Re: [Elecraft] K2 Audio Level using filters

2012-04-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Earl,

It does sound like you have a problem with the filter switching diode
matrix on the KSB2 board. If your signal level is decreased from the
level obtained when the KSB2 is bypassed ( jumper between pins 1 and 3
of both J9 and J10). then you have a problem with the KSB2 board. Make
certainly all the diodes are correctly oriented, and re-flow the
soldering in the OP1 filter end of the board.

If you are relying on the BFO frequency settings listed in the KSB2
manual, be advised that there "is a better way" -- go to my webpage
www.w3fpr.com article on K2 Dial Calibration and go to "page 3" which
deals with the filter settings. Use Spectrogram to give you a visual
indication of the filter placement. Note that recent K2s will have wide
filter widths that are much wider than indicated i\on the K2 display --
use Spectrogram to indicate the actual filter width.

Spectrogram version 5.17 and Spectrogram version 16 may be downloaded
from my website, Both have been seving my needs for a long time and
should be free of problems (there have been reports of bad downloads of
version 16).

Jim.

Thru-hole only. If you are reasonaly efficient, it will take you from 4
to 6 hours to finish the assembly.

Greetings all-

My order went in 65 minutes after the window opened. From the numbers, that
puts me
at about 130 units in (plus-minus 50). I just can't help checking every few
hours...
just in case! I have a FT-817 , so I snagged a packer amp to use on both.
We shall see how the KX-3 works with it. Stay patient my friends!

That makes sense. I am using a MK II and MMTTY so I guess it doesn't
matter. I will have to remember to make sure they are set to 45 baud if

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Data mode RTTY

It doesn't matter unless you are sending RTTY with the paddles (or
software that uses the "KY" commands). If you are using a normal
FSK or AFSK interface from the computer the data rate is determined
by the computer UART or sound card.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-Data mode RTTY

2012-04-16 Thread iain macdonnell - N6ML
Yes. When you use a computer to generate FSK, the timing is generated
at the the computer - it just tells the K3 when to shift frequency...
unless the software sends commands containing the text to be sent. The
K3 Utility can do that (IIRC), but most common RTTY software doesn't.

[Elecraft] [XV222] Ease of assembly?

2012-04-16 Thread Jim Lowman
I suppose this question pertains to any of the XV-series transverters.

I understand that there are no SMT parts to install; only through-hole
components.

How long should the assembly/alignment/testing take?
I've been assembling kits since the Heathkit days.

This looks like an excellent way to get on 222 MHz, although I'm a bit
on the fence.
I would need to buy the transverter interface module for the K3, so
we're looking
at almost $500 without an antenna for this band.
As I understand it, there is little activity on SSB on 222 MHz except in
contests,
which is surprising given the population of the greater LA/OC area.
At the SCCC meeting in September, our Division Director and Vice
Director said
that it wasn't this way 10 years ago.

Any help with my original question will be greatly appreciated.
I know that you can't help with the scarcity of stations on the band in
this area. :-)

[Elecraft] K2 Audio Level using filters

2012-04-16 Thread Earl Richardet
Hello to the Reflector,

I've recently completed building my Elecraft K2 transceiver and I have one
problem that I would like to resolve. Up to the point where I installed the
SSB kit into the radio, the audio level on each of the filter selections was
strong and working fine. After I installed the SSB kit, the audio level on
the CQ filters dropped off significantly. The OP1 SSB filters are working
great and have strong audio output, but as soon as I select FL3 or FL4 the
audio drops way off. Otherwise the SSB board is working fine and I great
audio reports from other stations on my transmit audio.

At this point I have confirmed all the components on the SSB, no bridges or
splatter that I can see. Everything appears to be ok. Don't know where to
start troubleshooting this issue.

Appreciate any suggestions on troubleshooting or if anyone has experienced
this themselves and of course what you did to resolve.

Thanks and Regards,

Earl VE7QJ

[Elecraft] [KPA500] No power out in "OPER" mode

2012-04-16 Thread K2GN
Today, I was on 15M CW in a pile-up calling, when I looked at the meters I
had no output.

AMP was in "OPER". Put AMP in "STBY" and I had output, but at the drive
level, naturally.

I did NOT see any faults or hear a beep. I check all Menu items and found
them right on the factory settings.

I read a few reflector messages via Nabble that described the same symptoms
but there wasn't any solutions offered or follow up fixes.

There was something about low voltage, so I checked my 2nd KPA500. Running
just fine. Switch power sources on the AMPs and the problem stayed with the
1st AMP.

I'm stumped but it doesn't take much to do that.

I'll call Elecraft tomorrow but in the meantime, any suggestions?

Larry/K2GN

[Elecraft] windowing P3 display...

2012-04-16 Thread John Ragle
For those of you who do not wish to devote an entire monitor to the P3
SVGA output, here are some final results of my testing:

1. Running WIN7 ultimate (32) on an older DELL dual core 3 GHz machine...
2. Running K3, P3, FLDIGI, FLRIG connected to this machine and working
satisfactorily...
3. Running AVerMedia Game Broadcaster HD (short PCIx slot) (aka
AVerMedia C127 PCIe Capture Device) on this machine...
4. SVGA output of P3 connected to (S)VGA input of AVerMedia card...
5. Running a 24" and a 21" monitor off an NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT display
card in this machine...

