The coax WILL add some loss, and how much loss will depend both on the
coax and on the degree of mismatch. HOWEVER -- the additional loss due
to mismatch is often much less than many believe. There's an excellent
graph in the ARRL Handbook that shows this.

Some suggestions. First, ALWAYS use BIG coax to minimize the loss. You
don't need a premium coax -- a decent RG8 with a robust copper braid
shield is fine. Second, for both uses of the antenna, I would run coax
from the rig to the aluminum frame at the point of connection, and make
the shield the connection between the rig and the frame. Then simply put
in a decent coax switch to change between the two operating positions.

Third, once the coax to the house is hooked up, check the VSWR without
the antenna tuner, then use the graphs in the Handbook to first
translate the VSWR reading in the shack to the actual VSWR at the
antenna, then use that value of VSWR to see how much additional power is
lost due to the mismatch. If the loss is particularly high on any band
due to a really bad match, tweak the length of the antenna to improve
it. Most really bad matches with a long wire are caused by an antenna
that is very close to an exact multiple of half-wavelengths, or by a
dipole that is very close to an exact multiple of a wavelength. That's
where the 44 ft vertical came from.

Fred - I think Jeff was referring to how the name Buddipole was conceived, as
opposed to how it's pronounced. Bud-dipole makes a lot of sense, and I too
had never thought of that.

If that is what you meant Jeff, thanks for the enlightenment. My Buddipole
has given me years of good service. It is currently configured as a
quarter-wave vertical on the MURS band for talking to my non-licensed friend
down the street, so I guess it's not currently in ham service. Still works a
treat though!

Re: [Elecraft] rf gain

2012-08-26 Thread Stan Gibbs
Yes, Don, an EE INIT is not something one should do "arbitrarily". It did
fix a similar non-linear RF gain problem of that myself and others reported
on this reflector back in 2010, so I suggested it as a solution.

The process in the owners manual makes clear that a saved configuration is a
very important step if one does not want to undertake a lot of parameter
setting and calibration.

As to running the RF gain calibration, this did not solve the non-linearity
for me, but the EE INIT did.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Problem w/front panel switches

2012-08-26 Thread Fred Jensen
Well Phil's problem isn't mine, and I'm not even sure I have a problem,
but my K3 switches are a bit erratic. They don't do things other than
what they should do, they just don't always do it reliably. Going to TX
TEST, I'll often get a mode switch as if I tapped it instead. Others
are sort of the same.

I have a hard time keeping the radio stable on the shelf, it really
isn't all that good for protection against gravity outages [like an
SX-28 was :-)], and it does move. I think I need to figure out how to
get it really stable first. Then we'll see.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 antenna question: Using 'remote' groundplane and random wire

2012-08-26 Thread Don Wilhelm
Andrew,

I would suggest that you take your KX3 to the aluminum skinned trailer
and tune you antennas on all band segments. The take you KX3 with KXAT3
into the house shack and do it all over again. The 100 foot of coax
will make a difference in the tuning.

If all goes well, problem will be resolved and you can use either of the
Elecraft rigs with no problem.

[Elecraft] Bzzzzzzzzzzz from my K3

2012-08-26 Thread William Jaker

While attempting to set the vox /antivox /speaker / headphone settings on my
K3-100 (#2389) - and during a moment when I was not touching the rig - I heard
a pop on the audio and then a loud b noise which has not let up. At the
time I was using an external speaker but disconnected it and the noise
continued through the internal speaker. I cannot turn down the noise when I
rotate the AF or RF knobs, though in the extreme counter-clockwise position it
does change pitch.

