Re: [Elecraft] SDR_Sound_Cards

2012-09-01 Thread M. George
I'm running a 0204 with NaP3 on The Release to Manufacturing build of
Windows 8. 64 bit, it all works great as expected They don't have the
Windows 0204 drivers on the website because it comes with them in the
box.(I found it curious why they don't have them on the website for the
0204) I also have a 0202 that works find in Windows 7 64 bit, you can
download these drivers on the creative website and to be honest, I think
they are the same drivers that come in the box with the 0204.

All running with an LP-PAN II of course. It by far has exceeded my
expectations.

LP-Bridge + LP-PAN II + K3 + E-MU 0204 + Windows 7/8... solid and reliable.
With N1MM or DxLab... with NaP3 cranking away. Very little CPU usage on a
nice i5 setup with a $120 AMD discrete video card.

If you want a plug and play toaster, get the P3... if you want
total flexibility with a smooth as silk sizable window with a great mouse
interface, go with the Creative E-MU 0204 and the LP-PAN II. If you are
trying to run this on some old dog single or dual core setup with a 13 year
old OS like XP... well then good luck.

[Elecraft] P3 Utility and Mountain Lion problem

2012-09-01 Thread Nicolas Drin
I tried this morning to install the new firmware for the P3 (beta SVGA
0105BEATA.ZIP) but I was not able to run the P3 utility (1.12.4.26). I use a
MAC and the problem is probably the new OSX (mountain lion) I installed few
weeks ago.
K3 utility is running fine.
There was a threat on the reflector on this subject but without solution and
no mention if the OS was Lion or the mountain lion.

Any suggestion or help ?

[Elecraft] KX3 CW Key Sluggish Response

2012-09-01 Thread Sanger, Joseph
My KX3 is behaving unusually this morning, so much so that I cannot use it for
CW. The first character is beginning, I don't know, about ½ a second delayed
from when I press the paddle (both dit or dah), causing just enough confusion
in my brain to obviate my sending readable cw. It's not the paddle itself; the
behavior is consistent even using my Begali outboard key. Adjusting the QSK
delay makes no difference (really didn't expect it to as that delay is the
'hang time', not the start time). Any suggestions would be welcomed and
appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] SDR_Sound_Cards

2012-09-01 Thread k3ndm
Tony,
You are correct. However, I think you missed my point. The discussion has been
concern over using cards that are capable of a 192KHz sample rate. My point
was, maybe stated badly, was that shouldn't be a consideration as Elecraft was
saying you really should stay at 48KHz, but 96KHz would be just OK . I was not
trying to get into a Nyquist discussion.

I think the concern has been the ability to see the entire spectrum of the ham
band being used. And, I was trying to say that you will see it, just 48KHz at a
time, software controlled. If the recommendation is to steer away from the
192KHz. bandwidth, consideration of a 192KHz. capable card is kinda mute. Go
for a card that has high linearity and low internal noise, and some of those do
not go to 192KHz.

Joe...

Good thought. Along the way to getting LP-Pan working, I had forgotten about
the
secondary CAT port in Router. I tried that, and as you said, it works fine. One
small
point is the need to load Router in the standard environment. Without it
there's no
control with NaP3. In that way, using my stated scheme is just slightly more
handy
but hardly enough to quibble over. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: FCC Exams

2012-09-01 Thread Buddy Brannan
I can answer that one, mostly, and only because I asked someone about it ages
ago. Hard to believe that was at least 15 years ago. So, before Eric yells end
the thread, as he will undoubtedly foo soon...

Anyway, all the 1X2 G calls were issued pre-WW2, and then they started with the
G2's, but didn't complete the series. Full licensees got G3, G4, and then G0.
Full no code licenses starting in 1968, I think, got G6, G7, and G8. Not sure
about G1, but G5 three-letter suffixes were issued to reciprocal licenses, that
is, until people could just sign W1XYZ/G0 or whatever (switching to the
G0/W1XYZ format in the mid-90's.) Unlike calls issued here, the prefix, GM, GI,
etc., denotes where in the UK the call is being used. Thus, G0XYZ, if he goes
to Wales, becomes GW0XYZ. No muss, no fuss. Oh, and GB prefixes are special
calls. Like special events, repeaters, probably club stations as well.

