[Elecraft] [K3]: APF or Dual PB? You can have both!

2010-12-29 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM

Like some others have reported, I often tapped the DUAL PB button instead of
holding it, thereby selecting the SSB filter instead of engaging the APF...

To avoid this, I chose to assign the APF to setup II of the HICUT/WIDTH
button, so an unintentional tap would only switch between HICUT and
WIDTH... which is not so annoying.

Then changing CONFIG:DUAL PB to NOR again, setup II kept the APF and now,
switching between I and II, I can choose between APF and DUAL PB without
going through the CONFIG procedure. I find this very convenient indeed.

[Elecraft] K2: 40 meter bandpass filter alignment: Best in RX or TX?

2010-12-29 Thread Andrew Moore
I'm doing a thorough realignment of my K2.

I've done a RX-only alignment of the 40 meter bandpass filters by listening
to a signal generator source while peaking L1 and L2. Could I gain accuracy
here by using a DMM to monitor the AC voltage at the speaker output, peaking
L1/L2 for max AC on the DMM? This is the method suggested (I believe in the
K2 manual) for more sensitivity/accuracy when peaking L34 in an earlier
stage of alignment.

In a later stage, I tune L1 and L2 when in Tune mode, for max power output
according to the K2's LCD.

Which is the most accurate method -- monitoring with DMM in RX mode, or
monitoring power output in TX mode? Or are they so close it just doesn't
matter?

Thanks,

I don't remember the exactly frequency, but I believe I have a reverse-tuned

the dial, it moves in frequency more than the dial is bumped.

It's not terribly strong, so I ignore it. It is likely the result of mixing
products within the K2, which doesn't surprise me if you find it to be
microphonic.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: 40 meter bandpass filter alignment: Best in RX or TX?

2010-12-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Andrew,

During the initial build, it is important to peak the bandpass filters
using receive to be certain they are aligned in the correct bands - this
is especially important on the higher bands.
After doing that, the bandpass filters are peaked using transmit where
the peak is more easily observed.

If your K2 is working and you are simply doing a re-alignment, you may
skip the receive alignment and just do the TX alignment.

For observing the L34 peak, I use Spectrogram (or whatever FFT
application you will be using for the IF filter.BFO alignment). Use a
filter about 700 Hz wide, and tune the 7000 kHz birdie for the greatest
amplitude on the screen (at your chosen sidetone pitch) - the peak is
quite broad, but look on the right of the Spectrogram display (the
higher frequency content) and adjust around this broad peak point to get
the higher frequency noise to its minimum. That will give you the best
signal to noise ratio - which is the correct setting for L34. A DMM on
the K2 output cannot show you all that, but if you have no other tools,
it is one way to set L34.

That being said, it is best to align L34 after doing the IF filter
alignment so you can use the properly aligned filter during that step.
While you are building the K2 and doing the preliminary alignments as
you build, things are a little bit different than when building - you
will do a better job if you do the final alignment with the completed
K2, and the L34 alignment as I described is one example.

Re: [Elecraft] Reason to NOT buy a K3?

2010-12-29 Thread Julius Fazekas n2wn

Hi Gary,

You've already had a lot of great replies...

Thought I'd throw my two cents worth in at this late date:

The second RX is well worth having particularly for the low bands where
you're more likely to be using a separate RX antenna. Too, if you're gonna
be DX, it's VERY useful for listening to behavior on your TX frequency, as
well as the pile up. Diversity RX is very useful at times, but if you don't
have the antenna(s), it is kinda expensive to have just to say you have
one...

I'd probably second the 500hz and 200hz options, not a big cost savings, but
it could be put towards the second receiver... One can argue the performance
difference between 5 pole and 8 pole, I've not seen a meaningful difference
in my contesting activities.

For digital (RTTY), I'd suggest going with FSK and the aforementioned
filters would be just fine.

The K3 is as competitive as you are... I think it is very functional,
provides easy and competitive performance at a good price AND has a
tremendous team behind it. Firmware is always being improved or having
features added, which is more than you can say for some other companies. IF,
you ever need to work on/repair one, it is fairly easy to do and parts
aren't unobtainium.

One can argue about a radio's competitive advantage forever, there are so
many things that go into winning beyond the radio. That being said, either
the K3 or K2 are great contest radios IMHO. The K3 offers a lot of
flexibility and growth options. Combined with KYBITC, decent antennas,
decent QTH and decent propagation, you definitely will in great shape for
the top 10 ;o)

Cheers and see ya in the fray!

73 and Happy New Year to all,

Julius

[Elecraft] K3/K144XV queries...

2010-12-29 Thread John Ragle
1. Even when NOT on 2 meters (K144XV off) my K3/100 seems to run hotter
than prior to installation, e.g. the fans run more frequently. Is this
general experience? ...and is it simply due to the changes in airflow
due to the presence of the K144XV structure?

