Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY Audio Thru External DSP
GM Jim and Merry Christmas Yes I'm using a pair of TimeWave units between the K3 line output and the microKeyer II primarily for dual channel RTTY operation. Both of these units provide an adjustable dual channel passband which can be centered on the standard tone pair frequencies. Specifically the Main Rx audio goes from the Tip on the K3 Line output to the Line input on a DSP-599ZX and then from the DSP-599ZX Line output to the audio cable labeled line out on the K3R cable going to the microKeyer II. I'm also running a cable from the DSP-599ZX speaker output to a small 2 mini speaker to be able to separately monitor the main channel audio. Then for the subRx audio, I take the signal from the Ring on the K3 Line output to the Audio Input on the DSP-59+ and from from the DSP-59+ Line Output to the Tip on the audio connector on the microKeyer II labeled Sub Rx. I had the TimeWave units and decided to hook them up this way to provide independent control of the two audio channels for dual RTTY operation. I'm using MMTTY within DX4Win for the main channel and I open a separate instance of MMTTY for the subreceiver audio. This setup works very well for RTTY DX'ng and has resulted in being able to spot stations very quickly and work the DX. 73, Doug VE3MV - Original Message - From: Jim Harris jim.w...@yahoo.com To: Elecraft Email elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Saturday, December 24, 2011 5:08 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY Audio Thru External DSP Hi to the group and Merry Christmas Has anyone used an external DSP (noise reduction) between the output of the K3 and a computer sound card? What was your experience with it? Before telling me the K3 provides all the noise reduction needed, remember the NR is turned off in digital modes. I'm contemplating using a JPS NIR-12, Noise/Interference Reduction Unit. If anyone has any experience with this setup how did you hook it up? Which output from the K3 did you use; headphone, speaker or lineout? Which output from the DSP; headphone, speaker or lineout? Did you use or find necessary to use an isolation transformer between the K3 and the DSP and the computer sound card? My primary concern is to prevent ground loops. The NIR-12 schematic appears not to have any isolation on the outputs as does the K3 on the lineout. I would appreciate any meaningful comments. Skipper, I believe that can be caused by a bad connection in the antenna system changing the load on the amp. That would explain the factory not seeing that behavior. I believe you are using a K3. Does it do that when connected to a dummy load (use a different cable/adapter than you use to connect to your antenna)? Be sure the KAT3 tuner is bypassed (if you have it). Does this only happen when the rig is keyed, or does it also happen when you adjust pwr when K3 is in RX mode. If it ONLY happens when you adjust AND rig is TX, be sure you aren't suffering from RF in the shack. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY Audio Thru External DSP
Doug, Sounds like a great set up. If someone happens to be on a Mac a very effective and simple way to accomplish much of the same thing is to run cocoaModem which will display two receivers on the main screen with two waterfalls in Wideband RTTY. Very useful for watching the pile up on the Sub and the DX on the Main. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY Audio Thru External DSP
Doug, Thank you very much for the input. Even though your DSP is a different brand from mine, the hookup information is valuable. Sometime this week I will try to find time to get it hooked up and maybe I can find some RTTY on the bands for testing. I'm sure I will need to go to the local electronics store for cables and connectors to get it all connected together. A good excuse for warming up the soldering iron. Just for funs and grins I also have a Heathkit Active Audio Filter, model HD-1418, hooked up to my K2 which is the second radio in my RTTY contesting SO2R setup. With our postage stamp size lot of 80 X 90 feet in a residential area I don't have the luxury of big antennas so I tend to have low signal levels and high noise. I'm really hoping these additions are going to help bump the RTTY score up a bit. For those that have seen Don, W3FPR's response to my previous message. We have corresponded off line and I think we are on the same wavelength. Both of us are waiting to see how this idea will work out. Thanks guys for the input. Take pride in the USA. 73 Jim, W0EM --- On Sun, 12/25/11, D Joyce d_jo...@sympatico.ca wrote: From: D Joyce d_jo...@sympatico.ca Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY Audio Thru External DSP To: Jim Harris jim.w...