[Elecraft] K3 remote issues - launching HRD

2012-06-10 Thread Keith Heimbold
I have been experimenting with Remoterig and the K3 for awhile (since early
April) after purchasing a system from someone on this reflector. I bought two
of the RRC boxes and have had some challenges with getting it working correctly
for business travel purposes. It first started with networking issues that
change frequently especially since I am using a 3G USB card for remote control
connectivity. With that problem solved I now am facing issues with getting HRD
and/or TRX manager to launch.

I am wondering if there is an issue with the radio RRC box connecting to the K3
and then be able to launch a control program such as HRD from my laptop. I am
using 4.51 K3 software. I have gone through the settings many times and have
the proper configuration set up from what I can see. I am wondering if I am
missing something in configuring the K3 RS232 port or in the laptop. I have a
post on the Remoterig forum but thought I would also post here.

I am planning to get another K3/100 extremely soon and will be going to a twin
setup though I am a bit concerned that my 3G setup might have some issues and
the hotel I stay at for business has pretty miserable Internet connectivity.

Thanks,

Keith

It does not help. If I enter it once from the keyboard correctly and then
check back again, it will show the missing letter problem. Thus I can
set the memories OK (with k3util) but I cannot edit them properly.

Just type in the fields in K3Util what you want to send via cw.

Using a key or paddle to set is not necessary.

[Elecraft] k3util & editing CW memories (linux)

2012-06-10 Thread Jussi Eloranta
Hi,

I am having problems with the k3util program & programming CW memories
on linux. I have programmed Bank 1/M1 by keying with a paddle as:

CQ CQ CQ DE AA6KJ AA6KJ AA6KJ CQ CQ CQ DE AA6KJ AA6KJ AA6KJ K

Then I enter k3util and use Edit CW memories and I see Bank1/M1 as:

CQ CQ CQ DE AA6KJ AA6KJ AA6KJ CQ CQ CQ DE AA6KJ AA6KJ AA6K K

Note that J is missing from the last occurrence of my call sign. This
happens consistently every time.
If I save the memory at this point by clicking on save then I really
have a missing J in the K3 memory as well.

This is not specific to using M1 or the string length. I see the same
behavior with M2 with:

CQ CQ DX DX DE AA6KJ AA6KJ AA6KJ CQ CQ DX DX DE AA6KJ AA6K AA6KJ K

Now the J is missing from the second last occurrence of my call sign. If
I use a really short string, for example, just my call sign once, there
is no problem.

I though that this might be an rs232 transfer issue so I tried lowering
the transfer rate down to 9600 (from 38400)
but no change. I am using a usb based rs232 adapter and K3util version
1.12.3.28. Also, everything else seems to be working just fine (test
communications and other functions).

Any clues what is going on?

Thanks,

Jussi Eloranta (AA6KJ)

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Solar Panel Tests with K1 and A123 Battery

2012-06-10 Thread k3ndm
Eric,
Don't put a solar panel on a battery without a charge controller! I fried a few
batteries on a boat I had by going without a charge controller, and all I had
was a good 10 W panel.

I have been using 45-60 Watts of solar panels for the last few Field Days with
2 K2s, an FT-817, and a K1. The battery has been a size 24, ~85 Ah. On this
operation, we have had charge controllers, and our battery has been useful for
the entire time.

The company that I would have suggested for a charge controller is belly up,
but there are a number of sources for marine and RV controller that will work.
Additionally, you might try Harbor Freight. They are the folk we got the 45 W
worth of panels from.

Subject: [Elecraft] OT: Solar Panel Tests with K1 and A123 Battery

Dear Gang:

I'm a newbie to solar power, but I ran some tests today that I think might be
of interest to those thinking of solar operation in the field.

The story so far: I converted to Buddipole A123 packs for portable operation
more than a year ago and have been deliriously happy with them. However, to my
knowledge there were no solar charge controllers available for them when I
bought them, and so last year, when I first used a solar panel for Field Day, I
tried a using a small 5-watt, ancient glass panel I got at a flea market for
$10 and plugged it directly into a gel cell. Though it could not keep up with
the K2's power demands, it extended the discharge of the battery.

To the best of my knowledge, an undersized panel can be used directly with a
gel cell. I have read that you do not want to try this with an A123 pack, and I
was not going to risk it.

Buddipole now offers a solar charge controller for the A123 packs. However, it
is currently sold out. I went with a Genasun GV-5 Li 14.2v controller (NOTE:
these are offered at different cut-off voltages so make sure you order the
correct one-- Li 14.2v for A123 packs). The Genasun controller has the added
feature of dropping the battery out from the load when it reaches 12v so you
don't damage the expensive A123 pack. I much prefer fail-safe features like
this that prevent me from doing stoopid (sic) things.

