2011-08-12 Thread EMD
Don,

Thanks for the information. I will follow your advice. I know the wire
antenna is not the best but for the time being it's all I can come up with.
I also think I will go ahead and install the KAT2 since it is complete and
ready for installation and would solve some of my impedance issues.

[Elecraft] KXPA100 timeline?

2011-08-12 Thread John Shadle
I see that "KX3 Ordering and Shipping dates will be Fall-Winter 2011"
according to Elecraft's web site
(http://www.elecraft.com/KX3/kx3.htm). Will the KXPA100 be available
at that time as well? If so, have any more details been released about
it (kit like the K2 or semi-kit like the K3; price range; cost of the
KXAT100 autotuner)?

Also, are any details available on how it will integrate with the K2?
It would be cool if it would integrate similar to the KPA100 in that
you can have continuous selection of output power from 0-100W. Just a
thought... :-)

Thanks!

2011-08-12 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
85/17 or 43/9 is a good multiband antenna for use with a KAT2. I have
found my KAT2 capable of matching loads that I couldn't match with my
stand-alone QRO tuners. I have a K2/10 with battery and KAT2 for all
kinds of portable uses including my RV. I have a separate
KPA100/KAT100 in an EC2 that I dock it with for home use.

2011-08-12 Thread Gary Gregory
John,

Good questionthe photos of the KXPA100 appear to be just promos, not
actual boxes and my fear would be they will follow 'later' which would be a
bummerfurther, no pic of the remote tuner to piggyback the 100w PA. Both
are required for my intended use for the rig strictly as a mobile
installation.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Some Questions

2011-08-12 Thread John W2XS
A balun in line with the antenna can also attenuate signals on the AM BCB. I
have found that feeding the antenna (in my case a CF 135-ft zepp) directly
into the KXV3 (bypassing the Balun Designs "Tuner" balun) adds an additional
25 dB increase in signal strength at the low end of the AM BCB. This
complicates the switching arrangement a bit, but a ceramic DPDT knife switch
came to the rescue.

John W2XS

AM Broadcast - yes, that explains what I noticed, seems to really
> attenuate anything below 1200 Kc

It's about 20-25 dB by the time you get to 500 kHz. This helps protect
the K3's PIN-diode T/R switch from extremely strong low-frequency
signals.

If you want to bypass the high-pass filter, you can install a KXV3
module and connect your AM broadcast RX antenna to RX IN.

[Elecraft] K3 Modularity

2011-08-12 Thread Dave Hachadorian
I just installed a 100W PA and second receiver in a friend's K3.
Everything went exactly according to plan.

During this project, I was really impressed with the forethought
in the K3 design, which allows incorporation of these major
modular elements at any time.

Re: [Elecraft] [Moon-net] Elecraft K3 Presets/Settings for JT65B / EME

2011-08-12 Thread Lance Collister, W7GJ
Hi Iain,

Well, as I recall, the DATA A passband was narrower than the SSB mode - at
least in
my K3. I have only 1.8, 6.0 and the standard 2.7 kHz filters installed in mine.
 When
I am calling CQ on JT65 mode on EME, I like to have the widest possible flat
passband
so I can copy callers who spread out to call me without interfering with each
other.
I can't confirm the exact details right now though, since my K3 is all packed
up
for the 5W 6m EME DXpedition.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Presets/Settings for JT65B / EME

2011-08-12 Thread cqbilld
I continue to be puzzled by this thread. Given that WSJT (all modes) is
WRITTEN for use on USB by Joe Taylor, WHY would we be interested in utilizing
any K3 mode but USB?

I have operated 441 and JT65 utilizing my K3 off the Moon, tropo and MS with
no desire to fuss with any other K3 "mode". The K3 works great on USB ... end
of story.

Here, USB, no equalization, 2.7Khz filter (5 pole), no compression. M Audio
Delta 44 Soundcard, XP dual core machine and no "audio" interface and a
homebrew Opto-isolator for PTT

 In the log::

34 - QSOs JT44
   702 - QSOs JT65
35 - QSOs JT6M
  1057 - QSOs 441

Many hours of HF WSPR as well.

Not all with the K3 ... but many!!

  What am I missing???

"DATA A" *is* USB with no equalisation, etc - that's the point. It
allows you to easily switch between SSB and data modes without having
to adjust audio processing for each.

I just looked at my passband, with spectran, in DATA A and USB modes
with the bandwidth cranked up to 4.0kHz (in both cases) with a 2.7kHz
filter. Indeed, the passband seems to be cut off at about 200Hz on the
low end in DATA A mode, but not in SSB mode. What's that about?

