[Elecraft] [K2] KAT100 odd behavior cured by reset of KPA100?

2012-08-13 Thread Bill Coleman

OK, I had a failure of U6 EL5146C on my KPA100, which caused me to lose the
RS-232 port, since the 5 V to power the MAX 232 chip was no longer present.

Once I figured this out, I was troubleshooting the rig on the bench, and I was
having trouble with the KAT100. My observations:

* The KAT100 would not turn on immediately with the K2/100. It would take
several seconds for it's lights to come on after the K2/100 powered on. A check
of Q1 and Q2 revealed that they were working as expected.

* Once on, the KAT100 would not respond to K2/100 control changes. Swinging the
power control from low to high power would sometimes, but not always cause the
KAT100 to change from low to high power and vice versa.

* When activating the Tune or Ant1/2 functions, the K2/100 would respond with
"not inst". Which is weird.

* Looking at the primary K2/100 Menu showed the ATU selection showing "--".
Pressing the display button resulted in "PA Ant1"

Trying to diagnose this further, I ended up going to the K2/100 Menu for the PA
and turned the PA off. After this, the KAT100 responded properly to all
commands, and the ATU menu showed the menu items.

Turning the PA menu back on and everything works. Weird.

Not sure what happened.

Now, I just need that EL5146C chip….

Re: [Elecraft] FW: TEN-TEC announces new amplifier

2012-08-13 Thread Ray Sills
HI Vic:

True... you probably could brew up an amp for less money. Looking at
the commercial market, there is an Ameritron amp for $800.. which
includes the power supply, too. It uses 3 type 811 tubes. Now...
it's rated at 600W PEP with 100W drive. So, with 10W drive, it's
output would be well less than 100W most likely. But then... it
wouldn't be an Elecraft amp. And it doesn't work on 6 meters.

While the new Ten Tec amp requires a DC power supply, which would be
an extra cost for base station use, it does work on 6 meters and it
quite compact. I suspect that the KXPA3 will be priced in the same
ballpark. Both the Elecraft and the Ten Tec amps would work nicely as
mobile amps, since both will have frequency sensing, meaning you could
mount them in a vehicle trunk or similar out-of-the-way location.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 and Mac

2012-08-13 Thread Bill Frantz
I belong in the itinerant casual operating category. I operate
from two main QTHs, in California and in New Hampshire. In
addition, I also operate mobile HF and backpack portable HF. I
am quite well served by RUMlog for these operations except for
location support. I used RUMped for field day and was quite
satisfied. I could easily transfer the QSOs to a new RUMlog log
for LotW upload. However RUMped also dosen't have any kind of
location support, and I was operating mobil (with my wife,
KI6DSLX driving). So I lied and said all the QSOs were from
Lewisburg WV when some of them were from a few miles away.

I am a big fan of paper QSLs, considering them an art form.
RUMlog's paper QSL support is minimal but useful, and being able
to log the ones received can be quite useful.

I have not heard of any logging program, Mac, Linux, or Windows,
which has decent location support. I think, but am not sure,
that with a GPS location, it is straight forward to look up all
the other information that hams seem to want, including: State,
IOTW, CQ zone (whatever that is used for), county, city, etc. So
it would be nice to get them all automatically with a connected
GPS, and automatically add it to LotW and eQSL (when they can
support it) uploads. Having them available to automatically
print for paper QSLs would be nice too. Note that the internet
may not be available during the QSO, but it is reasonable to
assume it is available during uploads.

Cheers - Bill, AE6JV

Re: [Elecraft] Transferring Configuration to another K3

2012-08-13 Thread N5GE

I browsed the Config files for both of my K3's and saw no noticeable difference
except the serial numbers in the file, but there is a checksum at the bottom of
the file that contains more than meets the eye. Besides, I did not compare the
two with comparison software like UltraCompare, so I don't recommend trying it
to anyone...PERIOD!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft KX3 and Mac

2012-08-13 Thread Rick Prather
The "best" choice for logging programs is very much dependent on your operating
style.

