Re: [Elecraft] OT: APP strain relief

2013-04-25 Thread Jim Rhodes
If you solder smaller cables you need strain relief even more. The solder
makes the wire stiffer as it wicks up the wire, making them more prone to
breaking in my experience. The heat shrink also makes them a little easier
to insert into the housing. Two layers of the thin stuff or one of the
heavier gauge.

Geoff,

Thank you for the idea on how one can measure relative IMD of the
amplifier,
I have finally managed to do that with my HLA 300 Plus that I use with
KX3.
K3 of my friend was used as the source. Measurements were done with QS1R
SDR receiver.
K3 itself, with 2 tone engaged and running 100 W showed 3dr order IMD
at - 28db.
HLA 300 Plus was driven by the same K3 (5W drive) and at the output of
around 180 W (20 m band) showed -25db of the 3rd order IMD. Anything above
200 W makes IMD unacceptable (- 10db at 300W). The situation is a bit
better on lower bands (160 and 80m ) where one can go up to almost 250 W.
Anyway it seems that with 5 W drive and output power of below 200W, HLA
300 Plus can be used on all the bands quite successfully.
I have also modified the amp to work from PTT signal only, and disabled RF
VOX in it.

RF band sensing remained intact.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: APP strain relief

2013-04-25 Thread Chip Stratton

Don W. has it right. Get some adhesive lined heat shrink (also called
dual wall). I put a length of small diameter over the wires up to the
APP, then a shorter length of larger diameter that also goes up over the
rear of the APP. This stabilizes the wires in the APP, allows gradual
bending behind the APP to reduce chances of fatigue failure from low radius
flexing, and also helps hold the black and red halves of the APP together.

While you are at it, get an assortment of diameters of this heat shrink.
You'll use it for all sorts of electrical cables, if you do that kind of
stuff. I seem to go through a whole lot of it myself. I've purchased from
 www.buyheatshrink.com and have been satisfied.

2013-04-25 Thread Edward R Cole
I just placed an order with Powerwerx for a special 45A pc-mount
connector and special #10wire plug to use 10awg wiring with my
amplifiers. The 300w amp runs 17A at 27vdc so the heavier dc wiring
will be useful (typical 60% effficiency).

I am building a CCI AN762 (5w/140w) amplifier kit and will use the
same dc connector. Estimate it will draw 234w dc load at 13.8v which
is 16.9A. I plan to bring the amp to Dayton to show and sell.

I am just finishing winding the cores for the six band LP
filter. Testing next.

[Elecraft] KX3 Beta firmware rev. 1.44: Easier NR adjustment; DVR message play dropout fixed

2013-04-25 Thread Wayne Burdick

MCU 1.44 / DSP 1.16, 4-24-2013

* NOISE REDUCTION (NR) EASILY ADJUSTABLE: The overall level of noise reduction
can now be set using the knob above the NR switch (AF/RF-SQL). When NR is
turned on, the present setting will be displayed on VFO B for about 2 seconds.
To select a new setting, rotate the knob before the display times out. The
setting is independent for CW and voice modes. Note: The range of this
parameter is 0-10, corresponding to the “mix” or “M” parameter of the RX NR
menu entry. See below.

* RX NR MENU ENTRY CHANGES: The RX NR menu entry can be used to adjust all
three NR parameters (B=beta, D=decay, M=wet/dry mix). The M parameter now has a
range of 0-10, matching the range available when the knob above the NR switch
is used (see above). As before, all parameters can be adjusted separately for
CW and voice modes. In most cases the factory default settings can be used for
beta and decay, and the mix adjusted for the desired overall amount of NR using
the knob (without using the menu). You can also now reset all NR parameters to
factory defaults by holding CLR.

* DVR PLAY/REPEAT FIX: DVR play no longer drops messages.

I think you mean that it will work WITH any generic QRP rig. :)

From what I see in Eric's email, it's the same concept as the KPA500 --
although it's specifically integrated with the K3, it works with any rig
that can give it a keying signal and the right RF drive level. It does
not need band data, it DETECTS what you're sending it and switches to
the right band. All you need is the KEY line to put it in TX mode
(that's an FCC requirement) and give it 4W drive to get 100W out.
That's 14dB power gain, which, I believe, is also the FCC limit.

parameter is 0-10, corresponding to the “mix” or “M” parameter of the RX NR
menu entry.

Note that that is true *only* for commercial amplifiers type approved for

amount of gain they choose and can sell a limited number of

All,

Quick question regarding SW updates for the KX3. I
will be starting the construction of mine in a few weeks
(already have it in the box in the shack).

When I update the SW do I have to download each and every
update in order, or can I just upload the latest revision
and get all of the previous updates ?

Thanks es 73,

Just download the latest. The KX3 Utility will do it almost
automagically.
Try it, and if the click on boxes in KX3 Utility are not intuitive to

[Elecraft] New kx3 PA/ATU

2013-04-25 Thread george fritkin
I have rethought the pricing of the amp and tuner. I now believe the combo
price will be $1299.00. I feel that way because, if the combo is priced at,
say, $999.00 it could have a canibalization effect on the k3/100 ATU. Yes you
lack the expandability of the k3, but for those who might not need k3
modularity the kx3 with the combo may be a better choice.

Of course, if you decide after buying the kx3 and combo, you need the expansion
abilities of the k3 then Elecraft gets to sell a second radio

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 AMP and KXAT100 ATU pics and info

2013-04-25 Thread Rick Dettinger
Morse Express sells SO-239 to BNC Conversion Kits. They are just metal plates
the same size as the SO-239 jacks. They have the same 4 holes and are punched
for an included BNC panel jack.
I have used them to convert my non Elecraft QRP kits and OHR watt meter. But,
I had thought that BNC was only for QRP power levels. Elecraft uses SO-239 for
their 100 watt kits that I have bought.

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 AMP and KXAT100 ATU pics and info

2013-04-25 Thread Walter Underwood
Oak Hills Research sells a similar BNC bulkhead connector that fits in a UHF
hole.

http://www.ohr.com/parts.htm

BNC can handle roughly the same power as UHF. The max voltage on an Amphenol
UHF connector is 600V. The max for BNC is 500V. A Type N connector can handle
1500V, so you can see how poor the UHF is for its size.

Re: [Elecraft] New kx3 PA/ATU

2013-04-25 Thread Phil Hystad
So, if everyone guesses a low price will this result in Wayne and Eric
rethinking their pricing strategy??

I think the correct price, albeit a bit high, is $249.99 and without the ATU it
is $189.99.

P.S. I am not offering my guesses for the sweepstakes, if my price comes in
and is the winner than buying it will be like getting it for free!