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Presets/Settings for JT65B / EME

2011-08-12 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

What you are "missing" is that many operators *do* use compression and
TX EQ for SSB work.
DATA A is the same as SSB, but TX EQ is automatically turned off and the
compression setting is set to zero.
Other than those two items, DATA A is just like SSB - Oh, it will also
remember that the audio input is on LINE IN (and remember the level)
while one of the mic jacks is active for SSB mode.

If you never use voice SSB, your setup is just fine, but if you ever
plug in a microphone to use SSB for voice work, you will likely end up
setting up DATA A so you don't have to change menu entries and mess with
the level settings when switching from voice to JT65

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K3 Presets/Settings for JT65B / EME

2011-08-12 Thread cqbilld
There we are ... IF we wish to run flat and no compression ... DATA A it
seems is a natural. I think Lance 7GJ said he ran WITH equalization yesterday,
so he would use SSB. Seems like a users preference.

Here, it is very quick to hit pre-programed PF1 allowing a switch to rear
panel audio and IF I have used compression I will roll it back and I'm off and
running. (I have been known to keep the compression in on occasion)

I never use any equalization at all here, so that is not an issue in my
operation ... The K3 runs CW or digital 95% of the time EXCEPT for 6m Es. IF I
had to mess with equalization resets, it would become a bit like a dog chasing
it's tail at some point. Then I would be looking at DATA mode I bet.

I sensed a bit of aggravation in the responses in that past, that some of us
"insist" on using SSB when the Data "modes" were built into the software to
simplify our lives. I know when I wrote software and someone avoided one of my
programed features, I was "miffed" too.

After 56yrs of the best hobby in the world, I still like to twist a knob from
time to time.

Long live amateur radio and long live the "old school ops" for putting up
with us that enjoy playing in "their ball park" using digital modes.

As to the question of "integration" with the K2, that is doubtful based on
other recent comments by Wayne in answer to similar questions:

So, don't expect the tight integration that you can have with the K2/KPA100
combo. The K2 communicates with the KPA100 via the AuxBus. This will not
happen with the KXPA100. The KXPA is designed to be a more general-purpose
amp, and so will not have the specialty hooks to "mind-meld" with the K2.

I -do- find Wayne's comment about using the KXPA100 with the K2 as being
"difficult" to be a bit odd. There are external amp keying mods available
for the K2, and ALC generally is not needed if levels are set properly. The
preliminary data sheet for the KX3/KXPA100 states:

"Our high-performance KXPA100 home/mobile amplifier seamlessly integrates
with the KX3 as well as other popular 5- to 10-W transceivers."

Is the K2 not a popular 5- to 10-W transceiver? ;-) Of course it is. Perhaps
by his statement about use with the K2 as being "difficult" more refers to
the keying issue than anything else. Or perhaps worry about brief overshoot
beyond requested power on key-down? I don't know.

I would have thought that the KXPA100 would have an RF sense keying and
band-switching arrangement that would make an amp keying line from the K2
(and other rigs) optional, not mandatory.

That should not be a problem since applying modulation (audio tones)
that low will result in "tilt" on transmission in any case. In my
experimentation with JT65 on HF working below 300 Hz or so resulted
in power output varying with the specific tone even in DATA A with
no TX EQ presumably due to the skirts of the roofing filter on TX.

2011-08-12 Thread Bruce Beford
My crystal ball is somewhat foggy, and has a large crack...
However, my guess has been that orders will be taken sometime between
Thanksgiving and Christmas, with shipments beginning after New Years.

Just my guess. I have no "insider info". I expect that even if I did, there
is still too much that needs to be done between now and order taking. Eric,
Wayne and crew like to be sure there are no potential hidden surprises (of
course short of supply chain issues, etc that cannot reasonably be foretold.
There is also the issue of the design staff being divided amongst several
projects right now (Think KAT500, and others I am sure we don't know about).

Now where did I put that polishing compound?

Yeah, I wouldn't suggest transmitting that low in the AF range, but
one might be able to decode a received signal down there (then perhaps
QSY down 1kHz and call him, if interested).

In any case, I find the discrepancy between the passbands of DATA A vs
USB modes curious - can anyone (Lyle?) explain it?