For the casual Op MLDX is slick, pretty and well done, it's also expensive.

For the DX'er I find that RUMlog is the clear choice. I think it does a great
job of filtering packet posts from multiple telnet sources and color coding
Country/Band/Mode info to quickly assess if a spot needs to be worked or
confirmed. The matrix display for each DXCC is exceptional and quickly lets
you know what you need to know.

RL's integration with LoTW is a one click upload and it is downloaded
automatically every time you open the program if you chose.

RL also does a great job of keeping track of QSL's by paper, LoTw and even eQSL
separately. The summary reports for each type of QSL are great too.

I wind up running RL as my primary day to day logger and control program (it
also has a great control panel for the K3 and presumably the KX3.)

Sometimes I'll also rum MLDX along side it since I have already invested about
$130 over the years in it. I use it mainly to do quick lookups on a call.

BTW, I also still run DXKeeper under XP in Parallels about once a week or so to
crunch log results but it's sure nice to shut it down and go back to OSX only.

Since you mention RUMped, I also use it mostly for RTTY contests.

Enjoy you iMac. I think I'll be replacing my 24" with the 27" soon.

It might be worth checking alternative sources for the iPod touch/iPhone 4
stereo adapters, such as eBay. Although the products are relatively new to
the market, you never know what you might find on auction.

Mike -

I use RUMLog on my K3 and like it /*much*/ better than MacLoggerDX, and
in my opinion support is better. The only thing I'd like to see in
RUMLog is rotor control. It's rumored Tom is working on it.

The KX3 is not in RUMLog's transceiver list. I believe the KX3 shares a
lot of the control set with the K3 (Wayne. Dick?). At the price of
RUMLog, it would be worth a try.

I tried Rumlog/Rumped and wasn't overly thrilled. I use MacLoggerDX for my
regular daily logging; I use the N1MM logger with Parallels in a Windows7 VM
for contest logging if I am playing a contest MLDX doesn't support since it
directly supports a lot more contests. MLDX makes a good "light" contest logger
and will work with most contests if you aren't interested in a running score or
some of the other "neat" features of the dedicated contest loggers. Don Agro
(MLDX's author) provides wonderful support and there is a very active Yahoo
group dedicated to it.

Paul,

If you want to use the K3 front panel jack with Heil mics, order their
Kenwood adapter for that microphone.

Most any computer microphone can be plugged into the rear panel jacks -
the Yamaha CM-500 is a good choice IMHO - the earpieces are comfortable
and the microphone works great. It was apparently designed to appeal to
the audio pros who would use it on a computer soundcard.

For iPod touch 4th generation and later you'll need the same solution
required for iPhone 4 and later. Instead of a camera kit you'll need a 3rd

For iPod touch 4th generation and later you'll need the same solution
required for iPhone 4 and later. Instead of a camera kit you'll need a 3rd
party stereo microphone adapter device. Details are on the forum.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Mics

2012-08-13 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

GM-5 works fine with the rear panel connection - you just need to
make your own cable as none of the Heil cables are designed to work
with a 3.5mm mono jack.

The GM-5 has a 4 pin XLR - you will need to break it out like this:

   XLR
1 mic return 3.5mm sleeve
2 Mic "hot" 3.5mm tip
3 PTT RCA tip
4 PTT RCA shell

The 3.5mm connects to the rear panel mic jack and the RCA connects to
the rear panel PTT jack.

The Yamaha CM500 boom mic headset is VERY popular, is quite comfortable
to wear, and both the mic and headphones sound great with the K3. Using
TXEQ and the K3's excellent audio processing, it's quite easy to make
the sound anything from full range to highly processed for competitive
contesting and DX chasing, and all the settings sound really good unless
you do something really dumb. :)

Cost is about $45 with free shipping from amazon and several other
online sources.

