Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Rec'd today
John, Please be assured that all valid issues will be addressed by Elecraft. There have been some posts that speak to operator errors, but for those that address real failures, they will be addressed. If you have specific concerns, please feel free to post them here to the Elecraft reflector, you should receive a response - if that response is from someone like me who had been "*associated* with Elecraft since 1999, it may reflect Elecraft operating policies that I have been accustomed to, but not necessarily an "official" response. Other items are fair game - including "why does the K2 that I am currently working on fail the PLL Reference test" that I will be attacking tomorrow. The lack of specifics in your post just causes the "low level static" to be increased. We can respond to specific questions, but the "low level static" must remain just that because it does not address any specific condition. 73, Don W3FPR 59 PM, ohn Strandberg wrote: > Robert - I've been a little bit wondering same as you. [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q output for pandapter
Tony, Do you have to do this every time you want to operate? Richard Fjeld, NØCE "Buck, I have NaP3 running with my KX3, and it works fine. Set the global offset to 0. NaP3 will automatically balance images if you give it a strong signal to work on. I use my XG3 to put in a signal of S9+20 and tune the KX3 about 20 khz above the XG3 signal. You'll see two spikes, but eventually the right-hand spike will diminish. You can move the tuning around a bit, and finally you'll see the image drop to 40db or even more below the correct signal. When an antenna is connected, the images will be invisible in the grass." __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] LiFePO4 Battery Pack Performance
I recently purchased a 4 cell LiFePO4 12.8v 4.5ah battery. I fully charged the battery to 14.4v and then hooked it up to my KX3. Total hours of run time = 21.4 hrs. Settings = backlight off, high power and all the other settings in normal positions. I transmitted in ssb for what would be a normal transmit / receive cycle. I received in ssb and psk 31. [Elecraft] K3 Phones / Diversity Question
I just recently added the sub receiver to my K3. I've been using the Sub receiver (without diversity turned on) and all was fine. I have the Yamaha CM500 headset - one cable plugged into the Phones jack and the other going to the Mic jack. I also have an Icom SP-20 external speaker, and it's connected to the Spkrs jack. Well, I engaged Diversity mode and at first thought it was working properly. But, when I turned the AF to zero on the Main receiver, I realized that the audio on the Sub was almost nonexistent signals are there, but really, really weak. OK, so looking at the Config parameters, I noticed in the KRX3 manual that SPKRS should be set to 1. Mine was set to 2. I changed it to one and now have zero audio coming from the Sub receiver. Not exactly what I was hoping for. What do I need to do to get my headphone audio in Diversity mode to act as it does with the Sub turned on, but Diversity off? Confused, I am. [Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 - Failure to be recognised - Troubleshooting question
OK, my K2/100 has been operational since October 2002. Very recently, I started to get some INFO 080 errors, and then the K2 completely failed to recognize the KPA100. Looking at it on the bench, the Vdd at Pin 1 and 20 of U1 of the KPA100 is about 1 volt. OK, if the PIC doesn't get enough voltage, it is no wonder why the K2 doesn't recognize it. I removed the U1 chip, and the voltage rises to about 1.1 volts. U3 (the voltage regulator) is warm to the touch, which tells me it is likely current limiting. Pulled U3 off the board and it tests just fine (although I'll replace it with a new part because now it is rather smoogly). Put an ohmmeter across the 5volt point and ground and I read 13.8 ohms. Hmm. That's in the ballpark. SO -- it's probably either U4 - the MAX1406 or U6 - the EL5146C chip that's gone bad and is shorted out internally. I don't see any evidence of a solder bridge or flake or other issue. I suppose I'll order some replacements. Question: Which chip should I remove first? I'm leaning toward the EL5146C, since I was getting some odd-ball power output behavior before the INFO 080 issue raised up. Plus, it has fewer pins than the MAX1406…. Any other suggestions as to why either of these chips might have failed? While working with a Marine BG and his staff on a battlefield maintenance system, the General continued to press for schedule compression. He asked for a "ball park estimate," and my somewhat older and more experienced colleague said, "General ... Good -- Fast -- Cheap. Pick two." My KAT500 will arrive when it arrives. In the end, everything is what it is, and in the meantime, I continue to enjoy my K-Line. Well ... Hope I don't find I'm two weeks down on the list already. 73, Bob K2TK ex KN2TKR (1956) & K2TKR On 8/2/2012 8:14 PM, Hunsdon Cary III wrote: > Originally Elecraft estimated an August 15 shipping date for the KAT-500 but, > realistically, did you really believe it? > Of course not, delays are bound to come along and if it ships during the Aug > 31-Sept 7 window now posted, I'll be a happy hambut realistically, > it might be later but it'll be worth it. [Elecraft] KAT-500
