Re: [Elecraft] KX3 headset recommendation

2013-07-13 Thread paulb

Interesting to see this thread..
the K2 and K3 owned here have bags of
audio transmit gain. This allows the heavy
bass vowel sounds to be rolled off below about
300 hz. The KX3 seems to be slightly lacking in
TX audio; the not-so-great fix here has been to
construct a very small outboard single transistor
mic amp. It is powered from a small 9 volt battery.

I have tried using the mic bias directly to drive the
mic preamp but got into rf feedback troubles.

cheers

I decided to round out the K#UI line of Mac Apps with K2UI. It works with

[Elecraft] KX3 ATU

2013-07-13 Thread Richard Thorpe
When keying the KX3 microphone after switching bands the ATU indicator on the
KX3 display flickers then stops. This only happens with the initial transmit
keying per band. Is this normal? Thank you.

You need the ACC2 breakout cable from Elecraft. The PTT switch from
Aircraft Spruce just plugs straight into that. You need to configure the
menu item to say you want the contact closure to enable PTT.

but if you plan to use a ptt and the amp then you need the breakout cable

Alarm systems in general, at least in North America, are notoriously bad
for RF susceptibility. The coupling mechanisms are primarily poorly
filtered signal wiring, Pin One Problems, poor circuit layout, and poor
shielding. To the extent that it has less external wiring, a wireless
system MIGHT be less problematic, but those other mechanisms are still
there. Suppression methods are addressed in http://k9yc.com/RFI-Ham.pdf

Don't know what his system will be like, but the system I have as absolutely no

These data points only involve one brand of security system however.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and wireless intruder alarm

2013-07-13 Thread Jim Bennett
David,

I suspect that you'll probably be OK going wireless, especially running only
100 watts. Our security system is about 22 years old and is a WIRED system,
meaning a lot of wires (antennas!) running through the walls of our two story
home. With my K3 running barefoot at 100 watts, I experienced NO interference
to the system when using either my ground mounted Hustler 5BTV or my 88-foot
long doublet at 40 feet. However, when I purchased the KPA500 and ran 500+
watts to the vertical, it was a different story. Had lots of interference to
the security system and a few other in-home devices. I wound up placing several
ferrite beads on each end of every wire going into the control box of the
security system - a couple at the box, and a couple more at the "operator
panels" on the doors. Seemed to resolve the problem. With your wireless system,
you "shouldn't" have those problems at 100 watts. If you get an amp, all bets
are off!!!

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 in Contest Conditions

2013-07-13 Thread iw1ayd - Salvatore Irato

Hi all.
The KPA is a good performer. Even when it get at 70C temperature, it
doesn't crank down the power.
It's noisy that's right compared to no noise there is some when it is
hot. But with my previous experience with a 1K-FA by SPE it is much
silent than that. Power is comparable in between the two is comparable,
as the SPE have the specification for RTTY at the same 500W as the
KPA500. But the SPE loose power over time, the KPA500 instead doesn't
lose any power.
It maybe that the noise of the KPA500 is much better as Elecraft use a
big fan, that when scream have a lower pitched tone the the SPE. The SPE
use 8 smallest fan, it have inside much more modules, 3 instead of one,
of the KPA500.
That's why I switched over the two to the Elecraft one amp and I am not
regretting it.

Activity here is substantially only in RTYY: DXing doesn't produce any
remarkable noise; Contesting RTTY make it sounding for sure. But way
better than my older one SPE. You could survive without headphone with
the KPA500.
I have engaged several times the overtemp protection in the SPE in over
4 years of use. I tried to engage the same protection on the KPA500,
RTTY Contest CQing cycle, but after fifteen minutes at 70C I stopped the
test. That's not a scientific and repeatable test, maybe, but it's quite
enough for me.

I don't have a great station here at home but sometime RTTY RUN times
are really interesting as it was on the latest DLDX and before on one of
the 75 baud contest.

Take care also that the late season was 28C to 35C, it's pretty hot here
down with relevant humidity. I am speaking of almost one month since the
switch of the PAs.

For serious RTTY Contesting at legal power limit I would use a vacuum
tube PA.