@yahoo.com, Elecraft Email elecraft@mailman.qth.net Date: Sunday, December 25, 2011, 1:57 PM GM Jim and Merry Christmas Yes I'm using a pair of TimeWave units between the K3 line output and the microKeyer II primarily for dual channel RTTY operation. Unfortunately, yes, Thomas. Laptops are not very immune from RF, especially things like touchpads. OF course, in Susan's case, if it happens in receive, there is no RF being generated unless there is another source of RF nearby. Susan, is your radar on or off? Any other emitters nearby? I've had problems on large ships with erratic electronics when they were docked close to a powerful broadcast antennas. Is there somewhere away from your boat you can fire up the K3 and see if it still misbehaves? Since it happens in receive, does it continue when you disconnect your antenna and everything else except dc power? Re: [Elecraft] control knobs lously
Make sure you're running your rig at 13.8 volts. If you are using a 12 volt supply, and their are some connector issues, you could be having voltage issues. This also would be a reason why the trouble would not appear at Elecraft. Hit DISP and see what your running voltage is. Also make sure you do not have noise/spikes on the supply voltage. The only thing that the Width control and PWR control have in common is the multiplexed data bus and the plug/connector off the front panel, and the supply voltage. The two encoders on the two different knobs are not likely to have identical tracking mechanical problems. So you could have pins on the front panel connectors that need deoxit. An encoder event gets multiplexed on the information bus going to the CPU. If the voltage was very low to or from the encoder, then the zero/one states would not be clearly defined and misinterpretation could occur. Re: [Elecraft] P3 capture bug?
Alan, Yes it happens every time I try to capture an image from the P3! What settings are you looking for? I attached an image of it from my PC. 73's Michael n2zdb In a message dated 12/24/2011 5:27:45 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, n...@sonic.net writes: No, I haven't heard of that bug before. Is it repeatable? What settings cause it to happen? Which version of P3 firmware? Alan N1AL On Sat, 2011-12-24 at 15:53 -0500, n2...@aol.com wrote: Alan, I just loaded the P3 Utility on my Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. When doing a capture using the utility the capture is shown split in two with the reference numbers in the middle! The bottom portion of the capture/ screen is also corrupted. Is this part of the same bug or a different one? Also any idea when this will be fixed? Will the capture ever be available at a larger resolution (like in HD)? Thank you and Happy Holidays!, 73's Michael n2zdb In a message dated 12/24/2011 1:51:46 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, n...@sonic.net writes: Sam, I confirmed the bug, thanks. I'll add it to the bug list. Meanwhile, the work-around is to un-freeze the display as soon as the image is uploaded. 73, Alan N1AL On Sat, 2011-12-24 at 09:08 -0600, Sam Morgan wrote: P3 @ 38,400 on a real serial port, Win 7 Pro, P3 Utility v1.3.8.25 If I do a screen Freeze using an FNx button I have set for Freeze Then do a [Capture Image] while P3 in the tracking mode, after the image capture is complete if I click on File and then Save as or if I simply wait about 10 seconds the P3's screen blanks everything is there except no wave form is viewable at the same time the tracking mode switches to Fixed-tune mode I can just tap the MKR A button and the waveform comes back on but the really annoying thing is I'm still stuck in Fixed-tune mode I have a FNx set to switch back to tracking mode but that is just one more thing to do to get back to where I can take another capture I'm using this with Peak and then taping the Fnx for Freeze off and on until I can grab/freeze the yellow instant wave form I want in the capture, along with the cumulative Peak readings in blue, before I hit the [Capture Image] button if I have peak running and then hit [Capture Image] I know it freezes the screen, *and it doesn't cause the Fixed/Tracking mode shift) but if it wasn't the (instantaneous waveform) shot I wanted I also have to wait 35 seconds before I can try again to capture what I wanted hope all that makes sense to you. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

But no reason it could not be used for receive providing you place a good LF preamp ahead of the mixer (minicircuits SBL-1). In my case I am using my station 10-MHz reference oscillator as LO and running the K3 in test-mode at 10.470-10.510 MHz with output at 470-510 KHz. I LP fllter is needed on the output of the mixer circuit.