BTW -- I'm a retired audio professional, and still own a bunch of very
high quality recording and broadcast mics, but the CM500 has been my
only ham mic since a neighbor ham (also and audio pro) told me about it
three years ago.

The Pro-set Plus connects directly to the rear inputs. You don't use an
adapter; you just
plug the two small phone plugs directly into the appropriate back-panel jacks.

[Elecraft] KX3 Skeeter Hunt Fun

2012-08-13 Thread Bill Gerth
Yesterday, K9ZTV, Kent and I used Kent's KX3 to activate N0SS for the
inaugural run of the NJQRP Skeeter Hunt. The Mid-MO Amateur Radio
Club is now the holder of Tom Hammond's (SK) callsign N0SS. It was a
real honor for us to put N0SS on the air again for a QRP event using
Elecraft rigs. As many of you know, Tom was an avid QRPer and
Elecraft Field Tester before his death almost exactly a year ago.

The KX3 performed admirably from our site in the tall pines in the
Mark Twain National Forest. This kind of outing is just what the
doctor ordered to show off the KX3. We were able to work just about
anyone we could hear, including a few European DX stations. We used
an 84 ft. wire in the trees with a variable counterpoise to the BNC-to-
binding post adapter. The KX3 ATU didn't even flinch. The 2.3 AH
LiFePO4 battery was still over 13 volts after 4 hours of continuous use.

TNX to W2LJ for running the Skeeter Hunt. We're already looking
forward to next year!

Aha!

Now we have the motive behind the postings on this subject. So if I understand
this, we are to be comfortable when one uses a reflector provided by a
manufacturer in an attempt to influence that manufacturer's pricing of their
product. I am sure I am not the only one who had such suspicions, but to see
it so callously admitted to is amazing.

Re: [Elecraft] FW: TEN-TEC announces new amplifier

2012-08-13 Thread Adrian
Why do you need that connection? As long as the amp has its own swr
protection /bypass switching mode, then the k3/kx3 only needs to look at the
amp input match using its own swr detection and determine its power output
into the amp input.

If the load goes bad the amp protects itself, stays in bypass, then presents
the mismatch direct to the k3/kx3 which also then protects itself. A no
brainer.

But no connection to feed K3 or KX3 with SWR data. The AN762 and EB27A both
will have a PTC to control a fan. and LED for overtemp indication. No plans
to include SWR/overtemp foldback on gain. I am trying to hold price and
that gets difficult when you add the "kitchen sink"!

Go thru the process of sourcing parts on a piece of equipment like an amp
and one gets real appreciation for costs.

73, Ed
I am harboring hope to bring a few assembled amps to an outside booth at
Dayton next year.

Why irrelevant? The ten tec amp is a very good match for the KX3, let's
learn about it, then see what Elecraft offer's to better this
 deal in hardware and price.

That's what it is about, letting Elecraft know the benchmark, but I'm sure
they have done their research because they are smart.

So if you think it's irrelevant pull your head outa the sand, and don't be

Hi All,

Actually, I think this thread is totally relevant to this reflector given
the fact that it has the capability of mating nicely to the KX3! It's not
like we are discussing something that bears absolutely no relationship to an
Elecraft product.

In any event, I would add a few comments about the new Ten-Tec amp. I do
agree it seems to be very "aggressively" priced--in the wrong direction--but
that's Ten-Tec's call. I can't honestly say whether or not it is justified,
but apparently the folks in Sevierville think it is.

A good friend of mine, W5JAY, was a field tester on this amp, and he and I
did some on the air testing with it while he had it. I know Jay was
reasonably impressed with the product, and he doesn't give positive
impressions easily. I was actually going to do some "hands on" testing of
it after Jay was done, but I had to decline because of our pending trip up
here to the northwest. Besides, I don't think I could have added much to
the process since Jay is very good at putting equipment through it's paces.
Anyway, what I "heard" sounded very good, and what Jay was seeing first hand
seemed to suggest that the amp was a good product. I also saw it at Dayton,
and it does, indeed, appear to have a lot of redeeming features.