When the G0 series finished up, they moved on to the M series for full
licenses. M3 and M6 are reserved for the fairly recent Foundation class
license.

2E licenses are the old UK novice. Which I believe is now intermediate license.
50 watts. I think I'm right about that, but I might not be full on.

Anyone want to fill in the gaps and correct me where I err?

[Elecraft] OT: FCC Exams

2012-09-01 Thread Mike, W9QS
In the late 80#39;s it was time to upgrade. I held a conditional for 30 years.
After lots of studing and code practice I made the trip to Chicago and took
both the advanced and extra. Had to take them in order: advanced, extra 20
wpm, and then Extra written. It was a long day but passed all three. I
remember two questions on CW test. Had to choose between physician and
physicist. I guessed right. Antenna was also a 4 element wire beam. Those
were the days. Yes, they still used the tape machines and those WW2 headphones.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Speaker Screw size

Keith, the screws that are used to secure to speaker to the case are 2-56
1/4. However, they screw (self-thread) into the relatively soft plastic
speaker frame so they cannot handle any significant mechanical force beyond
holding the speaker in place.

Thanks Ron for the advice. We found a suitable way to mount the rig. My guess
is that we will need to revisit this down the road. We are about 35% complete
with the install. When it is done I will post some pictures of it on my qrz and
add it to my blog.

[Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 Troubleshooting - SWR high on low bands, Loss of power control

2012-09-01 Thread Bill Coleman
My KPA100 has been giving good service for nine and a half years. Back in July,
it was giving me an INFO 080 issue, which I tracked down to a defective U6 -
EL5146C on the KPA100. I've successfully replaced this chip, and now the KPA100
is responding.

Because of the part replacements, I have gone through the KPA100 alignment
steps. The first indication of a problem was during the SWR Bridge Null
Adjustment. While I could get a clear null, the display never showed anything
less than 1.1 SWR on 40m.

Next the Power Calibration. This went fine as well, but when I checked the SWR
on all the bands, I received a 1.8 SWR on 80m, and 2.6 on 160m. The highest
bands gave a 1.0 indication, but most of the others were 1.1, just like 40m.

I double-checked my dummy load with my external watt meter. It appears they are
1.0 on all bands.

Doing some full-power tests:

* 40m - K2 indicates about 70 watts (7 bars), but the external watt meter shows
100 watts
* 80/160m - K2 indicates about 50 watts (5 bars), and sometimes I get a Hi Cur
warning. The external watt meter shows 100 watts, or perhaps a little more.

Something is obviously wrong with the power measurement circuits here. Any
suggestions as to what I should do to troubleshoot this further?

2012-09-01 Thread Sanger, Joseph
Well, I just figured out the 'problem' with the delayed response of keying the
KX3 rig I'm LOL'ing.

I have been playing with a Bluetooth transmitter / headphone on the device ...
the audio sounds GREAT and it's really a pleasure not to be tethered to
the unit but ...

Well, I guess you can figure out the rest. There is a slight delay in the
arrival of the keyed tones to the headphone relative to my pressing the key ...
destroying my ability to produce readable code.

I am a bit red-faced ... but appreciative of those who offered help.

My KX3 is behaving unusually this morning, so much so that I cannot use it for
CW (I normally send at about 25-30 WPM; I now cannot send more than about 12
WPM). The first character is beginning, I don't know, about ½ a second delayed
from when I press the paddle (both dit or dah) and extra dits/dahs seem to
occur beyond when I stop pressing the paddle, causing enough confusion in my
brain to obviate my sending readable cw. It's not the paddle itself; the
behavior is consistent even using my Begali outboard key. Adjusting the QSK
delay makes no difference (really didn't expect it to as that delay is the
'hang time', not the start time). I don't take advantage of iambic modes
(although the mode selected is 'A'). Any suggestions would be welcomed and
appreciated.