Today I hooked up my K1 (as a pre-test for the K2) to a dummy load, and had it
calling CQ from its memory constantly. Using a 5w PowerFilm panel (these fold
up small and are great for QRP operations in the field), it would not keep up
with the K1's power drain at full tilt, about 7W out,as expected. I then hooked
up a 10w PowerFilm panel, and it did keep up with the power drain, essentially
keeping the 4s2P pack fully charged as indicated by the Genasun's LED. I
disconnected the panel, and drained the battery a bit, then hooked it up again
and it reached full charge as indicated by the LED, while still calling CQ. I
confirmed this after the test by hooking up the battery pack to a Cellpro 10s
charger which indicated the pack was at full charge.

I further crash tested the Genasun by disconnecting it from the battery, panel,
and load in random order to see if I could destroy it. I repeated this in every
different order I could think of, and still it soldiered on. Better it get
destroyed now than in the heat of the moment on Field Day.

The 5w panel showed about 300ma of charging current. The 10w panel showed about
600ma of charging current. Put in parallel, for 15w, they showed about 850ma of
current. Note: If you connect multiple panels in parallel you must use blocking
diodes. PowerFilm panels supposedly have these built-in.

The Genasun did its job, showing no current from the panel to the pack when the
pack was fully charged.

This was an "ideal" test, with the panels flat on the ground and near noon.
However, I won't be calling CQ continuously during Field Day, either, and so I
think this setup with 15W of panel power may be able to keep up with the K2 at
10 watts, given time talking to visitors, eating, and goofing off. Time will
tell! Ultimately, having a fully-charged battery near the end of the day means
night operations, too, but the need for enough excess panel capacity so that
the pack will charge during the day even with the radio drawing power. You'd
need more capacity for something other than casual operation.

If I had it to do over again, I would have bought a 20w panel for use with the
K2 (and eventually a KX3), though they are expensive. A 5w panel might be
adequate for a KX1 in the field, but cloud cover, tree cover, limited charging
time, and less-than-optimal angle between the sun and the panel all translate
into the need for a bigger panel than you might think.

PowerFilm sells a daisy-chain cable for hooking two panels together. It is
expensive, but it does use their water-resistant connectors.

I'd appreciate hearing from others with more experience with portable sola

[Elecraft] KX3 Operating Tip: Using the KXPD3 attached paddle as a hand key

2012-06-10 Thread Wayne Burdick
The KX3's attached keyer paddle is very flexible. Normally it is
configured for right-handed use (MENU:CW KEY2 set to LEFT=DOT). You
can reverse it by setting the parameter to LEFT=DASH.

In addition, you can set the CW KEY2 parameter to HAND. In this case
both the left and right paddles will function like a hand key.

The KEY jack on the left side panel has the same feature, under
control of the CW KEY1 menu entry. You can independently set up CW
KEY1 and CW KEY2. So, for example, you could use an external hand key
at KEY while using the KXPD3 as a keyer paddle, or vice-versa.

The connectors on the Powerfilm solar products are Delphi Weatherpack
connectors. They are inexpensive and readily available.

One source:

The link above is for a complete male and female connector pair. The same
place sells the individual piece parts, and the pin extractor tool (handy to

I have no connection to the above company; Weatherpack connectors are
available from other sources as well.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 hand key problem

2012-06-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ron,

There are failures within the K2 that can lead to a total loss of power
control and if that occurs, the K2 will transmit at its maximum power
even though the power know is set to its lowest position.

So, please do as I have requested, and with that bit of additional
information, please put an external wattmeter between the K2 and the
dummy load so you can report the actual power output.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 hand key problem

2012-06-10 Thread R Thompson
I realized that I hadn't mentioned this, and should have, when I posted
the message. During trouble isolation I had the power output set to
zero, right at the bottom. The band in use was 20M. Shorter shielded
cables, probably didn't matter if it was shielded, worked fine. It
happened with two different cable sets, one home made, the other with a
molded on connector, with leads maybe 8-10 feet of wire like that used
for light speaker twin-lead. With the key removed, just touching the
bare wire leads together and moving them apart, fingers off the wires,
would set it off.

Interesting, eh?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 hand key problem

2012-06-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
Ron,

Like other similar problems, we have to determine whether you have a
hardware problem or an RF feedback problem. The answer to that question
is usually determined by asking you to transmit into a dummy load (with
no other changes). If you have normal transmit into the dummy load,
then you have to solve the RF Feedback situation coming from your
antenna(s).

