Rob, Thanks for the heads up. I ordered one for a friend today. Fred's K3 book is $28.92 including shipping to EI.I consider this pretty good value. The price of the book has I think increased but Fred has done a good job. The KX3 book is also most useful and a handy addition to the KX3. Like your self I have no association with KE7X. It was nice to work KE7X a couple of times in contests. We did exchange e-mails and I rank him a friend for the help his books have provided. Never seen the man. Sam, Are you trying to run anything other than DXLab Suite (Commander) and NaP3? If not, why not connect NaP3 to Commander's Secondary CAT Serial Port using a software null modem? Re: [Elecraft] K3-DXLabs-LP-Bridge AI command question
You have a number of apps connected, and you may find that each one prefers a specific setting of the AI box for its port. Do you have the problem with just LP-Bridge and DXLabs running? I also responded in one of my posts that you can rearrange things so that DXLabs connects directly to the rig, and set up Secondary CAT in DXLabs to communicate with LP-Bridge via a virtual pair (like VSPE, com-ocom, VSP Manager, etc.). Re: [Elecraft] Has this link been changed?
DNS changes don't propagate. However the results of DNS searches do get cached. In principle, when you make a request, the request is routed to the name server for the domain in question, and to get there, requests may have to be made for higher level name servers, up to the root level. In practice, requests are normally made through the ISPs caching name server, so, if someone else has accessed the name recently, the query will be satisfied from there. That means that very few requests ever get sent to the root level servers, but the .COM ones may still be quite busy. DNS entries have a lifetime associated with them, and cached entries which are older than that lifetime are ignored, and the request forwarded towards the definitive server. A competent system administrator will reduce the lifetime down to minutes, a day or two before making any planned change, so that the change will take effect very quickly. -- David Woolley Registered owner K2 06123 On 29/12/13 03:47, Fred Jensen wrote: The link on your desktop is simply a URL. Here is a reply that I received from another fellow on the reflector. I followed his advice and it solved the problem (it was a direct reply so I won't give his name or call, but I was very grateful for his help)! - You have to set the alarm SWR level by using the “[“ and “]” commands (no quotes) in the W2 Utility program. [ lowers the SWR, ] raises it. The initial value in the firmware is undefined, so you have to set it yourself. You may have to issue multiple [ or ] commands to get a valid response from the W2. This is a known firmware bug which is being worked on, as is a few others. Another bug is that after the SWR alarm trips, you have to push the “sensor” button multiple times to get the W2 to reset, but if you have set PWR (serial) to PEP in the W2 GUI application (not utility program), it will reset after one attempt. Note that this is done using the W2 Utility program, which is not the same as the W2 interface program. They are both downloadable from th Elecraft site. When I turn the W2 on, I hear the relay click, and it does interrupt the ptt at this point. 2. The W2 utility program (USB, running on XP) finds and communicates with the W2. When I click on the ALARM button, the label changes from OFF to ON. 3. But when I test it by transmitting into a 'wrong' antenna (SWR=13:1) it does not flash LEDs or activate the relay. 4. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] SDR transmitter issues?