Originally Elecraft estimated an August 15 shipping date for the KAT-500 but, realistically, did you really believe it? Of course not, delays are bound to come along and if it ships during the Aug 31-Sept 7 window now posted, I'll be a happy hambut realistically, it might be later but it'll be worth it. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Rec'd today
The other "method" is to just ignore it and use it for a week or two until it "wears in" I thought mine was stiff and quirky when I first got it, but it is not "smooth as silk" - there is still just sufficient drag to prevent the knob from turning accidentally in a mobile of portable situation - just a bit more drag than I use on my K2 or K3. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/2/2012 7:20 PM, Andrew Moore wrote: > Tex - if you're referring to the scratchy mechanical noise that occurs when > you rotate the encoder even when the KX3 is powered off, it seems that can > be solved by carefully removing the main tuning knob (remove rubber sleeve > to access the hex screw opening), carefully removing the circlip and washer > from the shaft, and polishing/greasing them. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Rec'd today
Tex - if you're referring to the scratchy mechanical noise that occurs when you rotate the encoder even when the KX3 is powered off, it seems that can be solved by carefully removing the main tuning knob (remove rubber sleeve to access the hex screw opening), carefully removing the circlip and washer from the shaft, and polishing/greasing them. There is no need to remove the nut that secures the encoder. Here's a post on the subject by Mike / W5EEA. I went through this process myself and it cured the scratchy. I did not polish the circlip or attempt to flatten the washer - I only applied some "fine polishing creme for all metals" to each side of the washer and polished that with a Dremel tool, then applied some white lithium grease to both sides and put it all back together. Scratchy is about 95 percent gone. Please be careful.. and obviously this is not an Elecraft-endorsed mod. Mike's post follows. 73, --Andrew, NV1B .. --- From: mikew5...@hotmail.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: KX3 encoder noise fixfor some Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2012 08:39:52 -0600 PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS FIX..unless you read this and think 'I have no problem doing this'. There is every chance you will loose parts or make things worse than they were (or may end up buying a new encoder). I found the scrapping/scratching stopped if you invert the radio and turned the knob. If you remove the knob you can see a "C" clip on the shaft over a washer resting on the body of the encoder. On mine the noise was coming from the surface finish between the washer and the clip. The washer rotates a little each turn and that is why the noise does not happen at the same spot in the rotation of the knob. Remove the washer and clip, make them flat and polish them, put them back on with a good silicone grease and it feels like a K3 VFO. If you think SM parts are small you will never see what needs to be done to the washer and clip. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not stick a screwdriver in your had or ding up your very nice new KX3 that works *just fine* without this fix if this is not something that sounds easy for you to do. Hello David, This is one of my big gripes about LinkedIn. When you first sign up, in order to get your business/social network going you need to enter e-mail addresses of your contacts. LinkedIn offers to do this for you by reading your address book. The unfortunate thing about this is that they really don't explain very well what they're doing and how they're doing it and I think this is by design. It's just so easy to miss the fine print and click on OK. So, if you have any mail reflector addresses in your address book this is how these get posted. [Elecraft] FWIW - Elecraft ATU L/C Ranges - All Models
