[Elecraft] Multiple KPA-500's with Combiner
The combiner idea is an interesting concept for the KPA-500. Combiners are very common in solid-state broadcast transmitters and one of the major advantages is redundantcy. If you had 3 KPA-500's run thru a combiner and running 1,500 watts output... even if one died then you'd still have 1,000 watts output. For serious contesting work, the combiner sounds like a terrific idea. 3 KPA-500's x $2,000 = $6,000 which is close to what a single 1,500 watt solid-state amp is likely to cost and with the multiple KPA-500's you'd have the big advantage in that you're still on-the-air with almost full power even if one KPA-500 fails. 73, Dick- K9OM Joe, Why not stack 4 KPA500's and use a combiner!!! 73 Tony Fegan VE3QF On Fri-10-Sep-10 12:15 PM, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: Snip: The one vacant market niche - and one Elecraft appear to have avoided - is the US Legal Limit solid state segment. George, I think they look great and I've never liked wimpy light weight tuning knobs. My wife was asking for b-day ideas and that was what I gave her since she's much more comfortable buying bling than technology. I sent her the weblink and didn't hear anything about it for a few days. Then one afternoon she came down to the ham shack and was looking at my K3 and asked why that radio in the picture I sent her was only $180 and I had to pay a couple of grand for mine. So I told her the $180 was just for the knobs..She looked at me and said you must be crazy and walked out. I was really hoping to end up with a set of those that I could claim someone else bought. [Elecraft] Simultaneously listening to 2m and 6m
We seem to experience what appears as a software anomaly when trying to listen to 2m on the Main VFO and 6 m on the Sub. Our club station has a K3 with a sub-rx, a K144XV interal 2 m option and an extermal XV432. A 6 m antenna is connected to Ant2, and HF-antenna to Ant1. The 2m option works fine by itself, as well as HF/6m. When we set it up to listen to a 6 m beacon on the Sub-rx and switch bands through HF/6m/2m/70 cm on the Main rx, then sometimes all works fine. Other times the input signal seems to disconnect from the 6 m sub rx when we come to 2 meters on the main rx, all other combinations are fine (HF/6m/70 cm on the main). We try to use Bset and switch Ant1/Ant2 on the sub, but it does not help, neither does holding RX ant for antenna switching. It is a problem which is kind of hard to reproduce, but it appears often enough to be annoying. So far we cannot predict what combinations of settings that cause this. But I wonder if others have experienced anything similar? - Sverre, LA3ZA K2 #2198, K3 #3391 http://www.qslnet.de/member/la3za/K2/mod.html LA3ZA Unofficial Guide to K2 modifications -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Simultaneously-listening-to-2m-and-6m-tp5521449p5521449.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DX4Win
Ken, I use DX4WIN with my K3 and I notice the same issue. I do not use PSK31 very often and when I do I have the change the mode manually within DX4WIN. This is more than likely a DX4WIN issue with the rig control file for the K3. The software is probably not recognizing the Data A or Data D modes on the K3 and by default assigns RTTY. N1MM contest software provides a way to map the modes in the Configurator. I would think some modification of the rig control file for the K3 is needed in DX4WIN. I would refer this to the DX4WIN reflector. [Elecraft] OT SDR.com as 2nd RX for K3
I just added a P3 to my K3, there by freeing up the computer from it's panadapter tasks. I had been using SDR-IF through LP-Bridge and DXLab HRD Bridge, so I could sync HRD and DXLab with the K3's frequency, and see 96khz of the band around me on SDR-IF. Now that I am running the K3/P3 combination, I can run SDR-Radio.com as my 2nd receiver, I just add it to one of the virtual ports on the LP-Bridge, then I can click on anything within the Delta 44's 96khz, and listen to them with out loosing where the K3/P3 are set. Sorry if this is already old news for some of you, it's a new toy for me, using the SoftRock Lite, which I already had and was using for, my homebrew K3/Z1/Softrock Lite/ panadapter, until I can come up with the funds for the KRX3 sub receiver. at least the KRX3 will be $100 cheaper than the P3 was, yea, we won't talk about the filters I'll need... one garbage bag of aluminum 807 cans at a time, right? hi hi Off topic: I only use DXLab for my VE7CC DX Cluster connection, I have never been able to stay connected using HRD, nor been able to keep the spots when I was dropped and reconnected. -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

If RF is getting into the computer, the solution is a multi-turn choke on the audio cable between PC and the K3, and another on the serial cable. I think you said 80M was the primary band. That will take a lot of turns. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RFI in transmitted audio
