[Elecraft] KPA500: strange behaviour - any ideas?
Hello Group, I'm running KPA500 #1076 with firmware 1.23 installed. It's connected to my K3 via the elecraft AUX cable and is connected to my PC via serial to USB adapter cable using FTDI chipset. Interfacing functions with the PC and K3 work flawlessly. It runs perfectly apart from one intermittent peculiarity: unpredictably, when in QSO, the amp will switch from operate to standby mode. This does not trigger the Fault indicator and no fault # is ever reported by the KPA500 to the utility program or to the K3 LCD. It can't identify any triggers for these auto-tripping events. I simply return the KPA500 to operate mode and continue the QSO normally. This occurs on average once per hour of operation, rarely more frequently. Any ideas where to look for the cause? Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Microphone Connector
Roger, Yes, the up and down operation is by grounding those pins - a momentary pushbutton. As of yet, there is no function done by the Function pin. Back in the initial K2 days there may have been some operation thought about, but never implemented. Treat it as an NC - do nott connect to it until it is defined. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/23/2013 12:57 AM, Roger de Valle wrote: This is a question about the K3 Microphone connector, is it correct to assume that the UP and DOWN operations are achieved by momentarily grounding the pins the corresponding pins? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Strange S meter behaviour
Hi, Is the K3 with the crazy S-meter really old and without the HAGC modification? If so, doing the HAGC modification will improve this but in my case did not fix it entirely. Anyway, you should be able to correct the situation by doing the RX gain calibration with the optional S9+40dB step. The bad news is that your XG2 is will not provide this signal. The XG3 however, will. AB2TC - Knut PS. At 0F temperature this morning my remote KAT500 was still doing fine with no perceptible change in tuning. Richard Squire - HB9ANM wrote I calibrated the S meters on all my friends' and my own K3's with the XG2. All display S9 at 50 uV and S2-3 at 1 uV, which is normal. On one of them, however, signals up to S9+20 dB seem reasonable, but above that, the S meter goes to hardly believable +50/+60 dB, for rather unrealistic reports... (50 mV at the antenna, from stations hundreds of miles away??) This happens mainly on the low bands 160/80 meters. Has anyone encountered this kind of issue? 73 de Richard - HB9ANM snip -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-Strange-S-meter-behaviour-tp7569040p7569050.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Question Regarding Direct Conversion Receiver
The stability of a Direct Conversion receiver is determined solely by the Local Oscillator (VFO). It must be stable both mechanically and electrically. It sounds like yours is suffering from hand capacity effects. If it uses an air variable capacitor, it should be mounted rigidly and behind a metallic panel to reduce the hand capacity effect. If OTOH the oscillator is tuned with a varactor, the power source to the oscillator must be regulated for stability, and that is typically done with a zener diode. Is the inductor a toroid that is mounted rigidly to the board? - the toroid turns should be tight - this is not a place for loose windings. Since you did not give the model of that kit, so I could not look up the schematic, so I can only give generalities. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/23/2013 12:25 AM, Bernie KF0QS wrote: I now have a question about something I did years ago. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500: strange behaviour - any ideas?
KPA500 and K3 set up does this also. I have tried to duplicate it without much success, it is somewhat random. What I think the cause is, the output power of the K3 exceeds what the KPA500 wants, even though I have set it per band, I think sometimes there is a spike in power, causing the KPA500 to fault. This is a guess on my part, since if I cut back on the power on the K3 it does not do it as much. The other thing I have noticed, it does it more on certain antennas, so it could be related to SWR. I have the KAT500 too and SWR is checked before I transmit with the KPA500. I tend to transmit on the same freqs a lot. Some days it will work flawlessly, then the next day, with nothing changed, the KPA500 will have this problem. Please advise if anyone figures this one out. [Elecraft] KPA500: strange behaviour - any ideas?