FWIW, I posted a summary of the *different* L and C configurations and their value ranges for various Elecraft ATUs. It may have shown up with poor readability if viewed in "rich text" format. I also neglected the KAT2. Below is information for all Elecraft tuners, in an arrangement less sensitive to browser or e-mail reader text formatting: ELECRAFT ATU L AND C CONFIGURATIONS: KAT1, Configs=1020, L=0 to 4.9 uH (16 steps), C=0 to 300 pF (32 steps) KAT2, Configs=131068, L=0 to 20.7 uH (256 steps), C=0 to 2420 pF (256 steps) KAT3, Configs=131068, L=0 to 17.4 uH (256 steps), C=0 to 2600 pF (256 steps) KXAT1, Configs=124, L=0 to 4.5 uH (8 steps), C=0 to 140 pF (8 steps) KXAT3, Configs=131068, L=0 to 15.9 uH (256 steps), C=0 to 2680 pF (256 steps) T1, Configs=32764, L=0 to 7.5 uH (128 steps), C=0 to 1300 pF (128 steps) BASIS: The reactance configuration for all Elecraft is series inductance, with a capacitance connected to common before (radio side) or after (antenna side) the inductance (but not both) by a relay. The number of steps (NL) of inductive reactance possible is 2 raised to the number of inductance switching relays. All step sizes are equal, within the limits of practical tolerance or value availability. It is equal to the maximum value of inductance divided by NL. The number of steps (NC) of capacitive reactance possible is 2 raised to the number of capacitance switching relays. All step sizes are equal, within the limits of practical tolerance or value availability. It is equal to the maximum value of capacitance dividedby NC. The total number of all *possible* configurations is NL * NC * 2. However, if the total inductance has been set to zero, it doesn't matter which side ofthe inductance the capacitance is placed. Likewise, if the total capacitance has beenset to zero, it doesn't matter which side of the inductance the capacitance is placed. This eliminates four of the possibilities. The total number of all *different* configurations is (NL * NC * 2) - 4. Re: [Elecraft] K3- Diversity mode cw filter BW ??
Diversity mode is used to reduce fading on received signals. Although using narrow filters to listen to CW signals will improve your ability to hear the signals, but it will not reduce fading of the signals, as diversity receiving does very well if your antennas are placed properly. Diversity receive requires two antennas that are active during RX. This is why you will install an AUX antenna connection with the sub RX. Google "diversity receiving" to learn how and why it helps with communications. Regarding your question about CW filter bandwidth: I have in the RX and KRX3 identical filters for CW. 1000Hz, 400Hz and 200Hz (Matched). If I had it to do again I would choose for CW the 500Hz matched pair instead of the 400Hz. I use the 1000Hz very seldom, so I probably would not have it except for when working split in pileups where I might want to hear more spectrum where the DX station is Listening. [Elecraft] K3- Diversity mode cw filter BW ??
Hello folks. I'm planning on ordering the second receiver for my K3 soon and have a question. When using the second receiver in 'diversity mode' and trying to dig out a weak and fading cw signal, what roofing filter do you find most effective? I'm assuming in those conditions the narrower the better. I currently have a 400 Hz in my main receiver and would prefer to just match it with a second 400 Hz for the sub RX. Also, the 400 seems fine as far as crowded band conditions. I understand some question this but based on my experience, my ears get a boost of improved (SNR) noise reduction when the 400 Hz kicks in (as compared to when i only had the 2.7 kHz and narrowed to 400 with only the DSP). I can't help but wonder if having matching 200 Hz filters would improve copy-ability in diversity mode over the 400 Hz ones? So when using diversity mode for that weak cw signal, has anyone with both the 200 Hz and 400 Hz filters noticed any meaningful difference between the two? thanks for any advice. chuck AF4XK -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Diversity-mode-cw-filter-BW-tp7560197.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Wayne, With the magic decoder ring, that is easy to understand -- thanks! But, I can't help but think that having the KX3 Utility Program decode that and display the values might be pretty neat. This command is intended for use during automated factory test but may be of interest to operators as well. The response format is “AKaabbcc;”, where: aa = inductance bitmap in ASCII hex format bb = capacitance bitmap in ASCII hex format cc = misc relays bitmap in ASCII hex format At present only bit 0 of byte cc is defined: 00 = capacitance on antenna side 01 = capacitance on transmitter side Example: Suppose you get back "AK031A01;". First convert the hex quantities to binary: 03 => 0011 (L) 1A => 00011010 (C) 01 => 0001 (network selection) Now compare these values to the KXAT3 schematic. 0011 for L means that two smallest inductors are switched in. Add these together to determine the total L value. Similarly, add up the selected capacitors based on the binary value 00011010. Finally, you can determine the network configuration from the value 0001. In this case, the capacitance is on the transmitter side of the series inductance. If the ATU is not installed, or if the ATU MD menu entry parameter is set to one of the L/C test values, “AK00;” is returned. If the ATU is in “bypass” mode, quasi-bypass values are shown. (These were selected to approximately cancel out the ATU's own stray reactance on each band.) In AUTO mode, the working auto-tuned values are shown. [Elecraft] Remote Operation
