Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 vs THP
Gary, Jumping on the bandwagon? THP has been driving that bandwagon for about 4 years with the previous model - the HL-1.1KFX. The new one, the HL-550FX simply adds 6m to the previous model. I would wager that THP is not aware of the developments at Elecraft. In fact, the HL550FX was envisioned/planned long before Elecraft first announced the KPA-500. 73, Bob W5OV -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Gary Gregory Sent: Monday, January 24, 2011 3:52 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] KPA-500 vs THP Hi All, Has anyone noticed Tokyo High Price have announced what seems to be a direct competitor to the KPA-500? Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 Question
I'm trying to figure out how it could be configured to control antenna selection based on mode of operation. My station has Yagi beams for UHF/VHF weak signal work, and also verticals for FM and repeater use. I know I can get the KCR2 set up to select the appropriate relay readout for a given band, but I can't see a way to automate the process of selecting between the two available antenna on (for example) 2 meters. As you have probably heard by now, the KRC2 does not directly decode 2 meters (I don't believe it decodes above 30 MHz except as XVTR bands - but that may be 54 MHz) and certainly does not decode within any band. As far as I know, the only band decoder currently available that will decode within a band is the microHAM Station Master. As long as the CAT interface provides the correct RF frequency (e.g., IF +/- LO), Station Master can be configured to decode band based on that frequency. For example, this would allow one to define 144.0-144.5 and 144.5-148 MHz bands and select the yagis for 144.0-144.5 and a vertical elsewhere. Another use is selecting loading coils on an 80/75 meter antenna ... one might configure four or five separate bands depending on bandwidth and number of tap settings. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] KPA3 Fails Calibration
Confirmed the problem, the K3 is working just fine now, the issue appears to be my power supply. For some reason it cuts off when the K3 power level gets near on the 6 meter band. Sorry to sound the alert, had just installed the KPA3 unit and did not occur to me to suspect the power supply as the unit ran calibration on the other bands very well. When it faulted the one time on 75 meter I began to suspect RF getting into the power supply protection circuits. Ran on the battery last night, into a dummy load, solid 100 + watts on every band, with no problem. It's all good! Cordially, Bruce J. I'm charging up a battery now for the real test, will know tomorrow. Rig worked just fine, ran the New England AM QRP this afternoon on 3.880 MHz - 3:00PM EST, just fine. Re: [Elecraft] APF ringing
Bob, I'm not sure how you are using the APF but I'll make a few general comments from my experience with it. The APF is intended for occasional use only on weak signals that aren't much above the noise level. And when used, it requires careful fine tuning so that the signal is precisely centered in the K3 rx passband. The over powering and ringing is by design, to make it effective in popping those tuned-in weak signals out of the noise. The APF was never intended to be left engaged while tuning the band. 73, Barry N1EU Bob Lanning wrote: Is there away for the user to adjust the APF? Oticon hearing aids (made in Denmark) offer an accessory that transforms Bluetooth RX into the format used for wirelessly linking the right and left hearing aid. With that adapter, you can hear a cellular phone (via BT) in both ears instead of one. You can attach an auxiliary adapter to a stereo output (TV, stereo RX, K3) and hear it in the hearing aids. At some point, I'm going to get these adapters and dispense with my headset (hi). Rob K6RB (currently using my Oticons and really enjoying them). Re: [Elecraft] Re: KPA-500 vs THP
The PW-1 antenna tuner is only 3:1 wide so it is not a full function antenna tuner. Indeed, I use that in concert with a Palstar AT1KM antenna tuner for my horizontal delta loop (all bands). I don't include the AT1KM when I am operating with the Hexbeam antenna as that is 1.5:1 or better on all bands. From what I heard about the future Elecraft tuner, it should be wider then the PW-1 minuscule 3:1. phil, K7PEH On Jan 24, 2011, at 7:11 PM, Johnny Siu wrote: Hello Phil, Yes, good exercise. Re: [Elecraft] Blue Tooth
Sorry for the OT bandwidth but this subject keeps coming up. Two years ago I bought a Jabra bluetooth adapter and headset (with boom mic) to use with my K3. I used the equipment that was featured in a QST article on the subject a couple years ago. It sort of worked but was a big hassle to set up .. and it was necessary to go through a setup procedure every time I used it. The main problem, though, is that bluetooth technology has been developed for use with telephones and computers. I spent more than a hundred dollars on my adapter and headset and found it to be very cheaply made. Even worse .. the adapter has a battery saving feature that automatically shuts it down after a minute or so when it does not detect any audio which makes it almost unusable for typical ham radio use. I gave up in disgust. Maybe some bluetooth equipment is better now .. I don't know .. but I'm not going to give it another try. I sure would like some sort of RF link for my headset with boom mic. If anyone has a good idea along those lines I would like to hear it. I have looked for commercially made equipment but all I can find is headphone-only RF links and handheld mic RF links .. all fairly expensive and not adaptable to a headset with boom mic. But you'll get a lot for your $4/watt: - virtually instant band change via RF