The receiver seems to still be working properly, though the noise covers and
distorts weak signals. Audio also sounds ok through headphones, though with
that continuous bz right in front of me it's not easy listening. The rig
also seems to work well on transmit although other operators tell me they also
hear the b. It is there in all modes, and takes a couple of seconds to
start up when I turn the rig on. Needless to say, I don't like running the K3
while there's an obvious defect. I hope I haven't fried another DSP board. Any
ideas about what my problem might be?
Thanks very much & 73,

Bill Jaker, WB8RAETown of Maine, NY

[Elecraft] K144XV

2012-08-26 Thread k7ca

Hello,

I got a K3 kit in April which included the K144XV. It went
together fine and had about 10 watts output on 2M. I made a few FM
contacts and a couple of SSB contacts, the last one in the June VHF
contest. I tried 2m again this month and noticed the power output only
about .5 watt max. The K144XV utility in the command tester shows P006
with key up and P011 in key down. The T command shows T76C key up and
T32C key down. Current is about 1.25A key up and 2.5A key down. Any
ideas as to what might have happened? I checked the coax from the the 2m
module to the output connector on the K3 and it is fine. Where can I get
a schematic of the module? Thanks, Al K7CA

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 antenna question: Using 'remote' groundplane andrandom wire

2012-08-26 Thread Mike WA8BXN
Hi Andrew,

The best solution is to put a tuner in the trailer that automatically tunes
when it senses RF and a high SWR. Several manufacturers make such tuners.
Connecting the random wire to 100 feet of coax and then having the tuner in
your rig do the tuning will result in high SWR in the coax and a lot of loss

It would be better if you can't add a remote tuner to not use the trailer as
a ground and run your random wire into the shack and provide the best ground
system you can there.

BTW, this is probably a question that will be of interest to many others, so
I am posting to the reflector.

[Elecraft] K2/10 for sale

2012-08-26 Thread Bill Tubbs

I have a nicely completed K2, SN# 656, 10 watts, for sale.

I'm the second owner (bought this back in March) and the original builder did a
great job on it. All I've done since buying it is add the KBT2 internal battery
kit. The previous owner also installed a Yaesu main tuning knob which I wasn't
aware of until recently because I've never seen another K2 up close.

It also has a Ten Tec handheld mike wired for it.

It has:

KSB2 SSB
K160RX 160M
KNB2 NB
KAT2 ATU
KAF2 audio filter
KBT2 battery kit

I also have, but have not installed, all of the upgrades to make it current.
This would give you a little of the "kit experience" when you install all of
these. Looks like a new kit would run about $1400-1500 on the Elecraft ordering
page. I would sell it all for $1000.

Thanks for reading!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3: No RX - SWR 25 to 1

2012-08-26 Thread Matt Zilmer
Hi Fred,

To pin this down a bit further, maybe you could try an experiment.

1. Set the KX3's RX ISO to OFF. This is a MENU function.
2. Put the KX3 on a freq on 40m. Leave it on RX.
3. Put the "main station" on the same 40m freq.
4. Note if your main receiver can hear the KX3's LO (should be able
to hear carrier if RX ISO is OFF). You may need to offset the
receiver's carrier frequency a little to hear the carrier from the
KX3's LO.
5. If #4 is no, you may be correct. The synth isn't producing any
injection frequency. It's a good idea to have some type of antenna,
even a short piece of wire, so that the KX3 radiates just a little
energy that the other receiver can copy.

Just an idea

Good luck, but with Elecraft support you won't need it...

[Elecraft] KX3 antenna question: Using 'remote' groundplane and random wire

However, most of the random-length antenna solutions I've seen have

Re: [Elecraft] KX3: No RX - SWR 25 to 1

2012-08-26 Thread vk4tux
I would be checking the dc resistance of the the 50 ohm output > bnc back
through, as it sounds more
like a short than an open circuit.

Quite often an open will only attenuate a rx signal rather than silence it
altogether as a short will do.

Re: [Elecraft] rf gain

2012-08-26 Thread Don Wilhelm
I would discourage one from arbitrarily doing an EEINIT" unless you have
a stored K3 configuration file that you can load afterward.

EEINIT sets all menu items back to the default settings. It may be
necessary, but do know that you will have a lot of calibration to do
unless you have that configuration file with the settings from a known
good working time for your K3 (goes for KX3 too).

Try running the parameter initialization process, following the instructions
on page 66 of the latest owners manual. My K3 had this behavior at one time
and it was corrected by running EE INIT.

[Elecraft] 4 States QRP Group special event announcement..