I should add that I just updated the unit to the latest firmware: MCU 1.12 /
DSP 0.94, but the problem's relation to this may or may not be significant.
Thanks

Nothing earthshaking or innovative here, just a pair of accessories that I

[Elecraft] KX3 build question

2012-09-01 Thread w4sec
I am in the final assembly of my Kx3, And it appears that the KXFL3 is keeping
that corner of the case from completely closing (by just a little bit)- as in
both sides bottoming out, where the thumb screw comes in contact with the to
chassis. . With the FL3 removed, it closes completely. I have trimmed the
cutout fingers from the edge of the fl3. It does seem to close well enough, but
just not all the way. Is this a concern, or am I good to go?
Thanks and 73s,

[Elecraft] KX3 - Balun

2012-09-01 Thread Steve KC8QVO
I have had some parts around for a while now that I intended to build a balun
out of. I finally got around to working on one over the past week or so (I
started last Sunday night and did all the rest of it this evening HI).

My idea was to make a 1:1 balun that fit right on the rig for using the
internal tuner with a doublet, or any other balaned line fed antenna.

Below are links to pictures of what I came up with.

http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o117/KC8QVO/QRP%20Projects%20and%20Stuff/?action=viewcurrent=IMG_9333.jpg
http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o117/KC8QVO/QRP%20Projects%20and%20Stuff/?action=viewcurrent=IMG_9333.jpg

http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o117/KC8QVO/QRP%20Projects%20and%20Stuff/?action=viewcurrent=IMG_9334.jpg
http://s118.photobucket.com/albums/o117/KC8QVO/QRP%20Projects%20and%20Stuff/?action=viewcurrent=IMG_9334.jpg

I used parallel runs of about 15-17 of 18 gauge magnet wire, two stacked
FT-82-43 cores (Amidon), 3/4 stainless screws, two nuts, two flat washers,
two lock washers, two wing nuts, about 1 of 18g stranded speaker wire
(lead-in to the BNC connector), BNC connector for RG-58 coax, two small ring
terminals minus the plastic sleeve, and a small enclosure box from Mouser.

The BNC connector is bolted to the enclosure. It is a crimp style. I
soldered the center pin then used the rear nut/bolt part passed through the
wall of the enclosure as the mount for the plug. It is a pretty slick idea
and quite rigid. There are 10 wraps of the magnet wire around the cores.
Wrapping the stacked cores was a chore. I did not use anything to bond the
cores together first (no tape or anything, just the wire). Once I had about
3-4 wraps on there it stiffened up but it was a trick.

One addition I may make to the balun is a piece of plastic between the turns
and the ring terminal crimps along the sides. I would imagine having the
terminals that close (right against) the windings is not a good idea.

I have another idea for a balun that is identically designed with a chassis
mount BNC connector (single hole, not the 2 or 4 hole flanges) for use as a
dipole feed point. I have a T80-2 Amidon core wound up already, again 10
windings of the 18g magnet wire. This fit too tight inside the small square
enclosure but I have some that are rectangular and will have about twice the
vertical space. This will let me space out the ring terminals at the top as
well as have plenty of space for wiring the bulkhead BNC connector on the
bottom.

Steve, KC8QVO

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Key Sluggish Response

2012-09-01 Thread Bill Frantz
Thanks for telling us about this feature.

I remember one of the jokes we played on announcers at the
collage radio stations. We would set up a short delay with a 3
head tape recorder and patch it into the audio line when the
record stopped. The DJ would then hear his voice delayed by
about 1/2 second. The universal reaction was to tear off the
headphones, finish speaking, start a new record, and come
looking for us.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] KPA100 Troubleshooting - SWR high on low bands, Loss of power control

2012-09-01 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

I am puzzled why a bad EL5146C would cause an INFO 080 problem. INFO 080
normally is the inability of the MCU to properly communicate with
another firmware processor. While it is entirely possible that the
EL5146C was dragging down the output of the +5v regulator and causing
the KPA100 firmware IC to fault, but I cannot tell from this distance.