2. My K144XV puts out the quoted 10 watts. This seems to be its
saturation value, as increasing the drive from 1 mW to 1.5 mW does
nothing to increase the output. This is within specs, however, 10 watts
is not quite enough to drive my TE 1452G amp to full output (I get about
200 measured watts out at this drive level).

An obvious solution is to put another (!) amp between the K3 and the TE
as a post-preamp so to speak. This seems downright draconian. Dave
Anderson has suggested tweaking up the TE unit. Is there another way?
...as in slight mods to the K144XV?

There is another similar freebie program called SpectraVue which is

[Elecraft] [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?)

2010-12-29 Thread GM0ELP

Seasons Greetings,
Just finished building my Xmas present (XV144). Initial trials show an
offset frequency of +12.5KHz is required to put it on frequency.
Unfortunately the K3 XV1 OFS menu only goes up to +9.99KHz leaving the
frequency readout 2.51KHz low.

I have re-read the manual, but there doesn't seem to be any other method for
the additional required offset?

Is it normal for the XV144 to require such a large offset?

My frequency references are not exact (IC275E, GB3ANG Beacon and several
local amateurs). I don't need any high degree of accuracy but ball-park +/-
300Hz would be nice.

Any help would be welcome.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?)

2010-12-29 Thread Matt Zilmer
Hi Doug,

The K144XV here had an +850 Hz offset when received. There is about
25Hz of temperature drift as well. Combined, the 875 Hz could be
canceled using the offset setting.

12.5 KHz seems excessive, and that's the highest I've heard of.

Note: My K144XV is one of the first ones produced (early 2010), and
has remained stable (as above) during the last year.

Hope this helps. Doesn't sound like it will.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 mod history?

2010-12-29 Thread Matt Zilmer
Keeping a DCM-style record of each K3 would be virtually impossible.
Factory-installed K3 options could be tracked by the original
buyer/owner/builder but not by serial number, since many owners have
multiple radios. More to the point, options are also
bought/sold/traded in and out of K3's. The best example of this is
filters, but it applies equally to major subassemblies like the KXV3/A
or K144XV, etc.

I had a brief discussion with Eric about this in October. When a K3
(or K2, etc.) arrives back at the shop, the service person inventories
its installed options. But there isn't much more than a rev check of
the option module(s) since many have multiple revs.

The number of fielded radios probably far exceeds the number Elecraft
staff see for service or new installs in the shop, and there's no way
to know what options each K3 has installed from afar. Unless Elecraft
has developed some unique form of TelePresence. :)

The P3 works best with the IF gain mod installed. You can find mods
at www.elecraft.com, click on K3 Mods + App Notes. It's the second
mod shown from the top of the table. The mod is a simple resistor
change that is easily performed in the field, and parts are available
gratis (plus postage, I think).

I've done all my own mods, and few are challenging for a moderately
skilled kit builder. Mods aren't for everyone however, and YMMV. A
few require patience and studying the problem before jumping in, but
they are carefully crafted for ease and accessibility, and documented
extensively (mit photos yet!), and fairly easy to perform.

Re: [Elecraft] Is there a way to connect K3 to CIV bus?

2010-12-29 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I think some of the microHAM units might do this. My MK2R+
  advertises this capability.

It depends on the purpose for connecting the K3 to CI-V bus. If
the user is trying to control an Icom compatible peripheral from
the K3, many of the microHAM interfaces (including DigiKeyer II,
microKEYER II, MK2R+ and Station Master) provide CI-V compatible
outputs. Information on those auxiliary or amplifier control
outputs (including configuration data) are available in the User
Manual.

Note the microHAM interface generates an Icom CI-V transceive
compatible data stream TO the accessory. There is no reverse
path and as such one can not connect an Icom transceiver to the
auxiliary CI-V jack and slave the K3 (or other supported
transceiver) to the Icom transceiver.

2010-12-29 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Jim,

Since you say you have hearing loss, that can prove difficult - I would
suggest a visual aid.

You might try using Spectrogram (or another FFT audio spectrum analyzer)
when attempting Method 2.
You should see the spike from the sidetone and the spike from the WWV
carrier on the display,
Once you get close to the correct point, you might be better able to
hear the wow-wow-wow - adjust the AF gain to bring the ampliude of both
signals nearly the same, and you should hear it.

Go for the hearing aids too - they will make life more pleasant and
enjoyable. I hear if you served in any branch of the US military for
more than 6 months, you can get them free through the VA - worth
checking out. I will be investigating that when I need new ones.

