 2
behave the same...TUNE power by the way is 10 watts.

[Elecraft] Elecraft : K2 SSB audio quality

2010-06-14 Thread Martin.Evans
Hello, I've recently started to use my K2/KPA100 on SSB running 100W
with an MH2 mike mostly on 80m. I use 2:1 compression and mic preamp is
set to 2. The antenna is an 120ft doublet, 30ft of 300ohm ribbon feeder,
remote mounted z match tuner right under the centre of the doublet and
approx 70ft RG58 coax to the rig. I have no RF earth but neither do I
get much RFI in the house. One end of the antenna is about 10m above the
operating position and I'm on the ground floor. I've had varying reports
on the audio quality. Here are a few things I have done/found:

Every now and then I would get a high current message after which my RF
peaks (as shown on the K2 bargraph) would drop right down. My remote
mounted z match tuner uses old broadcast receiver variable caps and I
think one of them might have been flashing on speech peaks. I have
backed off the power to 90W and it seems a lot better. The funny thing
is that when I run at 100W on CW I don't have any probs (ie no high
current messages). Is there something about the RF peaks on SSB, do they
overshoot sometimes or is it something to do with rate of rise of the RF
voltage?

When I first start an over on SSB the bargraph follows the speech
waveform and is what I could call "lively" but sometimes it goes very
sluggish and doesn't seem to be following the audio, is this normal.
Sometimes the bargraph seems to disappear altogether.

The antenna and tuner are balanced and I've added a choke balun and
various ferrites (inc 3 turns on the mic lead and 4 turns on the power
supply lead) to keep any RF off the rig chassis. I hold the mic about 4
inches away since I thought I might be overdriving the audio.

I did have reports of sounding like I was speaking through a kazoo but I
think I may have fixed that by moving the power supply (linear one with
big toroidal tx) a bit further away from the rig.

Some guys report that it sounds a bit scratchy.

I have checked the KPA100 biasing and it is spot on with the manual and
also the carrier suppression.

Unfortunately I don't have another rig to monitor my signal. I do have a
30Meg scope.

I don't think the audio is bad but perhaps not the best I could get out
of the K2. Are there any tests/mods/tricks I could try??
