I made my decision right after I heard Sherwood speak in the Drake forum at Dayton. He gave high praise to the K3, and I thought gave short thrift to the Orion 565, which I owned. After the forum was over, I approached Sherwood, asked him about his Orion remarks and the comparison to the K3. He answered me politely and directly. He was exactly right about the Orion. The encounter with Rob convinced me. I went directly to the Elecraft booth and ordered my K3 and P3 combo. I had been reading for some time about the great treatment owners receive from Elecraft. (I got the free hat) and I look forward to a long relationship with Elecraft. My Orion will be up for sale shortly, along with a few other radios to lessen the economic blow. The encounter with Rob convinced me. When Orion was first introduced in 2003 it was the best performing radio available. Unfortunately Ten-Tec management then went through a "dry spell" with uncharacteristically poor responsiveness and firmware support. Since John Henry took over engineering a few years ago, Ten-Tec has turned around and done several good things to refresh Orion including a really good Sub-RX instead of the poor one in the original unit. IMHO Orion remains one of the better rigs available today. There are still some things about it I miss (such as the flexible antenna selection matrix...not possible in the K3 due to limited front panel space). The moral to this story for any company is to always maintain responsiveness to customer input. So far that remains one of Elecraft's stellar strengths. 73, Bill W4ZV -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/After-Rob-Sherwood-s-Talk-at-Dayton-tp7574928p7574931.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] A Rob Sherwood's talk in Dayton
I have all 3 radios a K2/K3/KX3 the K2 was pretty much set aside when the K3 came home to me. Everything the K2 did the K3 did much better from QRP up and all modes I loved the radio and for a while the K2 sat till I decided to use it again for QRP. It is a keeper because I built it and built and rebuilt it till it finally worked fine with some help from Don. That was the case till I decided to buy the KX3 with all options at 1/4 the size of the K2. It blew my K2 away with all it had packed into such a small package and the really great receiver. Again the K2 was not being used for months till I loaned to a new ham to use that I knew for a month or so (now a Elecraft K3 owner) as of last week. When I got it back I decided to make better use of the radios that I own and that the K2 would be devoted to digital modes only. JT65HF/JT-9/PSK/RTTY is where most all the traffic is at any more so why not take advantage of them with a dedicated radio/computer have 3 in the shack. It seems most all of my contacts in the last couple of months have been QRP my amps haven't even been turned on. 73, Fred/N0AZZ K3 Ser #'s 6730/5299--KX3 # 2573--K2/100--KAT100 P3/SVGA--KPA500--KAT500--W2 -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Bill W4ZV Sent: Sunday, June 09, 2013 5:22 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] A Rob Sherwood's talk in Dayton Bill K9YEQ wrote > Glad I never discussed the same issue with the wife when I bought the K2. > I > now own the K3 and KX3. Re: [Elecraft] fldigi, SignaLink - problems
Dick, Did you connect the SignaLink to the microphone input or the Line Input of the K3? If you are using Line Input, you will have to reconfigure the SignaLink for Line level output - see the SignaLink instructions - as I recall it is a jumper inside that must be changed. Once you get the output of the SignaLink correct, use DATA A submode with the MIC SEL menu set to whichever input you are using. Then adjust the audio drive and the K3 "Mic" gain to produce 4 bars steady on the K3 ALC meter with the 5th bar blinking. Note that this is NO ALC for the K3 in data mode. You can do the setup in TX TEST so you do not bother your fellow hams with a signal on the air. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/9/2013 11:46 AM, Richard W Hemingway wrote: Hi, Mr K3 has arrived!!! Ah. Reminds me of the 60's when my band could not afford the top of the line Anvil road cases and resorted to buying amp case parts from Fender and others to build our own racks. Bob Heil custom built our mixers, EQs and mains and monitors for us. Another local musician, Jay Barry, began making "rack" road cases for musical groups in the area and many ham clubs put them to good use outside the music business. Back to "roll your own". [Elecraft] K3 v. others
I will offer my 2 Cents on this matter. 53 years of Hamming helps my perspective. When they first came out I built a K2/100 and still run it. I bought an ORION I early on, then an ORION II early on. Then I had two K3's, and other Elecraft kits. The latest is a Ten Tec Eagle. Elecraft are awesome kits on the order of the old Heathkits, and super tech support. The radios are excellent and can really dig out the weak one's particularly if you are physically small and can get your fingers around one knob and not hit the next one to it. Ten Tec radios are more suited to me. I like a radio that the controls are separated enough so I don't get fumble fingers around the knobs, the controls are more intuitive to me. I don't need to have the operating manual right beside me all the time in order to get to all the ORION's features. My 400 Ft wire serves famously as the sub receiver antenna- I use it to separate out the QSB losses, I don't need a better O II receiver. I would like a larger K3. The Eagle is under stated and under rated- I suggest you try one. The receiver is as sensitive as .the others I have, it is simple to use, and very portable. It is getting the most operating time lately. With everything good about these two companies, and all the positive attributes of all the manufacturers a couple things hold a major place in my buying. Which companies are American made and what is the ONLY manufacturer that let's you try their radio for 30 days, and if you don't like it- you can return it. I am waiting for a larger K3. 73 de Dave, K1OPQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Has the KX3 rescued Ham radio?