Bill,
To FULLY integrate the P3 with a K2 will require extensive changes to
he P3 firmware. If less than full integration is satisfactory, you can
o that today. You need to add an IF output connector and a buffer
mplifier to the K2. Then in the P3, go into the Xcvr Sel menu
election and choose the 4915 kHz IF. It works fine, but the P3 doesn't
ead out the K2 frequency on the display and features like tap-to-QSY
re not available.
Adding K2 support to the P3 firmware is on my list of future features to
dd. I have a K2 and have purchased the buffer amplifier kit from
lifton Labs http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/k2_interface.htm , but
ave not installed it yet. I'm anxious to get to it as soon as I have
ime.

Do you have an RTTY program that has a crossed-ellipse display
(affectionately called crossed bananas by RTTY nuts)? If so, that
might get you closer than 20 Hz by using your sight instead of your
hearing.

A steady Mark tone should appear as a single oval that is perfectly
vertical or perfectly horizontal. You tune your rig by the amount of
the mark tone that you have set -- if you can set the mark tone to
some nice tone, like 2000 Hz instead of 2125 Hz, you won't have to
do much mental gymnastics to figure out the proper VFO offset.

Not all software have a narrow cross ellipse display, so you may need
to find one that is satisfactory. Basically, with the standard RTTY
shift, the cross-ellipse will go through 90 degrees of rotation with
170 Hz worth of offset.

If you can find software which you can change the FSK shift, you can
get even more accurate readouts. For example, setting the shift
(i.e., the difference between the Mark and Space tone) to 50 Hz will
move the peak of the oval by 90 degrees with just a 50 Hz VFO offset.

I just tried WWV in cocoaModem's wideband RTTY display (whose oval
is narrower than for other RTTY modes in cocoaModem). By using an FSK
Shift of 10 Hz, I can easily eyeball a 1 Hz change.

If your RTTY software does not allow such a narrow shift, it might
have MSK (Minimal Shift Keyed) mode, where the shift is 22.5 Hz.
(Note: MSK, not MFSK; they are different animals.)

If you are using WWV, be sure to use a narrow filter so the
modulations don't come through, or wait for the sidetones and
subcarriers to stop. Else you will get an oval that shakes around :-).

Alternately, you can look for iPhone apps for tuning musical
instruments. Set your VFO offset for middle C or something :-).

you could well be right.

With regard to the power issue, I should have asked Santa for the

the TE 1452G is slightly peaked at the FM end of the band, though what

Re-tweaking the TE looks to be the best solution to the drive problem.

Again, thanks for your response. Best transition to 2011...

Re: [Elecraft] TCXO - 0.5PPM

2010-12-29 Thread ab2tc

Hello again,

While I don't disagree with other people's suggestions that visual aids
would be of assistance I am still a little bit at a loss (no pun intended)
why your hearing loss should be a serious obstacle to detecting the zero
beat on the side tone. Do you have any problem hearing your chosen side tone
at all? In CW mode turn the AF volume down to 0 and press Spot to hear the
side tone. If you can't hear the side tone, you need to adjust its frequency
and/or amplitude until you can hear it clearly (hold Pitch to adjust
frequency, hold Mon to adjust volume). Now is the time to turn the AF gain
back up until you can hear stuff roughly equally as loud as the side tone.
The flutter or warble in the side tone generally can't be heard easily
unless you are within 20Hz or so of the desired frequency, so maybe that's
your problem. I can send you a recording of what WWV sounds like with say a
10, 3 and nominally 0 error if you think it might help. Tried this just now
and the fast flutter at 20Hz frequency error is clearly audible.

Re: [Elecraft] spectrogram

2010-12-29 Thread Joe Planisky
Another alternative for folks running Mac OS X or Linux is Baudline, available
at

http://baudline.com

It is free of charge, though not open source. Do note that it has a somewhat
unusual user interface (at least when compared to the typical Windows or Mac
application), so some time spent reading the manual may be necessary. It's an
incredibly powerful signal analysis program.

Re: [Elecraft] spectrogram

John:

There are several(!) versions of Spectrogram available.

IF you are planning on using Spectrogram to align your K2 or K1, then
I'd suggest getting Spectrogram v5.1.7 from my web site... it's
located immediately adjacent to the printed documentation for
aligning your radio (K2 or K1), depending upon which rig-specific
page you've gone to.

You CAN use newer versions of Spectrogram with my alignment docs, but
there's absolutely NO benefit in doing so and newer versions offer
features you will not need nor wish to use.

Visit:

For the K2 - http://www.n0ss.net/index_k2.html

Spectrogram and docs are located about 3/4 of the way down the page

For the K1 - http://www.n0ss.net/index_k1.html

Spectrogram and docs are located about 2/3 of the way down the page

The ONLY additional device you'll need is an audio jumper cable from
the radio;s
speaker output to the input of the sound card on your PC. Suggest
using stereo
connectors, but with TIP and SLEEVE (no RING) connected.