2012-08-26 Thread Arnie Grubbs
Today on the Elecraft ssb net I announced that the 4 States QRP group was going
to have a special event station on the air next weekend...   This was a mix up
on my part..  the date for the event is Sept 8 and 9th.

Please see the groups web page at. 4sqrp.com

There will be at least 2 KX3s and possibly a few other Elecraft rigs on the air
for the " Big Brutus " event,  with the call of K0B.

We will be operating as the band condtions allow, around the "qrp" freqs and
also the hf pack freqs.   Look for cw and some ssb signals, and maybe even psk.

73 and I hope to see you in our logs!

Fred,

Please also be suspicious of the coax, the BNC connector and your antenna.

Can you receive well with that same BNC connector plugged into another
radio? Substitution is the quickest troubleshooting tool in cases like
this one.

2012-08-26 Thread Fred Carvalho
Matt, thanks I will do that tmrw. However if I had any trouble with any
circuit behind the receiver I still would be able to hear my transmission
using my main station. The KX3 is seating besides it. It does not hear
anything.
If it was an analog equipment one could say that the local oscillator stop
oscillating.
If no one reported this kind of problem in this list, I will inquire
Elecraft.

If the NR4C suggestion doesn't solve your problem, physically remove
the ATU and recheck if you have this problem. If the problem is with
the ATU, this will clear it up. Of course, you should get the ATU
replaced on warranty

Don't forget to reconnect the BNC internal conductor to the RF board's

Re: [Elecraft] Problem solved W2 power reading not functioning

2012-08-26 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Good news Don.

Some of those adapters are pretty flakey with widely varying output voltages
and lots of ripple on the voltage, even those supplied for use with other
electronics. Sometimes the first thing inside the electronic unit being
powered is a big filter capacitor or even a voltage regulator, while the W2
assumes a decently clean 13V supply.

Ok I found the problem with the W2, or problems.

1) The interface cable or CAT5 cable apparently was bad.

2) Power if not coming from the radio apparently the unit is not happy, I
was using the AC adaptor from my MFJ analizer as I did not have a power
cable that would fit it ready to go.

Changed the two items above and it is now working, auto range and all.

So I figured I better share.

Thanks

Recently the radio went mute. Also when trying to match the antenna with

It did that sometimes sometimes. Each time it went back to normal. Then
went mute definitely.
I have bypassed the ATU via the Menu, no change.
I have also verified if when mute it was insensitive, but receiving. No

Any ideas to start with ? Thanks

[Elecraft] KX3: No RX - SWR 25 to 1

2012-08-26 Thread Fred Carvalho
Hello guys
Need some help to start with.

I have a KX3 purchased in May. It has the roofing filter and the ATU unit.
I have not updated the firmware yet. Still with the one loaded in the
factory.
Recently the radio went mute. Also when trying to match the antenna with
the ATU, SWR displayed 25:1.
It did that sometimes sometimes. Each time it went back to normal. Then
went mute definitely.
I have bypassed the ATU via the Menu, no change.
I have also verified if when mute it was insensitive, but receiving. No
receiving at all.

Any ideas to start with ? Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Problem w/front panel switches

2012-08-26 Thread Jessie Oberreuter

I had the same experience several months back. Tracing it down, I
found that one of the encoder push-buttons had internally semi-shorted to
ground. Each front-panel switch essentially acts as a divider tap, so the
semi-short ended up shifting the effective tap point of every other switch
on the panel. I snipped the offending switch lead, and all was fine. As
a CW op, having that knob permanently set to cw speed hasn't been an
issue, but I do intend to send the rig in for a full replacement of all
four switch/encoders as soon as my KX3 arrives :). (When I contacted
Elecraft for a replacement part, I was told that I should just have all
four replaced, as the switch/encoders they are using now have a much nicer
feel than the first gen ones used in my #286 K3, and I would notice the
difference in feel between a single new part and the old ones.)

HI Guys,

I have a used W2 that has the 2kw transmitter that is not functioning
properly.

I can get it to read out swr on the led's if it is on the 20w range setting.
If I use auto it selects the 20w range and only measures swr.

There is no outputs on the led's for the power other then the 1 led being
lit.