As for your wattmeter problems, I suspect that the diodes D16 and D17
may be half bad. Yes, that is rare, but possible - they have been
damaged enough to change their characteristics but not make them either
open or shorted.

I would recommend arbitrarily replacing them and then try the wattmeter
calibration again.
For initial settings, adjust R26 to produce 43k ohms to ground as
measured at U5 pin 5, and R27 to give 43k ohms as measured at U5 pin 3.

After that do the null adjustment and see what happens.

I just returned from the Shelby, NC hamfest - a good time was had by all
even though it was quite hot and humid.

Don W3FPR

On 9/1/2012 4:31 PM, Bill Coleman wrote:
My KPA100 has been giving good service for nine and a half years. Back in
July, it was giving me an INFO 080 issue, which I tracked down to a defective
U6 - EL5146C on the KPA100. I've successfully replaced this chip, and now the
 KPA100 is responding.

Because of the part replacements, I have gone through the KPA100 alignment
steps. The first indication of a problem was during the SWR Bridge Null
Adjustment. While I could get a clear null, the display never showed anything
less than 1.1 SWR on 40m.

Next the Power Calibration. This went fine as well, but when I checked the
SWR on all the bands, I received a 1.8 SWR on 80m, and 2.6 on 160m. The
highest bands gave a 1.0 indication, but most of the others were 1.1, just
 like 40m.

I double-checked my dummy load with my external watt meter. It appears they
 are 1.0 on all bands.

 Doing some full-power tests:

 * 40m - K2 indicates about 70 watts (7 bars), but the external watt meter
 shows 100 watts
 * 80/160m - K2 indicates about 50 watts (5 bars), and sometimes I get a Hi
Cur warning. The external watt meter shows 100 watts, or perhaps a little
 more.

Something is obviously wrong with the power measurement circuits here. Any
suggestions as to what I should do to troubleshoot this further?

[Elecraft] KX3 Utility and iPad

2012-09-01 Thread Keith Heimbold
We are about halfway through my install of the KX3 in my 97 Silverado and it is
going well so far. We probably have another two days (16-20 hours) plus worth
of work to go before we are done with the install.

We installed the Rammount for the iPad and the KX3 and it looks epic. The amps
are mounted and the electrical and antenna installation is in progress. Still
need to pull wire from engine and new breaker and solenoid to bed and husky
toolbox to the deep cycle Optima battery and the amplifiers. The Hi Q 4/80 RT
is still in transit so that install will wait until next week.

In terms of control theough the ipad I am planning to use the iSDR software
with a simple logging program (MacLogger possibly) and upload later when at my
home QTH.

I was doing research on IPad ham apps and am looking for other control software
options. Even minimalistic control software besides iSDR. I was also curious
if the KX3 utility software and terminal will work on the iPad.

Also any perspective on new software developments for the iPad and ham radio
software especially the KX3 would be super appreciated.

2012-09-01 Thread Jim Brown

Thanks for telling us about this feature.

Psychoacoustics is the study of the human perception of sound, and its
practitioners are a part of the Acoustical Society of America, of which
I am a member. The discipline is quite well developed, and what these
folks had learned as early as 1850 formed the basis of modern stereo
sound recording and reproduction. One of the earliest scientists was
Joseph Henry, inventor of voltmeters and motors, whose name is on the
unit of inductance.

Sound system professionals have had to deal with electrical delay
resulting from digital signal processing (called latency) since the
early '90s, when DSP came into widespread use in large sound systems,
and with acoustic delay that results from time of flight of sound from
live musicians on stage and big loudspeaker systems at considerable
distance (and height) from the musicians. Indeed, managing these delays
is a critical part of sound system design, especially in large spaces
and venues.