No news at present. We're still hoping to meet our announced schedule
for first shipments (December). If that changes we'll let you know.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3

2011-08-12 Thread Bruce Beford
Well, you don't -need- to join the Yahoo group. Wayne and Eric both read
several lists related to their products, including a few different ones on
Yahoo. So, along with designing and bringing cool products to market they
are both pretty busy.

You -could- ask your questions here. I've been following the info streams
since the KX3 was announced. I have no problem answering questions (even if
they have been asked several times) If I am not sure of something, or if I
am giving my own opinion, I'll tell you that too. I am sure others will be
glad to jump in as well.

Again, I am not an Elecraft employee, I just follow the discussion. I can
pass along what has been said by those in the know. I have always said that
if I give incorrect info, Wayne or Eric will correct me. So far, they
haven't needed to.

Bruce, N1RX

[Elecraft] Huntsville

2011-08-12 Thread Tommy Alderman
In order to determine which checkbook, the skinny one or the fat one, I
would like to know if any KPA500 kits are going to the Huntsville Ham Fest?

I'm looking forward to the presentation to be given about the KPA500 design.

Thanks and 73,

They just are too heavy for us to ship out en masse to the show.

[Elecraft] KPA500 pounded--fan question

2011-08-12 Thread eric norris
Dear Gang:

I have been pounding my KPA500 on 6m WSJT meteor scatter and love it (this is
30 sec rx, 30 sec TX full power for hours).  Here is my question for you RF
engineers.

I have been testing the fan settings.  Here is what I get for the peak PA temp
at different settings.

NOR = 65, 3 = 65, 4 = 61, 5 = 55, 6 = 52 degrees peak PA temp.  These are all
stablized numbers.  One of the most charming attributes of the KPA500 is its
SILENCE.  I hardly ever hear it when I use it on CW at NOR fan setting.

So, will I prolong the life of my PA transistors with a higher fan setting in
this application?  If the PA sensor is reading 65 degrees, the actual device
temperature has got to be higher.  Is the higher fan speed and increased noise
worth it?  Or should I leave it on NOR.

Thanks,

Eric WD6DBM

[Elecraft] A Finger PTT switch for use with my Yamaha CM-500 headset?

2011-08-12 Thread Jeff Hall
I've found that using VOX outdoors is problematic due to background noise, so
I'd like to wire up a finger PTT switch that works with my K3 and Yamaha CM-500
headset.  I have an existing finger PTT switch that was designed for use with a
Yaesu FT-11R HT.   There are 3 stereo plugs wired to the finger PTT switch
apparatus:

 - MIC IN (3.5mm male stereo plug)
 - MIC OUT (2.5mm male stereo plug)
 - EAR IN (3.5mm stereo plug) (this normally plugs directly into the HT's EAR
OUT jack)

When this is all hooked up to the HT, pressing the finger switch puts the radio
into transmit mode, just as if you pressed the TX button on the HT directly.

I'm wondering if I can use this switch, along with some adapters to get things
working with my K3 and Yamaha CM-500's boom mic:

1. Couple the CM-500's MIC OUT plug to the switch's MIC IN plug using a 3.5mm
female to 3.5mm female stereo adapter coupler
2. Connect the switch's MIC OUT to the K3's rear MIC IN (or my Microkeyer II's
ext. MIC IN) using a 2.5mm female to 3.5mm male adapter
3. Plug the Yamaha CM-500's EAR IN plug into the K3's phone jack

I don't have anything to plug into the K3's PTT IN jack and I'm not sure this
is even needed.  Maybe all I need to do is continue to use the K3 in VOX mode,
but now the MIC will only activate when I close the switch AND talk into the
microphone?

Thought I'd ask before running out and buying those adapters...

[Elecraft] KPA500 Question re the K3s per band power control

2011-08-12 Thread D Joyce
Group: I'm checking out a recently completed KPA500 (#234) running FW V1.11
with a K3/10 running FW Ver 4.36. The K3/100 with which it will eventually be
used is otherwise tied up and I wanted to confirm the the per-band power
control feature when used with the K3. (I'm using the AUX interface cable.)

It doesn't seem to work as described in the KPA500 Owner's Manual Rev B - see
page 9 Item 4 under Transmitting. If I put the Amp in Standby and set the K3
for 5 W as a low power level and then turn the Amp to Operate and run the K3 up
to a drive level of about 8 W to produce about 100 Watts from the KPA500, then
when I turn the Amp back to Standby the power level is 8 W not 5W.

Perhaps the per-band power control is dependent on using a K3/100 not a K3/10.

Anyone else seeing the same thing?