OTOH, if the problem persists when transmitting into a dummy load, then
you have a hardware problem to be solved, so post again with the updated
data.

[Elecraft] K2 hand key problem

2012-06-10 Thread R Thompson
I was looking to make a contact with my hand key when I ran into an
unusual problem. As soon as a I closed the key it locked down in
transmit. Thinking that there was a problem with the key, I tried
another with a different set of long leads, and had the same result.
Then I tried the leads without the key attached, as soon as I touched
the leads together it locked down into transmit again. The same keys
when connected to the key jack with shorter shielded wire worked OK.
Has this problem come up before?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issues

2012-06-10 Thread Kent Tiburski
Hi guys!

Seems I found the solution to my problem. I put ferrite cores next to the
amp AND I forgot the PTT line so that was added. Added one to the AC line,
there's two now. Now I'm able to get acceptable VSWR and run 350 watts out.
I never really thought that it was the amp's fault but my installation.
That's good cuz 6 meter prop is in so I'll work a few more Q's today!

I suppose that there is a lesson learned here, ISOLATE your installation
either by distance and/or add ferrite. I was pretty suspect that the
problem was the close proximity to the antennas. FYI, but thanks to all for
your technical support! It wasn't the product, it was the guy (that would
be me) and my installation that was the culprit.

Having said that, does the 500 maybe need a little more RF hardening? Not
a EE major, just asking the question.

Thanks Bob!

I actually did that and added those snap-on ferrite cores. I cleaned up
things a lot! I'm starting to think that there may be other things going
on. I took the advice of others that replied. Things such as using a dummy
load, no problems. I put the amp in STBY and when running 100 watts thru it
the VSWR was less than 1.5 to 1 and forward power was 100 watts (indicated
on the amp). I put the dummy load on the other end of my run of coax and it
was fine. Even with the extra balun and ferrite cores me thinks that it's
either the length of the coax or I have the antennas too close to the shack.
My 6 meter yagi is laterally about 30 feet from the rig/amp and the R8 about
36 feet.

Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks!

The R-8 is a radial-less vertical. Unfortunately it has a tendency to put
all sorts of RF down the coax as the "counterpoise" system is too short
given the wavelengths involved.

You might want to buy a heavy-duty coaxial choke from DX-Engineering like
the

http://www.dxengineering.com/Parts.asp?ID=1474&PLID=166&SecID=81&DeptID={112
450B5-E9E3-4F36-9166-E52FA128D019}&PartNo=DXE%2DFCC050%2DH05%2DA

I used a R8 for years and had trouble even with 100 watts of power. I can't
imagine how bad it would be at 500 watts. Your station ground is going to
have to be top notch if you want to avoid trouble.

Good luck!

[Elecraft] OT: Solar Panel Tests with K1 and A123 Battery

2012-06-10 Thread eric norris

To the best of my knowledge, an undersized panel can be used directly with a
gel cell.  I have read that you do not want to try this with an A123 pack, and
I was not going to risk it.

I then
hooked up a 10w PowerFilm panel, and it did keep up with the power drain,
essentially keeping the 4s2P pack fully charged as indicated by the Genasun's
LED.   I disconnected the panel, and drained the battery a bit, then hooked it
up again and it reached full charge as indicated by the LED, while still
calling CQ. I confirmed this after the test by hooking up the battery pack to a
Cellpro 10s charger which indicated the pack was at full charge.

I further crash tested the Genasun by disconnecting it from the battery, panel,
and load in random order to see if I could destroy it.  I repeated this in
every different order I could think of, and still it soldiered on.  Better it
get destroyed now than in the heat of the moment on Field Day.

The 5w panel showed about 300ma of charging current.  The 10w panel showed
about 600ma of charging current.  Put in parallel, for 15w, they showed about
850ma of current.  Note:  If you connect multiple panels in parallel you must
use blocking diodes.

I'd appreciate hearing from others with more experience with portable solar
power for the Elecraft rigs.

I have no financial relationship with any of the companies listed, though I am
still seriously in love with Elecraft :-)

The manual says the span depends on the sound card sampling rate, like
48/96/192kHz. But it does not tell what kind of band width one can
 expect.
As I read further, there seems to be a 15kHz limitation imposed by a
default roofing filter, and this will go narrow automatically under
 certain conditions.
Again, what kind of span can I expect, and will it depend on any
 filter
 settings or not?