Hi all, Last weekend I had the privilege of being invited as a guest to the Northwest FOC gathering in Seattle. The invitation came from my friend Shin, JA1NUT, who was in attendance. It was wonderful to meet this fine fellow after so many years of having chatted with him on 40 and 20 CW. I also got to meet a number of other fine folks with whom I have been enjoying lots of good contacts on the air. I will tell you that this group sure knows how to put on a superb event. Lots of things to do, great food to eat, and, of course, a lot of very interesting conversation. Even the spouses have a great time. Anyway, at our hotel we had a hospitality room in which Steve, W7QC, had set up his K3. We were on the top floor, and they had temporarily installed a multi-band vertical on the roof which performed very well. If anyone had a QSO with K7FOC last weekend, that was "us"! One of the more interesting highlights of the operating part was provided by Tof, DJ6ZM, who was also in attendance. He has his station in Munich remoted, and we even had a contact between Tof, in one room, and K7FOC, in the adjoining room! Tof uses the Remoterig system, and only has to bring one of the two pieces of the Remoterig system, plus the remote head from his TS-480--and a paddle, of course! Tof's setup in Munich is rather elaborate, in that he can actually control several different operating positions, and several different antennas. all of which are very substantial. However, the system doesn't need to be so elaborate in order to communicate effectively. Nonetheless, his is an awesome system. This wasn't my first exposure to a remote setup, as Paul, W9AC, had also shown me his remote setup a couple of years back when we were all at FDIM in Dayton. Paul uses the TS-480 also, but with a slightly different method of remote operation, which involves having twin K1EL keyers, one at each end. That system worked very well also. In any event, I'm getting very keen on being able to set up some sort of remote system of my own. As most of you know, Elecraft now has its own remote system using the "K3/0" remote module. I've not seen that one in operation, but I'm sure it works equally well. So, you have several commercial options available currently. If you are a K3 owner, the K3/0 may well be your preference since it gives you pretty much complete duplication of all the K3's capabilities from your remote location. This is particularly attractive if your remote location is some place where you can establish a somewhat "semi-permanent" setup, like a summer home, etc. As a portable, traveling unit it might be somewhat less attractive due to size, but perhaps not. We tend to view the K3 as a reasonably portable unit, and the K3/0 is no bigger. You still need something like the Remoterig devices, but it only adds a small additional amount to what you have to transport. Alternatively, however, you could use a rig like the TS-480, and only have to transport one side of the Remoterig setup plus the 480's remote head--a somewhat smaller, more convenient package for traveling. I'm still sorting out in my mind all the requirements for operating in this fashion, but it is most intriguing. It's also pretty impressive when you have something like W9AC's system, or DJ6Zm's system, as to what you can do and how effective it is. I'm currently up here in Oregon for the rest of the summer, and something like this would be very useful. I can set up a modest station here, but antennas are an issue. I have an extremely limited space in which to erect anything. I am getting close to deciding that remote operation may be my best option. I can still use something like my KX3 for "local" operation, but a remote system tends to eliminate complexities with various locations I might find myself in as we travel. Anyhow, just thought I would pass on my impressions from my recent observations. It's just another way to have fun with ham radio. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 I/Q output for pandapter
