[Elecraft] K3 #4536 arrives
Hi, My K3/10 arrived today and I have 10 hours in so far and am going to bed. Next step is mouthing the speaker. My fingers are not as nimble as they used to be but so far, I've only dropped three items, a screw, and two washers. All retrieved. The resistance checks were ok and the power-up went well. The only concern now is that phone jack doesn't pull up tight to the front panel and the washer rattles. Off to bed, get up in the morning and finish up. :Looks real nice so far. ...bc nr4c __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 #4536 arrives
Congrats, Bill. After you finish the build, then comes the real excitement. I had the same issue with the phone jack. The common wisdom was that the board wasn't seated properly, which was not true. I just let it rattle, with no known ill effects. When I did the DSP board swap I snugged it up with pliers and didn't break anything. 73, Mike NF4L On 8/5/2010 2:31 AM, Bill Conkling wrote: Hi, My K3/10 arrived today and I have 10 hours in so far and am going to bed. Re: [Elecraft] WTB SoftRock SDR
I do hope you find one Val because as a cheap alternative to a P3 it's excellent. I've had one for a while but the PC I was running PowerSDR/IF on was rather old and clunky and it didn't run very well; it did have an internal PCI M-Audio D66 soundcard though so it stayed something of a novelty rather than a useful tool. But the other week just for grins I thought I'd see what would happen if I tried my Samsung NC10 netbook with it's internal Realtek HD soundcard and to my surprise found it works really well, giving me up to about 90kHz audio bandwidth with no obvious spurs or images - and PSDR/IF runs really well too. Can't seem to find any specs for these soundcards so I'm not sure why it appears to work so well. So my shack has now been re-configured around the netbook and LP-Bridge; PSDR/IF sits on the netbook screen and my logger(s) on a second LCD monitor behind it. Used it in a contest for the first time last weekend and found it really useful, particularly for picking off stations off the second vfo. 73, Stewart, GW0ETF Val-12 wrote: I'm looking for SoftRock RX but it is not available at KB9YIG. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Installation Problem (somewhat OT)
Hi, I am using XP. When I view properties for *any* directory it shows Read Only although they are not. Maybe technically a directory (which is a file) is read only meaning that application software cannot write to them directly, only the OS can. That doesn't mean that applications cannot create and write files in that directory. AB2TC - Knut Mike-14-3 wrote: Hmm. My directory comes up with RO also, and I can also write there. Put a bit of squeeze pressure between the DSP board and the front panel metalwork, then tighten the nut with your fingers. If that does not tighten the washer, you will have to add a supplemental washer, usually a thin one will do the job. 73, Don W3FPR Bill Conkling wrote: The only concern now is that phone jack doesn't pull up tight to the front panel and the washer rattles. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Mike, I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials. However, this morning I opened an email from Dick Dievendorff asking 'What happens if you attempt a direct install from the download source live (not saved file)?' I attempted that and the K3 Utility seems to have installed fine. For what it's worth, last evening's K3 Memory Editor installed fine from an adjacent parallel folder. If I have the problem again, I'll try shutting down MSE. Thanks for the suggestion. 73, Dick - KA5KKT A shot in the dark. What anti-virus are you using? Try turning it off, and run the install. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Frequency Memory Editor
Dick has done a terrific job. I had lots of irregularities in my settings. When initially setting the memories I obviously took little note of what VFO B was doing. I had strange VFO B frequencies and modes which always messed me up when I went split. Dick's program provides that much needed visual listing. I also had inconsistencies in how I set up the band segment buttons and I was able to clean up my scan ranges which were in a state of chaos. 73, Mike K2MK -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Frequency-Memory-Editor-tp5374927p5376551.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Installation Problem (somewhat OT)
You're looking at the properties of the directory. Not the files in the directory or other directories within the directory. Every object has its own access rights properties. Rights may or may not be inherited from the next level higher object. The Users directory is a system directory. It would be disastrous to rename it. If you look at a file in the directory with the same name as your userid, you will see that it probably is not Read-Only. Doug -- K0DXV On 8/4/2010 9:29 PM, Mike wrote: Hmm. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility Installation Problem (somewhat OT)