[Elecraft] OT: FS W1 wattmeter w/case and stand

2012-06-10 Thread Ken G Kopp
I've recently replaced a W1 watt meter used with my K2
with a W2. I'd like to sell the now-excess W1 that's in a
W8FGU custom "smoked" case with tilt stand and rear-
facing BNC connectors.

The all-red SWR bar graph has been changed to 3 green,
4 yellow and 3 red LED's. It's been carefully calibrated
and I'm quite satisfied with it's accuracy. The case is
unscratched and the manual is included. Photos are
available.

The original package cost $137.35, plus postage. I'll ship
the unit via Priority Mail to US addresses for $100.00.

A few KXPD3 users have found that the paddles operated
intermittently.
This can be easily corrected.

First, completely remove one of the paddle thumbscrews. Next, using
a
drill bit that's somewhat larger than the #4 hole, add a * very * slight
bevel (countersink) to the hole. This will remove a small amount of
the black anodizing, allowing the thumbscrew to make consistent
electrical contact with the keyer paddle housing. (The thumbscrew's

contact the bevel in the aluminum.)

We've already added this step for KXPD3s shipped starting today.

Almost didn't notice it above the Amp!

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Interface with Kenwood TS-590

2012-06-10 Thread Scott Manthe
You don't need the rig and amp to communicate for auto band changing to
occur. The KPA500 will sense the frequency of the RF and change
automatically. No need for the cable.

But, if you desire to interface the TS-590 and the KPA500, make sure the
serial cable is plugged into the (XCVR) port on the back of the amp and
in the "Radio" menu, set the parameter to "serial." It defaults to K3.

Be EXTRA REAL careful as the '590 has a history of spiking on the start of
some transmissions. Firmware upgrades haven't completely solved the
problem.

While the receiver is in a similar class as the K line, that single issue
was enough for me to vote it down (I bought the K3, P3, KPA500 instead).

Does the KPA talk directly with other rigs via serial? I didn't pick
that up in the specs. The amp will auto sense the band on transmit
automatically so you really don't need any cabling other than the ptt line.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Interface with Kenwood TS-590

2012-06-10 Thread Doug Person
Hi all,

I was attempting to demo my KPA500 with my friend's new TS-590.
Everything is fine except I can't get automatic band change to work.
Serial port speed is set to 19.2 on the radio and amp. Amp is set to
serial and polling is on. But no band changing occurs. I tried
different serial port speeds with no luck.

Anyone had any experience with the TS-590 and the KPA500?

BTW, the TS-590 seems like a splendid radio for the money. I haven't
seen anything else on the market today that is as comparable to the K3
as the TS-590. Not trying to restart the TS-590 VS: K3 debate. To each
his own. My friend has been a long time Kenwood fan and the TS-590 was
a good choice for him. Having had a chance to test drive it here in my
shack, it seems like one of the better values today. I'll have it here
for about a week so I'll get a chance to really ring it out. Looks like
a fine example of a compliment through imitation.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 External Monitor Displaying CW at HamCom Yesterday

2012-06-10 Thread Jiim Sheldon
Since Eric probably isn't back home yet, and I was there helping them
with the displays, I'll answer this as best I can.

It was some new code for the P3SVGA that iwios still in test and hasn't
been released to the public as a Beta version yet. The CW, PSK and RTTY
decode is not being done in the SVGA option, but in the K3 itself. It's
the same data that shows up in the VFO-B area on the K3's LCD display,
just being passed to the P3's SVGA option and displayed on the big
screen. The USB keyboard interface is already included in the P3SVGA
option but the code is still being worked on. I wasn't told how soon
this would be out in the world, but the display of the K3's decoded data
is at least working. I believe, and Eric will correct me if I'm wrong
that even though there won't be a keyboard interface without having the
SVGA installed in the P3 that eventually the decoded DATA will be able
to be displayed on the P3's screen.

That's about all the info I have that I feel comfortable passing on
right now and once Eric gets home and rested up from the show (which
was, by the way, a good one.) Lots of interest in all things Elecraft
and especially in the KX3 and the P3 with the SVGA adapter. Eric's wife
Lerma was pretty much kept busy taking orders for all sorts of stuff.
It was nice that the Plano Center convention venue had open Wi-Fi available.

Of particular interest in the KX3 camp was the ability to use an i-Pad
and a little device called the i-MIC along with an APP to take the info
from the KX3 and display it on the i-Pad making it into a very nice high
resolution panadapter.

Nuff said for now as I'm sure Eric will have lots more to say about
Ham-Com when he gets rested up.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issues

2012-06-10 Thread Rick Bates
I came in late so may have missed a point or two.

