Re: [Elecraft] [K2] TX Issue in Part III checks

2011-01-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Brian,

The DC voltages on Q24 are based on a properly working K2 at the 5 watt
power level.
What you now have is a K2 that will not develop power to the RF
Detector, so the power control circuits will react to force the RF
voltages to their maximum - the control element for that is the VALC
voltage to Q24, and that will go to its maximum since there is zero
power detected.

I note that you measure zero volts at the drain of Q24, but VALC at the
source (CB emitter of Q8) is at 7.4 volts. Something is broken (not
soldered) between those two points because the only component between
the two is R98 which should not be drawing any current and therefore
should not have any voltage drop (given your situation with no power
output).

Look for unsoldered connections (don't forget the connectors) or solder
bridges in that signal path.
Look critically at you soldering - if the solder did not flow out to an
almost invisible edge on the solder pad, it is suspect, and the likely
cause is that the solder pad did not receive enough heat. Re-flow the
solder on all suspect connections using a hot (750 deg F) iron, and add
a bit of flux if necessary.

You can use the K3 Utility Program to save the configuration and then
restore it later if you need to. Or are you wanting a hard copy of the
configuration info?

Is it a way to dump to a file the current k3 configuration ? I think to
all
settings, for example to activate digimodes with my Signalink
interface I
touched mode, line level input and so on. My goal should be to have a
reliable restore point to rollback in cause of my errors during future
setting modification temptatives. Many thanks to everybody, HNY 2011 and

[Elecraft] [K2] TX Issue in Part III checks

2011-01-08 Thread Brian Handy
Hi All,

I've been working on my K2 and I'm on the home stretch. I had to dabble a bit
to find a cold solder joint in the Part II checks, but eventually got a
home-brewed test oscillator to reach through on 40m! Quite happy with things
so
far, and learning a lot.

I still have a lot to learn about the transmitter side though, that doesn't
work. When I first hit 'tune' in the Part III checks, I noticed high current
on
the power supply, high current on the front panel, and changing the power level
didn't help, it was always high draw.

It didn't take much of this to zorch the PA finals and short things straight to
ground. Nothing worked until I pulled T3, and while I had the soldering out I
took out the PAs and started looking around and reading the mail archives.

I noted one suggestion from Don to someone else and checked the voltages on
base
on the finals - both are around 0.65V, which I think is OK.

I realize things won't be quite the same without the PAs there and proper
feedback happening, but ... I then started going through all the voltages on
the
RF board with TUNE on. Everything looked pretty much fine except for Q24 ~

Leg - Expected - Measured:
G- 0V - 5.6V
S - 1.2 - 2.5V
D - 13V - 0V

That doesn't look right at all to me. Exploring further, I started chasing
VALC
down the rabbit hole.

Pin 2 of U8 (V PWR) seems to vary between 3.8-5V as I turn the PWR knob in
TUNE. I decided that was OK.

Pin 1 of U10A doesn't move around a lot, only up and down about 0.1V. Finally
the emitter of Q8 (V ALC) seems stuck at 7.4V.

I was firmly confused at this point, so went back and started checking Control
Board voltages per the page of expected readings in the back of the manual with
CAL FCTR turned on. Everything seems turned off when I do that and I'm seeing
pretty much 0V everywhere.

I'm a bit saturated at the moment, but thought I would ask if this sounds like
I'm on the right track, or if I have to get to poking elsewhere ...

Cheers and thanks in advance,

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2011-01-08 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
More snow is falling as I sit by the fire. Not too cold with very
little wind so it is pretty nice outside. I am right at snow line so it
has come and gone over the last week. Never quite goes away and never
really builds up either. Kind of a steady state system. We did get some
icing a few days ago but that was followed by some warm rain. The roads
are in fair condition but one needs to be careful on the shaded corners
where it can be slippery. Considering some of the drop offs we have up
here it could get rather exciting if you slip off the road. Luckily there
are plenty of large trees to slow the descent :)

Propagation has been alright this week so I expect the nets tomorrow to
gather a fair number of folks.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] Xmit frequency differs from display on one band

2011-01-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Chip,

First, calibrate the BFO by listening to an AM station. If you have the
KXB3080 installed, use 10 MHz WWV (but any AM station will do - make LSB
and USB sound the same - the instructions are in the manual.

After that, use the DDS menu (again as instructed in the manual), adjust
the menu so the station is received at the proper frequency on the dial.

You must do both the BFO and the DDS calibration to make the frequency
display correct.

Using the DDS menu, I have calibrated the KX1 so that the transmitted
carrier frequency is displayed accurately on the 20 meter band. However, on
the 40 meter band the carrier is 350 Hz higher than shown on the display.

Am I overlooking something or is the disparity something I just need to live
with?

Are you getting enough audio into the K3? Set the K3 to TX TEST and

look at the ALC bargraph. You should have 4 bars lighting solid with

the 5th bar possibly blinking.

If you are not seeing that indication on the ALC meter in the K3, you

are not driving the Line-in with enough audio.

The K3 "ALC" meter is also a "VU" meter on the lower part of the scale.