This happens to a friend almost daily during our evening rountdtable QSO on 160m... Never on other bands. Since some seem to have cured the problem by changing antennas, my best guess is that this could be caused by RF in the shack. Maybe a few ferrite cores on the coax shield or a coax choke could help? Would be worth giving it a try. In my case, it happened only once so far - on 80m - although I'm using a window line right into the shack to a balanced manual tuner. [Elecraft] KAT500 Performance Clarification
Gang, I was surprised last night when I got a descent low SWR tuning my 80-meter (ladder-line fed into 4:1 balun) dipole on 160 meters. I have had the KAT500 for a couple of months and I never bothered trying it on 160 meters because on all previous attempts with other manual tuners I have failed to get a good match. But, last night, just as a lark, I switched up to 160 meters and gave the KAT500 a try. Sure enough it found a match of 1.05:1 at 1900 KHz with the Bypass VSWR reading about 17:1. Given I have most of the transmission line in lower-loss ladder line helps with the losses to the antenna with that high bypass SWR. This was at 100 watts out from the K3. Now, I decided to give a try with the KPA500 in-line at about 475 watts and the best I could get is about 4:1 tuned SWR. Now, I am not quite sure I understand the dynamics of the KAT500 with higher power. This is what I did. I tuned at 20 watts to the 1.05:1 SWR (bypass was ~17:1). At 100 watts, my LP-100A was still reading about 1.1:1 SWR. But, when I turned on the KPA500 (switched out of standby) the reading was roughly 4:1 with a fault on the KPA500. Question, how does the higher power affect the match of the KAT500. I understand how higher power might stress the KAT500 with maybe arcing or something but I don't understand why the match actually changed unless that higher power caused some change in the KAT500 capacitor or inductor components. 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 NR
Hi Geo, Here are the firmware notes regarding NR adjustment, which I'll also be including in the new errata sheet. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * * NOISE REDUCTION (NR) ADDED: Receive noise reduction reduces the amplitude of random noise while preserving desired signals. (RX NR is different from the VFO NR menu setting, which can be used to reduce VFO tuning noise on the higher bands.) NR works in CW, SSB, and AM modes. NR has a characteristic “hollow” sound. To turn NR on/off, hold the NR switch. Also see RX NR x menu entry, below. Note: NR is not available when AGC is turned off. * RX NR x MENU ENTRY ADDED: Allows the user to customize receive noise reduction (NR). The letter appearing at ‘x’ in the menu entry name shows which parameter is being adjusted: B (beta; tap ‘1’), D (decay; tap ‘2’), or M (wet/dry mix; tap ‘3’). The defaults are recommended, and this menu entry is locked to prevent accidental changes. The NR settings for CW are separate from those for voice modes. Using the RX NR menu entry: Unlock the parameter by holding KHZ for about 3 seconds; the VFO A lock icon will disappear. Then tap ‘1’, ‘2’, or ‘3’ to select a parameter to change. You can turn NR on/off while in the menu to test its effectiveness. The default beta is 5 for CW and 10 for voice modes. A lower beta will further reduce noise, but may attenuate weak signals. The default decay is 240. A much lower decay value will allow NR to track fading signals better, at the expense of somewhat worse noise rejection. The mix value determines how much of the signal is “dry” (unprocessed) vs. “wet” (processed). The default is 220 in CW mode and 250 in voice modes —essentially “all wet”. You might want to use a lower mix number to reduce the “hollow” sound or to minimize the effect of NR on weak signals. * * * On Jan 23, 2013, at 8:55 AM, w2b...@aol.com wrote: Thanks Wayne and Don for your responses. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Performance Clarification
Lets use the proper terms here please. Balun is incorrect because it is inaccurate; it is either a voltage or current choke. It may also be a transformer (4:1, 6:1, 9:1). A 1:1 current choke is recommended for ladder line to keep common mode RF out of the shack if one does not use a balanced tuner. Then use the shortest possible run of coax to the choke because everything downstream of the tuner is potentially high loss, more so in coax. Yes, the greater the bypassed mismatch, the lower the power requirements for the KAT500. Mine has issues (is borderline) on a 75 M double extended Zepp on 75 and won't load on 160 M. It loads everything else great so I can use the KPA500. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Performance Clarification