By all accounts the KX3 is a terrific radio (I own only a K1 and a K3), but claiming that it will "save ham radio" is a pretty unwarranted stretch. Revitalizing your particular interest is not at all the same as capturing the interest of someone young enough to significantly outlive us. If I was 25 years old and trying to build a new business for the long term (20 years or so), it certainly would not be dependent on ham radio unless it had something to do with estate sales. 73, Dave AB7E On 6/9/2013 9:58 AM, Dan McCoy wrote: So, to be fair, I was one of those gear hungry hams. Re: [Elecraft] A Rob Sherwood's talk in Dayton
Actually it is a bit less than 1/4 the volume of the K2. The Front Panel is about 1/2 inch less in length and about 3/16 inch greater in height (width for the KX3). The K2 is 8.5 inches deep, and the KX3 is a bit less than 1.75 inches deep. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/9/2013 3:18 PM, Fred Jensen wrote: Is a KX3 REALLY 1/4 the size of a K2? Re: [Elecraft] Has the KX3 rescued Ham radio?
I keep seeing this doom and gloom outlook from current hams. It is unfortunate, because it gives a negative energy to those contemplating Ham radio as a hobby. The truth is that we have more licensed hams than at any other time. We even have a good number of young hams -- including my 12 year old daughter. Since she got her license (the same day I got mine -- due to her interest) we have met a fair number of young hams, some who have been licensed since they were 9 years old. Re: [Elecraft] Has the KX3 rescued Ham radio?
The Raleigh area has quite assortment of both older and *very* young hams.. Some 8 year olds have been heard on 2 meters. They may not own a radio yet, but their parents have a 2meter rig in the car, and they speak up while riding to school or whatever with their own call signs... Outreach helps significantly. I spoke to a coworker who is not really interested in Ham Radio, but he *is* highly into electronics... having started down that path with Heathkits back in the 70's. Now he is the "alpha geek" at a large storage company (he is the go-to guy for all hardware issues, firmware and the like.) He almost got into Ham Radio back in the 70's..but the Heathkit robotics kit caught him... - Original Message - From: "Brendon Whateley" To: "David Gilbert" Cc: Sent: Sunday, June 09, 2013 3:55 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Has the KX3 rescued Ham radio? Re: [Elecraft] Has the KX3 rescued Ham radio?
My experience has been similar to yours, Dan. Off the air since 1967, I became licensed again April 1, 2013, bought a KX3 with all the trimmin's, and am now proud to be a part of the Elecraft community. Ham radio didn't die between 1967 and 2013. If anything, it has expanded. More bands, more modes, more everything except new young amateurs. The amateur radio community is all about having fun and communicating with each other via radio. The younger generation is all about having fun and communcating with each other too, except their medium of choice is the Internet and cell phones. We can introduce them to HTs and repeaters, but how do you compete with Facebook and Youtube? Maybe we can't. So instead of competing we offer alternative ways to have fun and communcate and use Facebook and Youtube to promote the alternatives. Ham radio doesn't need to be resecued. It just needs more participation from a younger group of people to really thrive and grow against the competition for more bandwidth. Use it or lose it, as they say. Coordinated efforts from all involved are necessary: ARRL, clubs, and local publicity in schools and colleges can all be helpful. Kit building seems to be driving a resurgance of interest in electronics and computers, and that can lead to an interest in amateur radio. Mentoring youngters who might want to become Hams works too. QRP CW is yet another avenue to attract new Hams with low-cost rigs and simple antennas. There are endless possibilites for recruitment to "rescue" amateur radio, much more than when I got my Novice ticket forty-seven years ago. But it will take more than just on-the-air ragchewing and posting to the choir in Ham radio forums such as this one. It will take a concerted effort. Join a club. Join the ARRL. Participate in high-profile community services that involve amateur radio. Become involved. Thank you for your revival in interest and your post. Hey, Don. I like the sound of my old 1950's metal National Speaker. True is has a bit more bass than needed but the K3 sounds much mellower than the internal speaker. For really tough to hear signals I use headphones, anyway. Ham radio, like everything in life, is changing. For some, that may feel like the Ham radio they knew is dying. I hope they realize that is an illusion. Aside from spark-gap transmitters, everything that every was in Ham radio is still in Ham radio. After 61 years on the air, the only difference that I find is that Ham radio has developed a much broader horizon of technologies and activities that fill our spectrum. 73, Ron AC7AC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] A Rob Sherwood's talk in Dayton
However, this needs expansion. The QRP K2 and the QRO K2 are the same size. The QRP KX3 is small as described but to make it QRO by adding the 100W amp it will probably be a close comparison. Comments on the list indicate that the amp is not tiny. With respect to features, that's altogether another story. Re: [Elecraft] Has the KX3 rescued Ham radio?