I have every reason to assume that the upcoming Elecraft amp will very
effectively compete with Ten-Tec's product. I'm sure most of us hope it
will compete effectively as to price as well. I'd be hard pressed to
justify Ten-Tec's pricing in my budget, but I also have a couple of options
on hand already. Heck! I even still have my old Ten-Tec 405 linear, from
my days of operating with the original Argonauts. In any event, it will be
up to Elecraft to make their product more desirable, and I wouldn't bet they
won't do it. I'm thinking, but I just can't bring any Elecraft product to
mind that didn't have, when it was introduced, some really unique and
intriguing features to it.

Anyway, while I know there is a very large amount of interest in an amp like
this, given the incredible success of the KX3, I'd be very reluctant to jump
on Ten-Tec's offering before I knew for sure just what the Elecraft is going
to offer. I think we've already been given a bunch of clues about close
compatibility. For just a small example, look at the instructions for the
KX3 regarding antenna selection and tuner operation. We've all heard it
said that "patience is a virtue", and this may be a very good opportunity to
learn how true that is.

Re: [Elecraft] K3-transverter interface

2012-08-13 Thread John D'Ausilio
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the KRC2 .. red-headed stepchild of
the Elecraft line ;)

I use a KRC2 with a K2 to switch 6 microwave bands in the Jitney ..
903 through 10G. The radio displays the correct frequency with the GHz
lopped off. I reprogrammed the KRC2 (no programming required, just run
a commandline utility) such that it turned on 2 source and 2 sink pins
per band, with another pair of source and sink which turns on for any
microwave band. The outputs of the KRC2 can do a few hundred
milliamps, but the total package power is probably limited to under an
amp (e.g. use drivers for stuff that uses more than a few 10s of mA).
I drive two 1P6T relays plus some logic and a bunch of DEMI relay
boards.

It's not out-of-the-box, but it's been very reliable .. you'll likely
need to be able to do simple "glue" circuitry, diode or gates,
drivers, etc to make a complete solution

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Transferring Configuration to another K3

I examined the config files for both K3 and KX3. They're both similar in
that each contains human-readable storage cell contents. KX3 is done
line-by-line with 16 or 32 bytes of stored config per line, and the K3 file
shows one line per byte of stored config info. They're not compatible,
which makes sense if you think about it. The content (regardless of format)
is also not compatible to a large extent; they're two different radio
architectures and cal data is mostly different between them.

Memory files are a different matter entirely. These are written to file as
XML, so they're an abstraction rather than the radio's stored contents
cell-by-cell. I don't know if Dick made them compatible between radios, but
I suspect he did (he may care to comment, and may have already done so).
Since we have a common K3/KX3 memory utility now, all that makes sense - the
common format. The storage abstraction between the two radios seems to be
identical (100 regular memories, per-band quick memories, transverter
memories). So memory files between the KX3 and K3 ought to be compatible,
and portable between rigs of same or different type.

Maybe one of the Elecraft gang will clear this up.

Not necessarily. You may need to construct an adapter for the GM-5 (I
don't know what sort of cable it comes with), but the ProSet Plus
should work fine when connected directly to the rear-panel MIC input.

I am somewhat new to list and definitely a new K3 owner just having completed

One thing to try is to program a memory on the K3 to send the PSK31 and see
if you're also missing characters using that method. Performing this test
would help identify where the problem is.

Re: [Elecraft] FW: TEN-TEC announces new amplifier

2012-08-13 Thread Edward R Cole
David and Don, I will have a ten segment bar-meter to show output
power (and maybe reflected) power on my amps. But no connection to
feed K3 or KX3 with SWR data. The AN762 and EB27A both will have a
PTC to control a fan. and LED for overtemp indication. No plans to
include SWR/overtemp foldback on gain. I am trying to hold price and
that gets difficult when you add the "kitchen sink"!