Hi, Phil. Although the KAT500, like most tuners, will attempt to find a match whenever it can, it protects itself from the very high voltages and currents that can appear on internal components when the match is poor. We rate the tuner for 500 watts at 10:1 SWR. When you use an antenna that shows 17:1 SWR (the untuned or bypass VSWR), the ATU measures the forward power and computes the power it can safely handle with the high mismatch. It's less than 500 watts. You should be able to operate safely at 250 watts or so with that high a bypass VSWR. If you exceed the ATU's safety values, it should illuminate the red FAULT led, make a fault log entry, and put the ATU into BYPASS at the next opportunity. It should also interrupt the amplifier key line. 73, phil, K7PEH __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Performance Clarification
Dick, Thanks, this is exactly the kind of clarification I was looking for. Now, if you or someone says this was described in the manual I will be ashamed and embarrassed. I already knew about the higher power at lower bypass SWR. But, I did not realize the lower power at higher bypass SWR. phil PEH's iPad On Jan 23, 2013, at 9:58 AM, Dick Dievendorff die...@comcast.net wrote: Hi, Phil. Although the KAT500, like most tuners, will attempt to find a match whenever it can, it protects itself from the very high voltages and currents that can appear on internal components when the match is poor. [Elecraft] K3; Main menu and Config menu settings
I recently downloaded the files N7US made of the K3 Main menu and Config menu. If you haven't done so, I suggest you download them from the Elecraft files. They show the Default, and N7US settings, with good explanations of what each item does. Also, there has been past questions posted about how to list, and save, your settings. Of course, the K3 utility will save them to reload if needed which is valuable. As was pointed out, K3-EZ will display them, but a screen capture will be needed to save them. HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe) will display them nicely, and changes can be made on screen, and/or saved. To do this, (per my version) you click on 'Tools' at the top of the screen. In the window that opens, scroll down near the bottom and select 'Extended menus'. A small window opens and select 'Elecraft'. It takes a few seconds to display as it scans your settings. When the screen lists all your settings, I call your attention to the yellow info icon at the bottom with the note that says Changes are applied immediately. I have not tried making changes this way, yet. Click on 'Text' at the top. A window opens and you will have four choices. I prefer 'Text, no border' but YMMV. Also put a check mark in the 'View File' box. From there, it will display all in Notepad where you will have options to Save, Print, etc. Rich, n0ce __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Performance Clarification
I think the MFJ 998 which I used prior to getting the KAT500 limited the selection of values for the L network based on the band and the assumption that 1500 watts was the possible power. I am able to tune much more of the 160M and 40M bands with the KAT500 than with the MFJ. Since I was using 100 to 400 watts and not the 1500 the MFJ was supposedly rated for, I found it's limits very restrictive to no good purpose. Good for the KAT500 in the smart programming it has. That would be nice. Re: [Elecraft] K3; Main menu and Config menu settings
One can join the Yahoo group and not get any addition email. Just join the list and select to receive message via the web only. Very easy. 73, Scott, N9AA On 1/23/13 8:01 PM, Gary Gregory wrote: That would be nice. Re: [Elecraft] K3; Main menu and Config menu settings
I'm glad others could use it. I used similar spreadsheets for Yaesu radios I've had. It really wasn't that much work, just copying and pasting from the manuals. I did ask Eric before I posted it originally since it's Elecraft's copyrighted manuals that I copied. I used to get paid for using Excel; now I do it for recreation! 73, Jim N7US -Original Message- Thank you, Jim! Hmmm. The one I get only has a single worksheet with the K3 material. Still very useful. 73... Re: [Elecraft] K3; Main menu and Config menu settings
I should have deleted that, original one. The new one is the one without the Excel icon (I don't know why), K3 P3 Menus.xls. 73, Jim N7US -Original Message- Hmmm. [Elecraft] K3; using QuickMix software.
Sometime back, I posted about the handy software utility (QuickMix) to save the computer soundcard settings for the various operating modes, ie. psk31, rtty, sstv, voice, whatever. It is very convenient and time saving. Someone answered that Windows7 doesn't let the utility change them. I just tried it on a Win7 laptop and he is so right. (Progress) Has anyone found a way to do it? I tried installing it outside of the Program directory and that didn't help. Re: [Elecraft] K3; using QuickMix software.
Rich Between XP and Windows 7 there were some very fundamental changes in the structure of the Windows sound management process, a lot of apps written for XP no longer worked and the only way to get the sort of application you are using to go again is a rewrite specifically for the new Windows 7/8 schema. Re: [Elecraft] K3; using QuickMix software.
Rich I also meant to suggest to try running the application with Administrator privileges and in the XP compatibility mode, you never know your luck Regards.