When listening to a reproduction of our own voice, the human ear/brain
can tolerate delays up to about 60msec, but begins having fatigue with
much more than about 50 msec, and begins having serious trouble speaking
with a delay more than about 80-90 msec. As a pro audio engineer doing
a LOT of live sound, I've seen VERY experienced announcers turn to silly
putty with 100 msec. Musicians start having issues with tempo with
delays much more than 30-40 msec, which is why stage monitors have to be
so bloody loud!

A common real world example is a star singing the Anthem at home
plate, with an acoustic delay of 120-150 msec through the sound system
to the singer's ears. The solution is simple -- we give the singer
undelayed sound from his/her mic into headphones or a big monitor
speaker directly in front of them.

I don't know of any studies relating to delays and our ability to send CW.

2012-09-01 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Back in the old days many of us used no sidetone at all. We just listened
to the clatter of our straight keys. In High School I could chat with my
fellow hams in class with gentle taps of a pencil on the desktop.

But I agree, I needed sidetone when I switched to a keyer.

Funny, it was supposed to make sending simpler, not more complicated ;-)

[Elecraft] KX3/W1 Serial cable?

2012-09-01 Thread NZ8J
I have a serial cable that I use on my W1 wattmeter but don't have a
serial cable with my KX3 (I got a USB cable with it). Would the cable
for the W1 work on the KX3. I would assume so, but assuming has
occasionally got me in trouble in the past. :)

Comparing the schematic in the W1 manual and the notes in the KX3
manual, it appears that it should work, but I have neither a W1
(cable) nor a KX3, so I can't try it :)

Re: [Elecraft] PsychoAcoustics and Delay

2012-09-01 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

I don't know of any studies relating to delays and our ability to
  send CW.

Empirically the issue starts to become noticeable when the delay is
more than an element (dit/dah) and certainly becomes critical when
the delay is a substantial part of a letter. Just like the soloist
and the National Anthem, the solution is to provide undelayed sidetone
from the keyer rather than an off air monitor or RF derived sidetone.

BTW, another place acoustic/DSP delays have become an issue is with
live TV news. In the old days we used off-air analog signals or
analog cell-phones for IFB (interruptable fold back) but with the
advent of digital cellular systems and digital broadcasting, the delays
are well in excess of the magical 150 - 200 ms threshold. For TV
applications, the solution is to provide mix minus - that is the
program feed *without* the reporter's own voice - so the reporter
can interact normally with other participants.

Hi George,

Great to hear from you. Henry was mondo cool. A google search will
turn up lots of interesting stuff. For the last couple of decades of
his life he was the chief scientist for our country, founding director
of the Smithsonian. The entire US government closed down the day he died
and again for his funeral. I learned a lot about him when I did the
research to cite him has a reference for an AES paper I was writing on
stereo soud reinforcement around 2000, and invited an historian who
concentrated on his work to speak to our AES section soon after. One of
the things he was asked to weigh in on had to do with the physics of
propagation of sound from foghorns. Big deal back then, there were
multiple theories advanced, instrumentation to resolve the issue would
not exist for at least 100 years, and he publicly put his money on the
right horse. His work on the perception of sound and delay that formed
the basis of stereo was published in 1850, and it was quite solid.
There are multiple volumes of his scientific writing. I found them in
the Northwestern University library.

[Elecraft] K3--Digital Mode Question (New Tricks...Old Dog)

2012-09-01 Thread Dick Roth--KA1OZ
Finally waded into digital modes with FLdigi, but have a K3 question
regarding Line Out control. From what I could tell from the manual,
Line Out to my PC ought to be a level adjusted by Config: Line Out.
However, each time I turned down the AF control, the signal to FLdigi
went away. What am I missing? (I'd like to operate without the constant
whine of PSK ringing in the shack.)

Any help in clearing this up will be much appreciated!