I always get nice comments on my transmit signal using either K3 or KX3, thanks Elecraft! The attention to low phase-noise in the LO was one of the primary reasons I chose the K3 to be the IF for my VHF/UHF/mw transverters. Since I am in the pursuit of very weak-signals this it highly important to receiver sensitivity, especially on eme. I can give an A report card on the K3. I have yet to use the KX3 very much on VHF but will once the 2M module in installed. The KX3 is my main 6m monitor. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Safely running 100% key-down modes

What should I be keeping in mind in protecting the output stage for the K2 and for the KPA100? I’ve used the K2/100 in RTTY and PSK31, even for contests. As designed, I don’t believe that Elecraft recommends running more than about 25 watts out in these 100% duty cycle modes. You can run 50-100 watts for short periods, but there really isn’t enough cooling. I modified my K2/100 by adding a small fan, mounted on rubber feet that sits on top of the heat sink, right where the power transistors are. It blows air down into the heat sink continuously. I have no problem running 50 watts RTTY in this configuration for hours and hours, and could probably run 100 watts with a slightly larger fan. For JT-65, since it is a QRP mode, I'm running at about 5 watts, and transmissions are limited to about 45 seconds. So, I'm hoping that K2's output transistors will not be stressed in this mode. If you run less than 11 watts, the KPA100 deactivates, so you are just running the base K2 only. You’d be better off running 11-25 watts, and using the KPA100, than stressing the K2 output transistors. But, how about PSK-31? I'd like to run about 20 watts and each transmission could easily be 3 or so minutes. I don't know at what output power the base K2 runs when the KPA100 kicks in (i.e., at above 10 watts). I assume that normally the KPA100 will be loafing at 20 watts, but I'm not sure the impact of 100% key down on its output stage. Should work great. [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 SWR problem
I do hope someone out there can give me a hand in solving a 2 month old problem with my Elecraft station, even though the problem may not be due to my Elecraft rig at all. I had been happily operating my K3/KPA500/KAT500 rig for about 10 months with my simple wire doublet antenna, about 25 metres long and 5m high. I work mainly digital modes, especially JT65 so I rarely switch the KPA500 to Operate, using it mainly as a Wattmeter. I have used it on SSB on my local Inter-G club net on 40m however, and everything used to be fine and dandy at all power settings from 40W to 400W with the KAT500 set to Auto. THEN one evening operating at about 60W JT65 on 20m the Kat500 started hunting and the SWR shot up into the red. Since that event the problem has dogged me continuously. Of course, I immediately suspected a short (or open) in my antenna system. My antenna feed used RG58 out to a 4:1 balun outside in a convenient hawthorn bush. 300 ohm ladder line went from the balun to the doublet T piece. Which was offset 1/3-2/3. This antenna matched, and had bagged QSOs on all bands from 80m to 6m. The RG58 was suspect number one. I replaced it with UR8 and used a new route to the balun which obviated the need for any burial. THE PROBLEM REMAINED. The 300W rated balun was the next suspect, and I already had a replacement 1kW unit to hand. I changed it. THE PROBLEM REMAINED, but by now I had learned that if I ran the KAT500 on Manual and kept power below 40W I could operate, and so I continued to add DX QSOs to my log. All that was left were the aerial components, so I dropped the antenna and changed the ladder line, the T piece the antenna wire and the end insulators. THE PROBLEM REMAINED and it seemed that I would be forever limited to 40W. I had an alternative antenna, an MFJ Magloop which could be happily driven to 100+W connected either to K3 Ant2 or KAT500 Ant3 and I worked surprising DX with it, but I really wanted my lovely Doublet back. (Forgot to mention that I also changed rig connecting leads). Since then I have played with my rig to try and understand things better and I am beginning to wonder whether there COULD be a rig problem. I also note that when I start transmitting, power is always less than I have selected and it climbs steadily to the demanded value over time. I have set up ALC as documented. If I set power greater than 40W (this varies a little band to band) the power climbs untilBAM! The SWR of 1 to 1.4 suddenly shoots up into the Red with the KAT500 utility recording values of 5-25! Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] SWR display wrong?