A directory is not a file. It is only an item in the file control system table. You're assuming that the properties of the directory dictate the access control level of the files associated with it. This isn't the case. You can't write to a directory the same way you can write to a file. Therefore, it is read-only. A directory looks like a container but its not. It is an association or an attribute of a file. Doug -- K0DXV On 8/5/2010 5:58 AM, ab2tc wrote: Hi, I am using XP. Thanks Microsoft... I use InnoSetup for my installs, and it has a constant that will put writable files in the proper directory, and I am pretty sure it unpacks the install (by default) into temp. No problems with it so far on WIn7. I'm puzzled. Installation of the .zip version of the Freq Mem Editor failed on my Win98SE machine. I unzipped in my own temporary directory (nonstandard name) and double-clicked setup.exe as instructed. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Frequency Memory Editor with Win98SE
The K3 Frequency Memory Editor requires the Windows .Net framework (2.0). It can be installed from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d- 8edd-aab15c5e04f5displaylang=en The setup.exe and K3FreqMemoryEditor.msi files should be in the same directory. Setup.exe looks for it there. It appears that we currently require Windows Installer 3.1 or later. I'll see if I can influence that. Windows Installer 3.1 is an Windows 2000 and later product, Installer 2.0 is available for Windows 98 SE. Can you try installing Windows Installer 2.0 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=enFamilyID=cebb acd8-c094-4255-b702-de3bb768148f I'll do some poking around to see if I can offer a Windows 98 SE version. [Elecraft] P3 Markers
I just finished reading the P3 manual and I'm curious about the implementation of the marker and 'tap functions. Does the current P3 firmware allow for snapping to the nearest peak signal in CW and PSK modes? For example, say I'm interested in moving the marker close to a desired PSK signal but I overshoot a bit. Will the P3 work with the K3 to snap to the PSK center as do some PSK software programs? As I recall, CWGet has a similar snapping and AFC feature. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Frequency Memory Editor with Win98SE
Well, the .Net Framework is supposed to work on Windows 98 SE, so I can at least give it a try, if the prerequisite software is installed and does the job. I'm still using Visual Studio 2005 (and not 2008 or 2010) for the Elecraft utilities because the newer compilers generate EXEs that don't run on Windows 98 SE or Windows ME. I'm aware that at least some of our community migrates older-but-working-fine systems into the radio shack... But I can't ignore the development productivity I get from using a modern runtime library, and I needed a grid control for this effort. The .Net framework's grid control is adequate and is free for customers. 73 de Dick, K6KR -Original Message- From: Joe Subich, W4TV [mailto:li...@subich.com] Sent: Thursday, August 05, 2010 9:23 AM To: Elecraft Reflector; die...@comcast.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Frequency Memory Editor with Win98SE Dick, I'll do some poking around to see if I can offer a Windows 98 SE version. [Elecraft] Slightly OT: Handbook Sierra band module connector?
Greetings Elecrafters, Sorry for the Slightly OT post but I thought this list would be possible resource given the Sierra's relationship to the Elecraft product line. Being a tinkerer at heart, I picked up one of the FAR Circuits Sierra PC boards and several band module boards at a hamfest a while back. Thanks to access to several well-stocked junkboxes I've been able to source most of the common stuff. However, the one item I'm running into an issue with is the notorious edge card connector. Digi-Key lists what is supposedly an ROHS compliant sub for the original part, but it's non-stock with a minimum quantity of 10. Needless to say, I'm not really inclined to spend $80+ and then have 9 spare connectors around just to get the one I need I've thought about trying to engineer a substitute out of individual pins with a redesigned band module board sitting horizontally instead of vertically (hope I'm making sense here!) Any comments on that, or does anyone have a reasonably priced single-quantity source for the connector or maybe one floating around in a junkbox? (New or experienced is OK as long as it is the correct fit and useable.) Thanks to access to several well-stocked junkboxes I've been able to source most of the common stuff. However, the one item I'm running into an issue with is the notorious edge card connector. Needless to say, I'm not really inclined to spend $80+ and then have 9 spare connectors around just to get the one I need I've thought about trying to engineer a substitute out of individual pins with a redesigned band module board sitting horizontally instead of vertically (hope I'm making sense here!) Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Will it be able to monitor K3 output