When trying to do a TX as long as I am at 20w or less the swr leds light but
again no power led's light up.

I have tried both the sensor 1 and sensor 2 ports but it does not make a
difference.

I has the 12v power on mod done by the previous owner.

Anyway are there any ideas on what to look for or is this thing going to
have to go to elecraft for repairs.

Thanks
Don

Re: [Elecraft] Problem solved W2 power reading not functioning

2012-08-26 Thread goldtr8
Ok I found the problem with the W2, or problems.

1) The interface cable or CAT5 cable apparently was bad.

2) Power if not coming from the radio apparently the unit is not happy,
I was using the AC adaptor from my MFJ analizer as I did not have a
power cable that would fit it ready to go.

Changed the two items above and it is now working, auto range and all.

So I figured I better share.

Thanks

It might be interesting to get the W2 Utility running, and see if you
get a forward power measurement on that. I sounds like it is actually
measuring forward power, as the range is automatically changing
(evidenced by "SWR" only showing below 20W, although it's not clear,
from your description, what you see with auto-ranging and higher than
20W forward power) it seems to maybe suggest a problem with the
LED display...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Suggestion - Remember Frequency per Band Mode

2012-08-26 Thread Bill W
This might be a very later reply but it you use the "K3 / KX3 Frequency
Memory Editor" software available off the Elecraft Website, to make loading
both Frequency and Mode starting points for each band a breeze. You can then
just hold M>V and your memory detail/discription will be shown on the VFO B
window. You can then use VFO A to select the band segment and mode you
loaded. Then tap M>V and you are there.

Peter – Just connect the K3 0123 band data outputs to the THP ABCD band data
inputs. On the THP, tell it is a Yaesu input. The only issue is that when the
THP amp is off, it loads down the K3 band data outputs. The THP 1.5 and 2.5
amps really need isolation diodes to keep this from happening, though it is
really only a problem if you are powering other devices in parallel with a
turned-off THP amp.

[Elecraft] New convert

2012-08-26 Thread Tony Estep
A few months ago a ham buddy of mine, K0CEH, came over to see my HF
antenna. While in the shack, he asked about my K3 & KPA500, and I gave him
a 1-minute demo, and told him about the upcoming KX3. Shortly afterward, he
went to Dayton, saw a KX3 at the Elecraft booth, and ordered one.

My KX3 came while he was waiting for his to be shipped, and when he called
to ask questions about it, we started talking some more about the K3 and
amp. He came back to make another visit my shack, this time to get details
on my panadapter and software setup, and again I gave him a 1-minute demo
of the gear. It wasn't long before he had ordered both of them. I don't
think his KX3 has arrived yet, but he now has both K3 and amp set up and
running and is a delighted new user. So another joins the ranks of the
converted.

[Elecraft] KX3 intro at San Diego Six Shooters

2012-08-26 Thread Keith Heimbold
I had the opportunity to do a small introduction of my recently arrived KX3 at
the San Diego Six Shooters meeting in Santee, CA last week.

It was a nice time and many questions were asked and answered. Fortunately for
me there was an old time Elecraft expert in the crowd who was a K3 owner that
could answer questions about the rig and Elecraft that I could not (seemed to
be a personal acquaintance of Wayne's).

The biggest uproar in the presentation was when I told the group of the new
Sherwood rankings and how much this new rig costs in comparison to the FTDX5000
and other high end rigs. I made sure to mention that the rigs serve different
purposes obviosuly ie mine is destined to be my mobile, but even still I am
sure that an order or two will come out of that group of fifty or so attendees.
There was certainly a look of shared shock and dismay among some and nods and
smiles among many.

The interesting part for me was how I felt when presenting the rig. I was very
proud to stand there and represent being an owner of several Elecraft products.
I have done a lot of sales and marketing for my own business nationally and
internationally have done it for large G2000 companies and have not always felt
so stoked about what i was representing. However, I felt great talking abou my
K3s and KX3 in particular. Maybe it Is the hobby influence but it is special
talking about superior products with a tremendous value proposition like the K3
and KX3.

Wayne and Eric and crew really do have something very special. BZ Gents and
Ladies from Elecraft.