Hi Felipe, microham is being fed from K3 12v port. This is not a good idea. Repeating W4TV's warning with a different choice of words The 12V at the K3 will vary up and down according to the audio current draw, at an audio rate. This variation in the 12V will now modulate anything else that uses it including audio circuits in the uHam gear. Depending on the characteristics this could cause the transmission from one rig to appear in the other. Even without uHam or other utility low level audio boxes, the same thing can happen with the two rigs if they share the same power supply. It would likely be a muddled sounding audio crosstalk, but based upon the degree of DC filtering in a rig or device, could be quite loud. Always run a separate small power supply to feed uHam devices and low level audio station utility gizmo's. Always use separate DC power supplies for SSB transceivers operated concurrently: one supply per transceiver. You can get away with mixed supply leads on CW, but NOT on SSB. 73, Guy. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3] Passband tuning quirk
Hi all, Operating in the WAE contest I am experiencing a quirk with the passband control knobs and displays that I haven't noticed before. My operating habit in SSB is to use the HiCut/LoCut mode, generally leaving the LoCut at 300Hz and use the HiCut as a QRM fighting tool. This works beautifully for me. If I am in doubt what my current passband is, I press either button twice to see what its setting is. Here is where the quirk comes in. I am currently working with a passband of 300-2300 Hz, at least that what the buttons report after the 2nd press. But after the first press the HI/WIDTH button reports a BW of 2050Hz which is off by 50Hz. My firmware version is 4.05 / 2.60. This, of course is no big deal, but I wish after more than two years of firmware upgrades we could get this perfected. There are still problems with the graphic representation of the passband so that can't be relied upon either. I could generally see strongest stations above a lot of noise on P3. That was good. But over past few days, it seems that the sensitivity of the device was diminishing .. started to have trouble seeing the few stations that I could actually hear above the noise on my K3 ... and then today, it now appears that the P3 is basically deaf to the K3 ... I see some low ampitude noise, which doesn't vary in appearance with or without the coax cable to the IF OUT of the K3 plugged in. I am listening to a fairly strong Italian CW station now on 20 meters now, sticking his head above the omnipresent S5-6 noise ... armchair copy, if you will, but all I see is noise at the bottom of the P3 screen. The center frequency tracks my K3 nicely ... but no matter how I adjust the REF, SCALE and SPAN, all I see is noise. Any thoughts would be welcome. [Elecraft] SSB and WSJT
I use my K3 as a driver using the transverter output to drive my 1296 Transverter for EME. I have a problem, I will try to explain in full. On WSJT I use a Navigator interface to the LINE IN to operate the K3 and the PTT is controlled by the Navigator on Com 4, and the K3 operates perfectly. MIC SEL is set to LINE IN, and MIC + LINE NOT APPL. Everything perfect, good signals. Set up as it is, I can ping the moon to check my echo, by pushing the XMIT button, with the K3 in USB and then see my echo on the computer software a couple of seconds later. The problem comes when I try to operate SSB on EME, (and CW). I have set VOX off, MIC SEL to FPL and Bias is on, (for the Heil headset), Pushing the XMIT button to start transmitting, then start talking, I can see the audio being transmitted, and the Bird Wattmeter on the amp output showing the voice output BUT then after a few seconds the amp goes to full output, just as if I had pushed the XMIT button in the desciption above.. Ideas please, The XMIT is also the TUNE button is it possible the K3 is going into TUNE mode, that could explain the amp going to full power. I need to sort this problem before I start on CW. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RFI in transmitted audio
This is not a good idea. Repeating W4TV's warning with a different choice of words Actually, using +13.8V *from the transceiver* is not a major issue since there is no current return via the microHAM interface (or any other accessory device). The big problem is with using the same supply as the transceiver and connecting at the power supply end of the transceiver power cable because a portion of the transceiver return current flows through the microHAM interface (or other accessory device). That return current modulates the V- line of the accessory and puts the voltage drop on the accessory V- line in series with the microphone audio! The variable voltage on the accessory V- is often in the 10 to 50 mV range - equivalent to the level of many microphones! The problem with the K3 +12V jack is the two series diodes and the power switch FET between the +13.8V input and the switched power output. The voltage drop is rather significant and can be quite variable under load Always use separate DC power supplies for SSB transceivers operated concurrently: one supply per transceiver. This is good advice ... and always bond the chassis of each piece of equipment to the common ground point and not chassis to chassis. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] P3 Misbehaving?