Dave: One of the suggestions (mine) for 'additional features' was to allow the P3 to function as a transmitted waveform monitor (a la SM-220/SM-230, and others). I'm hoping that the blank hole on the back of the P3 case (labeled 'SENSOR') will eventually bring to us that feature. Not sure we'll be able to monitor OUR transmitted bandwidth, but it'd sure be very handy to be able to monitor our transmitted waveform. Having had a monitor scope for 40+ years (starting with a Heathkit HO-10), I cannot imagine operating my station WITHOUT a monitor scope in-line... they've saved my bacon several times in years past... I wouldn't be without one. 73, Tom Hammond N0SS K3/P3 Field Tester. [Elecraft] LPPan vs. P3 .. my experience
I have been using LP_Pan and PowerSDR/IF software for over a year and am very happy with the system I love the big screen and the rig control features (It provides much of the Flex radio functionability), the 'point and shoot' frequency control, etc. I am a 'techie' retired engineer and have occassionally found it necessary to solve various hookup and adjustment problems that were frustrating. Putting together your own system with an LP-Pan, high quality sound card, cables, and software (with attendent setup and adjustment requirements) is not for the novice. The result is very nice indeed but a P3 would be so much easier and hassle-free. The probability of additional features coming along for the P3 could very well result in some very attractive advantages for the P3 that I am not yet aware of. I think this is a very important consideration. Although other features of either system get a lot of attention I believe the basic panadapter display is 99% of what is useful. I have become so spoiled by the ability to see a large band segment with a clear display of all signals that I feel lost when without it. Both the P3 and LP-Pan provide this basic need and do it very well. My 2 cents worth. Re: [Elecraft] LPPan vs. P3
The first two reviews below are by folks who also have used LP-PANs. Any comparison to LP-PAN is meaningless unless you specify which software you're using with it (i.e. PowerSDR, Rocky, Skimmer, etc.) http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/9146 BTW don't make your decision based solely on the display size...that's what the External Display cutout in the rear panel is probably for. ;-) I'm personally still undecided because I love Skimmer's waterfall for contesting (its Blind Mode is OK for unassisted). However its does have some limitations that the P3 solves nicely. I'll probably use both (which is possible since you can feed the P3's IF OUT to Skimmer with a 3 dB splitter loss) until I see how the P3 evolves. One big limitation of Skimmer is that it only has a 24 kHz Span (in IF on Softrock mode which is what I use for the K3) versus the 200 kHz Span in the P3 (and which may eventually be increased). 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/LPPan-vs-P3-tp5378053p5378238.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Panadapter experience...
My experience with panadapters extends into the distant, dusty, past, with Heathkit and earlier analog versions. They are indeed useful, but the coverage needed clearly depends upon the type of operation one does... HF SSB ops probably want a much wider frequency coverage than CW ops. I can't imagine wanting/needing anything like 200 kHz coverage when operating 20 meter CW, especially when trying to unravel a pile-up. Digital modes (other than CW) probably want even less...PSK and RTTY ops confine their operations to relatively narrow band segments. Lately my own operation has often been with PSK31/63 or one of the other FLDIGI-supported digital modes. Typically I use either the panoramic views provided by FLDIGI, or SpectraVue with my SignaLink-USB, and these are quite adequate with the 2 to 5 kHz coverage they provide. I have also used a PM-SDR with its antenna switching add-on and my high end sound card (192k), which gives a much wider view of the band. When 6 meters is open, as it has been much of this summer, wider coverage is needed. Typically USB operation is above 50.125 and CW operation is below 50.100, and it would be nice to be able to keep an eye spread across this whole part of the spectrum, since many operators taking advantage of these openings use both voice and CW modes. For similar reasons, wider coverage is desirable on VHF and UHF. To summarize, I believe that wide-band coverage is particularly useful on 10 meters and higher (for obvious reasons). It seems to me it adds little for HF use below 28 MHz, and probably is even a bit distracting or disadvantageous. Thus the key factor one is looking for is the ability to control the sampling rate/bandwidth, missing from programs such as FLDIGI. PM-SDR and WinRad does provide this control, but not in any very convenient way, and SpectraVue also has this capability, but the P3 seems to provide it as well. The secondary advantage (?) of the P3 is that it removes the computer from the set-up. If one is running an old computer (inadequate shielding, slow sampling rate in the sound card, etc) this may well be an important advantage. Don't forget there are several panadaptors out there like Perseus and they all have a price/performance ratio. David G3UNA Hi Folks, We have seen all these posts before when the P3 was