Those "stuck" with Windows 8 can downgrade to Win 7 at no cost. I do not know all the details, but I have read several reports that say it is possible. It may require that you have a Win 7 DVD. Check Microsoft for better information. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/20/2013 12:22 AM, Tom Blahovici wrote: Lots of good advice here. Win7 is a good choice if you can get it on new laptops. Re: [Elecraft] PC laptop for K3/KX3 digital modes
I am in the process of upgrading my XP computers to Win7 in anticipation of the April 2014 "drop dead date". With a home network of 8 computers and a NAS fileserver, it is not an overnight task. All computers must talk to each other on the network. I will end up with a couple of the computers running some version of Linux to save the cost of additional copies of Win7 OS, and I am glad to report that after 3 years of aborted attempts, I have finally found a workable configuration file for Samba that will allow a Linux computer to work on my home network. BTW, I have been recommending the use of Spectrogram for the Dial Calibration and filter alignment of the K2 (and K1), and am happy to report that it will run just fine under the most recent version of Wine. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/20/2013 12:03 AM, Rick Bates wrote: I would NOT suggest using XP anymore. If you have a Mac (I have a MacBook Air) you can also run windows under a free (as in free beer) virtualization program from Oracle called VirtualBox. It is mostly open source. I use it to run XP and Win7 and Ubuntu on my Mac. The virtual machine files are not large. For the last 10-15 years all I have bought are Dells both Desktops and Laptops from the Outlet Store. They can be returns, Discontinued, Scratch & Dent, new ones that have been exchanged. Excellent Warranty!!! I have 3 for the shack and 4 laptops, my wife has one of each also as does my Grandson for when he comes over. I recently bought a Clam Shell Case for my iPad that gives it a regular raised keyboard and with its battery can power the iPad for about 100+ hrs continuous use or 6 mo standby. The case is all aluminum and lightweight. But still keeps the iPad small in size the case is amazing in all it does, but a bit pricey. 73, Fred/N0AZZ K3 Ser # 6730--KX3 # 5210--K2/100 # 6470-KAT100 P3/SVGA--KAT500--W2 Amps Elecraft KPA500 HF/6m--Alpha's 9500 HF--87A HF--Mirage B-5030-G 300+w--(2) B-5016-G's 165w 2m -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Lynn W. Hi Don, Thanks for the reply. Yes that crossed my mind but the cable I use now was suppose to be from the "new" batch. I called and got replacement from Elecraft Parts after earlier problem. I think this cable has been in use for better than a year or more and nothing has changed. I will switch cables as soon as I can find or make a new one. Re: [Elecraft] PC laptop for K3/KX3 digital modes
Dave, Almost any PC will work so long as it has a sound card. All of the digital software readily available will run on some minimal machines. I would look for one that is running Windows XP or Windows7. There are just a few questions that you will need to answer. One, is how much do I want to invest, and two, how many simulataneous applications do I plan to run. If you are going to run only FLDIGI, MIXW, DIGIPAN, etc, you only need something low end. I usually steer away from Apple and Linux as Apple just want too much money for their stuff and both have a limited supply of apps to play with as compared to the PC. 73, Barry K3NDM - Original Message - From: "Dave Moorman" To: "Elecraft Elecraft" Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2013 8:23:02 PM Subject: [Elecraft] PC laptop for K3/KX3 digital modes Hello, All - I’d like to get the K3 and KX3 on HF digital and am wondering if anyone can recommend a reasonably priced PC laptop which would do that. I just use a cheap netbook made by ASUS. Works well, sips battery, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg if I drop it and it breaks. Make sure you buy a decent USB soundcard like the Griffin iMic for the best results. Built in sound cards work, but a lot of times they lead to more problems then they are worth. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Loss of signal