Is the noise floor on the P3 stuck at -140 dBm or so all the time, no matter what? I experienced a similar problem after 2 weeks of use, and replacement of the P3 RF board was required. Apparently, I was informed, another cause can be handling damage to transformers T100 or T101 on the P3 Front Panel board, so you might take a look at them. I sure wish the P3 schematic was available at the time, it would have made troubleshooting a little easier (it's still not published AFAICS). and then today, it now appears that the P3 is basically deaf to the K3 ... I see some low ampitude noise, which doesn't vary in appearance with or without the coax cable to the IF OUT of the K3 plugged in. OM, On a K3 with the IF OUT modification, you should definitely see the noise level on the P3 go down when you disconnect the coax that goes from the K3 IF OUT to the P3 IF IN. I don't have a K3 without the mod to test with, but I'm pretty sure that, even in that case, if you turn on the K3's preamp you should still see a change in noise level when you disconnect the coax. If not, there is something wrong. First check the coax cable to be sure it is properly seated at both the K3 and P3 end. If you have another BNC coax cable available you might try it to see if the problem is a bad cable. You could also pop the top off the P3 and check the small coax cable that goes from the rear-panel amplifier board to the Front Panel board. Push with a twisting motion on the connector on each end to be sure it is well-seated in the receptacle. (On the amplifier board, support the board with your fingers while you do this to avoid flexing the board.) If none of that helps I would contact Elecraft customer support and get their recommendations on the next step. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RFI in transmitted audio
Joe, Let me rephrase your point and add a bit more. Any accessories that are used during transmit would best be powered by a supply different than the transceiver power supply. Strange modulation of the V- line to the accessory can result, especially with SSB transmission, but possible with other modes as well. If the accessory is only used during receive, it can use the same supply as the transceiver because the current draw of the transceiver is constant during receive. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/11/2010 8:06 PM, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: This is not a good idea. 73, __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] P3 Misbehaving?
The noise floor shifts by 10 db each time I make a change to the PRE or ATT switch ... resulting in 3 separate noise floor levels. But you are right, the RF board turned out to be the problem! You will see on my next post, the final chapter. Thanks very much, Bob. -Original Message- From: Bob Cunnings [mailto:bob.cunni...@gmail.com] Sent: Saturday, September 11, 2010 8:10 PM To: Sanger, Joseph Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 Misbehaving? Is the noise floor on the P3 stuck at -140 dBm or so all the time, no matter what? I experienced a similar problem after 2 weeks of use, and replacement of the P3 RF board was required. Apparently, I was informed, another cause can be handling damage to transformers T100 or T101 on the P3 Front Panel board, so you might take a look at them. I sure wish the P3 schematic was available at the time, it would have made troubleshooting a little easier (it's still not published AFAICS). As usual, Elecraft support was prompt and efficient, I'd contact them if there's no change. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Misbehaving?
Well, I am happy / embarrassed to say, problem solved. Alan, your troubleshooting tips led me to the solution. I am closing the loop on this, in spite of my embarrassment, in order to possibly save someone else this problem. The problem was simply carelessness on my part. I had installed the RF board upside down ... guess what, it physically fits either right side up or upside down .. the only apparent difference visually, from the back at least, is that the little dual-position switch ... doesn't poke out of the back slot when you install board upside down. D'oh! Flipping it right-side up solved my problem. What is odd is that it ever _sort_ of worked in the upside/down position. Well, thanks to all who offered comments ... I REALLY appreciate it. -- Joe -- WB2SSB -Original Message- From: Alan Bloom [mailto:n...@cds1.net] Sent: Saturday, September 11, 2010 9:04 PM To: Sanger, Joseph Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] P3 Misbehaving? and then today, it now appears that the P3 is basically deaf to the K3 ... [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, A cool, wet week here. I just heard a frost advisory on the radio. Odd to think it is still summer and we may get frost. But there is some cheery news inside this cloud. There will be some sun and the temperatures will zoom into the high 60s again; there may even be a day or two above 70! I am waiting for them to remove the fire danger sign but there must be a traditional date for its removal. It has shown the lowest level for three weeks during our rains. I have not been on the radio at all this week other than some NTS stuff on 80 meters. Since everyone on the net is within a county or two there were no problems with copying them. MUF is well above what is necessary for good 80 meter propagation. Working with the NTS is good CW practice. Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening. 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help) Sunday 2200z (Sunday 3 PM PDT) 14050 kHz Monday z (Sunday 5 PM PDT) 7045 kHz Stay well, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Misbehaving?
Alan's advice is pertinent because I found my P3's BNC-to-BNC coax cable to be open... swapping it with a known good one laying in my cable drawer solved that problem. Just a warning for anybody else to go ahead and suspect the cable (as well as everything else) if you don't see what you expect to see on the P3. Al W6LX OM, First check the coax cable to be sure it is properly seated at both the K3 and P3 end. If you have another BNC coax cable available you might try it to see if the problem is a bad cable.