The P3 output displays properly and without noticeable delay IN A
RESIZEABLE WINDOW on either monitor, while FLDIGI and FLRIG run
peacefully on the two monitors. Other windows also display on these
monitors, and can be given focus if needed (e.g. email, DX Sherlock, etc.)

The frame grabber card sells for <$150 on Amazon.com and is probably
available cheaper if one shops around.

I will send a couple of screen shots off reflector to whomever wants to
view them.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX-3 Serial Numbers To Date ...

2012-04-16 Thread JP O'Connor
My order was about 90 minutes after the start. Based on posts from Elecraft
(here and/or on the Yahoo group), I suspect that by the time I ordered
there were already well over 200 orders - well over - and I do not expect
an email this week or even next. I certainly wouldn't complain if it
happened, however! It seems highly unlikely, though.

They are ramping up slowly to make sure things are right and said it would
take several weeks to deliver the orders placed just in the first few
hours. Hopefully the shipment volume will increase soon! Regardless, I
would rather have it "right" than "fast" truth be told.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Frequency

2012-04-16 Thread Alan Bloom
You may have to manually set the K3 to 38400 baud ("RS-232" in the
CONFIG menu). I found out that the P3's auto-baud routine was broken in
version 1.06 (and subsequent) firmware. It will be fixed in the next
update.

Re: [Elecraft] WTB - K2 or K3

2012-04-16 Thread Eddy
Hi Gerald, not for sale, but I'd go with the K3 if Transmit audio quality is
important to you.the K2 (mine included) has never been know for good
transmit audio. However, if CW is your thing the K2 kicks butt.

I've never owned or operated the k3, by-the-way, my opinions are from online
comments.

Actually, the first production unit was #20, which went to W3FPR. #24, to
KB9ABO (I think) was the first reported however. The latest we have heard from,
which only means it's the latest reported, is #42, which went to W6GQ.

Now how much of that did I get wrong I wonder? I haven't even looked at
anything to verify. LOL

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: kx1 higher current draw 80m receive

2012-04-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bob,

It is not a problem. Look at the KXB3080 instructions and you will find
that on 80 meters there is an added 18 ma. current draw - that is due to
the relay on the LPF board, it is not a latching type, and it must be
engaged when on 80 meters.

The KX1 is expected to draw more current on 80m. This is documented in
the manual...

[Elecraft] Fwd: kx1 higher current draw 80m receive

2012-04-16 Thread Bob Tomas
Hi,

I have had a KX1 for a couple of years now. I was running some tests after
a repair recently and noticed that
in receive mode, the radio draws about 0.060 amps on 80m, which is high,
but only draws ~0.040 amps on 40m,
30m and 20m, which is with the specified range.

Can anyone provide suggestions regarding whether this should be a concern
and if so, how to begin trouble
shooting?

Thanks.

[Elecraft] Elecraft KX-3 Serial Numbers To Date ...

2012-04-16 Thread Andy - GM0NWI
As of April 2012...

Anyone know where we "might" be with the "Elecraft KX-3 Transceiver" Serial
Numbers...

Re: Those folks who have been "Field Testers" & "Those That Have Their Radio
Shipped Already"..

"Maybe" A STUPID QUESTION ! ?

For THAT I "Unreservedly Apologise" for bringing this up, but being a future
KX-3 Buyer, I'm kinda interested.

"Just Wanted To Know" sorta, get a ball-park figure of the "very little"
that like everyone else, I KNOW that has been played-with or shipped thus
far..

"...The Reasoning Behind This..." I have 2 x K2's... One being a "Vintage
K2" in at least that the rig is STILL "stock" & NOT upgraded in ANY way
firmware wise..

Serial Number : 01432

My 2nd K2 I can't recall at the moment it's Serial Number - But I guess
maybe in the 3000's - 4000's - 5000's Serial (Lisa@Elecraft will know
tho)...

So I "Kinda" was playin' around with Serial Numbers in my head and was
thinkin, of tryin to order a KX-3 when the time comes with the SAME Serial
Numbers as my K2's ... Or something more "Special Agent Covert" - akin to
Serial Number 007 or something..

Anyways whatever happens in the near future I KNOW - I WILL BE "more than
pleased" with whatever I get from the folks there in Aptos..
TIA

[Elecraft] K3 Kit Complete

2012-04-16 Thread Bill Wiehe
Just completed the final checks on my K3 kit and I have to
say the putting this rig together was both an educational and very rewarding
experience. I highly recommend to anyone thinking about purchasing a K3
to consider getting the kit. The precision that goes into its manufacture
along with the very detailed assembly manuals makes it easy to complete. The
next kit in line for the ESD assembly mat is the P3 Kit and that will surely be
followed by the amp and
external tuner at some point. Thanks Elecraft for some exceptional products and
great support.

Re: [Elecraft] K2: audio thumps and pops on key closure - is K1 app note relevant?

2012-04-16 Thread VK7JB
Thanks Don. This is a relatively new K2/100 # 6998 and the KPA100UPKT mod
has been incorporated, as far as I understand.

I'll try the resistor & cap mod to the drains of the mute FETs on the K2
control board and see what happens.