The difference between an SWR of 1.3 and 1.1 is minimal. There is probably some calibration error between the KX3 and MiniVNA. There is also stray C L in each, so that may contribute to the difference. I don't know if a forward/reverse power calibration is approved for the KX3, but it's not shown in the owner's manual. Very low power levels might also be a problem. At low power levels, the ADC that reads the directional coupler output is working at a low range, with reduced resolution (small number of ADC output bits compared to a higher power level). Some call this resolution error. I've heard it said that SWR less than 2 is pretty fair and within operating limits of most transmitters. The KX3 is no exception. Just did a comparison at 5W between KX3 and LP-100A (factory calibrated). The KX3 shows 1.4 SWR and the LP-100A shows 1.7, both done on the same dummy load, with the ATU in bypass. I wouldn't worry about the difference. In actual power terms, the reflected power is extremely low in either case. 73, matt W6NIA On Sun, 29 Dec 2013 22:26:24 +0100, you wrote: My KX3 #4475 shows SWR 1.3 when I press tune and send into a dummy load. Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 SWR problem
Hi Ray: Hello Ray: My first step would be to see how the system behaves into a dummy load. If you don't have a 50-ohm dummy load, hook a 100 to 150 watt incandescent light bulb to the KAT500 and tune up into it (be sure to use a clear frequency - even a light bulb will radiate). That should prove whether it's the KAT500 or the antenna. Another possibility is that balun. I assume it uses a toroid core. If it is getting hot, it might reach its Curie temperature where the magnetic properties of the core change dramatically which would dramatically change the SWR on the transmission line. Your symptoms of SWR jumping up as the power is increased seem very indicative of a bad coax shield connection on your RG58 or RG8 feedline. I would carefully inspect your PL-259s and any barrel connectors that may be involved in the feedline path to the antenna, for looseness in the shield connection to the PL-259. Probably best would be to make up a new coax feedline with new connectors and make sure the solder connections to the shield side are very solid. [Elecraft] KX3 Headphone Clicks
Hi All - just this past weekend completed building KX3 # 5539. Seems to work fine except for one thing. When I've got headphones plugged in and running full break-in I'm hearing a fairly strong clicking noise. I set the rig into semi-QSK with a 1-second DLY and see that the click is happening when the radio goes back into receive, NOT when I key it and send RF out into the ozone. Any idea what's happening here? I've tried it with three different sets of 'phones: A Sony MDR-V6, a Bose Triport, and an el-cheapo pair of 'round-the-ear phones that I use with my iPhone at the gym. I hear the same click on all three. I then unplugged the 'phones and listened to the built-in speaker with DLY at zero. The clicks are there, too. Very annoying. Any hints?? If you don't do this, MMTTY will release PTT as soon as the computer has finished sending the data to the device at USB speeds, which happens long before the radio has finished sending the data at RTTY speed. 73, Rich VE3KI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KX3 and flrig operation
Hi all, I recently upgraded to a 13 retina MacBook Pro and am trying to set up fldigi and flrig. At the moment I have flrig working and talking to fldigi and can adjust most of the KX3 from the flrig application. However, occasionally when I flip fldigi into transmit mode to respond to someone, the KX3 takes a bit of time before it finally starts transmitting. As a result, a large amount of the text being sent gets cut off. One thing I did notice is that the red and green LEDs inside the KX3's USB cable constantly light up when flrig is in the foreground. After ten or so seconds with flrig in the background, those lights stop working. Could my laptop and/or flrig be putting the USB port to sleep? How do I get it to not do that? Re: [Elecraft] NAP3 setup with KX3
Check to be certain both channels are being sent to the soundcard. The levels should be the same in both channels. It could be a cable problem or a soundcard problem that is only presenting one channel to the NaP3 application. Unplug each channel (one at a time) and see if the display indicates about the same level from each channel (yes, you will have mirrored images with only one channel). Do you have the KX3 set to output RX IQ signals? If all that is OK, then tune to a strong signal (S-9 plus) and the NaP3 WBIR algorithm should eliminate the mirrored responses. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/29/2013 7:54 PM, Reed Bumgarner wrote: I'm having problems setting up NAP3 with the KX3 and a Creative XI-FI soundcard plugged into my ASUS W 8.1 laptop. I followed the configure instructions as closely as I could but the display is not right. It's just a symmetrical waterfall and spectrum around the center of the screen. I.E. One side is a mirror image of the other. Otherwise it recognizes the rig and soundcard fine. Any ideas? that is what we had several times told to elecraft, qsk on kx3 is bad, you can read this also at bob sherwood Von: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net]quot; im Auftrag von quot;Jim Bennett [w6...@mac.com] Gesendet: Montag, 30. Any hints??