Not to mention one sure thing, the way as the KPA500 is engineered leave
all the space for a great serviceability. It's not the same for several
other SS PAs.

I have Protection 1 and noticed an increase in noise level once the system was
installed especially on 6m. I moved my antenna from above the house to my tower
that is away from the house and the noise reduced significantly. Other bands
did not seem as affected. The antenna was above my house and not far from other
homes and residences so this might be coincidental to my neighbor installing a

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and wireless intruder alarm

2013-07-13 Thread Steve Glickstein
I've used a wireless home alarm system for 13 years with hf/vhf/uhf
antennas in the attic of a 3 story townhouse. The documentation doesn't
include specs. The antenna on the master unit is approximately 13 cm.
Depending on whether that's a quarter wave or full wave, it's in the
bottom or top of the microwaves. Using my K3 at 100w all bands doesn't
affect the system. Running 50w on 70cm does affect my 5.8 GHz wireless
telephone system. I'm guessing that it's crunching the receiver front
end or getting rfi into the master's control circuitry.

Re: [Elecraft] Trade off PR6 vs PR6-10 pre-amp

2013-07-13 Thread John Buck

Lou, I have received no other replies to my message. Additional comments would
be welcome.

In attempting to answer my own question, I suspect that the antenna bandwidth
on 6M would limit out of band issues. The slightly higher gain of the PR6-10
with the same noise figure then might be an advantage by helping overcome cable
loss. At least as long as strong signals are not overloading the front end.

I will probably not switch. I presently have a good antenna on 24 and 28 MHz
and do not really feel the need for more gain there. Perhaps if I did not have
the trusted PR6 I might purchase the PR6-10 instead.

I note that the specification for the PR6-10 has about 2dB more gain
than the PR6. The MDS and dynamic range specs are the same.

Would the 6 meter performance with the K3 using the PR6-10 be better or
worse than the PR6 because of:

1. Wider pass band? More opportunity for out of band noise?

2. More gain? Impact on overall dynamic range and noise figure?

My real question is should I sell my PR6 and get a PR6-10? I do not
want to lose anything on 6 meters but perhaps could stand some
improvement on 10.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and wireless intruder alarm

2013-07-13 Thread Jim - KE8G
My alarm system uses a combination of wires, for the doors, and wireless for
all windows and motion detectors. I usually run the K3 with the KPA500 at
around 450-500 watts and have no problems whatsoever!

[Elecraft] KX3 Mic gain ?

2013-07-13 Thread F5vjc
Well, I don't whisper but I hate to have to shout into a mic to provide
adequate drive. I'm well used to close talking a headset microphone, I use
the CM500 all the time on my K3 and there is loads of mic gain in reserve.
I have the latest firmware 1.50 in the KX3 and I still find the mic gain is
maxed out to give (almost) the recommended ALC action. What is your ALC
showing? I have tried mic bias On and OFF with no apparent difference. I
set the compression as advised. It sounds fine but I feel there is not
enough mic gain. This is the same, as I said, with another headset mic. When
I have time I will try my CM500 on the KX3 to see what that does.

Anyone else seeing lack of audio drive on their KX3?

[Elecraft] ERR FW2

2013-07-13 Thread aa4nc
Operating the IARU contest and a previously solid K3 would cease putting out
power, although it remained in transmit. After an hour of doing this
intermittently, I started getting an ERR FW2. Power off/on would clear this.
After another hour, I received a prompt on the front panel that mentioned
something to the effect of "Use K3 utlity program". After it locked up with
the ERR FW2, I downloaded the latest utility and all new software - MCU 04.67,
FPF 1.15, DSP1 2.81, DSP2 2.81.

It worked for an hour and I started receiving the ERR FW2 again.

Any ideas??

That, plus the K3's multi-section 6-meter low-pass filter (assuming you're
connecting the PR6-10 between RX ANT IN and OUT).

Unlikely; both the PR6 and 6-10 are very high-intercept amplifiers.

That is probably the case for most K3 owners. We had some requests for 10/12
meter coverage and realized we could create a PR6-10 with a few circuit
changes, but the rig's sensitivity on these bands is adequate for the vast
majority of operators.