sensing (or remote control, or per-band front panel switches) - one of the most efficient broadband solid state amplifiers available, including in terms of RF output watts per AC line input watts - extremely quiet operation (fans will be off most of the time during normal operation, but are capable of tremendous cooling power when you need it) - silent, diode-switched QSK CW beyond 80WPM -- a great match for the K3's QRQ mode - no tendency to fault off line when overstressed; the amp will drop a couple of dB when faced with potentially dangerous operating conditions, but will keep going. If the fault clears, it will automatically go back to full power (the amp will of course protect itself from damage from critical faults). - comprehensive monitoring of all input and output conditions Last but not least, it'll look *great* sitting next to your K3 and P3 :) 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 vs THP
I think Elecraft under-sells the system notion of their products. Certainly, the K3, P3, KPA500, and KAT500 will work fine as stand-alone products, but where I suspect they all will really shine is as a modular, but tightly integrated, system. The K3 product line looks like it will soon allow for a smooth, user selectable, upgrade path from a competitively priced entry model K3/10 to a seriously tricked out station with all the bells and whistles when all the parts are from the K3 system. The expedition friendliness of all the components is an added bonus. To me, as a systems engineer myself, I consider this a competitive advantage. It both needs to be advertised more, and maintained as a focus of future development. 73, Byron N6NUL On Mon, Jan 24, 2011 at 8:46 PM, Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com wrote: Phil Hystad wrote: But you'll get a lot for your $4/watt: Last but not least, it'll look *great* sitting next to your K3 and P3 :) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 vs THP
This will be an unbeatable combination. Nothing else on the market will do so much for such a reasonable price with an option to do some of the assembly - or not. Elecraft has challenged the big three to the point of forcing changes in their marketing strategies and product lines. Even TenTec had to do something. With year after year of more of the same from the same old, same old, Elecraft has shaken everything up with outstanding performance, feature richness and moderate and reasonable prices. And for certain Wayne and Eric's skills have not peaked. There are still many more years for growth and innovation. I still think the K4 is possible. Perhaps years from now, but possible. And, hopefully, a K1.5 - a 2 to 4 band K1-sized sideband, cw and digital modes transceiver with 10 watts out (OK, I can live with 5). 73, Doug -- K0DXV On 1/24/2011 10:20 PM, Byron Servies wrote: I think Elecraft under-sells the system notion of their products. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 vs THP
Agreed, I'm a relatively new HAM and really like the integrated approach to the modular components of the Elecraft system. Currently have a moderately configured K3 P3... saving up for the new amp and tuner. Really like being able to add high quality component, as needed, to my k3 system that make the old timers drool with envy. :) Solus Veritas, Darin Sent from mobile phone. [Elecraft] K-3: Unswitched Rx Ant
Hi Guys, Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the K-3 Receive Antenna is unswitched during tranmit... which allows high RF to get back into the receiver. That's sure the case when using my beverage for receive and transmitting on 160-meters. (sounds like my K-3 is going to blow up) I'm wondering why this is the case. Couldn't an inexpensive relay be added to the KXV3 to prevent his problem? I'd appreciate knowing what others are doing to prevent your K-3's from blowing up while using beverages on 160-meters! Is everyone building an external relay box just to switch the beverage off during transmit? Thanks 73, Dick- K9OM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K-3: Unswitched Rx Ant
Dick, The RX ANT IN jack is electrically isolated from the rest of the circuitry during transmit via a pair of PIN diodes. If the signal level is high, an associated COR (carrier-operated relay) is also kicked in. So what you're experiencing is not normal. However, we do advise keeping RX-only antennas as far from high-power transmit antennas as possible so that the COR will not activate during transmit. This minimizes risk of damage to the PIN diodes. If you continue to have such an issue, please contact k3support for other suggestions and possible troubleshooting information. 73, Wayne N6KR On Jan 24, 2011, at 10:18 PM, r...@aol.com wrote: Hi Guys, Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the K-3 Receive Antenna is unswitched during tranmit... which allows high RF to get back into the receiver. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 vs THP
Hello Jack et al Thanks for your input. Just would like to compare it with my SPE amp. I can hook it up with 2 Radios (SO2R) situation, the SPE has a dedicated connector for so2r, The down side for me with the the SPE is the relays, they are extremely noisy, clack clack in QSK. secondly it's just come back from Rome, Italy, for a Mod to the relays for QSK. I blew up the relays last year during IOTA contest. So I'm looking at the kpa500 as a possible replacement as I only use it on half power (400w legal in UK) So I was interested in what the intended full spec was as I've been seriously looking at Icom amps as I have used them on CW contests in Cyprus with C4i contest station. So yes, I know what I'm looking for but will compromise!! The inbuilt ATU on the SPE (3 - 1) amp is good, but I don't hardly ever use it as all my antenna's are SteppIR.