Go thru the process of sourcing parts on a piece of equipment like an
amp and one gets real appreciation for costs.

I am harboring hope to bring a few assembled amps to an outside booth
at Dayton next year.

Re: [Elecraft] FW: TEN-TEC announces new amplifier

2012-08-13 Thread Dyarnes

Re: [Elecraft] WSPR

2012-08-13 Thread Don Wilhelm
Scott,

Which Elecraft radio are you using K2, K3, KX3?
Which mode are you using?
Are you driving the audio sufficiently? With Elecraft gear on digital
modes, you must ignore the "common advice" to set the power to full and
adjust the audio level to get the desired power - that will result in
"power creep" if attempted with Elecraft transceivers - instead set the
audio level to the proper setting and set the power level desired with
the power control knob.
Proper audio levels:
K2 - adjust until you see some ALC in the bargraph and then back off
just until you see none.
K3 and KX3 - drive the ALC meter until you have 4 bars steady with the
5th bar flickering.

Re: [Elecraft] WSPR

2012-08-13 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
Hi Scott,

I'm going to assume you are talking about a K3 here (red light comes
on). I'm successfully running WSPR here on K3 #338. Here is my setup:

- Using DATA A mode (make sure you're not in REV DATA).
- While in TEST mode, I adjusted my sound card output to show a solid 4
bars on the ALC meter with the 5th bar flickering.
- Adjust the CONFIG:LINE OUT so that you see around 0db RX noise
displayed at the bottom of the WSPR application while it is receiving.

I'm currently testing a new antenna on 40m running 1W. I will be around
this morning if you would like me to monitor you or offer any other
suggestions.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Transferring Configuration to another K3

2012-08-13 Thread Matt Zilmer
I examined the config files for both K3 and KX3. They're both similar
in that each contains human-readable storage cell contents. KX3 is
done line-by-line with 16 or 32 bytes of stored config per line, and
the K3 file shows one line per byte of stored config info. They're
not compatible, which makes sense if you think about it. The content
(regardless of format) is also not compatible to a large extent;
they're two different radio architectures and cal data is mostly
different between them.

Memory files are a different matter entirely. These are written to
file as XML, so they're an abstraction rather than the radio's stored
contents cell-by-cell. I don't know if Dick made them compatible
between radios, but I suspect he did (he may care to comment, and may
have already done so). Since we have a common K3/KX3 memory utility
now, all that makes sense - the common format. The storage
abstraction between the two radios seems to be identical (100 regular
memories, per-band quick memories, transverter memories). So memory
files between the KX3 and K3 ought to be compatible, and portable
between rigs of same or different type.

Maybe one of the Elecraft gang will clear this up.

Scott, you don't provide any description of what you're doing, so it could
be a lot of things. Here are some possibilities:
Your transmitter must be set to USB and the carrier frequency must be set
to the correct WSPR frequency for the band on which you're operating. And
your computer's internal clock must be within +/- 1 second of the correct
time. If either of these are wrong, you will not decode any signals.

In addition, your audio drive must be set correctly, similar to the way it
is set for PSK. If it is not, you may hear but nobody will hear you.

Re: [Elecraft] Transferring Configuration to another K3

2012-08-13 Thread thomas.no...@t-online.de
Hi,
i invested a bit of time to analyze the config-file ..

There are different information inside this file
   - some are dedicated to a single device (calibration values,...) and should
never be shared
   - some are interchangeable (settings, ... ) and could be shared, but had to
be rearranged dependant on the konfiguration of the K3
otherwise one could only share configurations between equal configured K3
   - ...

One possible way would be to use a webpage to describe the configuration
(modules, settings, ...) and upload the config.
Each config would have to be separated into transverable peaces (by software
...)