Re Dan's comment: <> I was the opposite type of ham. I couldn't see spending a lot of money on a hobby when I was starting a career with a house in Southern California, cars to pay for and maintain, three college educations to save for, savings and investing for future retirement, and three beautiful daughters ready to help keep my wallet trimmed down (I love them dearly, though). I sacrificed big expensive radios willingly so that my family could enjoy their interests. I maintained my modest station (TT540, a vhf HT, Model 19 TTY, 3 el. CL-33 on 30ft. tower, etc.), but eventually became more interested in microprocessors (I do not mean building PC's from pre-manufactured boards), and eventually drifted away from ham radio. About 10 or so years ago, I was introduced to QRP, and I found I could have a lot of fun with simple, inexpensive QRP rigs, built from kits or from scratch, paired with simple wire antennas. When I saw the first KX3, I knew it was the radio for me. I retired recently, and it became a retirement gift to myself, sparking a new interest in portable operation and being involved with ham radio in more general way. I still don't have a big station with all the latest big radios (I call them boat sinkers...as opposed to boat anchors), but I don't really want one. My KX3 looks very nice sitting on the coffee table (I have a wonderful wife!) and performs quite well for what I need. Occasionally I even hook it up to my laptop to run digital modes...great fun! As we strengthen individuals' interests in Ham Radio, we make the entire hobby stronger. Good to see you are enjoying the radio, Dan. I had outfitted my shack with every toy and gadget I could fit into my refitted closet. Then over the years I noticed that I was losing interest...first code, then data...and to be frank there was just nothing "new" and the hobby started to lose my interest. I sold much of my gear but continued to read and keep up. Then came along the KX3. I read as much as I could find, dropped an order for every extra component on a Friday. The ups man was at my door on Tuesday with the little radio. I bought the pre-built model so literally I threw 26 feet of Wireman 534 and a counter poise on the BNC adaptor2 min later I had a contact in Wisconsin. So why do I think it will rescue Ham radio? It forces us (ok, gently) to go back to being experimenters, operate remote, makes using code cool and useful, and to be honest just great fun. Great job Elecraft. [Elecraft] OT: Introduction to Ham Radio Talks at SF Bay Area Libraries
I will be presenting "The Wide, Wide World of Amateur Radio" at the Santa Clara, CA, Library on June 11th, and at the Sunnyvale, CA library on June 19th. 7pm both nights. I will have some ham radio equipment there for show and tell, grossly over-represented, of course, by Elecraft. If you have friends or family that are curious about amateur radio, please pass an invitation along. This talk is aimed at people who know nothing whatsoever about amateur radio. I will be following these talks up with a public demonstration behind the Santa Clara Library during Field Day, 11am to 2 or 3pm, on June 22nd, with a solar-powered station featuring my K2 or KX3 and magnetic loop antennas. Thanks for the bandwidth. This is my way of paying back those guys who set up tents across the street from my moms house in June, 1967, and explaining to 12-year-old me how ham radio worked. 73 Eric WD6DBM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 v. others
I don't believe Ten Tec has "outsourced" anything to China. They made an agreement with YouKits to offer their products in this county under the Ten Tec name. They did not design them nor request YouKits design them for Ten Tec. They were available for quite a while before Ten Tec picked up the agreement to market them in this country. In fact, they refused to market the 3 band version of the HB1A, due to concerns about it being able to reliably meet FCC TX purity specs. That is why they sell it as a 2 band version. I actually built a 3 band YouKits HB1A from a "bag o' parts" offered as a limited run kit back a few years. Mine worked fine, and was a good value for what it offered (and it met FCC specs with margin to spare)... Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Interesting, After 35 years as a ham I made my first ever 6M qsos last night with my K3. The ARRL VHF Contest was on and I have no 6M antenna but long ago I found my 160M antenna works nicely as far as a match goes for 6M (for 10M. 12M and 15M as well) but I never heard anyone on 6M ever. Perhaps the almost 400' run of coax to the has something major to do with that, line losses & all and frankly, a 160M inv-L on a salt marsh is not the right antenna for 6M much less contesting but... I managed to work 12 stations and 5 states on 6M barefoot with this minus gain antenna. So 6M was definitely intact yesterday. 73, Gary KA1J > I monitored 6 meters this week but to no avail. Re: [Elecraft] Has the KX3 rescued Ham radio?