Indication below 5 bars indicate no ALC is being generated - ALC action

begins with the 5th bar. So if you followed the old advice that you

should not have any ALC indication for DATA modes, that old advice must

be modified for the K3.

The K3 Line-in expects to see line level signals. If you are using an

external interface, some by default use microphone level for the output

and you must change a jumper in the box to bring it up to line level.

option called RF ATTN which by default inserts 20 dB attenuation into
the audio output. For use with the K3, I would think that should be set
to No Attenuation.

Jim,

Check to see if audio is coming out of your computer,

And set up K3 in data mode.
Not sure what program you use, I'm using,
However I have not been on psk for a while.

Re: [Elecraft] Data modes issue

2011-01-08 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Jim,

Good news - I replaced the thermal pad between heat spreader and case
with good old Thermalcote heatsink goo, and it made a huge
difference. Case heats up right away and things cool off fast after
TX. Did a lot of checking before lunch, all good. Then I went for a break.

Bad news - U6 failed when I powered up again for final checkout
before taking it off bench and hooking to rig. Zero output. Quick
check showed nothing getting past SGA7489. It just died. Am wondering
if this device was on its way out while I was testing, might explain
power drops. I've ordered replacements from Digi-Key.

Thanks for the input from several of you off list.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Hears stations twice

2011-01-08 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
If your radio is doing it, you will hear that on ALL loud radio
signals. This would be especially true of the carrier on AM broadcast
stations. If only on one signal, it's their problem.

There are a LOT of transmitters that have transmitted frequencies well
down besides the main transmission. A common one, heard on analog
transmitters that are using a keyed audio tone through SSB circuitry
to reduce manufacturing cost, is carrier balance in the balanced
modulator, and ultimate filter rejection of the other sideband. These
could be anywhere between 700 and 4000 Hz away depending on the
circuit and settings.

Your K3 does not do this (transmit artifacts of analog SSB generation)
because it is digital and does not have a balanced modulator. 15 kHz
SSB is generated by the transmit DAC directly from a number stream
created by a firmware algorithm from the audio number stream created
by running microphone audio through an analog to digital chip. The
slightly unbalanced carrier and the opposite sideband that allow the
analog artifacts simply do not exist anywhere.

For a while the K3 TX had a clean and coherent microphonic spur on CW
when using the MON tone and the internal speaker on CW. This has been
remedied for some time now (see "stiffener" mod).

[Elecraft] XMIT Key does not work

2011-01-08 Thread Lee Buller

My XMIT key on my K3 stopped working Anyone have that? CW still works.
NOT is test mode either. DISP key stopped working too. I was checking other
buttons and all seem to work and then the DISP and XMIT button started working.

HMM.

This is weird. Anyone have any ideas?

  Congressional Reform Act of 2011

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3
months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people
demanded it. That was in 1971...before computers, before e-mail, before
cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to
become the law of the land...all because of public pressure.

I'm asking each addressee to forward this email to a minimum of twenty
people on their address list; in turn ask each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will have the
message. This is one idea that really should be passed around.

Congressional Reform Act of 2011

1. Term Limits.

12 years only, one of the possible options below..

  A. Two Six-year Senate terms
  B. Six Two-year House terms
  C. One Six-year Senate term and three Two-Year House terms

2. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay
when they are out of office.

3. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security
system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social
Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.

4. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans
do.

5. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay
will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

6. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the
same health care system as the American people.

7. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American
people.

8. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective
1/1/11.

The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen.
Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers
envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s),
then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take
three days for most people (in the U.S.. ) to receive the message.
Maybe it is time.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS! If you agree with the above, pass it on.
If not, just delete

You are one of my 20+. Please keep it going.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Err 12v

2011-01-08 Thread Hardy Landskov
I recently had Q6 on the LPA board fail shorted, in which case you will get
no power out at all.
It's a MOSFET and very prone to an ESD event since it is on the antenna.
Check gate-to-source resistance with an ohm meter. Should be 800 or so ohms.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Hears stations twice

2011-01-08 Thread Steve Ellington
Correction:
The PA station was running a Kenwood TS-570. His spur was down frequency
about 400Hz. I have also head spurs from SGC 2020's and TenTec Paragons both
caused by low PS voltage.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Hears stations twice

2011-01-08 Thread Steve Ellington
I've heard the same thing but with many other receivers. It usually turns
out that the transmitting station has a problem though. Low power supply
voltage is a common cause of transmitted spurs. I know one guy in PA (state)
who has a TS-450 with a spur down about 200Hz, weak but strong enough to be
heard 600 miles away. I've told him about it several times but he says he
has no idea what to do about it and continues to broadcast "CW Stereo".

Hi,

During the Christmas holidays I spent a lot of time on 80m and I came across
the problem mentioned on the reflector some time ago.Sometimes I can hear a
strong station twice.Yesterday, for example I heard a strong German station
on 3514 and a few khz down I heard the same signal again, but much weaker.I
did not use the NB or NR. This happened a few times already. Is this a known
issue and will it be fixed in the next firmware release?