Buck, I've had results similar to what Tony describes. I'm using a external Griffin iMic as the soundcard. It works well, and I have been able to use a Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) to route the NaP3 audio to a 3rd party digital mode application (I use Fldigi). You still need an external cable to route the audio from the soundcard output to the mic input of the KX3, you can't use a VAC for that. It works just about like my Flex radio does configured that way, except with full break-in CW! My Flex-1500 is looking for a new home now. You can move the tuning around a bit, and finally you'll see the image drop to 40db or even more below the correct signal. When an antenna is connected, the images will be invisible in the grass. The cable that carries the I-Q has to be stereo 3/32" on one end and stereo 1/8" on the other end. If something is shorted in the cable, that would cause the symptoms you describe. Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA Keyboard
Yep, already done that. All but the full wave 40M loop are fairly isolated, out over the garage area. The 40M loop is about 9' over my head when at the operating position and that was a bit of a concern. Duty cycle of course enters into the equation and that sorta brought things down well into the safe level for even 500w, so I added the safety factor of driving the KPA500 at 10W yielding approximately 300 W at the antenna. That accomplishes a couple of things, one being not have to re-purchase antenna tuners :-)) (I have tuners at the feed points of the various antennas, more efficient that way.) You should also have some sort of galvanic ground isolation on the line from the KX3 IQ to the sound card. Also, If I recall correctly, the 0202 has a way to lift the grounds on the input lines. When an antenna is connected, the images will be invisible in the grass. The cable that carries the I-Q has to be stereo 3/32" on one end and stereo 1/8" on the other end. If something is shorted in the cable, that would cause the symptoms you describe. Anyway, I assure you that it does work and that in fact it makes an excellent SDR. Once you get it going, you'll love it. 73, Tony KT0NY -- http://www.isb.edu/faculty/facultydir.aspx?ddlFaculty=352 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3/SVGA Keyboard
Well, I guess I was just reading into it a version of my wish list Don. I am currently using a Logitech K120 from Staples. $15.95 and two RS Ferrites. Seems to work OK at 100W. I tested on all bands 80 thru 10 this AM and it checked out clean. But there is a KPA500 in my future I am thinkin'. 73s Jim, W4ATK On Aug 2, 2012, at 8:12 AM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > Jim, > > My understanding is that the USB option for the SVGA board is that it will > *accept* a PC USB keyboard. Re: [Elecraft] P3 hookup
Mike, Make it simple - put the "Y" cable at the P3 -- The short cable that comes with the P3 connects between the P3 and the K3. Set the baud rate at the P3, computer and SteppIR controller to the same value. Job done. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/2/2012 4:27 AM, Mike wrote: > OK, Mike. Re: [Elecraft] P3 hookup
OK, Mike. I did re-read it and I still am not sure what you mean. The phrase that's throwing me is "leg of the Y cable that goes to the K3 as the Elecraft leg" Presently I have a "Y" (from SteppIR). One of the arms goes to the SteppIR, one to the K3. The "stem" of the "Y" has a female DB9 that acccepts the cable from the computer. I have the manual. That's what prompted the question. Anyhow, it'll be here in a couple of days, and like you say, that'll make it clear. 73, Mike NF4L On 8/1/12 7:33 PM, Mike K2MK wrote: > Hi Mike, > > That is not correct. Please reread my response. If I understand correctly from the diagram on p 13, the RS232 path is Computer--->P3--->K3. Currently I have a "y" cable plugged into the K3. The cable from the 'puter plugs into one leg of that, and the other leg goes to the SteppIR control box. Do I leave that where it is? 73, Mike NF4L > > > > -- > View this message in context: > http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3-hookup-tp7560124p7560141.html > Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. > __ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I wonder if that's dependent on the chip. That speed must be manually configured in all three devices - the SteppIR controller, the computer and the P3 - and the SteppIR controller MUST be connected at the INput of the P3 (NOT to the K3) The connection between the P3 and the K3 will always be automatically reconfigured to 38400 bps (regardless of the manual configuration setting in the K3) so an older SteppIR controller cannot read the traffic at this speed. The newer SteppIR SDA-100 controller can handle 38400 bps so it could be connected to either the K3 or the P3, but again this speed must be manually configured in all three devices. -- 73 from Ian GM3SEK http://www.ifwtech.co.uk/g3sek __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