Based on this peaces one could create a new config, or mix it with an existing
config.

This is technically possible but there is still a chance to 'scramble' your K3.

Maybe it would be better to use a software to control the K3, like a user in
front of the K3, to modify settings.

Same here BUT it would be nice if we could "swap" K3 configurations so I
hope somebody figures it out.

I wanted to set up a 2nd K3 the same as mine for a new owner and so i was
forced to do it manually for every setting as the other op didn't have a
laptop either.

*Matt,

DOH!..I missed that also. You are correct I suspect.

Come to think of it, the two K3's I was using had similar HW specs and
options but were not identical and therefore would not have worked the same.

It did me good to go through the procedure of setting up all the K3 'user'
settings and I helped with the EQ settings and all worked well through the

Re: [Elecraft] Transferring Configuration to another K3

2012-08-13 Thread Holger Schurig
So what he obviously asked (between the line) is a configuration
transfer of all the settings that are NOT transceiver dependend. E.g.
such a function coult transfer memory settings, but not filter
installation or calibration data.

Re: [Elecraft] Transferring Configuration to another K3

2012-08-13 Thread Matt Maguire
Don't forget that the configuration will contain calibration settings that are
specific to the hardware on a particular radio -- if you try to transfer them
to a different radio, they will not be valid for the new hardware, and you'll
need to repeat the alignment procedures. I am guessing that this is why a copy
operation is not allowed.

Re: [Elecraft] Transferring Configuration to another K3

2012-08-13 Thread Gary Gregory
*Richard,

Same here BUT it would be nice if we could "swap" K3 configurations so I
hope somebody figures it out.

I wanted to set up a 2nd K3 the same as mine for a new owner and so i was
forced to do it manually for every setting as the other op didn't have a
laptop either.

[Elecraft] Transferring Configuration to another K3

2012-08-13 Thread Richard Squire - HB9ANM
Trying to transfer my configuration to my second K3, K3 Utility taught me
this was not possible because serial numbers were not consistent... After
four years using the K3, I still have a lot to learn :-)

So I copied all the menus and Configs one by one, this took nearly an hour
but my two K3's now have identical settings.

I wonder whether anyone has found a way to "cheat" on the Utility to make it
believe it's the same transceiver? Or what is the reason why this apparently
is not allowed?

I'm just curious...

Some have been shocked at the price of the new 100w amp from Ten-Tec.
You shouldn't be. It's a 20x multiplier.
5w in. 100w out.

To get a quality amp at a dirty class c cb amp price is not realistic.

In a few words: when you squeeze the key, Ultimatic doesn't send
alternating dots and dashes - it "interrupts" whichever ones you were
already sending, to send the opposite character instead. The Ultimatic
logic is "last paddle pressed, always wins".

The Ultimatic system is more forgiving of small timing errors because it
doesn't ever store a trailing character from the opposite paddle. In
most implementations, Ultimatic allows plenty of time to release either
paddle (if that's what you need to do) before it takes a fresh look at
both paddles.

Ultimatic is favored by two very different groups of people:

1. People who can read Morse faster than their fingers will send it, so
they are *always* sending at their personal upper limit.

2. Extreme High Speed operators, who are sending at *their* upper limit,
too... but for very different reasons.

>You guys got me interested, and I have a keyer that supports it, so I tried it.

>Couldn't send C's or K's. Both of which are in my call!

Well, yeah... Ultimatic has got to feel different from the system
you're already used to. (If it wasn't different, it would be the same
:-)

But the main point is that both the K3 and the KX3 offer an extremely
limited set of menu options for the built-in CW keyer - which also is
the ONLY way to send RTTY or PSK from the paddles.

When the $6 K12 keyer chip offers a wider range of options than the K3
and the KX3 do, something is out of balance in the feature list. It is
surely time for those additional options (including bug and Ultimatic)
to be made available "inside the box".