Really good points, Ron. Most ham gear from WWII and much from before could be put on the air tonight and fit right in, particularly on CW. I could get on the air with my 1957 Novice rig (S-85 and DX-35) and nobody would know what I was running unless I said so. I still have my Drake 2B receiver from the early 60's. It's not as quiet as my K2, but it's still a very hot receiver and hears the same signals. In fact, for sentimental reasons, if I had to sell, the K2 would go first. hi. Not only are there lots of new technologies, virtually all of the old technologies are still used and even more convenient. RTTY used to take some serious money, serious time and serious devotion just to keep things running. Now I can fire up the K2 and a computer and I'm running RTTY without the smell of burning oil and a puddle on the floor. OK, sorry, I miss that, but others in my house don't. As much as I loved the "old days" of ham radio, the best years are right here and now. New digital modes are starting to crowd out my CW op time. You can do a "Parameter Initialization" as described in the Troubleshooting section of the manual. Basically, you hold the LABELS key while turning on the P3 with the POWER switch. Re: [Elecraft] P3 failure?
It sounds like a configuration parameter got corrupted somehow in non-volatile memory. Try doing a "Parameter Initialization" as described in the Troubleshooting section of the manual. That is, write down your FN key assignments and MENU parameters, then hold the LABELS key while turning on the P3 with the POWER switch. Wait until the "CONFIGURATION RESET" message appears on the screen and release then release the LABELS key. (If you have the power-on jumper in the P3 configured to always-on, then just hold LABELS and tap POWER.) Then re-enter the FN key assignments and MENU parameters. Re: [Elecraft] High pitched hum after installing KXBC3?
I finally had the chance to put my KX3 together over the weekend! Yay! I don't know if it's the same thing you're hearing, but there is a high pitched whine in the audio on my unit (it transfers from the speaker to the headphones when they're plugged in). Sounds like a G/G# ... maybe something in the 12.8 khz range? I don't have access to anything right now that can actually measure it. The volume of the tone doesn't change with AF gain -- tho what AF Gain mean in this radio is non-obvious :). It also doesn't change with band or mode, nor with a change of power supply (three different external supplies), nor location, nor presence or absence of antenna. I have the ATU and filter, no battery charger. I can easily hear it using the internal speaker, but I'm hoping I can fix that with a judiciously chosen capacitor across the speaker leads. I essentially can't hear it on my Heil cans, so I'll be fine this Field Day, but it turns up clearly on ear buds, so I'd like to fix that side as well. I don't recall having heard it on anyone else's KX3, but stuff in this range is pretty easy to either miss or misattribute unless you have good high frequency hearing and you're by yourself in a quiet room, and it could also vary from unit to unit. Finally, I won't claim to be pitch accurate up there, but until I can measure it on something, a good guess is better than nothing :). -kb7psg On Fri, 2 Nov 2012, David F. Re: [Elecraft] the net
That's been my experience here in west suburban Chicago, Richard. Every couple of weeks I listen for the CW nets. On a few occasions I’ve been able to hear the NCS signal in the noise but not well enough for any kind of sustained copy. It's also rare that I can copy the stations checking one. Every now and then, one of them is a little ways above the noise but not by much. Maybe there could be a Western Elecraft net and an Eastern or Midwestern Elecraft net.