The differences in specs will be insignificant in nearly all cases.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Locks Up

2013-07-13 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jim,

I can't point to any particular component, but first check to see if you
have an RF-in-the-shack problem
Transmit into a dummy load. If it does not fail, then look carefully at
your antenna system.

Assuming it fails with the dummy load as well as the antenna, then my
best guess is that the problem in somewhere in the KPA100 T/R switch area.

America I usually use 10 watts and for the rest of the world I use 20
watts. In both modes the transmitter is on continuously for one minute
followed by a minute off then another minute on, etc.

This has worked well for me especially considering that I have a low
88-ft dipole fed with ladder line, usually described as a
"cloud-warmer." Using JT65 I accomplished WAS and eWAS as well as 50
countries and 6 continents confirmed. (Being near the peak of the
solar cycle probably helped.)

My problem is that if I am running 10 watts and hear a United Arab
Emirates station calling CQ (as I did this afternoon) and I crank the
power up to 20 watts the K2 locks up. And no, this isn't done while
transmitting. By locks up I mean that the only button-press that works
is power-off. When I power on everything is back to normal.

The K2 is number 2268 and I believe that all updates have been
applied. The 100 watt amplifier was added later in the top of the K2.
I am using a KAT100 in its own case just below the K2.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 in Contest Conditions

2013-07-13 Thread Robert G Strickland
I can add a few cents to this one. I've used the KPA500 in the usual big
and in some of the small contests. It works transparently. When running
stations on cw, the temp tends to rise to the mid-to-high 30's C. While
I have no doubt that the temp sensitive fan would speed up to meet the
challenge, I always increase the base fan speed when I know the temp
will be going up, usually to the #4 speed. I believe in prevention
rather than wait for the cure. The fan is loud at #5/#6 speeds. However,
I'm always under the headphones, so I don't hear it at all. The only way
to reduce fan noise would be to use a bigger fan, and that wouldn't be
consistent with the small form factor for the amp. In all, it's a nifty
500w amp that I can live with for the duration. And, needless to say,
it's backed up by Elecraft and this list. IMHO, these last two factors
place it head and shoulders above the rest.

Hi all.

[Elecraft] [K2] N1MM Logger with KPA100

2013-07-13 Thread K1FFX
N1MM can not establish connection with K2/100. My PC has a real hardware COM

Hyperterminal. However, test 2 fails; the K2 is not responding to commands

Tried using the +3.5 volt mic-bias supply but

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] N1MM Logger with KPA100

2013-07-13 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bruce,

The KAT100 cable does not use the RXD, TXD and Signal Ground RS-232
signal lines, so unless your cable has a fault (a short between
conductors at the K2 end) the KAT100 connection is not to blame.

Both the TXD and RXD signals are used when attempting the Hyperterminal
Test 1, so I would figure that the KPA100 RS-232 communications is working.

Make certain that the COM port is set to 4800 baud. Try another
computer if possible.

2013-07-13 Thread Don Wilhelm

Olli,

I agree if the frequency is higher than 6 meters, but at 50 MHz and
down, the cable loss does not appreciable degrade the noise figure
(unless the feedline is exceptionally long). That does not equate to
those frequencies above the 50 MHz band.

The real answer depends on your particular situation (antenna gain and
feedline loss).

How should that work if the preamp is mounted at the K3 between RXANT
in & out? It's after the cable then, isn't it? ;-) If you want to
overcome cable loss buy a mast-mounted preamp.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] N1MM Logger with KPA100

2013-07-13 Thread K1FFX
Thanks, Don. I went and tried it with my previous PC and it worked fine.
So, I went back to the
KPA100 manual to look at how the pinouts were specified. The manual
recommended looping CTS to
RTS on the PC side, which I did when I first built the KPA100 and it worked
fine with the PC that was current at that time. But not with new PC! I
pulled the jumper out and it now works fine with N1MM logger on the new PC.

So, KPA100 serial cable builders ... keep an eye out for this one ... that
jumper may disable K2 to PC communications.

Thanks again, Don.