Bill, You might want to try a different cable. You said it was replaced "sometime ago" - there was a spell of time when Elecraft had a batch of bad cables. That situation has now been corrected, but you may indeed have 2 bad cables. The fact that things are restored when you tap the cable says that the cable is faulty. 73, Don W3FPR On 11/19/2013 6:02 PM, Bill W wrote: Recently, I have noticed that after a switching bands or simple setting ideal for while just listing, my P3 & SVGA screen signals drop off to almost a flat line. Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 Manual up on web site
Firmware 1.74 is required if you are connecting the KX3 with the KXPA100 using the optional Adapter Cable set. The big advantage of the Adapter Cable is that you can do everything to operate the KXPA100 amp and the optional KXAT100 ATU at the KX3. The KXPA100 can be out of sight and out of reach somewhere. I'm reading the Astron specification sheets that I've used in commercial radio work for decades. You can see the specs for yourself on-line here: http://www.astroncorp.com/dcdc.html As you can see, an Astron 35 is rated at 25 Amps Continuous and 35 watts ICS. That page also defines ICS as "50% Duty Cycle 5 min. on 5 min. off" That's been the definition of ICS for many decades. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: Hisashi T Fujinaka [mailto:ht...@twofifty.com] Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2013 10:43 AM To: Ron D'Eau Claire Cc: 'Robert Nobis'; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Reliable DC Power Supply for K3/P3 As far as I know, they are NOT rated Intermittent COMMERICIAL Service. As far as I know, they are NOT rated Intermittent COMMERICIAL Service. They're rated Intermittent COMMUNICATIONS Service, which is something they made up. It's way lower than you think. One can demand 20 amps peak for SSB or even CW operation and even normal high-duty-cycle operation with a few minutes at 20 amps and then a few minutes in standby. I use an RS-50M and yes it is indeed a real heavy tank. But, then again, it sits on the floor, it is not in the way at all, and it is on all the time (except when I am away from the house for more than a couple of days). I use it to feed a West Mountain Radio Rig Runner 8012. Perfect set up for my QTH. I also have the RS-30M which I use as my "portable" power supply. By portable, I mean portable here at this QTH such as in the garage when doing experiments or building something, out on the back patio when I am operating "remote" in the sun-shine, or sitting (also on the floor) in a convenient location where I use it to drive my Li-ion battery charger. The RS-50M via the Rig Runner drives about six or seven different rigs -- all plugged into the power (Anderson connectors) but obviously not all on. I have a variety of 12 volt DC things that came with their own wall wart but I prefer to use them with the Rig Runner so they now all sport Anderson Power Pole connectors. 73, phil, K7PEH On Nov 19, 2013, at 10:14 AM, Josh Fiden wrote: > Hi Bob, > > Just a note because the RS-50 is a real tank (heavy). The result is a rather robust UPS for the key elements of the ham station. While the Astron supplies have a well-deserved reputation for reliability (and I've used several of them), my present choice is a 20A Power Werx switching supply that I bought to take on a DX trip several years ago. It's RF quiet, the regulation voltage is 13.8V as shipped, and it can be varied (internal pot) to adjust to the needs of the battery you're using. Hi Bob, Just a note because the RS-50 is a real tank (heavy). I use 2x SS-30M which power 5 high current devices (K3/P3, TS790A, IC910H and 2 brick amps). Each power supply is only capable of powering one of these devices during transmit, but since I don't transmit on multiple radios concurrently, that's not a problem. So, unless you need to transmit on the K3 and VHF radio at the same time, you can get by with a smaller/lighter/cheaper supply. Of course nothing wrong with overhead and room for expansion! 73, Josh W6XU On 11/19/2013 9:54 AM, Robert Nobis wrote: Everyone, Thank you. It looks like using an Astron supply is the way to go. Re: [Elecraft] Reliable DC Power Supply for K3/P3