first announced. Of great interest to a lot of us monitoring the reflector is real world comments from the new recipients of the P3 and any comparisons they may offer on the P3 vs after-market Pan Adapters. I personally have not ventured into the pan-adapter field as I don't want to use a PC for this purpose. I use my notebook for computer logging only when operating casual and in contests. I think I can see the advantages of using a pan-adapter but I would also want to monitor my TX/Tx audio in a waveform such as the SM-220, again, without the need to use a PC based system. The suggestion has been made to use the P3 with a plug-in keyboard to run PSK31 and RTTY, again, this interests me greatly and I see the benefits of such a system if and when it should become available. I read also where the P3 will have an extended bandwidth at a later date and in VK many 6M operators monitor 49.750 (Chinese TV) and 50.110 the international Dx calling frequency and so an increase in bandwidth would be a major carrot for those operators to aquire a P3. Add all the above to the advantages of running field operations (a common type of operation in VK) without a PC (some of us do paper logs for just Dx operations) and the P3 will suit a lot of potential customers. I base my assumption on the comments I have received from several K3 owners in VK4 that have expressed their interest in the P3 but have decided to wait awhile to see just what announcements Elecraft will make on any P3 improvements or added features. I also understand that Elecraft's focus at the moment will be on getting the current version of the P3 out in the field where they expect to hear back from the owners on any shortcomings they feel the P3 has. It is these individual customers that give feedback direct to Elecraft so that any improvements or added features can be placed on a list to be worked through as time permits. Originally I felt a P3 was not for me, however I must admit that in the last few days I have decided that I will most likely buy one when the picture is a little bit clearer on the P3's future expansion. Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Will it be able to monitor K3 output
I think it's more a question of when than whether, although I've heard no promises so far. The list of suggested extra functions for the P3 is longer than the current spec! I expect the P3 to be a continuing source of delight for many years as it evolves from a simple but very slick panadapter/waterfall display into a rich platform for station control and monitoring. The empty but tantalizingly labeled holes on the rear panel, the vast, empty spaces inside the box and the fertile imaginations of the Elecraft team and their users are all strong indicators of a bright future for the P3. Right now it's decidedly cool. I look forward to awesome. But don't wait! I clicked on 146.820 memory and every time I click I get 146.820 even if I'm clicking on 147.195. I click on 28.300 and radio shows 28.327.94 Help __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I do have a comment about the frequency resolution. When setting a memory both frequency fields display the entered frequency in one Hz resolution, but when the frequency is set at the rig it is in ten Hz resolution, resulting in a VFO tuning rate of ten Hz. I rarely use the ten Hz tuning rate and would like for the tuning rate to remain at the setting I have assigned it. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Memory Issue
Try a memory 09, and then look at the K3 Frequency Memory Help under the topic Quick Band switching using Memories 00-09. When you have the K3 config menu item CONFIG:MEM 0-9 set to BAND SEL, and select memory 0-9, the K3 QSYs to the last used frequency on the indicated band, not the frequency you have in the memory. Thanks Dick, K6KR. That was the issue. Changed the CONFIG:MEM to nor and everything started working great. Thanks again. It always seams to be something simple we overlook as the problem. Is the memory utility not going to track this option? Does view quick memories only refer to m1-m4? 73, Guy. On Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 9:37 PM, Jim Woodson ke4...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks Dick, K6KR. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Memory Issue
Memories 0-9 are one kind of quick memory and memories M1-M4 are another kind of quick memory. In the K3 Owner's Manual, revision D-7, quick memories 00-09 are described on page 16 and also the per-band quick memories M1-M4 are described. All of these are supported by the K3 Frequency Memory Editor. However, when you have chosen K3 menu option CONFIG:MEM 0-9 is set to BAND SEL, then they act as band switches, and QSY to the last-used frequency on the band in the memory, rather than the actual frequency in the memory. View Quick Memories does select whether or not the per-band quick memories are shown or not. These memories can store only frequencies on that specific band. For example, 160 M4 cannot store a frequency on the 30 meter band. Memories 00-99 are always shown, without regard to the setting of the CONFIG:MEM 00-9 setting.