DO NOT OVERDRIVE THE AUDIO INPUT TO THE SOUND CARD.. this will cause audio
artifacts in the display which are not helpful during the alignment process.

If you have ANY PROBLEMS OR QUESTIONS, drop me an e-mail.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?)

2010-12-29 Thread GM0ELP

Hi Eric/Matt,
I am using the XV144 not the internal K144XV. For reference source I am
using a beacon and several other local sources (not mine) so definately not
my finger problems. Other than the 12.5KHz offset problem all seems well (as
far as I can tell) : alignment, comms with K3, ptt, sensitivity, tx audio,
power output etc, etc. I have spent the afternoon re-checking component
values but haven't found any mistakes yet. I must have made a mistake
somewhere if this has never been seen before.

Is there a way, or an adapter, available to connect the K3

choice would be a K3 serial port to USB adapter. Are there
any special considerations

use a computer sound card program to measure the frequency of the audio

Re: [Elecraft] Soldering temperature

2010-12-29 Thread G. Beat

David -

An additional point to Don's answer,

You should ALWAYS match the MASS (1/32 - 1/4 typical in increments of 1/64)
and

PROFILE (screwdriver, single flat, conical, flat conical, etc.) of the
Soldering Handpiece Tip to the work being performed.

This is true for irons, desoldering/suction handpieces, as well as tweezers.

TEMPERATURE is the third variable in the Soldering Triad.

The most common mistake I have seen, is that novice and beginners will turn
up the heat

on the adjustable temperature soldering stations.   That is often the worst
step they could take -- damaging the underlying board.

and component.

Greg

===
 David,

 Assuming a 2 lead component --
I would use 750 to 800 deg F to remove the component - heat each end
alternately until it moves and then flick it away from its solder pads.

When installing the new component, 650 to 700 deg F should be adequate,
but that depends on the solder - if you are using lead-free solder, you
will have to increase those temperatures.  The soldering of any one
connection should be complete in 2 to 3 seconds, if it takes longer than
that, the soldering temperature is too low, but if it takes less than 2
seconds for the solder to flow, the iron is too hot.

Check the frequency stamped on the crystal, mine was the wrong frequency
and gave the exact same problem, I requested a new one and it was also
the wrong frequency. In the end I obtained a high stability crystal

was aware of this but at the time it was very frustrating.

[Elecraft] K3: KAT3 Antenna Tuner Question

2010-12-29 Thread RLVZ
Hi Guys,

I have a couple of questions about the KAT3 antenna tuner I'd appreciate
your help with:

1) Where can I find detailed instructions for using the KAT3? Such as,
step by step instructions on how to use the manual tuning option.

2) I'm tuning an Inverted L antenna and the initial SWR is higher than
maximum SWR LED level as all lights are lit. (so I have no idea what the
actual SWR is) Is there a way to get an actual SWR or Reflected Power reading
via the KAT3? Yes, I know I should be using an Antenna Analyzer but mine
is in for repair.

Didk, you must have something terribly wrong to get this indication, like
connected to the wrong connector or an open coax.  I don't remember ever
encountering a situation where my KAT-3 could not find a match.  I have never
tried a manual tune in the three years that I have owned the K3.  Try
connecting

Re: [Elecraft] K144XV (was [K3] XV144 fault (offset problem?))

2010-12-29 Thread Amateur Radio Operator N5GE

David,

Mine drifts a bit when I first go to the band, but to solve that I just give it
a key down into a dummy load for about ten seconds to warm it up, because When
your not on the 2m band it is not powered. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but
I think that is what the manual says. That seems to settle it down quite a bit.
However, I do wish it was a bit more stable. Perhaps they are working on a
solution that will keep the xtals warmed up when you are on another band. That
would be nice.

[Elecraft] K3: KAT3 Antenna Tuner Question- Update

2010-12-29 Thread RLVZ
Hi Willis,

Thanks for the reply. I always leave something out! The KAT3 tuner will
tune the Sloper fine. But when the tuner is out-of-line the Sloper SWR
pins the SWR meter (lights all of the bars) and therefore I can't tell
whether
the antenna is too long or too short becuz wherever I qsy on the band the
SWR still pins the meter. I was hoping there was a way to get an actual SWR
reading from the K3/KAT3, such as: 5 to1. That way, I could check the SWR on
the CW and SSB portions of the band and know whether the antenna needs to
be shortened or lengthened. It appears that the K3/KAT3 will readout
inductance or capacitance but not the actual SWR nor will it readout the
Reflected
Power. Since the SWR is over 3.5 to 1 the SWR bar graph is of no value for
tuning the antenna. Guess I'll have to wait until my Antenna Analyzer is
repaired.

Thanks 73,

Dick- K9OM