The R8 is an end fed half wave vertical and the 'matching box' includes a
common mode choke. It has a very low angle of radiation. If it is on the
same vertical plane as your station, the antenna will 'hose' it with RF
(have that situation here, so I'm waiting for the KAT500 to heat up the
dipole; it's 50' away). Placing the R8 directly above your station puts you
in a null, which may give enough lower signal strength to keep things
content and the added height won't hurt either.

This presumes that the 'matching box' contents are still effective as the
ferrite has been known to crack. It is time to pop open the side of the
black box and see how it looks inside (spider webs arcing, wires
burned/intact etc.). I'd look for a cracked ferrite, which may show good
SWR at low power, yet when it gets RF hot may do something completely
sideways.

What happens when you turn the Yagi away from your station (most nulls will
be ~45 deg off of the rear)?

When you add ferrites to the cables in the shack, don't forget that RF can
enter at ANY point; audio, USB/serial etc); filter everything.

You might want to buy a heavy-duty coaxial choke from DX-Engineering like
the

I used a R8 for years and had trouble even with 100 watts of power. I can't
imagine how bad it would be at 500 watts. Your station ground is going to
have to be top notch if you want to avoid trouble.

Good luck!

Yes, Bernie has it right - tip and ring are reversed in the manual, and
it is the KEYLINE OUT signal that is needed. PTT is an input. Connect

lead on the cable (from the PA Key to the ACC2IO) the KPA500 does go into
transmit without me keying the KX3. That is where I was before, I have to put
the KPA500 into standby to receive and then put it into operate when I want to
transmit. For your information I do use my KPA500 with my K3 and it works
perfectly. I did discount the custom cable between the K3 and KPA500 when I
connected my KX3 to the KPA500.

Is there any setting on the KPA500 menu that I need to change? Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] P3 External Monitor Displaying CW at HamCom Yesterday

2012-06-10 Thread Randy Farmer
I was told this was a test of new firmware for the P3SVGA. It seemed to
do a fine job of decoding both PSK31 and CW (they had two P3s running,
each decoding a different mode), although the signals consisted simply
of an endlessly repeated callsign. At one point Friday afternoon we had
a total power loss to the exhibit hall. The new firmware was
sufficiently robust that it recovered from this unanticipated test. I
didn't think to ask if keyboard input was also in this firmware, but I
don't recall seeing a keyboard connected to either P3.

[Elecraft] P3 External Monitor Displaying CW at HamCom Yesterday

2012-06-10 Thread W5RDW
I saw one of the monitors that was hooked up to a P3 at HamCom Yesterday
displaying scrolling CW on the bottom part of the screen along with the band
scan on the top of the screen.

Is this the "P3 Keyboard input and data display" that was mentioned earlier
as a feature coming down the pike? :)

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Issues

2012-06-10 Thread Dave Johnson
What does it do into a 50 Ohm load?

The KPA500 will play up if you have an SWR of 2:1, or higher, when
running near full power.

Also, your posting had no line feeds/carriage returns making reading
it hard work.

[Elecraft] FS XV50 50 MHz transverter

2012-06-10 Thread Frank van Dijk
Hi there,

My XV50 50 MHz transverter has to go. It has the optional XVOVN crystal
oven built in and has a spare ATF 34143 PHEMT (Q3 in preamp section)
secured to the inside of the top lid.
The unit is about 3 years old has seen little use. Asking 350 Euro's.

In case you might want to convert it to 70 MHz, I have a 42 MHz Xtal
(HC49) for you.

Please reply off list to pa7f (at) dx.nl

Re: [Elecraft] Picked up used K2

2012-06-10 Thread Don Wilhelm
Mike,

I believe you need to do a good IF filter alignment. There is a change
in sidebands for 15 meters and above. due to the placement of the VFO
above or below the received signal.

You will need the internal counter probe - if you did not receive it
with your K2 (and it is not inside), you will need to obtain the parts
from Elecraft.

I recommend you use an audio spectrum analyzer such as Spectrogram and
your computer soundcard to see where the filter passband is placed.

Look at the K2 Dial Calibration article on my website www.w3fpr.com -
part 3 of that article deals with filter alignment, although you may
want to do the whole procedure and have good dial calibration too.

John, there were quite a number of retired types taking the class. I will
say that this class should be avoided if one doesn't have significanly more
than the ten hours a week that the syllabus suggests (unless you do this
for a living.) They will be offering other classes as soon as this fall so
you haven't missed out on the only opportunity to participate. Now that
I'm a little more aware of what these classes are like, I don't if I'll be
signing up for a fall class. My wife and son are saying "yay, we get daddy
back" so I can't say this experience has be quite as positive for them.