Re: [Elecraft] Trade off PR6 vs PR6-10 pre-amp

Don,

> I agree if the frequency is higher than 6 meters, but at 50 MHz and

> (unless the feedline is exceptionally long).

Cable loss *always* degrades noise figure because it increases the
system noise figure on a dB for dB basis just like *any* attenuator
present before the first amplifier. The question is whether that
increased noise figure is significant in the upper HF (20 - 30 MHz)
range ... and I would argue "it can be".

ITU/CCIR studies show man made noise levels between 15 and 20 dB
higher, on average, than thermal noise in that range - meaning
background noise will run from -127 to -132 dBm in 500 Hz or -120 to
-125 dBm in 2.4KHz. Sherwood measured the K3's MDS at -130 dBm
(presumably at 400 Hz) with preamp off which equates to a noise
figure of 17 dB. 3dB of feedline loss (200 feet of "RG8X" - not
"exceptionally long") ahead of that would directly impact performance.

Even with the K3's stock internal preamp (NF= 7.5 dB, gain 12 dB),
3 dB added to the 9.5 dB system noise figure (MDS= -138 dBm @ 500 Hz)
could reduce system sensitivity to a point that it was insufficient
in an exceptionally quiet location.

[Elecraft] [K1] 2 band for 17 & 12M

2013-07-13 Thread Curt
Last year I bought a two-band module for 20 & 17, then used component values
found on this reflector to build it for 12 & 10M.

It works very well, except power output on 10M was only about 1.5W. There were
mods others had made to the RF board
to improve that output, but I didn't make those changes. Of course 1W is
pretty adequate for 10M DX. And, looks like the
cycle is on the downward slide anyway.

So the PTT switch plugs into the ACC2 cable, that into ACC2 jack.
Where are you using the mono 2.5mm headphone mono jack ?
I have stereo headphones plugged into Phones.

What are using for a mic, the little condenser type plugged directly into the

When menu is set to PTT kow , VOX isvoff then whenvyou push PTT does the mic
become open for TX  that iplugged in to Mic ?
This means it has to be a buttonless nic ( no PTT ) so can I use a headset
microphone like on standard cell phone or even Icom style ( different plug but
maybe gain is high enough ) and just plug it's line into Mic ?

you dont need the breakout cable to put a foot/hand ptt switch. you need
a mono 2.5 mm headphone jack. and you need to fo into the menu and put

but if you plan to use a ptt and the amp then you need the breakout cable

Re: [Elecraft] ERR FW2

2013-07-13 Thread aa4nc
I followed that procedure (EE Initialization / restored configuration) with no
change. I am using the latest 1.13.5.9 K3 utility software.

On SSB, now the radio will transmit about 5-10 seconds, then the power drops to
zero and the monitored audio goes silent (although the transmit relay stays
engaged). I am occasionally getting ERR FW2, and once I got a "New K3 UTIL
software required" message on the front panel.

I tested the radio on CW, where it performs similarly. After transmitting about
5 seconds, it goes into a solid keydown (on the sidetone) / no power output /
transmit relay locked / ERR FW2.

Anyone have any other ideas or is it time to ship it back to Elecraft?

Tnx,

Will

no you can use a standard desktop mic or a headset with a mic or a

you just have to change the mic bias setting in the menu to on, for this
type of mic to work.

One thing. Make sure there is *nothing* connected to the rig: no logging
program, no computer, etc. Just the power supply, antenna, mic and key. RF
getting into external devices can do weird things.

If that doesn't help, call Elecraft customer support. The number is in your
manual. They will lead you through any additional troubleshooting and then,
if the problem isn't fixed, give you the information for returning it for
factory service.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2013-07-13 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
A fine week in the Pacific Northwest. The dry season is here with
no rain in sight. Just the morning fog dropping its normal amount of
moisture. The hummingbirds have been very active catching insects
between the fir branches. I am also seeing elk sign every time I go for
a hike. I never see the sneaky beasts but they are all around me.

Propagation has been fairly good the times I have tried it. The sun
has been adding its daily dose of ions with no really big blasts. I
have heard some static from it but not enough to limit communications.
The QSB it causes is more of an impediment.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.