Astrons are rated ICS (Intermittent Commercial Service). Old timers in the Ham hobby will remember that as ICAS (Intermittent Commercial and Amateur Service). For example, the Astron spec sheet for the Astron 20 will show a continuous current rating of 16 amps and an ICAS rating of 20 amps. One can demand 20 amps peak for SSB or even CW operation and even normal high-duty-cycle operation with a few minutes at 20 amps and then a few minutes in standby. But, beyond that, it's likely to overheat and shut down to protect itself. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Hisashi T Fujinaka Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2013 8:34 AM To: Robert Nobis Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Reliable DC Power Supply for K3/P3 The only thing that bit me: Astron XX does not mean XX amps. After more debugging (and lots of bypass caps & chokes and dummy loads and a brand new oscilloscope) and I found that RF in the shack could be part of the problem but just swapping to an Astron 35M was my fix. Unfortunately, the Astron puts out a lot of heat, and my shack happens to be in a room that gets pretty warm even with the A/C on. So I changed to a 25A switching power supply which unfortunately has a fan. Now the tradeoff is heat vs. fan. Re: [Elecraft] Reliable DC Power Supply for K3/P3
Another vote for the Astron linear 35A supply. Mine is an RS-35 (no meters), I've had it for years and it just runs and runs. Many will suggest switching supplies because they are lighter and less expensive for a given current rating, but they are less reliable and there is always the potential for noise. In my opinion, of course! Hi Bob I personally run quite a few shack DC items with mine including a 300w 2m amp along with a battery charger. The charger is one that charges an Optima back-up battery while the power is on keeps it charged quite well. After going through about 7 or 8 supplies most I still have I bought a Astron VS-70M and takes care of everything plus with the variable supply you can set the voltage you want. Unless you've indipendantely created or downloaded the K3 xml file, it wont exist on your system yet.. You have to go to the Fldig download page:- http://www.w1hkj.com/download.html and click on the 'xml archives' link, to get to it (and others.) Then "Right Click", and save a copy of the file to the folder on your system where you want it, in the usual way. Or... Try using Flrig, as the radio interface to your K3, it generally works a whole lot better than the XML's, and you'll have more control too. Plus you can use it indipendantly of Fldigi for other needs etc. Flrig communicates with Fldigi, using the XmlRPC protocol. You'll find that under the rig control tab in Fldigi's settings. If you get a firewall/security warning about allowing it to use networking etc, allow it, as that's how those apps communicate with each other. ONLY have that enabled, check that the other methods have been/are disabled. If you can't get that working, try using the K3 driver in the Hamlib library. Again, use only one control method at a time. However... If anything misbehaves (filter selections etc) then at least with the XML file via CAT control methods, you can edit that file to suit your operating practices. See also the FldigiWiki pages:- https://fedorahosted.org/fldigi/wiki LOTS of help and info there. Especially in regards to nailing down any USB/COM port assignments, so they don't move about each time you connect or reboot the PC. Assuming you're using Windows (you didn't say.) 73. [Elecraft] K3: TRN5 failed
I was plagued by the K3 not transmitting in DATA-A mode on 1296 with a transverter. I had the KXV3 programmed for 1296 transverter with XV5 which should send a HI output on BAND0 when TRN5 is programmed. I first noticed I could transmit if I had 144 selected (XV1) which uses the same IF of 28-MHz. Finally dawned on me that I was not getting BAND0=HI in 1296 which controls my INHIBIT=HI. I reprogrammed XV5 to be TRN7 and everything works (TRN7 outputs BAND0=HI, also). I am not using any of the other BANDn output lines at the present. I guess there is failure in the K3 logic for TRN5. That it a bit surprising as I feed BAND0 to the gate of a 2N thru a high resistance. The transistor is a relay driver that connects the INHIBIT line (ACC pin7) to a source of PTT which brings the inhibit line LO in transmit. PTT is coming from a four-stage sequencer which is keyed by KEY OUT. Since TRN5 was not outputting a logic=HI my INHIBIT line was holding the K3 transmitter off. I guess someday I will need to repair the logic ckt involved. 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com dubus...@gmail.com "Kits made by KL7UW" __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
